shelley: a fiery crash in henniker this afternoon leaves one person dead and sent another person to the hospital by helicopter. good evening i' m shelley , walcott. route 202 is now open but police shut it down for hours as they try to figure out exactly how the crash happened. wmur' s mike cronin joins us live from henniker with the latest information. mike: police spent hours analyzing the scene. before they got there several people were trying to help the person who was inside that vehicle on fire. tonight we spoke with one of them. >> witnesses describe a chaotic scene as good samaritans tried to help someone trapped in a car on fire. video shows one man spraying the engine with a fire extinguisher. >> people were running around, grabbing fire extinguishers, water, anything they could to help. >> yeah, there' s someone in there. >> almost a dozen people pulled over on route 202 in henniker to do what they could before first

>> i just saw a bunch of dirt in the road and then when i came up closer i saw smoke coming out of the woods and i saw the truck on its side. travis larouche took the video. one person was killed, another airlifted to the hospital. >> as far as we know, there is one occupant in each vehicle. mike just before 3:00 this : afternoon police say two cars were driving west on the road. there was a rear end collision and one car rolled on its side catching fire. >> one person was pronounced dead at the scene. another has been transported by helicopter to dartmouth for treatment with serious injuries. route 202 was closed for several hours monday while police collected evidence. the circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation. >> the names of the persons involved are being withheld until such time that the families and next of kin can be notified. mike: this isn' t the first fatal crash at this area of route 202. in 2008 a hopkinton police officer was struck from behind

s owner was getting his mail. officers say he started to slow down, but panicked because he had an existing arrest warrant. gosselin is charged with leaving the scene of an accident and other charges. authorities are looking for the man they say stole $65,000 from a bartlett home. the carroll county sheriff' s office says 26-year-old daniel lennon is wanted on a felony arrest warrant. ' anyone who knows where lennon is should call bartlett police or the carroll county sheriff' s office. a state panel says the application to build the controversial northern pass project is complete. today the site evaluation committee rejected arguments from opponents who say land use first. and they voted six nothing to accept eversource' s application to build a 192 mile transmission line from pittsburg to deerfield.

dyke shooting laquan mcdonald in october 2014. van dyke is charged with first degree murder. he says he fired in self defense. the probe announced today is separate from an existing federal investigation into mcdonald' s death. >> our investigation is focused on use of force and accountability within the police department. we' ll be looking at how force, including deadly force, is handled, investigated and how officers are held accountable for that. shelley: in a separate case, prosecutors will not bring charges against the officer who shot and killed ronald johnson the state' s attorney says johnson pointed a gun at the officer before he was killed. reports of a shooting at a california mall turned out to be mistaken but the situation was serious. what some people thought were gunshots turned out to be the sound of breaking glass from these robbers smashing the counters of a jewelry store. people ran for safety as police rushed to the mall.

the counter hundreds of people came running towards me. we were just freaking out, saying what' s happening, what' happening. we just grabbed each other and started running out the door. shelley: that woman says she fell down and was actually run over by other shoppers trying to get out. police are still searching for the suspects. today marks the 74th anniversary of the attack on pearl harbor. in hawaii, survivors of the attack gathered today to remember the tragic event. about 2400 people were killed when japanese forces attacked the u.s. military base in hawaii on december 7, 1941. the attack brought the u.s. into world war ii. today' s events included a commemoration of the sinking of the uss oklahoma, as well as the internment of the ashes of a former ensign in the hull of the uss arizona. wreaths across america is making deliveries to cemeteries across the country.

arlington national cemetery. this morning it made a special stop in raymond where a ceremony was held. the convoy is made up of three tractor trailer loads of balsam fir wreaths that will be placed at national cemeteries and memorial sites to recognize the s veterans. stranger who helped pay off robin ayers says that she went to the walmart in epping a few away to start her holiday shopping. this past weekend, ayers went to make a payment on the items and discovered the balance was much lower than she thought. ayers then paid off the balance and brought home the presents and was surprised by a note inside. >> it said have a merry christmas, may your family be blessed. god is always watching have a very merry christmas. shelley: it turns out a complete stranger paid $150 towards the balance.

the woman behind the generosity. mike: great to see. shelley: turning our attention to the weather, it been really mild out for december. mike: temperatures running four or five degrees above average for this time of year. we are not close to any records. it looks like it will start to change as we bring in some cooler air starting right now. take a look at the time lapse of that newfound lake today, deep blue skies in a late october field out there here on december 7. temperatures well into the 50' s to around 60. starting to see a few changes coming in. the latest storm close by but a lot of the rain has not made its way into southern new england all though the high canopy of clouds has stretched into parts of new hampshire.
