now, wmur news 9 at 5:00. josh: a mother is in jail left a police say she used her eight-year-old son to help her shoplift. it comes less than hour after she was in court for a similar crime. good evening, i' m josh mcelveen. jennifer: i' m jennifer vaughn. police say 33-year-old adelaida jordan went from the courthouse to kohls grabbing more than $1000 in merchandise. heather hamel is live in salem with the new details in the case. heather: police call it astonishing the lieutenent , saying he can't even wrap his mind around what she was thinking. surveillance video captures jordan and an 18-year-old relative and her 8-year-old son as they walk through kohls. police say loss prevention officers picked up on their strange behavior quickly watchin gthem closely with the cameras and police say at one point they bring items to the changing rooms remove the packaging and , stick it in their back packs. before heading out the door.

jennifer: tonight, a small town in the lakes region is taking a heroin epidemic. the moultonborough police chief says the goal is simple, to save wmur' newsroom with why not everyone is cheering about the approach. amy: the acronym is paari. police assisted addiction and recovery initiative. it was founded earlier this year by the police chief in gloucester massachusetts and is garnering national attention and for the most part praise. at 4400 year round residents moultonboro is tiny in comparison to gloucester' s 30,000. but the chief here says he' s committed to harnessing every available resource to battle the opioid crisis. the paari program is part data base part mind set. a shift from criminalizing a person with a substance abuse disorder to helping that person. the chief says the program doesn' t cost the town a dime. >> decades ago we should have started a war on addictions not a war on drugs because the war on drugs is an impossible one to win. the mindset is not to look at
