hampshire primary. >> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now wmur "news 9 daybreak." sean: good morning, everybody. thanks for waking up with us. i'm sean mcdonald on this monday of school vacation week. for the first time in a long time, we're talking about snow. significant snow in the forecast. kevin: it may not be all snow. it could be sleet. we start off with mostly cloudy skies across the area. a few flurries up in the mountains. winter storm watch is posted for the northern third of the state starting overnight tonight. for southern areas, we have winter weather advisories. they start overnight tonight as well and will continue through the day tomorrow. there's a look at it. flurries up north. partial sunshine ahead of the next system. it starts as snow and tries to transition over

we're looking at high temperatures in the upper 20's to mid 30's. the snow winning out. the full timeline and accumulation amount possibilities in just a bit. let's look at your monday morning ride with deb davidson. good morning monday. deb: good monday morning. if you are heading out for travel, all major roads are looking well and up to speed. we're not seeing any problems on 93 north or south from north of the notch down to salem. 293 is also a good ride through the mill yard. we still have the lane shifts in place between exit five and the everett turnpike and the exit four onramp does remain closed. detours are in place. heading in to massachusetts has been trouble free and moving well. this report has been brought to you by peter's honda, nissan, and kia of nashua.

95.7 wzid. sean: deb, thanks. we start with breaking news from claremont. a car has crashed in to a house on maple avenue. we don't have any detail, including if anybody was hurt. we know it happened around 3:00 this morning. we have a crew headed to the scene right now. live updates as soon as we have more information. the storm that is headed our way has already caused serious problems in other parts of the country. tornadoes killed 11 people in texas over the weekend. 13 died in flooding across the midwest. hundreds of homes have been damaged or destroyed. even though the snow hasn't arrived here in new hampshire, the weather is having effects. this is a live look at the departure board in manchester. several of the first flights out have been canceled. a few arrivals have been canceled as well. megan hughes is tracking the severe weather.

twisters launched across the landscape. the twister that hit garland, texas was an ef4. alive and safe. replaced. reporter: flooding in missouri led to several deaths. in oklahoma, west texas, and new mexico, snow created whiteout conditions on the roads. >> just last week it was 60 degrees in roswell. today everything is covered in snow. reporter: trucks out of control rest in the snow bank. more than 20 motorist were stranded on i-40 between amarillo and the new mexico border. the national guard was destroyed to help people stranded. all of this weather impacted air travel too. more than 1,000 flights were canceled, more than 4,000 delayed.

living hell. reporter: the storm system is on the move. there's a winter warning in chicago. it is expected to make a huge mess in the northeast tomorrow. sean: back here at home, dover police are looking for a woman who haven't been seen for wednesday, two days before christmas. 28-year-old jennifer santos didn't come home and missed several things that had been planned with family and friends around christmas. she's 5'6". brown hair, and brown eyes. she was last seen driving the gold merced mercedese-class sedan. if you have any information, call police. a farmington man is accused of leading police on a high-speed chase. they tried to stop christopher archambault but he took off. he faces several charges, including

property and reckless conduct. a 21-year-old woman is recovering from minor injuries after she was struck by a van. the woman was in a crosswalk with a walk signal when she was hit yesterday afternoon. the driver has not been charged. turning to politics. christmas is behind us. six weeks left until the the campaign trail is going to pick up again. donald trump and john kasich are in the granite state today. jeb bush and hillary this week. we can expect to see candidates lake bush, kasich, and christie here a lot. they have staked the campaigns on strong showings in new hampshire. donald trump always grabs headlines and attention. she's focusing more on social media than pounding the pavement. >> maybe he will engage

in january, you start to get the big rallies. candidates want to show they have momentum. >> we have a lot of undecided people in new hampshire. it's donald trump's to lose. sean: cruz, rubio, and christie are republicans to keep an eye on. they say it is hillary clinton's race to lose. they will start sending out the medical marijuana patient cards. today the department of health and human services has approved 40 patients so far. no dispensaries are opiate. that's expected to change within the next few months. the cards allow qualifying patients or their cave givers to legally buy up to two ounces of marijuana from dispensaries in new hampshire. the chipotle restaurant is back open this morning. 140 people, mostly college students, got sick after eating at the

sean: a massive wild fire in australia destroyed 116 homes along the coast there. firefighters say it could take weeks to contain the flames. some residents are being escorted back in order to look at the damage. evacuation orders remain in place. more hot/dry weather is in the forecast for this week. in south america, the problem is too much water. 100,000 people in paraguay have been forced to leave their homes. argentina is dealing with the worst flooding there in more than 50 years. the government is promising to help them rebuild their homes. and unprecedented flooding in northern england. york, leeds, and manchester is in danger.

reached record highs. more. that's overwhelming new flood protection systems years. china has officially end its long-standing policy of only allowing people to have one child. lawmakers passed a law yesterday to let couples have two children. the one-child policy has been in place in the 1970's. officials say they decided to overturn the rule because china's population is aging. birds are becoming a serious problem for helicopters. according to the faa, there are more than 200 helicopter bird strikes in 2013. up more than 700% in a decade. part of the season is pilots are simply reporting strikes more. officials say there are more large birds in north america. for instance, there are nearly eight times as many canada geese now than there were in 1980.

afternoon before more clouds build in later this evening ahead of this system. we have winter weather advisories posted for a good part of the state. winter storm watches posted for coos as well county. it will be another system arriving early tomorrow morning. temperatures starting north. we're just above the freezing mark. not much of a move upward today. any sort of developing sunshine counteracted by the north and northeasterly flow which winds are picking up hour. temperatures. low to mid 20's up north. with that. starts to lighten later this afternoon and then the clouds start to increase and thicken later on this evening. from there, we're going temperatures overnight tonight to drop back in north. we'll be in the 20's in southern areas. it will be cold enough it would be in the form of snow initially.

startling to push in after 2:00 a.m. and overspreading through 5:00 or 6:00. snowfall will be heaviest and centered around the morning commute. watch the pink shade here indicating some sleet. which starts to become more of a factor as we get beyond 8:00 or 9:00 in south western areas. for southern and central areas, late morning and early afternoon. all the while, the snow continues up north. we're expecting higher amounts there. it could end as rain or sleet. up north it likely ends as snow maybe mixing with sleet right at the end of it. it should wrap up later tomorrow afternoon. then we are left with mostly cloudy skies to partial sunshine on wednesday. once that moves by, fairly quiet weather behind it. we go through the end of the week without much else. as far as accumulations. we're going to see the change over to a wintry mix. what is three to six inches of accumulation getting matted down quite a bit by any sort

slammed in to several trees. the first snowstorm of the system is heading our way. it is expected to hit new hampshire early tomorrow morning. we're talking about legitimate amounts of snow to shovel. kevin: i'm imagining all of the sleds that are sitting under christmas trees. get them ready. it has been a long time in waiting. eventually we are going to see some snow. it looks like it developing overnight tonight from southwest to northeast. starting to snow everywhere. as we get mid to late morning tomorrow, a switch over to sleet or freezing rain in places. i think the heaviest of the snowfall will be focused around the middle of the morning commute tomorrow. temperatures today will be chilly with the breeze out of the north and northeast. sean: we'll continue to watch that. let's check out the roads. a much easier ride. here's a live look at i-93. kevin: for a look at the morning drive, we're joined live by deb davidson. deb: good morning, kevin and sean. 93 is moving well.

no reports of any injuries. we're still waiting with details. we're also following a developing story out of lynn, massachusetts this morning. police are searching for the driver who slammed in to a local cafe there. the accident reportedly started with a traffic stop following a report of a stolen vehicle. the driver took off on foot. the suv kept going crashing through the wall of the walnut street cafe. no one was hurt. the same storm system that's heading our way is causing major problems in other states. the governor of new mexico declared a state of emergency after the storm dumped up to 21 inches in some areas. snow drifts as high as ten feet are making many roads impassable there. one interstate was shut down from albuquerque to the texas state line. the governor's emergency order activated the guard to help stranded drivers. in new hampshire, many people are preparing for the snow including local

pushed back. nathaniel kibby's trial is scheduled for june 20th. it was originally slated for march. he is accused of kidnapping a teenager and holding her captive for nine months. he faces more than 200 charges. the charges carry penalties that could send kibby to prison for life if he is convicted. berlin police are asking for your help in tracking down an armed robber. it happened shortly after 6:30 on saturday night. a man walked in armed with a gun and demanded cash. the suspect took off getting money. he was last seen walking south on riverside driver. anyone with information is asked to call berlin police. ! the university of new hampshire is stepping up its efforts to prevent suicide. they are using a $100,000 three-year grant to expand the online training system. it lets faculty, staff,

state police is running the accident investigation. they got the call around 3:00 this morning. a small compact, appears to be perhaps a nissan, in to the house. it did not appear to breakthrough the actual house. one of the state police officers here on scene told me two people inside the car were transaction ported to the hospital. both were alive at the time. he's not clear on their condition. investigators are candid in saying they are trying to figure out what happened. they asked us for some patients. we are at the corner of maple and buena vista. for a good couple of blocks is closed off. accident reconstruction crews are on scene. we'll try to get information. we'll bring it to you as soon as we have it. amy coveno, wmur news 9. sean: thanks. a massive storm system to the south is blamed for killing two dozen

in texas a series of tornadoes left behind a major path of destruction. you can see some video of that. as andrew spencer reports, people are trying to clean up and hold themselves together. >> yeah. >> see that one over there? reporter: only when lightning flashed in the darkness could people see a tornado. you can see the damage after one of the tornadoes hit this house ripped it in the air. traumatic. we came out to assess our own. for help. >> we realized he was running across the road with his baby. reporter: his neighborhood begged her the hospital. she did while the husband tried to get the wife out of what home. >> she was pinned in there between a wall and the door. reporter: she survived.

a tornado destroyed an elementary school in red oak. just a few blocks away, willard jordan and his family coward inside a closet. >> that sound. i can't get the sound of my head. to hear the wood, buildings cracking, ripping stuff up. all we could do was run to the closet and play. reporter: around the dallas area, the damage is from light to devastating. eight of the deaths happened in garland which was hit by an ef4 tornado. donations of warm clothes and food people coming in all over the area. >> i have no heat, no electricity. >> it is not exactly cozy, but she's just with her. >> as long as they are safe, i'm happy with that. regardless of where i'm at. reporter: a sentiment many of the storm survivors can appreciate it. >> that can always be fixed. we'll thankful that everybody is alive.

spencer, wmur news 9. sean: chicago mayor, rahm emanuel, is calling on the police department to review crisis training in the wake of a double-fatal police shooting. they shot and killed a 19-year-old man while responding in the which the teen was threatened his father with a bat. as the shots were being fired, the 55-year-old neighbor was accidently hit and killed. loved ones say the neighbor was opening the door for police when she got caught in the line of fire. they are now demanding answers. >> why you got to shoot first and ask questions later. >> she should not have to come outside, open the door, and be shot down by a police officer. sean: chicago police have not explained why they opened fire. the officers are on desk duty while the shooting is being investigated. authorities say a man plummeted to his death while using a camera or cell phone on the edge of a cliff.

she was hysterical and crying and pretty joyous. sean: pretty joy us to get it back. crews also recovered photo albums. it was started by a flammable liquid that got too close to a burning candle. turning now to sports, the patriots game against the jets went to overtime yesterday. before the ot, there was a coin flip which they won. under orders from the coach, the pats elected to kick the football away rather than receive. that's the big story coming out. this was game number 15 of the season for tom brady and the gang. they were up when tom brady passed to james white, tieing the game 20-20. the pats won the overtime coin flip. coach belichick elected to kick. after the game they said it was the coach's orders. the jets had a chance to win with a touchdown. eric decker caught the

the red sox went on to win to advance to the world series. check out this incredible video out of japan. a giant squid was spotted in shallow waters on christmas eve. normally these creatures are found only in the deep ocean. the diver who shot the video estimated the squid was about 13 feet long. of course the stories get bigger and bigger. things look bigger under water. kevin: yet another reason never to go in the ocean. sean: giant squid are friendly, i'm sure. kevin: yeah. unless they determine you are lunch. that's kind of the issue there, don't you think? there's no bargaining. sean: they would ink and run if they saw you. kevin: look ahead. it is a blend of sunshine and clouds. cold day with temperatures in the 20's to mid 30's. these numbers are closer to where we should be. as of right now we're running over 11 degrees above normal for the

afternoon. one of us has a lot of slow moving through the afternoon. you'll notice as we go back farther to the west some much colder air eventually building in. you'll notice this huge dividing line between temperatures in the 30's and temperatures in the 70's. that's where we find the area of low pressure. high temperatures today are going to be within a few degrees of the freezing mark. quite a few more clouds around this morning. especially in the north country. giving way to partial sunshine. only to see more clouds move in later tonight as the next system comes in. we're looking at 2:00 a.m. for south western areas. by "daybreak" up in the north country, it will be heavy at a time for right around the morning commute tomorrow. then we should start to see it switch over to a little bit of sleet or freezing rain by mid to late morning and going across southern parts of the state and ending ape cumulation. up north likely mostly

sean: take a look at this adorable animal. i'm not talking about kevin here. the koala was rescued from the massive brush fires in australia. they are still battling the fires. emergency crews are trying to rescue more wildlife trapped in the path of the flame. you don't think about that. you think about the homes and structures. a lot of animals are fleeing the fires. that's one of them. a man got a surprise when he stepped off of his plane yesterday morning.
