of hand. investigators were called to the home at 3:00 while he lit the porch on fire while his mother was watching. kane ran off, triggering a search involving several agencyies. police say someone picked him up. they were able to track his cell phone and arrested him. investigators say they were lucky. >> the residents was a due flex that had been in the property. the arson obviously could have been gotten really bad, especially using a propellant such as gasoline. hurt. kane is set to be arraigned here in salem. police are trying to him up.

out who sparked a fire in a vacant apartment building. when they arrived, they found fire on the back of the building. crews were able to mostly contain the flames to the porch areas. the cause is under investigation. officials say there was no power to the building and no one lived there. two people are dead after a fast-moving fire in wooster, massachusetts. an elderly brother and sister had lived in the home for decades. neither one made it out. the flames burned through both floors. it is unusual it took so long for someone to notes the fire. the cause is under investigation. the police chief in new bedford, massachusetts has passed away. 59-year-old chief david provencher died after suffering respiratory arrest at the hospital. he was a survivor of throat cancer.

man and outstanding chief, said the mayor. a man is due in court this morning. 23-year-old adrien stillwell was charged with conspiracy to commit murder with michael pittman. 25-year-old michael yunge is charged as well. today marks 20 years since a manchester man was found stabbed to death in his home. his family is pleading for the public's help to solve the case. walter page was found in the basement in his home in december of 1995. his death was ruled a homicide. investigators say it is still a very solvable case. family members say they

happenedded. police say a man backed a machine yesterday morning and ran off. turns off the car was stolen from a church parking lot while the owner was inside attending service. the man accused of driving the wrong way while drunk is due in court. they arrested 22-year-old andi -- andy mazarra. he faces several charges, including dwi and using mobile electric devices while driving. the operator who was supposed to be at controls of the runaway redline train in boston is set to face a disciplinary hearing today. the train left the station on thursday morning with about 50 people on board. not the operator. the young went through four stations before

it is a slow down. bernie sanders is the only one with events planned. he's going to meet with students in nashua and hold a town hall in hollis. on the republican side are supporters of dr. ben carson. they say they are not worried that it has been nearly a month since he's visited. he hasn't been here since he filed for the primary. recent polls show his support is falling. >> i don't think that's a big concern. every time someone goes to hear him, they come out loving him. erin: when he does come back, the new hampshire campaign says it is going to be in a big way with a large family friendly event in concord. one man is gaining ground is ted cruz. he is now almost even in iowa. they will flank trump in the gop debate in las vegas.

between candidates is heating up with ted cruz on the fast track in iowa running neck in neck with donald trump. it is a swift rise for the texas senator. a 21-point gain since october in one poll. crews and trump up until now have played nice. that all changed this weekend. in iowa, trump kegging at cruz for being against ethanol. >> how does he win? iowa? that's very anti-iowa. isreporter: and in the senate. >> he will never get anything done like in congress. that'ses problem with ted. reporter: cruz said in honor of trump and good hearted maniacs everywhere. he says he sees cruz playing a part in his administration.

the irs money. they are getting 2,000 reports nationwide. runners took to the road for a great cause. toys for the tots 5k donated to toys for tots. a portion of the race fees will be used to buy gifts for families in need this christmas. >> my wife and i have our own business. we put on the races for it is a business. this is one of the run ones that we do. after we pay the expenses, all of the cash leftover is going to go for toys for tots. erin: each year the event draws between 40 to 50 runners and walkers. there's a mystery in kindness. someone hung brand new winter hats on a tree in the park and left them for anyone who needs them. the donor sent us the pictures but did not identify themselves.

last week someone left warm clothing for the homeless on boston common. they did it because they saw someone doing in this central park in new york city. this is spreading. it is wonderful to see. kevin: it is. the acts of kindness continues to go for the toys for tots to the food banks. we continue on. for the month we hit the halfway point. we are eight and a half degrees above normal for the month. it looks like we're going to have the milder air sticking around for the next couple of days. we'll start to cool off. by the time we get to the weekend, as close as we've been in the averages in quite a while, it likely comes with a chilly breeze. for the time being, temperatures today up in to the 40's. along with that, a steadier look for rainfall. tomorrow morning. each of the next several days, we'll continue to cool off after tomorrow. a developing westerly temperatures will be as week.

have plenty of clouds out there. the risk up in the north country. we're talking far northern areas like stewartstown, pittsburgh , larnakesser -- lancaster is likely to be down. beyond that, again we are warm enough early this morning that all of this falling in rain showers. likely temperatures only going up from here. we'll continue to see temperatures in the 40's to near 50. temperatures are on the uptick. we start off in the mid to upper 40's up north. we pan out a bit. you are going to notice the milder air is around for another day tomorrow. then much cooler air starts to build in. it isn't going to be a blast of arctic air. high temperatures this time of year. the average high is 37 degrees. another ten degrees above that this morning. the average low is 18. when you are in the lower 40's, that's a solid 25 degrees above normal. we continue on with this regime. clouds today may be a passing shower.

lot of drier hours to the day today as well. as we get later in to the evening, the clouds continue to thicken. here comes the rain. there are going to be a couple of heavier downpours. gradual clearing tomorrow morning. partial sunshine for the afternoon. temperatures by then will be in the lower and mid 50's. then we start to cool off. highs will be in the 40's. some upper 30's up north. sunny skies for wednesday and then increasing clouds thursday ahead of the next system which is now starting to make its way northwest. that system eventually could also bring mainly rainfall. highs by then will be like today in the 40's for the most part. one jump back in to the 50's tomorrow. then you'll notice we're talking lows in the 20's and 30's. highs in the 40's wednesday with sunshine. thursday with rain moving in later in the day. could end as a couple of mixed showers in the north country mainly on friday. there could be a few flurries up in the mountains on saturday. that's it.

>> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now wmur "news 9 daybreak." erin: good morning to you on the december 14th. we're waking up to some areas seeing 40's. how about that? we had a pretty mild weekend weather-wise. we're going to look at what the workweek holds right after the top stories this morning. a man is accused of setting his mom's home on fire. police arrested justin kane sunday evening. investigators say kane poured gasoline on the porch and lit it on fire. a fire in hampstead left a family homeless. it happened just before 6:00 on pine wood drive. no one was injured. and we're expected to learn more today about a deadly rollover crash in exeter. police tried to pullover

to a fire. it happened over 6:00 on pine wood drive. the house was engulfed in flames. hampstead fire says there were no injuries. the red cross is assisting two people. a half a dozen towns battled the blaze. >> the biggest factor is there's no hydrants. we had to bring water in. erin: the cause of the fire remains under investigation. more information now on a deadly rollover crash on route 101 in exeter over the weekend. police say 33-year-old eric williams of hampton was pronounced dead at the scene. police tried to pull williams over for several driving violations just before the crash. he rolled the car several times. williams did not have a seat belt on. he was thrown from the car. >> in the area just east of exit 11 the operator made a sudden movement. the vehicle was causing him to lose control.

and rolled over several times in the median. the vehicle came to rest. erin: and stay with wmur as we learn more about the investigation in to the crash today. a pelham teen is accused of driving more than 100 miles per hour on 93. 19-year-old joseph brown was driving south on 93 in windham just before 9:00 on sunday morning. brown was going 107 miles per hour in a 65 mile per hour zone. he's due in court on january 14th on reckless driving charges. state police cite a man for speeding for the second time in a week. last thursday troopers stopped 21-year-old joe figueroa for driving 107 miles per hour on 93 near the hooksett toll. he was arrested for reckless operation. yesterday the same trooper pulled figueroa over again. he told the trooper he had just picked up his

going about 80. the trooper issued another summons. a massachusetts man is accuse of the expokessing himself. it happened before 11:30. they arrested gary jenke for indecent exposure and lewdness. they are also investigating two previous incidents of indecent exposure that occurred on december 1st and 2nd. closing arguments in the phillip chism murder trial were expected today. they were postponed because one of the lawyers were sick. the defense claims he was insane when he killed the teacher, colleen ritzer two years ago. they say he is faking

sandy hook elementary school. this is the first year the anniversary falls on the school day. there already moments of silence at the middle and high schools. three years ago a gun nan killed 20 students and six adults in the massacre in newton, connecticut. a walk was held in portsmouth sunday to end gun violence. a crowd gathering before marching around downtown. organizers with moms demand action wanted to honor survivors of gun violence. they say mass shootings should not be accepted as the norm. >> we allow this to go on. we really need to do something about this. it is not a partisan issue. it is an issue of safety. erin: similar walks featuring the anti-gun violence activist took place around the country over the weekend. two mosques were vandalized in california saturday night. the vandals spray painted references.

even normal weather, let alone you mix in a couple of below normal days with highs near freezing. erin: it is going to be a shock to the system. kevin: it will be when it gets here. we don't have a lot on the maps. plenty of clouds. a little bit of drizzle. maybe light rain shower. the main event comes in later on tonight. the line of rain located down to the south and west will be making its way in. looks like a couple of heavier downpours are going to be a possibility with that. ahead of that, as you'll notice clouds racing in. just cold enough in far northern areas, it could be freezing rain. there's the rain. along it, there could be a couple of rumbles of thunder. that's a possibility either side of midnight tonight. you get in to far northern areas, we have the freezing rain for the northern half of coos county early this morning through about 9:00. that's the best potential there. elsewhere temperatures

besides drizzle or light rain shower. we're talking lower and mid 40's. you get newpaper to far northern areas, again near the freezing mark in some spots. some of that could be falling in the form of light, freezing drizzle. today it will be more clouds than anything else. not far to go to get to these numbers in the southern parts of the state. it will be a light southerly breeze later this afternoon. as you can see here, it is just a lot of clouds more than anything else. later on this evening, we have the band of rainfall. we get through the evening commute. there's the showers moving through. along with it, there could be one or two heavier downpours and a couple of rumbles of thunder. we will likely start the day in the 40's to lower range of the 50's. jump from there a few more degrees as the westerly wind kicks in. temperatures in the mid to upper 50's in southern areas. mid and upper 40's up north.
