ms. clinton: we need to move on. sen. sanders: i want to apologize to my supporters. ms. cling ton: this getting fun. josh: from saint anselm college, at home it is sunday morning but a debate just finished up. we have andy smith from unh and chris from saint anselm college, a professor of politics. a big picture first. let' s start with you. what was your take away. chris: my take away is i think it is a status quo debate. t think anyone had any disastrous moments. this in the same position they were going in. josh: coming into this, bernie sanders is the front runner.
10:02 am
did he do any damage to his campaign or did perry clinton catch up? andy: one weakness has been that democrats have seen quentin as the most electable candidate in november and the candidate has the right experience to be president. nothing' s interested today diminished that. he may still be the candidate that democratic voters want to vote for. according to polls, voters are thinking clinton is the candidate they should vote for. josh: a lot of ground covered in the debate. coming into it was the scandal, however you characterize it. around bernie sanders, hillary clinton and voter data. sanders filed a suit to get his data back before the debate. we knew it was going to come up during the debate. here' s a little bit. deserve an apology? sen. sanders: yes, i apologize.

supporters. this is not the type of campaign we run and if i find anybody fired. >> how do you react? ms. clinton: i appreciate that comment, bernie, it really is this. back and there has been an agreement for an independent inquiry into what did happen. we should move on because i do not think the american people are not interested in this. josh: all right. we will see how much interest there is in this topic. andy, what do you make of bernie sanders simply apologizing? saying we eradicated the problem. and her response? andy: he had to do that. this helps clinton as well. her major area of weakness has been the democrats seeing her as
10:04 am
anything she could do or her campaign could do to diminish the strength that sanders has had on ethics, ethical issues, is a win. she comes out being the candidate able to take the high ground on electronic data issues, which is surprising given what we' ve seen with her e-mail and file server. josh: this was not exactly the free pass senator sanders gave hillary clinton during the first start talking about the darn e-mails. she did say we were worried about this. but it is time to move forward. chris: andy is right. this is sort of leveling the playing field between clinton and sanders. there' s a possibility of bad blood between their strongest supporters but for most rank-and-file democrats this is a settled issue. josh: without any new information, you' ve seen the

moving forward in the debate, martin o' malley came into this very aggressive and wanted to have a moment. he went after it on gun control. mr. o' malley: isil training videos are telling lone wolves the easiest way to buy a combat weapon in america is at a gun show because of the political approach of washington that both of my two colleagues on this state have represented for the last 40 years. sen. sander: let' s come down a little bit. ms. clinton: let' s tell the truth. sen. sanders: you can do all the speeches you want. just to set the record straight, in 1988 i ran for house in vermont. three candidates. one candidates that i don' t think it is a great idea that we sell automatic weapons in this country used by the military to
10:06 am
gun people said there are three candidates in the race, you vote for one of the others but not bernie sanders. i lost by 3 percentage points. ms. clinton: i agree with governor o' malley and i applaud his record in maryland. i wish he would not represent mine. i' ve been for the brady bill and against assault weapons. josh: bernie sanders and hillary clinton way ahead in the polls, ahead of martin o' malley. leaving him off at one point when he was aggressive. do you think he got anybody' s attention? chris: he did come on very strong, perhaps too much early on. his response on the gun issue was interesting because it is one of the few issues where he can claim to be to the left of sanders and clinton. the problem he faces is that so many democrats have lined up behind one or the other. i am not sure there' s much room for him to grow.
10:07 am
hampshire primary, is a safe to say he' s not going to pull off any major upsets. is there a watermark he needs to hit to stay alive? andy: if he does not get about 10% come i don' t think he can move on. i do not see him being able to do well in iowa, a state that relies on organization. in south carolina is dominated by african-american voters who have lined up with clinton and looks like they would line up with clinton in 2008 before barack obama. josh: as far as gun control, there was back-and-forth from all candidates. andy: it was interesting because it ended after disagreement clinton basically saying we are all democrats, elect one of us issue. for a candidate who a lot of them are cuts might see as being unfairly favored -- a lot of democrats might see as being
10:08 am
committee, that was a smart move. josh: sheep is assumed -- she positioned herself. chris: she' s been running a general election campaign for the last few months. it shows the weakness of the strategies both sanders and o' malley took in the campaign, that they should both be attacking clinton to make their points and show differences between them. she looks like the peacemaker beat between them. josh: speaking of the republican field, front runner, donald trump in the context of his call for a muslim ban. let' s hear what they had to say. ms. clinton: i worry that the rhetoric from the republicans and particularly donald trump is sending a message to muslims in the u.s. and literally around the world that there is a clash of civilizations. that there is some kind of
10:09 am
which then, i believe, fans the flames of radicalization. sen. sanders: somebody like trump comes along and says i know the answer. all the mexicans are criminals and rapists, hate the mexicans, those are your enemies. we hate all the muslims because all the muslims are terrorists. meanwhile, the rich get richer. mr. o' malley: a proud american muslim, one of his little voice said to him, "dad, what happens if donald trump wins and we have to move out of our homes?" these are very real issues. josh: all right. are you surprised that donald trump was invoked in the debate? the only republican. andy: i am not surprised at all. first off, he' s a lightning rod setting the tone for the republican nomination battle. to a large extent, even democrats are forced to respond
10:10 am
it is easier for them than it is for republicans and frankly it is like a softball for democrats to swat. josh: you will say that, they loved him being called up. such a contrast in positions. chris: every democrat in the country would love donald trump to be the republican nominee. when clinton goes after him in a debate, that is great for trump because he can turn around and say see, republicans, the democrats are scared of me. josh: you know what was interesting when they were talking about a muslim ban, it morphed into a discussion involving the resettlement of refugees. sitting in the audience was governor hassan. the question went to hillary quentin, saying that governor hassan says we need to put a pause on the program, what do you think? there was some contrast there and when
10:11 am
is there a surprise? does this stick around? is this bad news for maggie hassan? chris: it does have the potential to stick around. i could see this hurting hassan next year and the senate race if democrats decide to vote for a third party or skip voting. in long-term i don' t forget will have a huge impact. josh: a situation where she had in. chance to say anything as much as he wanted to. what was your thought on the maggie hassan component? andy: it was interesting to bring a new hampshire angle and raising the profile of that new hampshire senate race to the rest of the country. i do not think it is going to make much difference. if there were a strong primary challenger against hassan, that could be an issue but in a you will see too many republicans attacking hassan for taking a republican position. josh: regime change was a topic
10:12 am
national security and foreign policy. let' s hear what the candidates had to say. sen. sanders: that i worry too much that secretary clinton is too much into regime change. a little bit too aggressive without knowing what the unintended consequent as might be. ms. clinton: with all due respect, you voted for regime change with respect to libya. you joined the senate and voting to get rid of qaddafi and you asked that there be a security council validation of that with a resolution. mr. o' malley: i would suggest that we need to leave the cold war behind us and we need to put together new alliances and new approaches to dealing with this and restrain ourselves. secretary clinton was gleeful when qadhafi was torn apart. josh: regime change was talked about. was this the biggest area for the democrats of contrast? chris: i think so. this gets at a problem that

campaign, a lot of democrats see her as too hawkish and easy to use force, willing to talk about regime change. i' m not sure sanders or o' malley obama did. josh: were you surprised that other things were not brought up in the debate? foreign policy is dominating the discussion. democrats have been talking about climate change in energy, things along those lines. it did not come up. andy: income inequality came tangentially when sanders tried to bring it up. the economic issues that are talked about much. moving forward but this is the last and only democratic primary in new hampshire. there will be one more in south hampshire primary. the dnc sets the schedule, what thank you for joining us. after the debate was the news 9 set.

interview with us, the dnc was an issue and the controversy surrounding it. here' s our discussion. thanks for joining us. you gave an explanation talking about the dnc controversy about how a staffer was fired. gore campaign has been clear that it feels a certain way. do you feel the democratic national committee has chosen its candidate, if not supporting its candidate. sen. sanders: i think everybody understands that hillary clinton , who i have a lot of respect for, is the establishment candidate. virtually the entire establishment is supporting her including the leadership of the dnc. we did something that was wrong. there was a breach caused by the vendor hired by the dnc. we should have sent that

have looked at it. we are not going to use that and i apologize. the dnc proceeded to shut down our information that we had put into their programming. information we paid for. information. you are volunteers and supporters, who are you going to iowa? that was unacceptable. over the last day or so, hundreds of thousands of people have written to the dnc saying that is wrong. i hope that is behind us. josh: you are not the democrat -- the only democrat to say it was the last saturday before christmas, do you think that was intentional? sen. sanders: i do. and iowa, it was the night before a big football game. i think there' s a desire on the

dnc to protect secretary clinton. >> this is the final chance that voters have a chance to see all three democratic candidates before they vote. you head into a night like this with big objectives, do you think you hit every one of yours? sen. sanders: as soon as you leave the floor, you say why didn' t i say that? here' s what the issues are, in terms of foreign policy, secretary clinton and i disagree in a pretty significant way. she voted for the war in iraq and i think that was the worst foreign-policy lender in modern history of america. i did not. she was involved in libya getting rid of qaddafi and failing. she believes in a no-fly zone in syria and i do not. in my view, the u.s. cannot do it alone. we need a broad coalition of major countries working with

i do not believe we unilaterally can be asked to do it all. josh: if you are having one of those moments where you are saying i wish i did say this, is? sen. sanders: one of the areas is people should know that when we talk about destroying isis, we need to be changing our of defense. we spent about $600 billion, way fighting isis. weigh less than that. i think we need to get rid of military programs and weapons systems that are designed to fight the cold war and focus on our major concern, which is international terrorism. >> you were in hollis, new hampshire this weekend you mentioned that you need the young voters to support you. how critical are they? sen. sanders: in general, democrats win when the voter i'

only here in new hampshire, your pull as well as other polls and pulls all of the country, while we are losing to heather clinton in many polls, we are doing better among young people and i am gratified by that. , people say young people do not care about politics we are bringing them into our campaign and there' s a lot of excitement. the reason we stand a chance to win in new hampshire and iowa is. because i think there' s going to be a large voter turnout i think there are a lot of people saying enough is enough, we need a political revolution and we need to take on the billionaire class. we need an economy that works for working families and that is the message we' ve been ringing forth that is resonating. josh: most candidates were offered the opportunity to respond to maggie hassan' s statement that she would hit the pause button when it comes to refugee resettlement. you were disgruntled by the fact that he did not give you a chance to weigh in. sen. sanders: my dad came to this country at the age of 17 without the nickel in his

m joined by executive director neil levesque of the institute of politics. thank you for the hospitality. how many debates have you been through. neil: three or four cycles. josh: what was your take away? neil: five days before the christmas, the gloves came off for the first time. i think o' malley did not have a good night and clinton and sanders clearly got into it. normally we would have seen a television commercial or break and abc did not seem to want to cut to the break because the candidates were going at it with such a v viscery. part of it was the data breach. josh: they did not spend a lot of time on that. neil: they spent enough to get it started and it bled into the other issues.

the room and the candidates wanted to vent on that stage. josh: one question that was asked, education. that is why i recognized it. how do you come up with the college affordability is on the minds of a lot of people. did your students weigh in? neil: they did weigh in. 1.3 trillion dollars in outstanding student debt, i' m sure most people watching this know what i' s a crushing blow for america. we have that much debt over our heads. neil: you asked -- josh: you asked it well because they were talking about it on the campaign trail. somebody has got to pay for it. neil: you cannot just shifted to taxpayers did someone has got to pay for it and when you do not address why the costs are going up, you are going to have a problem.

the new hampshire students. a lot of them are coming back for the holiday season. maybe they' ve got a chance to get an answer from democratic candidates. josh: you are busy but the question without a lot of follow-up, heroin, did you hear anything new? neil: i thought hillary clinton was perfect and she showed and defeat a personalization to a problem that is hitting new hampshire. 400 deaths a year. i thought she hit that out of the park. josh: she' s been talking about it on the campaign trail. let' s talk about saint anselm college. the role the institute of politics is playing. this is becoming a must stop. neil: this debate is no exception, we have more campaign activity on this campus than any campus and the u.s.

usually we at this point are having almost 2-3 candidates a day coming in for television hits our meeting with students or giving town hall meetings. it is a lot of activity and it is wonderful for the students. they are getting experiences that you cannot get anywhere else and they are understanding the professional side of politics. no matter what profession they go into, politics will affect them. so getting some experience at saint anselm is great. josh: no question about it. students getting engaged. a strange moment during the debate, you partner with politics and eggs and you have different forums. how often does a candidate have to have a bathroom break and do they make it back in time? neil: certainly we understood where she was. but when hillary came back out, sometimes timing is right. good politics.
