took at this bridge in manchester that has many calling him a hero, but that is a title he is not quite comfortable with. 17-year-old desmond powell thought he was at the manchester committee meeting just to lead the pledge of allegiance, but to his surprise, the focus was on hand. mayor: i know this young man doesn' t want to be called a hero, but he is truly, truly a hero. [applause] mike: powell was recognized for saving a stranger' s life. last month, he was walking home around 9:00 at night on the granite street ridge and saw a man sitting on the edge. >> i got closer and closer and i heard him saying he was going to jump, and i told him to stop. i told him about his family, his kids, how they would be affected if you decide to do this.

addicted to heroin and was overwhelmed by troubles in his life. powell and a passerby brought him to dunkin doughnuts. he gave him $10 for food and drink. >> he asked me if i wanted to change, and i said no, just keep it, and then he just started crying, saying you are such a good person. i wish there was many people like you. mike: when powell called police to pick the man up, he says he ran away but returned shortly later to apologize and get a ride from officers. the mayor honored him with a proclamation on monday. powell is a senior at west high school, plays football, and is a navy junior reserve officer training corps cadets. >> he works hard and does not let that go to his head. he is just a wonderful person. >> i would help anyone who was in trouble. he really needed guidance, and i

americans than ever support sending more ground troops to fight the islamic state terror group. the poll from the associated press found 42% support deploying ground troops, up from 31% last year, and 56% say the country' s military response has not gone far enough, up 10 points in the last year, and it is said that president obama has not gone far enough to explain the country' s goals in fighting the islamic state. today, he tried to reassure americans that the u.s. is making progress, speaking after security team in the pentagon. wmur' s sally kidd reports from washington, d.c. sally: the president says he is looking to build on recent momentum against isis while it knowledge and that some aspects of the u.s. military campaign are not working. president obama: our strategy is
