y' s family lives here in somersworth. he was described as an exceptional leader an extraordinary man. andrew was 21 years old. he died wednesday. he was seriously injured during a live fire exercise and died from his injuries. he was like to throughout his battalion and his death has affected all of his fellow he was born in manchester, graduated from dover senior high school, and lived in stratford. he enlisted in the army in 2013 and served in one tour and afghanistan. the army says his death is under investigation. coming up at 6:00, we will hear from governor hassan. wmur news 9. josh: marketing students at unh could play a role in fighting the spread of terror. the state department asked them, and students at other schools around the country, to develop anti-extremism media campaigns. jennifer crompton joins us from the seacoast bureau tonight to explain.

jennifer: we know high school students are impressionable and susceptible and heavy users of social media. what better way to fight online recruitment than enlisting young people to come up with ideas. 12 unh marketing majors embraced the idea as a semester long project. it involves taking a pledge. it is called the packs pledge, the latin word for it -- it is called the pax pledge, the latin word for peace. they used what they found to launch a facebook page, twitter, and instagram accounts of and a website, as well as teaching tools for students and families to talk about the dangers while giving them something positive to be part of. >> then when they are contacted online by a recruiter of isis or isil, they see something happening, the d.c. togetherness

our idea is to educate those people and eradicate any feeling they need to long to something that is so negative. jennifer: coming up, what they learned from nashua high school students. now, live in portsmouth, jennifer crumpton, wmur news 9. shelley: three victims from the san bernardino terror attack are being remembered at funerals today. all are fathers killed when a married couple opened fire at a holiday party where the men wokred. today, a dive team is still searching a lake a few miles from the site of the attack. one official says they' re looking for a computer hard drive that may have been dumped in the water. federal lawmakers briefed on the investigation today say there' s also evidence that the shooters exchanged extremist messages online, before their marriage , but the communication wasn' t caught by intelligence agencies. the san bernardino shooting has generated some controversial reactions, particularly from republican presidential candidate donald trump.

a vigil this afternoon to show solidarity against his comments and remember the victims of the attack. wmur' s suzanne roantree has the story. suzanne: a few dozen people to part in the vigil on the islamic center. they reached out to christians and jews in the area, asking them to take part. they do not want to be associated with isis and expressed dismay at republican presidential candidate donald trump' s plan to ban any muslim coming into the united states. >> i' m disappointed i what he is saying. putting all politics aside, we are focusing on the victims in california, their families anywhere in this country now and stuff. that is our main goal. to tell people we are here for

>> we do not believe in this. this is not our thing. we do not condone it. we did not start it. we are not part of it. suzanne: participants at the vigil say it is heartwarming to see people of different faiths coming together to fight terror. josh: a keene man is accused of carrying out two robberies less than an hour apart. police say justin paquette held up a circle k and the winchester street sunoco before dawn this morning. shortly after the second robbery, officers stopped a vehicle matching the description of the getaway car and paquette was inside. two people face charges after police say they were in possession of heroin with a 5-month old child in their car. police say robert rainville of lebanon and haley gadwah of penacook were inside an suv in the parking lot of the rite aid on elm street. police say they were acting suspiciously and two detectives approached their vehicle. >> they made contact with the driver. he tried to discard what he had, the syringe and the drugs, which

re-establishment of diplomatic ties with cuba. congress passed a short-term spending bill today, instead of the new budget bill due tonight. josh: that deadline arrived without a deal. lawmakers say there are still dozens of issues to resolve, including environmental and other policy issues. the last short-term spending bill expires tonight at midnight. today' s votes extend that budget through wednesday. it' s headed to president obama, who is expected to sign it. several operator errors led to a red line train traveling through four stops without anyone at the controls. safety officials say when the operator got off that train to check a problem, he did not set the brake. sources tell our sister station, wcvb, that he also tied a cord around the throttle. state officials say they' ll change the bypass procedure the operator was using for the original problem and will now require a second, senior-level employee to be present. shelley: police are investigating a deadly crash in north reading, massachusetts, where a car went right through the wall of a house. the woman at the wheel was already dead when emergency

that is because the air above us is warmer than the air near the ground. berlin is at 37. the problem is the sun is so very, very weak at this time of year, the lowest level of the ground without appreciable wind, just cannot get that fog out, and that is why our temperatures are five to 10 degrees colder than expected. i have to temper expectations, although some folks could be at 60. this will bring showers to the north country -- rain showers. it' s just the way this year has gone. tomorrow morning, that scoots out and allows milder air to push and. windier tomorrow and even overnight tonight. i don' t think the fog will be as thick as it has been. there is that warmer weather. if we could a good southwesterly

be even warmer than i am forecasting tomorrow. then we are in between. seasonably cold air to the north, unseasonably cold air to the south, and it will be draped across new hampshire. mild air, clearing. not as thick as it has been in nights passed. low temperatures -- i mean, this is pretty close to where average high' s should be this time of year. lows are only dropping in the 30' s to around 40 degrees. for the day tomorrow, not bright and sunny, but there will be some son. could be a sprinkle. quite mild. temperatures will be in the 50' s. clouds will take most of the day to clear out up north. our best shot to reach 60, the monadnock region. the system will try to move back in from northern new hampshire and maine. northeastern areas of the granite state, 40' s junior 50. southern areas, closer to the upper 50' s, near 60.

aixa: carson' s campaign says even though he signed a pledge that he would not launch a third-party bid, he did so based on everyone playing by the rules. aixa diaz, wmur news 9. shelley: in our spirit of giving, a shelter that helps young mothers could use your help. new generation in greenland is a homeless shelter for women who are either pregnant or parenting. the shelter can house up to seven mothers and 7 babies at a time. it also helps young mothers who are struggling to remain independent. the program took an unexpected financial setback this year. >> we have two thrift shops were all the proceeds go to help fund the programming we provide. the one in seabrook had to close because it was not making money, so we' re kind of operating at a deficit rate usually that shop races $35,000 to $45,000 a year where not going to have.

shelley: video off the closing bell is provided by the new york stock exchange. a down day on wall street. all the indices down on the day. shipping companies are already starting to get overwhelmed with holiday packages. josh: fed ex and ups have both said that deliveries are taking re blaming an unexpected jump in online sales over the the delays have many people thinking back to 2013 when high volume and bad weather meant thousands of folks didn' t get their deliveries until after christmas. if you' re flying between christmas and new year' s, you' ll have a little more company than last year. experts predict a three% -- 3% increase in air travel this year that translates to a total of about 38 million passengers. airlines are responding making more seats available through the holidays. some are on added flights others -- summer on added flights.

shelley: quite the predicament for one driver in ohio she drove -- in ohio. she drove onto a guide wire for a utility pole -- look at that it guided her car right into the . air. the woman says she turned around for a moment to get her a toddler a snack that' s when she hit the guide wire. it took two wrecking crews to untangle the car. the woman and her child are fine. wow. a distracted driver in rhode island thought all hope was lost, after he left his work binder on the roof of his truck. josh: it wasn' t just papers inside. the binder also held 4 thousand dollars cash. it didn' t take long for an employee from providence water to spot it. he thought another worker from his agency had dropped the binder but called police as soon as he saw the money. officers helped him connect with the owner. >> he just said, did you find it? and kind of grabbed me with a bear hug and said, thank you so much. i could see the relief in his eyes. josh: i bet he could.
