sean: now on daybreak, police say a crime spree that started in new hampshire and did in florida with one man dead and another behind bars. dozens of animals have been rescued from a property in sandown. officials need your help to provide the necessary care. josh: it is already a warm morning and we already --are already just getting started. sean: several people are dead after severe storms and tornadoes down south. search efforts continued long into the night area -- night.

now, wmur news 9 daybreak. sean: it is going to be hard to believe that it is christmas eve on this thursday, december 24. good morning, everybody. i' m sean mcdonald. you called it july weather before. josh: it is july in christmas. pretty strange stuff out there. you may as well get outside and enjoy it. tomorrow, too, by the way. temperatures will be above average the next couple days. here is a look at rainy colebrook. the rain has been around the entire state overnight. it may have woken you up with heavy downpours. most of it has pulled away. as we pull away, you see there is a chance for a few more passing showers today. otherwise, we will see clouds and brightening skies and breaks of sun later today.

the record in concord today is 57 degrees from way back in 1871. we will shatter that by at least 10 degrees. portsmouth shattering a record by 15-20 degrees. we will talk about how much warmer it will be on christmas day, as well. let' s take a look at your morning drive in the granite state. for a look at that, we' re joined live by deb davidson. fog and wet roadways to deal with. deb: exactly, josh. allow some extra time as you are heading out for that. some wet roads and fog. traffic is up to speed and moving well. hardly anyone is on the road. it is a great time to start holiday travel. on the southbound side of 293, detours are in place at the exit 4 en route.

is a hands-free state. if you are visiting us, please keep that in mind. this report is being brought to you by peters honda, nissan, and kia of nashua. i' m deb davidson for 95.7 wzid. sean: thanks. topping our news, police say one new hampshire man is dead and another behind bars after a crime spree that started in the granite state earlier this month and just ended in florida. ray brewer joins us live from deerfield where police say derek kelley drags a police officer with his truck while michael hilber was in the passenger seat. good morning. ray: good morning. that incident happened back on december 2, when derek kelley took off in the pickup truck, dragging that officer for about 20 feet into oncoming traffic. police say in the passenger seat at that time was michael hilber of rochester.

involved with at least two armed robberies. on tuesday, police in hernando county, florida say michael hilber robbed a dollar general the getaway vehicle. >> a blue chevy truck. when i was in the truck with them. process. mistake by coming to hernando county. ray: police shot and killed michael hilber after he ran into the woods after allegedly threatening officers. derek kelley was caught yesterday morning and is being held without bond. he faces charges in florida and several in new hampshire. sean: ray, thanks. a man is in the hospital after he was struck by a van well

he was wearing dark clothing and walking close to the white line on lowell road. the trauma team was activated at the hospital, but police say the man was conscious when he was taken away in an ambulance. a former nursing assistant is now facing criminal charges amid accusations that he sexually assaulted an elderly patient. timothy morrissey worked at belair nursing home in goffstown. a grand jury has indicted him on charges for allegedly assaulting a 79-year-old resident with dementia. his license has been permanently revoked. man wanted in connection with half a dozen robberies. 31-year-old matthew martin dangerous. the most recent case was an armed robbery at a credit union in ludlow, vermon. >> he' s armed, he'

services along with some specialized that care -- vet care that will be needed. they' re are asking for donations. a hebron woman is accused of stealing more than $100,000 from the state liquor commission. dorothy champagne has been indicted on 36 theft charges. she was an employee when the alleged crimes took place. they say she diverted commission funds to a personal account. two rochester men are due in court today to face charges in connection with several burglaries. when police arrested zachary sutton and joshua day, they found several items reported stolen earlier this month. investigators say more charges are possible. search efforts continued through the night after a deadly storm system swept across parts of the south. at least six people are dead and several tornadoes have been

warmer air is streaming in from the south. temperatures have steadily pushed upwards or held steady all night long. they will continue to move up much more rapidly as we get going on this day, as well. the visibility is a little better than it was. still some areas, four miles visibility in concord. only a mile visibility in manchester. three miles at the seacoast area. keep that in mind as you are driving around this morning. you may run in and out of localized areas of fog and some missed and drizzle and sprinkles in some locations. most of the rain has pulled away . heavier downpours were around overnight. that batch has now since moved on, almost pulling out of maine at the moment. there are some more showers that will be approaching.

they may hold together just enough so you could have a passing shower or two later today. the general trend will be for gradual improvement. the clouds will thin and we will see brightening skies and pees ks afternoon. this air mass is so warm that it moves in and pushes those temperatures up to record levels we see. you do see cooler weather off to our west and that will move in over the weekend and into next week. the next couple of days, unseasonably mild. here is today through midday. plenty of clouds. peeks of sunshine developing this afternoon.

started in deerfield in december 2. derek kelley took off, dragging an officer. in the truck was 29-year-old michael hilber of rochester. the pair is believed to be involved in two armed robberies in florida. michael hilber committed another armed robbery. the pair fled into the woods. hilber allegedly threatened officers. he was shot and killed. derek kelley was taken into custody. sean: a nashua man was taken into custody -- to the hospital after being hit by a car in hudson. police say the new hampshire spca have removed three dozen animals from a property in sandown as part of a suspected animal cruelty case. officials say they are all recovering from prolonged neglect.

>> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now, wmur news 9 daybreak. sean: so, here' s the deal. it is christmas eve. it does not feel like it. we have record-setting temperatures on the way. first, let' s get to our top stories. one new hampshire man is dead and another is behind bars following a police chase in florida. the men were wanted. the american civil liberties union has filed a lawsuit against the state department of corrections after it banned inmates from receiving greeting cards and handmade drawings. henniker police are investigating a deadly crash. we will have more on those stories in a moment.

josh: right now, it is so warm out there at this moment. normally, we would be dealing with slick roadways. but it is well above freezing right now. the rain that fell heavily overnight is just creating wet roadways and that is it. gradually improving the sky conditions and the temperatures from the south pushing in and turning 40' s into 50' s and 60' s for today. we will see a spot or two that could maybe hit 70 or get very close to it. the highest we have ever gotten in the history of concord is 57. sean: we will shatter that. the record. sean: chance of a white [laughter] sean: let' s check out the roads.

they had gone on a crime spree that started in new hampshire. ray brewer joins us live in deerfield. ray: good morning. it all ended with a massive manhunt in central florida that involved police, helicopters, and bloodhounds. when it was all done, when new hampshire man had been shot and killed and the other was in custody. on december 2, deerfield police pulled over a truck driven by derek kelley of strafford with 29-year-old michael hilber of rochester writing in the front seat -- riding in the front seat. an officer tried to arrest them on outstanding warrants. deerfield police filed charges against kelley for dragging the officer with the car. the men fled to florida and continued committing crimes. >> i need to report a robbery.

ray: the hernando county sheriff' s office says hilber rob a dollar general store at gunpoint. customers went after the pair and called 911. >> he is following the people. ray: one of the customers blocked the entrance to the highway and try to pull the keys out of the truck' s ignition. kelley drove off, dragging the man before he let go. a wooded area. hilber allegedly threatened police with a weapon and was shot and killed. derek kelley kept running, prompting a massive manhunt. >> i went home and told my daughter and her husband and they got the guns out and we locked all the doors and turned on all the lights outside. ray: after a 24-hour search,

>> he was tired from hiding and being on the run. ray: police believe the men also played a role in an armed robbery at a subway in sarasota, florida. >> armed robbery seems like he stepped it up. whether or not they had the firearms in the vehicle when they ran from us, we are not sure. ray: derek kelley is currently being held without bond on a charge of robbery with a weapon. reporting live, ray brewer. sean: thanks. the aclu of new hampshire is suing the state department of corrections over it ban on inmates receiving greeting cards and handmade drawings. they say it violates constitutional rights and hurts inmates and their families. some of the cards were being used to smuggle drugs into the prison.

trying to keep contraband out is a major priority on a daily basis. whatever methods we can use, we will take those steps. >> inmates and family members communicate. not only is that a first amendment right, but it is good for rehabilitation. sean: the aclu filed a lawsuit on behalf of an inmate who filed -- received a card from his son that had drawings. a derry woman is facing charges after she crashed her check -- truck into a porch. police say 27-year-old lindsey simon hit a fence, went down an embankment, and then slammed into a deck. firefighters say the house did sustained structural damage. the people inside the home were not hurt.

charges, including dwi. henniker police say speed and the use of an electronic device may have been factors in a deadly crash on route 114. a car crossed the centerline and slammed head-on into the truck. the driver of the car was ejected and pronounced dead at the hospital. police in vermont say a man from swanzey led them on a chase into new hampshire. police followed the pickup truck and pursued it into claremont. joseph romano would not stop, even after spike strips flattened one of his tires. he faces charges in both states. a franklin woman accused of setting her former home on fire has been indicted by a grand jury. amber cowan is charged with arson in connection with this fire that was intentionally set back in september.

notice just before the fire. a neighbor says he saw her walking tour the house with a gas can. a man convicted in the stabbing death of a madbury teen has been sentenced to life in prison without parole. 19-year-old tristan wolusky was found guilty of murdering 18-year-old aaron wilkinson in june 2014. during his sentencing, he denied he committed the crime. this defense team contends that two other men are the real killers. wilkinson' s father said the family welcomes the end of this part of the process. >> happy it is over with and moving forward -- we talked a little bit about the appeal process, so that is on the horizon. hopefully, we can put this behind us and move forward. sean: the defense team says there will be an appeal filed within 30 days. tristan wolusky was also ordered

during the overnight hours. we are way above average right now. imagine what it will be like a little bit later on today when the temperatures are up in the 50' s and the 60' s. there is a look at your visibility around the region. there are some areas of lower visibility because of some fog. if you are going to be out driving around, let me give you a good look at that' s a you can see. the visibility is lower at the seacoast. some of the valleys, a little bit of fog. keep that in mind as you drive around. concord, the average high for today, 34 degrees. already, we are at 47. it is 44 in concord right now. normally, temperatures like this would be way above average.

and shatter it by at least 9-10 degrees in concord. that is giving you an idea of what is to come. all of the heavy rain falling away through maine and up into the canadian maritimes. left over, clouds, fog, maybe some drizzle, still the chance of a leftover shower later today. for the most part, the general trend will be to gradually scour the sky from the clouds and we will see them thin a little bit and we will see brakes of sunshine developing -- breaks of sunshine developing. the temperature will be going crazy. the cooler weather over the weekend and into next week pulls in and there is a chance for some snow next week. let' s take futurecast and show you. you can still see a passing sprinkle or shower. late morning into early
