5:04 pm
mike: the wind is the story and also the mild temperatures what a warm december day out there. take a look at the highs so far today, upper 40's north, mid to upper 50's south. we have seen some gusts to 35 to 40 miles per hour, but not enough to fulfill the criteria for the win advisory, that's why they were dropped earlier today. notice the temperatures still right now on the mild side. although it is cooling down through a good portion of the upper midwest, great lakes and eastern canada. that will be moving on in tonight, into the next couple of days, putting our temperatures a little lower than today. but still above average. notice the wind still busy, from on average about 10 to 15 miles per hour, then the gusts are up to about 20 to 25. notice mount washington is still blowing up to hurricane plus at 102 over 6,000 feet up. it will still be breezy on and off for the evening, as temperatures begin to drop. what about wednesday, and more changes for the end of the week. we'll take a look at the next

what it brings our way in a few minutes. josh: now to commitment 2016 coverage and tonight is the final faceoff of the year for the republican presidential candidates. but this time there's a much different matchup making headlines. brandi hitt is in las vegas where the poll numbers have given momentum to ted cruz. reporter: it's a brand new republican race. senator ted cruz is seeing a surge in the polls, neck and neck with donald trump in iowa. and behind closed doors president. in this audio obtained by the "new york times." >> that's a question of strength, but it's also a question of judgment. reporter: trump whose lead is growing in the national polls now ahead at 38% is also fighting back. >> when you look at the way he's dealt with the senate where he goes in there like a, frankly maniac. reporter: cruz is now next to trump, along with carson whose
5:06 pm
numbers have fallen sharply. >> this is a very fluid contest. >> if you look at the poll, the number one issue, terrorism, donald trump plays well to that. reporter: terrorism is expected to be a hot topic tonight with trump's recent controversial proposal. >> a total and complete shutdown of muslims entering the united states. reporter: a new abc news "washington post" poll shows 59% of republicans support a ban on muslim, 38% think it's the wrong thing to do. but among all adults those numbers shift, with 60% thinking it's the wrong thing to do. national security is expected to dominate tonight's debate, since the last republican faceoff there have been deadly attacks in paris and san bernardino. a threat today also shut down all schools in los angeles. brandi hitt, abc news, las vegas. josh: we'll have more on the school threats in los angeles in a few moments. but the democrats debate on saturday here in new hampshire. you can watch that live on wmur and our coverage begins at 8:00.
5:07 pm
jennifer: tonight a man convicted in connection to the murder of a new hampshire police officer is back in prison. kevin paul is already on parole when he was arrested on new charges in massachusetts. wmur's andy hershberger is live now with some tough words from today's parole hearing. reporter: prosecutors say the crimes that put kevin paul in prison were very serious and he just doesn't follow the rules when he's let out. prosecutors say with kevin paul was given a second chance at freedom he threw it away and went back to a life of crime. paul was back before the state parole board tuesday, just months after he was released following 17 and a half years in prison charges related to the 1997 murder of a police officer. >> it's clear that you can take him at his word. his words mean nothing and quite frankly it appears that he thinks that your words mean nothing. if you're going to say zero tolerance, with all due respect it has to be zero tolerance.
5:08 pm
reporter: paul was just 18 years old when he watched gordon perry shoot and kill police officer jeremy sharon. perry is serving life in prison. paul pleaded guilty to several charges. tuesday a victim's advocate read a letter written by sharon's mother. >> at my first parole hearing that i attended for him he addressed me with a statement of being an innocent by-stander. at jeremy's death. apparently he forgot that he was the one who shot at police as thaw chased him up 93. reporter: the board found that paul violated 10 of 13 conditions of his parole that included drug use and leaving the state without permission. he is also still facing new firearms related charges in superior court. the board revoked paul's parole for two years. >> those are significant offenses that he committed, that's what got him to prison. and given the breaks he's been given, he should do everything possible to stay on the right track, and he hasn't done that. reporter: paul can apply for another parole board hearing

every six months, but there is no guarantee that that will be granted. andy hershberger, wmur news 9. jennifer: time to get a look at how traffic is moving, this is 293 in manchester. josh: peggy james has a live look at the road home. peggy: hi, everyone. we were doing pretty well coming up from the massachusetts border on 93 until just recently. you're good from salem up to manchester, but we do have a crash on 93 at exit 6 in manchester. that's in the left lane. so you can expect to start seeing delays on 93 northbound through the city. beyond that 293 is the steady ride, north and southbound. minor slowdowns at the hooksett tolls, then good to the bow junction. on 101 in bedford you're getting heavy through the usual stretch between 114 and wallace road. the everett turnpike extra company through the merrimack stretch northbound and 101 is a good ride to and from the

and for yours. i'm hillary clinton and i approve this message. josh: a death investigation is under way after the bodies of two children were found inside a storage unit in northern california. police say a third child is a live but has been severely abused and that child was taken into surgery. the children who died were ages 3 and 5.
5:13 pm
investigators have not released their names but say they are not siblings. police have made two arrest, a 39-year-old woman and a 17-year-old boy. both have been charged with child abuse and torture. jennifer: a california lawmaker on the house intelligence committee says threats made to two of the country's school districts appear to both be hoaxes. in los angeles county, school officials canceled classes after an e-mail threat describing a planned shooting. that city's police chief says the threat was specific about the plans. it also implied that explosive device may be involved. but its response stood in stark contrast to new york, which received the same threat but kept schools open. the mayor there called the e-mail outlandish. but l.a. leaders say they support the district's decision. >> as a parent and as a mayor, certainly i'm here to support this school district as it seeks our help to ensure that we can look at each one of these

campuses and make sure they are safe for all of our children. and an abundance of caution is something that i think all of us who have children appreciate. reporter: this consideration for california, los angeles county is right next to san bernardino county where 14 people were killed in a terror attack earlier this month. also one college in san bernardino county was closed today too because of a bomb threat. and a new terror alert system is expected to be unveiled tomorrow. the color coded system created after 9/11 has been criticized for not being specific enough. the new bulletins are expected to provide a short summary of any threats including the area and potential targets like infrastructure as well as any action being taken to respond to the threat. josh: police say a disgruntled customer intentionally smashed his truck into the lobby of a hotel in oklahoma. the hotel owners say a problem with the man's debit card had him worried about being double

they thought they had worked things out, but he came back later that day and threatened them. >> you walk out of the door and threaten my life, so just you stay here, and i'll roll over you, you stay on the desk and you'll see. josh: a few minutes later the truck was barreling through the lobby, one of the women in that video is the owner's wife, she and the other women do have some bruises but are otherwise okay. jennifer: the southwestern u.s. is shivering tonight after a storm system that dumped up to two feet of snow. it's also sending desert temperatures down below freezing. utah and colorado got the biggest batch of snow, the first major storm of the season. denver's airport canceled hundreds of flights today. salt lake city's airport had already measured more snow than it got all of last winter. and parts of new england do look the way you would expect them to christmas. so let's get a look at the view out of maine at lunch time where
5:16 pm
things at a crawl. josh: new hampshire looked a lot like that on this date in 2013 two years ago today. that's when the first significant snowstorm of that season arrived. this year though much of the state still looking at temperatures in the 50's. josh judge has a breakdown of these above average temperatures so far. josh: yes, hard to believe it was just two years ago on this day. this is a photo that i took actually of someone snow blowing their driveway exactly two years ago today on december 15, 2013. then we go to today and there's your high temperature, it's unofficially reaching 57 in concord today, 58 in manchester and portsmouth, amazing stuff. it was windy, but you felt some sunshine and that warmth. the record for today, 60 degrees from back in 2008. we did not reach that. so it can get higher, but not very often. now we're seeing a lot of scenes like this with christmas decorations and no snow for them.
5:17 pm
so i thought i'd take a look at the warmest december, we're here on the 15th of december. believe it or not, the warmest can december on record is 1891 with an average temperature of 35.4 and the number 2 is 1881. if you look at this entire list, there's only two months from the 2000's and that was 2001 and 2006. however when you factor in today through the 15th, we are way above that. of course that is so far, this is the warmer half of the month. so we'll have to see if that holds, but right now at least we are way above average, that's for sure. so let's take a look at maybe whether those trends will continue. we can start looking a little bit longer range, mike. mike: looks like even though we cool down in the coming days it will state remain above average. in the lakes region today, clouds and showers moving out early. some partial sunshine again, as josh just talked about,
5:18 pm
right now lingering showers up north, then falling in the form of snow in northern parts of maine. there could be a few mixed showers across the mountain tops. then later this evening the showers will come to an end. right now still holding onto 40's to around 50. north and west of the lakes region, upper valley, great north woods, upper 20's atop mount washington. still in the 50's from concord points south and southeast. wind continue to be active out but below wind advisory criteria, so no real threat of go through the night. the winds will die down by early tomorrow morning. overnight, upper 20's north, lower to mid 30's south. very close to normal highs for this time of year as opposed to normal lows, even though it is getting a little cooler. speaking of cooler, take a look, northern tier, now beginning to see the temperatures fall off
5:19 pm
and that's being felt through a good portion of the midwest, northern plains, all the way down into a good portion of the rockies. we do get a little cooler over the next couple days but still above average. by friday another surge of warmth before it cools down closer to the average for a change by the weekend. right now showers up north, then later tomorrow night clouds begin to increase with the next system even though it's snowing in the plains states. that will move off to our north and west, and that means more rain versus snow. but early thursday morning, with a little bit of sprinkle activity or a touch of of drizzle and temperatures near freezing, we could see some slick conditions out there, especially in some of the side roads and untreated surface, we'll watch that closely in time. for tonight, clearing skies, again it will be cooling down. overnight up north about mid 20's will do it. 30 to 35 for many and those winds, notice 20 plus in spots early. but then later in the evening and overnight it will drop to five to 10 miles per hour and again the skies will clear, but
5:20 pm
the clouds will tend to linger across northern parts of the state. for tomorrow, plenty of sunshine, a little bit breezy, but not nearly as windy as today. still about 10 degrees above average. a little tricky early thursday morning, a slight chance of mixed precipitation in the form of rain or freezing rain, very light, but just a fine mist with temperatures below freezing, could result in some light glazing. we'll be tracking that over the next 24 hours, and then rain showers in the afternoon and at night. friday looks like some partial sun and back into the mid to upper 40's. could be a light mix at the coast that sneaks in early and night. but other than that dry for the weekend, windy, but colder. and that means the snow guns will be blasting 24-7, so get ready for that. josh: thanks, mike. coming up after the break corks a mother's antidepressants autism? a new look at this issue. reporter: i'm sally kidd in washington, a deal to avert a government shutdown could be

5:25 pm
researchers found this increased risk was most pronounced in women taking these antidepress an drugs in later pregnancy. but how much does this risk really go up for women in their second and third trimesters, the risk of autism was doubled. but doctors responding to the study are quick to point out that even in these pregnancies, less than two in 100 kids end up with autism spectrum disorders. and for women who are pregnant and need depression treatment, skipping meds can put both them and their babies at risk. in other words, it's a complicated question that needs to be thoroughly discussed between a woman and her doctor. i'm dr. timothy johnson. josh: straight ahead, the former town planner accused of stealing people's identities could avoid jail time if she follows a new agreement. jennifer: and it's not too late to get your packages where they need to be by christmas without paying extra fees.

but a lot of dry air building in after the rain last night and early this morning. right now those gusty winds have been active a good part of the day, beginning to relax in a few spots, but still a built breezy in other locales. looking ahead, here we go, clearing and cooler tonight. the clouds may linger in the north country, but for many it's a bright and cool wednesday to follow tomorrow before the next system arrives. that one sneaks in, early, early thursday morning, with a touch of krifl that may fall on cold enough surfaces where it's sub freezing, so you may experience a touch of freezing rain early thursday morning. then it's scattered rain showers late with more rain during the late part of the evening before it dries out again for friday and good part of the weekend. speaking of the weekend, finally seasonable temperatures by saturday and sunday. rain showers across a good portion of the white mountains over the past several hours, lit continue as we go through the next hour or so before diminishing and working off to the south and southeast.
5:45 pm
skies may partially clear up north, but a lot of clouds will linger there. elsewhere it's dry and on the mild side. although not as warm as what we had a few hours ago when we top off near 60. right now it's upper 40's and low 50's. cooler in the monadnock region, a good part of that area in the mid to upper 40's, a good portion of the lake sunapee zone, low to mid 40's and lakes region not that bad, upper 40's to around 50. the winter chill seeping in across northern parts of the state where it's 32 in stewartstown and 31 in pittsburgh. eventually it gets cold enough across the north country so snow guns will be blasting tonight into early tomorrow morning. look at future temperatures though, really not all that cold, even though it will be cooler than the past 24 hours. it does dip back into the upper 20's north, but 0 to 35 over central and southern parts of the state. cool air building in, but not arctic cold. still temperatures are running above average.
5:46 pm
