this is where the action happens after the debate. we will check in with kristen malley. >> being able to give voice to hearts of young people in our country. you rarely find people that want to bash american immigrants or people that want to force us to have id cards according to our faith, like donald trump. i enjoyed tonight' s debate. in a way, even though this is the holiday season, even though i would prefer more debates on weekdays, i feel like tonight was the first debate as we enter into the decision-making window in new hampshire and also in iowa. anyway. that is my take.

josh: martin o' malley talking about his performance. let' s go to adam sexton who is outside the debate hall with a recap. adam: only three candidates on the stage. in contrast to the republicans who have more time for interaction, although they did not go down the road of conflict too often. they saved their harshest criticisms for the republican front-runner. off the bat, bernie sanders address the campaign data breach. mr. sanders: it was a breach because the dnc vendor screwed up. information came to our campaign . our staff to the wrong thing. they looked at that information. >> he fired one staffer and said he was sorry. ms. clinton: obviously we were distressed when we learned of it .

opinions and jean mackin is live with the focus group and joins us live. jean: they came from all over the state with an important thing in common, they said they are undecided going into tonight' s debate. here they are here at wmur. how many people think they are closer to making a decision after tonight' s debate? all eight of you. made that decision? two people. clearly something very important. what struck you while you watched the debate? >> there is a range of issues out there. all of them, if they are not directly part of the economy, they are related to it. our economic problems are the first and foremost.

across new hampshire and vermont are helping the city of keene. a malfunction at the liberty utilities gas plant this morning has affected more than 1200 customers. this comes after four people were sent to the hospital for carbon monoxide exposure. shelley: wmur' s stephanie woods is live in keene with the latest.

smelled the natural gas, the red cross that of an emergency center here and they have blankets and hot meals. so far no one has signed up. trucks going up and down the road. it' s alarming to see that many that often. stephanie: amanda was with her the saturday. it liberty utility shut off the propane to her apartment after high levels of carbon monoxide were detected next door. >> they wanted to be cautious about it. i have young children at home. it was a red flag for me. stephanie: live at her utilities says there was a malfunction at the gas plant where propane and air are mixed. propane was sent to 12050 customers, which can release

fire departments are helping knock on doors and check homes and shut off the gas to any house with a high co level. >> we have hot meals, warm place to stay if anybody needs it. stephanie: after fire fires responded, the red cross set up a shelter. the only people who showed up came for the christmas concert. she says she is lucky to have other plans. >> i' m probably going to stay at my parents house. they live down the road. especially for the kids. stephanie: the warming center here just closed at 11:00 and we spoke to the fire department and they are checking on all utility customers in the city. they are about halfway through and will not stop until everyone is safe.

her. what bothered me, we did something wrong. there was a breach caused by the vendor hired by the dnc. we should have sent that information back. we are not going to use that information. that was wrong. i apologize. what the dnc did was shut down our flow of information. information we had put into their programming. information we had paid for. they said you can' t. that was unacceptable. over the last day or so, hundreds of thousands of people have said that is wrong. i hope that is behind us. josh: not the only democratic debate. a lot of people complaining that was the saturday before christmas. was that intentional?

in iowa, the debate was the night of the big football game. i hope a lot of people watched tonight. i think it was good. there is a desire on the part of the leadership of the dnc to protect secretary clinton. >> this is the final chance of voters have a chance to see all three democratic candidates before they vote. of course you have a objectives. do you feel like you hit yours? mr. sanders: as soon as you leave you say, why didn' t i say that? in terms of foreign policy, secretary clinton and i disagree in a significant way. she voted for the war in iraq. i think it was the worst lender in the history of america. she was involved in the situation in libya getting rid of qaddafi, opening up the space

in my view, the united states can' t do it alone. we need to have a broad coalition of major countries working with muslim countries to destroy isis. i don' t believe we can be asked to do it all. josh: if you re having one of those moments, have you identified what that is? mr. sanders: people should know, we need to be changing our of defense. we spent $600 billion, weigh less than 5% is going to fighting isis. we need to get rid of military programs and weapons systems designed to fight the cold war and focus on our major concern, international terrorism. >> you were in new hampshire

you mentioned you need this young block of voters to support you. how critical are they to your success? mr. sanders: in general democrats win when the voter turnout is high. i have been please not only here in new hampshire, as well as other polls all over the country, while we are losing to hillary clinton around the country, we are doing better among young people. i' m gratified by that. people say young people don' t care about politics. we are bringing them in. the reason we stand in chance to win in new hampshire and iowa is because there' s going to be a large turnout. a lot of people are saying enough is enough. we need a political revolution. billionaire class. that is the message we have been bringing forth which is resonating. josh: quickly, both candidates

s statement about refugees. you are disgruntled you did not get a chance to weigh in. mr. sanders: my dad came to this country at the age of 17. throughout our history what has made us great is we are the beacon of hope to many. can united states solve this terrible refugee crisis alone? of course not. it would be inconsistent with our values and history to say to people who are leaving syria and afghanistan with nothing more than the shirts on their backs that you can' t come to the united states. obviously that got to be screened. that goes without saying. i don' t think we can turn our backs on her own history. josh: you have been critical of the media. about not talking about the issues we should. climate change did not come up. energy.

nothing people will be talking about in the weeks and months ahead. in the beginning, martin o' malley, trailing by a lot, was definitely trying to insert himself, trying to discuss rings that -- discuss things. perhaps knowing this was one of his last chances to get in front of a large new hampshire audience. he is very low in the polls and trying to get into that sanders and clinton territory. one issue was gun control. mr. o' malley: there are profound differences here. senator sanders voted against the brady bill. he voted to give immunity to gun dealers. he voted against research dollars to look into this issue. secretary clinton changes her position every election year. one position in 2000 and

abuse, she' s heard from families here how much that has touched people' s lives. gun violence. not a lot of people have personal experience with this. it is something people are fearful of. it' s a good opportunity for new hampshire to see she has listened to what voters are concerned about. she has internalized that and put forward plans to combat those problems and make a difference. as good as she is on the national stage, she is just as focused on what she can do to improve your life and that is what motivates her. >> in regards to her performance, top moment? >> may the force be with you was good. her opening statement where she said i have a plan to keep us safe. what we need to focus on, driving as president, is the problems your family is facing. >> thank you for your time.

he struggles when it comes to foreign policy. secretary clinton has a solid grasp on every issue. mike: not far from the clinton gathering, a dozen martin o' malley supporters watched. they thought he was strong in his stance on gun control. >> talked about his record on gun control. he passed and safety legislation and talked about how the other candidates don' t have as strong of a record. >> he was going after the candidates. rightly so. they' ve got some wavering positions. mike: hundreds filled a room at the radisson to cheer on bernie sanders. they were pleased with his approach in the debate. >> he is not in it for the money or power. >> bernie sanders represents me. he represents my generation.

i think he realizes this is a tough battle for him. mike: volunteers say they will be focused on making phone calls, knocking on doors, and working hard for their candidate. josh: looking for winners and losers. see if there is going to -- so much to talk about. what do you think? >> we come out of this debate where we were going into it. if anybody benefited, it was probably hillary clinton. she wanted to make it through the debate without making a major gaffe. jennifer: what do the republicans use now? >> they will pull out a lot of little bits. mainly her saying the issues

the 27% increase in premiums, etc. josh: what do you make of the back-and-forth of the dnc controversy? he apologized. she sort of accepted it. what do you make of that? >> well, it was an opportunity for the sanders campaign to go back harder against the democratic party. they have to be dental. clinton was able to take the high ground on the issue of technology, which is unusual. jennifer: different tone from martin o' malley. he went into the debate looking for a dust up. did he get any traction? >> he might have been too aggressive when he was criticizing people for bickering after they were apologizing. that was not the right tone. he was trying to be too forceful.

rather than hit a home run. josh: he talked about gun control. >> he may have. the biggest problem is he is seen as a third wheel. the moderators were doing that as well. it makes it difficult for him to get into the race. jennifer: the issue of hair when -- heroin is something we talk about. did the candidates land any punches in terms of relating to the viewers who see this? >> they were sympathetic. sanders might have had the strongest talk about policy. o' malley referencing the fact he was a governor and he dealt with this was important to show experience. i don' t think anybody landed.

jennifer: he went on to say "a candidates would overpromise tonight and under deliver. when asked if he would support trunk, bush said he intends to be the nominee adding new hampshire voters take their job here very seriously. also south carolina senator lindsey graham also in the state today. joining him on the campaign trail, arizona senator john mccain. the pair attended a house party in manchester where graham talked about the threat posed by isis. he said his dozens of trips to iraq and afghanistan have taught him most people there do not support the terror group. >> most people in islam do not by what isis is selling. it is up to us to help them say no. most fathers and mothers do not want to give their children to isil.
