motorcycle into the woods. 56-year-old kevin meany was thrown from his motorcycle. police are still on the scene but the road has been reopen to traffic. good evening and thanks for joining us, i'm stephanie woods. we will update you as more information becomes available. winter weather is coming to new hampshire. a storm system will bring the first measurable amount of snow early next week. a.j. burnett is tracking the winter storm. a.j.: the storm that's coming in tonight a weak one is not going cause a whole lot of snow across the area. it's next week when we get hit by some plowable snow. we have freezing rain advisories in areas of conway and littleton and winter weather advisories

less layers than they used to. after a record-setting warm christmas, mild temperatures continued on sad making for an unusual start to the ice skating season at puddle duck pond in portsmouth. >> last season has been incredibly cold. mike: the weather has attracted dozens but it's not all good news. on christmas eve they had to close because ice turned to slush. >> when it was really, really warm it was basically like a swimming pool. the refrigeration system couldn't keep up with it. mike: downtown there was a chill in the air but not enough to ruin a walk. >> we were just discussing we're going on a cruise in february. maybe we won't have to because this is great. mike: further north skis are making snow but not enough this

>> the weather has been an fecking snow making but we've jumped on every opportunity. >> all things considered we've got about 32% of our terrain open right now. over 100 acres and almost eight miles. terrain for all abilities which is really important this time of year because a lot of kids are here learning how to ski. >> there's a feeling that old man winter is almost here and for some he's welcomed. >> i am hoping that it gets colder like significantly colder. i'm not sure if that will happen. but it will make my job a lot easier. mike: and the colder temperatures on the way are expected to give ski areas the boost their looking for. mark crow nan -- cronin wmur news 9. stephanie: up thically the road to washington closes in late october and only the stage coaches stay open but because

this is the first time in 35 years the road will be open. but the road will close tomorrow when wintery weather moves in. two separate car crashes closed traffic in manchester. two cars crashed before 5:00 shutting down the intersection of maple street and seely road. both victims are expected to be ok. both the sedans were damaged. police say they closed the intersection. some of the people involved were take on the the hospital. it's not clear what caused the crash. state police clocked a driver going nearly double the speed limit in benton. 52-year-old peter mezzelli was driving 108 in a 55 zone before they pulled him over on route 25. the trooper says he smelled marijuana in the car and he admitted to having the drug and the device.

charged with reckless driving and released on bail. route 106 in concord is back open after a wreck shutdown the road for man than an hour and a half. three people were injured and one person was taken to concord hospital. officers have not said what caused the crash. dairy fire department said a car struck the gas like. the valve was sheered off. it took cruise more than an hour to stop the valve from leaking. thankfully nobody was hurry. custody. when officers arrived they found broken windows at the mall. it's not clear if the juveniles are facing any charges. one person is in the hospital

car crashed into a horse-drawn carriage in waterville, maine. six people were treated and released from the hospital. the driver probably didn't see the carriage until it was too late because of sun glare. the hayride was part of the elks lodge christmas event. >> a man is facing charges after a knife attack. 44 ammon britch is accused of stabbing three family members. his cousin's husband, his 39-year-old daughter and his 18-year-old zpwrooned were take on the the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. >> kids got hundreds of toys from a correctional facility. they made 475 patients at the children's hospital in darton

which is big enough for kids to go inside. the director says his inmate have been creating wooden toys for the toys for tots programs for four years. it was a dream come true for a maine girl battling cancer. after posting her wish on social media, she got to meet tom brady at ji let stadium. the meeting coming before the jets game. >> just to hear him say her name was the most exciting name we had heard in a very long time. christmas gift she'll never forget. she was really good this year after all. she's been brave and strong as she fights b-cell leukemia for the seb -- the second time. her best gift wasn't under the true. it was under her commuter.

christmas gift that you wanted this year and i got one too. >> it was christmas morning all over again today. haley and her parents left her home at 5:00 and drove to gillette where they got a special tour and meeting with tom brady. >> what did you think when he said your name? >> haley swears she's never going to wash that part of her head where he gave her a kiss. and he gave her a hat. >> when he has that beanie on what do you say? >> yay! >> after a truly magical christmas at home and in foxborough haley has to return to her other home at the hospital this week. the generosity of tom brady and the patriots towards his family was a priceless gift they'll never forget. >> it was -- i don't know who was more excited her or me. but you know, to see my daughter get her wish was -- is something that i'll forever be grateful

>> i asked haley's dad how they are going to beat this christmas and he didn't have to think long. he said that their best christmas ever is going to be when haley is healthy at home and the second cancer fight is behind them. in foxborough, julie mcdonald, wmur news 9. stephanie: family and friends who was killed in the crash remembered him tonight. hundreds of people were at the dover arena for the first ever riley leavitt hockey game. it was featuring alumni from saint thomas aquinas. leavitt died after crashing into a car in barrington. he was a beloved member of the community on and off the ice. >> terrific, terrific kid, a real pillar of the community, give you the shirt off his back to anybody. always willing to help. it was a tremendous loss for the community and the family obviously.

they've been receiving from this has been just fantastic, absolutely fantastic. >> more than $50,000 was raised. scholarships. >> coming up at 11:00. firefighters are battling a fast california. what started the massive wildfire. and right now severe weather sweeping across the south. tornados and flooding have claimed at least 17 lives. how people are trying to clean up the damage. >> and that same system is heading this way for tuesday. but we have another system on top of us right now with some light rain and freezing rain. we'll talk about that and next week's storm after the break. >> and santa is water skiing in patriots lake in littleton. definitely not what you would expect to see in december in new hampshire.

president obama and michelle obama paid a visit to the marine corps base in hawaii. the president commended their hard work. he also spoke at the six u.s. troops that were killed on monday calling them brave and outstanding. today the president returned to the marine corps base for a round of golf. a down power line is being blamed for sparking a massive wild fire. the fire started friday night and spread rapidly covering over 1,200 acres. hundreds of firefighters closed highways and evacuated kneeby homes. highways have reopened in some spots. the possibility of strong winds could change all that. >> we will not leave until we know that every last ember has been ex-ting wished.

three day fighting the blaze. across the country at least 17 people were killed in severe weather this holiday weekend. today many are cleaning up from tornados and other storms. chuck shows us what areas of the south have been hit the hardest. chuck: tonight, a tornado strike in the dallas area. five people reported killed as police search and rescue. in alabama the day after christmas the saddest eye view shows the aftermath of a holiday that will be hard to forget. >> we was in the house having a good time. laughing and joking about memories about families through the years.

suddenly a time for survival. torrential rains caused flooding across alabama and and the currents sent this boat down stream. a major winter storm is about to strike the central u.s. with the greatest threat of severe weather over parts of texas. by monday morning expect ice and freezing rain to cause travel trouble. for now some storm victims are clinging to the christmas spirit. >> maybe this is the beginning of something better. >> chuck severeson abc news, new york. >> however here in new hampshire, we've avoided severe weather this week. sailboats can be seen earlier today taking advantage of the warm weather. 14-year-old gus whitcom organized the regatavement a

we're finding from plymouth over toward conway some light mixed precipitation. so take it slow on the roadways. we look off to the west and it's mostly sporadic showers but there is a batch of steadier rain out through western new york and pennsylvania. this moves in after midnight and will be dealing with it first thing tomorrow morning as whelm let's take you through time. we're talking about heading through the midnight hour. showers becoming a bit steadier. up towards the mid far reaches of the state. this will be mixing with snow and freezing rain and sleep. rain. the rain will wind down a bit as we head toward late morning tomorrow, still dealing with some light rain and freezing precipitation and on to northern new hampshire and into maine into the afternoon hours before it winds down. skies start to clear out but not

tomorrow is a cloudy damp day. how much snow are we talking? far northern new hampshire one to three inches at most. most everybody else seems rain. there could be a sloppy coating. the highest ams will be on up toward maine. here's where the stormy weather is tonight. you can see the transition zone and up towards cleveland where it's 56 degrees. 40 in the windy city of chicago. more importantly down here this is where some nasty weather is ongoing. that's our storm system for tuesday. and here it is looking at tuesday at midnight. so going into the wee hours of tuesday morning by dawn we're talking about some snow this time as colder air will be in place and a lot more precipitation. snow around here. it could be sloppy in southern and central new hampshire as we progress through the day on

the winds will kick up as well. so yeah, we're talking about some disruption to travel. this will be around for the first thing on tuesday morning. so i would plan on some extra -- extra time to get to work tuesday morning. 23 to 37 degrees tonight. i know that's quite the temperature range. so let's take you through it. 23 in berland and 23 in conway, 40 degrees in nashua and salem. for tomorrow we're up in the middle to upper 40's in the upper half of the state. upper 30's in berland for example. and your five days goes like this. it's really tuesday when the bulk of this nasty weather gets here. so let's talk about how much we're talking about for tuesday. looks like we'll be needing the shovel at the very least maybe the snowmobile in a couple of cases but definitely the snow blower. four to eight implings of snow is -- inches of snow is possible
