>> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now, wmur news 9 at 5:00. adam: we start tonight with commitment 2016 coverage. right now, democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders is speaking at a town hall at plymouth state university. good evening, i' m adam sexton. stephanie: and i' m stephanie woods. earlier today, the vermont senator held another town hall at a different school. about 1100 people packed the redfern arts center at keene state college this afternoon. sanders spoke about a political revolution, doing away with the establishment economy, politics, and media, and reviving democracy. income inequality and threats to social security a major problems facing our country according to the democratic hopeful. sanders said that he spoke in keene because he' s running for president and wants students' support, but he also wants more. >> what the political revolution is about is that i need you,

up to the election. we need you the day after the election. [applause] >> and the reason for that is that the powers that be in this country, a nation which is increasingly moving toward an oligarchic form of society both economically and politically, the reason we need a political revolution is we cannot bring about the kinds of fundamental changes we need unless millions of people are prepared to stand up to wall street, corporate america, and large campaign donors. stephanie: mike cronin is covering his speech in plymouth and will have more later tonight. adam: a day after making a headline-grabbing speech before the republican jewish coalition, senator lindsey graham is back on the first-in-the-nation

in the wake of the terror-linked mass shooting in california, he says it' s time to take action before it happens again. >> so i always talk about national security. mike: even at a women' s initiative forum in manchester, senator lindsey graham stays on message. while addressing topics ranging from the heroin epidemic to domestic violence, he still managed to tie issues back to safety, security, and foreign policy. he tells news 9 he' s eager for more information about the woman involved in the san bernardino shooting, who reportedly pledged allegiance to isis before the attack. >> the one thing i want to know, was she radicalized before she married this guy? i' ve always been concerned about isil recruiting women to marry them off to get into the united states. adam: graham says if this was a so-called terrorist-arranged marriage, then it' s time to re-examine the u.s. visa system. >> these people had thought about what they were doing. they had made bombs. they had planned. and they had a six-month-old child. if that doesn' t tell you about

nothing will. adam: as far as what more can be done on the homefront, graham is pointing the finger at two of his colleagues and competitors. >> our n.s.a. capabilities have been reduced. senators cruz and paul combined their efforts to neuter the data mining system. adam: even though polls show graham at the bottom of the pack, top republicans like house speaker shawn jasper, who has yet to endorse a candidate, say the senator is worth a look from voters. but he also thinks the size of the g.o.p. field is both a blessing and a curse. >> that' s part of the problem. when you look at the front-runner, he' s at 30% of the vote. that means 70% of the people who are planning on voting are with somebody else. adam: on the local front, the senator promised to assist local efforts to fund a stabilization center in manchester for heroin users who are seeking help taking the first steps from addiction to recovery. fellow republican candidate ohio governor john kasich was also in new hampshire today. governor kasich started his day

rally in claremont. he told people there that he thinks the u.s. needs to lower the cost of health care coverage. the governor also went on to say that he thinks it is important to help rehabilitate people with addictions. kasich also held a town hall in and you can find the latest political news by heading over to our website, wmur.com/politics. stephanie: a rally took place at the state house today to support refugees from syria and iraq. dozens of people stood on main street holding signs and listening to speakers, some of them from the immigrant community. wmur' s kristen carosa was there and joins us live with more. kristen: today' s rally was peaceful, a chance for people to unite in their support for refugee resettlement. dozens gathered around the state house holding signs saying "we welcome refugees" and "we welcome the stranger." many of them there today say after the terror attacks in paris, there is an increased fear of people from other countries. they say while the fear of terrorists is understandable, they should not associate

meteorologist hayley lapoint is here with a quick look at the forecast. hayley: it is amazing. it did not feel like december. high temperatures in the 50' s. the average usually around 40. 54 in manchester. we were only in the 40' s up north with snow on the ground temperatures cooler in those communities. now. 42 in concord. 33 in whitefield. temperatures will quickly descend through the evening because of the clear skies and light wind. you see the sunset happening an hour ago now. we have had darkness a bit longer. we will have a star filled sky tonight with clear skies. 38 by 9:00. if you are heading out to dinner or the movies, remember your cold-weather gear. it is not warm after the darkness has settled in.

weekend forecast and next week ahead. stephanie: thank you. more accounts of survival and death are coming to light in san bernardino, site of the worst terror attack since 9/11. at the same time, officials are beginning to unravel the mystery behind the woman in the husband and wife team that slaughtered 14 innocent people. abc' s liz hur reports. >> [gunfire] >> shooting, gunshots. liz: jena nyende was inside a room full of co-workers at a christmas party, when two shooters unloaded at least 65 another victim, denise peraza, described the horror to her sister. stephanie rose baldwin: she said as soon as the gunfire started, everyone dropped down to the floor and they were underneath the desks. she was trying to shield herself with a chair with the man who was next to her. liz: that man, shannon johnson, held his arms around her, telling her i got you. he did not survive. david bowdich, f.b.i.: we are now investigating these horrific acts as an act of terrorism.

find out more about the husband and wife shooters, syed farook and tashfeen malik, and whether malik may have radicalized her husband. she posted to facebook around the time of the deadly rampage to declare her allegiance to isis. nada bakos: terrorism is not gender specific, violence is not gender specific. at this point in the evolution of terrorism, it wouldn' t be surprising to see a woman take an operational role. liz: isis recruiting videos actively target young women, enticing them to joint the terrorist group. some have been mothers like tashfeen malik, leaving behind a six-month-old baby. audrey alexander: they are prioritizing martyrdom above all other aspects of their life, including raising a family. liz: the male suspect' s sister is trying to understand what happened. saira khan: he was so happy with her. how could he leave his only child? you know? and how could the mother do this? liz: the couple' s neighbor is also left wondering. tomi olsen: it was like they were anonymous to all of us. it' s really weird. liz: authorities are questioning

two high-powered, semi-automatic weapons used in the attack, and then sold them or turned them over to farook. elizabeth hur, abc news, new york. stephanie: chicago officials released reports of the officer-involved shooting of a teen in 2014. the hundreds of pages of documents pertain to the shooting death of 17-year-old laquan mcdonald. chicago officer jason van dyke is now facing first-degree murder charges in the death of mcdonald. the new documents include police reports that have several officers, including van dyke, describing mcdonald as aggressively approaching officers with a knife. however, dashcam video shows mcdonald moving away from the officers when he was shot. adam: thousands of unitil customers in the concord area were without power this morning. unitil spokesperson alec o' meara says crews believe a bird brought down a line in the area of bridge street. power was fully restored just before 10:00 a.m. stephanie: a house in concord was destroyed by an overnight fire. crews responded to the two-alarm

morning on silk road. fire officials say the fire was difficult to fight because it happened in a rural area with no access to fire hydrants. it took crews about an hour to knock down the blaze. the homeowner did suffer non-life-threatening injuries. our "spirit of giving" toy drive is underway. adam: we will talk to john to find out how things are going today. stephanie: the patriots are gearing up for the eagles on sunday afternoon. jason king will have a preview in sports. hayley: it is going to be amazing how mild it will feel for the fans at the game tomorrow. we have another warm one ahead of us. when the colder air returns, coming up. adam: at five: 30, senator jeanne shaheen joining nine

a pickup truck just dropped off a boatload of toys grid we still need more toys. adam: what are some things you' ve seen in the past that bring in big waves of donations? what can we do to get things going faster? >> we have had people drop off, firemen dropped off toys yesterday. the new hampshire state police dropped off a truck load of toys. every bit helps. we are looking for toys for ages between 10 and 14. that is the most important now. stephanie: 2200 toys, individual toys have been donated? correct. but we still need more. we are making a good pace but help. stop by and help us out. adam: what kind of donations are you looking for? anything specific? >> board games, toys, sporting equipment, golf sets, basketball.

anything for boys. makeup kits for girls. we have had curling irons, hairdryers. it is a lot of essentials they need this time of year. adam: thanks so much for your time and keep up the great work. stephanie: thank you. adam: you can still drop off toys until 8:00 tonight at both locations. we' ll be back out tomorrow for the final push at both the toys "r" us in manchester and at the crossings in newington. all donations will go to the "toys for tots" campaign. every december since 1992, "wreaths across america" has laid wreaths on graves at arlington national cemetery. last week, the program was short, so they reached out on social media for help -- and the wmur' s sally kidd has the story. sally: the goal was 230,000 wreaths, one for every grave in arlington. and the public answered the call to honor every one. "wreaths across america" says it is humbled by the quick response

there is a chance danny amendola will be back in the patriots lineup on sunday. he is listed as questionable while rob gronkowski is out. they can clinch the east with a win and the jets loss. it would be the 12 title in 13 years. the last year quarterbacks to play the eagles throughfive touchdown passes each. >> the crazy thing about it, we have been seeing all of them causing turnovers, making plays. the defensive line getting to the quarterback and stuff like that. we have been seeing all the takeaways they have been having. jason: college basketball this afternoon, michigan hosting houston baptist. duncan robinson a sophomore from newcastle, new hampshire, the kid can shoot. first half, three from the wings. second half, another from the wings. he finished with 19 points.

it will be another frosty night because of clear skies. with that will also mean for tomorrow, more sunshine. it looks beautiful to round out the weekend tomorrow and milder. a lot of you telling us he wanted to feel like december. it won' t be tomorrow. we will have more sunshine tomorrow. temperatures cranking up a couple of degrees warmer than today. in the mid-40' s in the northern part of the state. more like mid-50' s in central and southern new hampshire with light wind. when do the temperatures start to cool down? is there snow in the forecast? i will show you the full 70 forecast in a few moments. adam: thank you. new hampshire senator jeanne shaheen joined nine other democratic senators to stress the urgency of the issue of climate change at the conference in paris. senator shaheen said that most americans realize that climate change is already happening. at the talks this morning, she said that a recent pew poll showed that 2/3 of americans say they understand climate

senator shaheen: but it doesn' t matter what we do in new hampshire. it doesn' t matter what we do in the united states if we can' t get the world to move to address climate change, and that' s what these negotiations are all about. adam: the senators in attendance believe that a binding global agreement could be reached in paris. wrote leaders did agree on a draft agreement. stephanie: police are investigating two serious crashes overnight in rochester. the first one happened shortly before midnight on rochester hill road. rochester police say the driver hit a utility pole. this forced crews to close roads near profile apartments and sky haven airport. the severity of the damage to the pole caused a temporary power outage to the area. police say the driver was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. about an hour later, officers responded to a single car rollover just a few miles away from the first crash. this crash happened on old dover road near briar ridge estates. police say they found they found a pickup truck on its side.

35-year-old antoneil banton of rochester, lost control of his vehicle and went off the road. banton was arrested, accused of using his cellphone while driving. also overnight, a 22-year-old driver was pulled from his car rolling over. hooksett police say it happened before 2:00 this morning. its roof and the poll cut in half. injuries. speeding. in londonderry, a fire sent five people to the hospital overnight. fire crews say the call came out about 2:00 this morning on stony point drive. officials say all victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. adam: the first lego league 2015 challenge is just wrapping up right now in nashua. today, 50 teams competed in the new hampshire championships building lego robots to compete in missions scored by judges.

world championships in st. louis, missouri, while second place earns a trip to the legoland championship in may. but for the teams, it' s all about learning and having fun. they say winning is the result of one thing. >> probably teamwork. >> it is what gets you the furthest in the competition. i think that is a big thing. >> a lot about robotics. adam: winners will be announced shortly. results at 11:00. hundreds of runners decked in santa gear hit the pavement in manchester for the "santa shuffle." the 5-k road race started and finished in front of veterans park in downtown manchester. the first 1800 participant all got a full santa suit for the race. before the shuffle, the kids took part in the kids' "elf run" which was a 100-yard dash. stephanie: the holiday shopping season is underway list, you' ll want to make sure the toys you get for your kids are safe.

station koat, shows us what to watch out for. sasha: shopping for toys can be a lot of fun. but how do you know if your kids' holiday gifts are safe? >> some of the biggest hazards that we have are invisible when it comes to toys, and that is because they are made with some very toxic chemicals. sasha: according to the new mexico public interest research group, one of those chemicals is the heavy metal chromium, often found in toys with chrome plating. >> chromium is typically linked to causing severe skin conditions, swelling, and ulcers. sasha and to certain cancers. :>> chromium is subject to 60 parts per million in surface coating. this "slinky junior" was found with 1,400 parts per million of surface coating of chromium. sasha: according to the report, another issue with some toys is the size of parts or of the toy itself. that means potential choking hazards for toddlers and infants.

includes food and lodging. paula: "d acres farm" in dorchester has offered meals and advice monthly for the past 18 years. this 200-acre farm, with views of mounts moosilauke and carr, was first farmed by owner josh trought' s aunt and uncle. they became homesteaders on the land in the 1940' s. these days, trought teaches others the benefits of farming and living lightly on the land. on the first sunday of each month, the farm hosts a breakfast and tour. donations are suggested, but there' s no required fee. other monthly events include family pizza and movie nights, potlucks, and open-mic nights. the property also offers educational homestays, a permaculture design course. and in summer, guests can stay in one of the seven tree houses. for more information on programs and the new book about its mission, go to the "escape

"a christmas carol" is back in the granite state. it has become an annual tradition. has featured everything from ballet to bottle. of ups and downs but still going strong. supporters say my theater remains important. being day lose with rock concerts, stuff on the internet . coming to a live show, not a rock concert, and seeing my performers, there' s nothing like it. adam: it is not too late to order tickets for "a christmas carol." i want to know where i can get one of those suits. stephanie: i have never met a christmas cookie i did not like. but the holiday season is about more than baked goods.

it was a gorgeous december day and mild. temperatures got into the 50' s across much of central and southern new hampshire, well above the average high about 40 this time in december. we reached 53 in concord. 54, manchester. we were stuck in the 40' s in plymouth and whitefield. but even those temperatures are warmer than where we are typically this time in december in those communities. here is where we are now. 42 in concord. 44 in manchester. we have fallen into the upper 30' s in the monadnock region. about 35 in lebanon. 37 in laconia now. the winds have not been strong today. they will continue to diminish. in laconia, only five miles at the moment. through the overnight with clear skies and light winds, that is the recipe for cold air and cold temperatures to settle in.

the coldest temperatures will be in the northern part of the state where there is snow on the ground. teens in those communities like lancaster. closer to the mass border is where you will have temperatures closer to 30 in places like dover and portsmouth. overnight, we are going to remain clear. nothing happening out west. just some fair weather clouds over the adirondacks. that is it for a long while. we have to go about 1000 miles west to get cloud cover. we have a couple more days with sunshine and quite weather. futurecast. 10:00 tonight, a few clouds. that is about it. those will fizzle out overnight. here is 8:00 sunday morning. bright and chilly. teens and 20' s in most communities with frost but will climb with sunshine. temperatures will make a quick rebound into the 50' s in the afternoon. this is 4:00 on sunday

it will still be mild. temperatures come crashing down tomorrow night. if you have plans to do holiday shopping, i know i did some today and i was not alone, lots of sunshine tomorrow. by noon, around 50 in a lot of locations. clear skies throughout 5:00 as temperatures fall back through the 40' s. here' s what you can expect over the next couple of days. a mix of sun and clouds monday, 52. tuesday, it will be cooler. s for highs. there is a small chance of a couple of flurries in the southeastern part of the state. there is a storm system moving along the coast which may move right by the coastline for us. that could mean a couple of flurries but no accumulation. wednesday, sun and clouds. temperatures in the lower 40' s. overnight, temperatures fall into the 20' s. during the day, we get a nice rebound.

roll out its handmade candy canes. for a few weekends leading up to the holiday, this sweet shop is all about creating these peppermint twists. >> they are going to picked up on tuesday. they love these candy canes. >> the recipe has been indent nelson -- in doug nelson' s family for more than 100 years. his grandfather opened a shop in 1911. each december, huge candy canes would hang from the rafters like a chandelier. visiting the candy counter during the holidays is one of his fondest childhood memories. >> when we approached the store and i saw the big candy canes in the window, it was like a marvel. it is something i will never forget how beautiful that looked. i said, someday, i' m going to do that. >> the third-generation candy maker says a century later, these canes are still one of the

>> probably about 250 degrees right now. i can feel it through these gloves. >> after a few minutes of cooling, the candy is ready for the next step. his brother, mark, takes it over to the taffy machine to pull the candy by hand. >> this is where it gets [indiscernible] >> the air makes it easier to buy into the canes. is during this step that peppermint oil is added and the candy becomes a pearly white. >> it is going to get whiter. >> from here, the candy is shaped into a loaf and the stripes are attached. >> real quick, we will apply to the stripes. as he is applying them, he is rolling them in between each stripe. he has to make sure those are married, that they will not come off. they will seal onto the hot candy.

the celebration marked his 88th birthday. it was his first public appearance since september. the festivities include gifts and fireworks. happy birthday to him. nasa says it may have the clearest close up photos of pluto. adam: the space agency' s "new horizons" spacecraft snapped the pictures in july, during its closest fly-by ever of pluto. the black and white images show craters, mountains, and glacial terrain along a strip some 50 miles wide. although "new horizons" sped past pluto this past summer, nasa says it will take about a year to transfer all of the photos and data. and the spanish galleon "san jose" was discovered off the coast of colombia. the ship sunk 307 years ago. the colombian president says a team of international experts, the navy, and archaeological institute discovered the rack last week. it is believed it sunk in the caribbean in 1708 loaded with
