daybreak." sean: it is monday of vacation week. good morning. i'm sean mcdonald. more out of the breaking news in just a moment. first everybody talking about the weather. we're expecting for tomorrow snowfall and considerable amounts. >> it is a huge change. the colder air continues to rush in this morning gusting over 25 miles an hour. winter storm watches posted for the northern third of the state and winter weather advisories elsewhere starting during the overnight hours tonight and continuing through the day tomorrow. for now still some lingering light snow, flurries out there this morning, not associated with the next system which starts to arrive after midnight tonight in south western areas. not much of a move upward today. we'll get in the lower 20's up north. mid 30's for southern spots with the breeze and more clouds filing in. we'll have the latest timeline coming up. let's look at your morning ride here. we're joined live by deb davidson. good morning, deb.

should take advantage of the nice clear roads before the mess comes in tomorrow. we aren't seeing hardly any traffic at all at this time. if you are heading out, it is a nice easy ride. we're seeing some slow traffic on 95 south at the 101 merge and getting off of the 101 west ramp. be alert. if you are heading in to massachusetts, all is clear as well. this report is brought to you by honda's nissan and kia of nashua. sean: we start with the breaking news from claremont. a car has crashed in to a house on maple avenue. the scene remains very active right now. let's get out to amy coveno who is live near the scene with what we know. good morning, amy. amy: we don't know a lot. things are changing here. we're on maple avenue at

the road is closed. we're told it was going to open up any time. the tow truck is on the way. the call came out about 3:00 in the morning. you can see the video of the car in to the house. it didn't breakthrough the house. it is right there on the front steps. it looks tick a late model compact car. two people were inside the vehicle. they were transported to the hospital. no word as to their condition. when we arrived, state police were candid in saying they were still trying to figure out what was going on here, how the car ended up in the situation. talk about a rude wakeup call. every light in the house is on. although we have not been able to get on to the property to talk to the residents to see what they experienced. the road here due to minutes. a tow truck on the way away. we're still waiting on state police to fill us unfolded. that's still the latest. back to you.

the storm that is headed our way has already caused serious problems in other parts of the country. tornadoes killed 11 people in texas over the weekend. 13 died in flooding across the midwest. hundreds of homes have been damaged or destroyed. even on the snow hasn't arrived, the weather is already having effects. look at the live look at the arrival board. several flights will not be landing, canceled, as you can see. megan hughes is tracking the weather. reporter: twisters landscape. the twister that hit garland was an ef4. the survivors count themselves lucky. >> i'm lucky we're arrive and safe. all of this can be reporter: in mississippi, flooding like this led to several deaths and led the governor to declare a state of emergency

in oklahoma, west texas, and new mexico snow created whiteout conditions. >> just last week it was 60 degrees in roswell. today everything is covered in snow. reporter: trucks out of control rest. more than 20 motorist were stranded. in western oklahoma the national guard has been destroyed to help people stranded. all of the weather impacted air travel too. more than 1,000 flights were canceled. more than 4,000 delayed. >> the storm system is on the move. there's a winter storm warning in chicago. it is expected to make a northeast tomorrow. megan hughes, abc news, washington. sean: we'll be tracking that throughout the day. dover police is looking for a woman that hasn't been seen since wednesday, two days before christmas. 28-year-old jennifer santos didn't come home and missed several things planned around

she's 5'6" with brown hair and brown eyes. she was last seen driving the 2001 gold mercedese-class sedan. a farmington man is accused of leading police in maine on a high speed chase. they tried to stop christopher archambault. she took off topping more than 85 miles on back roads. he faces several charges receiving stolen property and reckless conduct. the 21-year-old woman is recovering from what appears to be minor injuries after she was struck by a van. police say the woman was in a crosswalk with a walk signal when she was hit on south main street yesterday. the driver has not been charged. turning now to politics. christmas behind us. six weeks left, the

to pick up again. republicans donald trump and john kasich are both in the granite state today. jeb bush and hillary clinton will visit later this week. we and expect to see candidates like christie and bush here because they have staked their campaigns on strong showings in new hampshire. donald trump is focusing more on social media than pounding the pavement. >> there's some speculation he will politics. what often happens in january is the big rally. candidates want to show they have momentum. >> we have a lot of undecided voters. it is donald trump's to lose at this point. sean: they say that christie and kasich are important republicans to keep an eye on, on the democrat side they say it is hillary clinton's race to lose. they will start sending out the first new hampshire medical marijuana patient cards today.

40 patients so far. no dispensaries are opiate. that's expect to change within the next few months. the cards allow qualifying patients or their designated caregivers to legally buy up to two ounces of marijuana from dispensaries in new hampshire. the chip chip possibility lay restaurant blamed for an outbreak is open again. they blame a sick worker. the entire store has been scrubbed and disinfected. they will also now face extra inspections at chipotle. >> my staff will go out and do spot checks. they are scheduled for inspections every three months. we'll do this for six months to a year. sean: the commissioner says he's confident it is safe and clean, he plans to eat there today for

morning. all of the details and how many to expect with the first widespread snowfall of the season coming up. sean: the number of children in the u.s. can asthma has fallen slightly. according to a new government study this morning, about 8.3% of american kids under the age of 18 have asthma. after peaking at 9.3% just five years ago. most of the declines in recent years are in children younger than five. numbers are rising down south and among teenagers. farmers in many parts of the country are facing a potentially serious problem. there aren't enough bees to go around. the wild bee population has fallen by a quarter since 2008, especially in places like california, pacific northwest, plains, and west texas. that's putting more strain on crops and honey bee colonies. the presidential task force is working on ways to help boos the bee population.

some residents are being escorted back to what used to be their homes in order to look at damage. evacuation orders remain in place. more hot/dry weather is week. in south america, water. nearly 100,000 people in paraguay have been homes because of flooding. many others are trapped by the high water and unavailable to leave. northern argentina is weather in more than 50 years. the government is promising to help residents rebuild their homes. hundreds of troops have been deployed in northern england to help deal with flooding there. thousands of homes and businesses are in danger. several rivers have reached record highs. some by three feet or more. that's overwhelming. systems installed in recent years. china has officially ended its long standing policy of allowing people to have one child.

to let couples from two children. the one-child policy had been in place since the 1970's, though it will been eased in recent years. they decided to overturn the rule because china's population is aging. a credit union in quincy, massachusetts is restricting debit card and atm activity because of suspicious activity. several people at quincy credit union say their accounts have been drained or hundreds of dollars withdrawn or charged without their knowledge. it is unclear how many accounts have been compromised. they have been working non-stop to fix the problem. officials in the european union are trying to make water more affordable for travelers. you can't take more than 100 milliliters of liquid in security. prices are sometimes

hour or two. beyond that we're looking at a blend of sunshine and clouds today. even some breaks in the overcast up north. a pretty brisk wind this morning. certainly making its presence felt. winds gusting over 20 to 25 miles an hour initially. we'll start to lighten through the afternoon ahead of the system. winter weather advisory posted even winter storm watches ahead of the system as it tries to ride in early tomorrow morning starting in south western areas first. the last of the snow shower activity this morning still going up through higher elevations. temperatures have slipped back in to the teens this morning. notice the minus six on top of mt. washington. that indicates some very cold air in the mid levels of the atmosphere. as the wind continues through the day, it mixes down. it doesn't allow temperatures to jump all that much in to the afternoon. we have the gusts early this morning at times over 25-20 miles an hour. temperatures this afternoon lower 20's up north.

just above the freezing temperatures just aren't moving all that much. with the wind, it is going to feel colder than that through the afternoon. tonight more clouds build in. we're looking at light snow to develop after 1:00 or 2:00 a.m. then overspreading the area from there by 5:00 or 6:00 tomorrow heaviest centered around the morning commute. looks like it will be snow at this juncture. temperatures continue to rise. they try to change over the snow and end any sort of accumulation for state. as a mixture of some sleet, snow, or freezing as rain. up north, it continues as snow there. a little bit more in the way of the snowfall accumulation before wrapping up tomorrow night. mostly cloudy sky on wednesday. small chance of a shower around in the afternoon. relatively quiet going forward. this isn't the beginning of a stormy pattern. looks like it is a one off.

for the end of the week. a general four to eight inches after accumulation. there will be lesser amounts where the mixing occurs earlier. up north where you are not expected to see much until the things wraps up, five to ten inches. the toughest of the travel will be centered around the morning commute before wrapping up thereafter. the chance of a passing rain shower on wednesday. partial sunshine thereafter which includes thursday and a fairly mild evening for your new year's eve. we're talking temperatures generally in the 30's dipping in to the 20's by the time we get to midnight thursday night. from there, we're talking cooler conditions by the time we get toward friday. you can notice the temperatures continue to slip back. any snow we get there's a pretty good chance a lot of that stays around on the ground. there will be some melting going on. you have to bear in mind the four to eight is before any sort of a change over. for southern areas, the three to six could be matted down by any sort

model sports car that there. it doesn't look like it had any major impact. quite a wakeup call. car. we'll have the latest throughout the show. we're following a developing story out of morning. right now police are searching for the driver who slammed in to a cafe. the accident reportedly started with a traffic stop following a report of a stolen vehicle. the driver took off on foot. the suv kept going and crashing through the wall of the walnut street cafe. no one was hurt. the same storm system that's heading our way is causing major problems in other states. the governor of new mexico declared the state of emergency after the storm dumped up to 21 inches of snow. snow drifts as high as ten feet are making many roads impassable. one interstate was shut down to the texas state line. they activated the

several trees. two kids were able crawl out of the wreckage. the driver, 64-year-old frederick temple, of newport, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. a movement to bring tens of thousands of libertarians to new hampshire has almost reached its goal. for years, the free state project has been trying to get $20,000 libertarians to move to new hampshire. 18,000 people have pledged to come here. the move. our growth rate is accelerating faster. for the first time we can really reach a new audience. we've been doing advertising. that's been working out great. sean: in february it will hold its liberty forum. the speaker will be edward snowden, the contractor who revealed information about surveillance programs.

review crisis training. they shot and killed a 19-year-old man early saturday morning while responding to a domestic disturbance in which a teen was threatening his father with a bat. as the shots were being fired, the 55-year-old neighbor was hit and killed. the neighbor was opening the door when she got caught in the line of fire. they are now damaging answers. >> why you got to shoot first and ask questions later? >> she should not have to come outside, open the door, and be shot down by a police officer. reporter: chicago police have not explained why responding officers opened fire. the officers are on desk duty while the shooting is investigated. sean: authorities in california say a man plummeted to his death using a camera or cell phone on the edge of a cliff. the 33-year-old fell 40 feet. witnesses reported seeing him looking at an electronic device before he fell. the mother said her son

>> i heard the guy that fell yelling help. please god save me. my mom ran out and then someone yelled at her and pointed at her can you please call 911. sean: bystanders climbed down the cliff to perform cpr on the victim. he died at the scene. an irreplaceable item was recovered from the rubble of a fire in massachusetts. the fire destroyed a multi-family house in boston. everyone did make it out safely. yesterday salvage crews discovered an american flag that one of the residents was presented with after her father's funeral. he was a veteran. >> it was in a closet that had some water and smoke damage. the fire didn't touch it. he was historical and crying and laugh laugh laugh -- pretty joyous. sean: crews also recovered photo albums. the fire was started by a flammable liquid that

turning now to sports, the patriots game against the jets went to overtime yet. before the ot, there was a coin flip which the patriots won. the pats elected to kick the football away rather than receive. that's the big story coming out of this one. that was game number 15 of the season. late in the game the jets were up by seven when tom brady passed to james white for the touchdown. the pats won the overtime coin flip. coach belichick elected to kick. after the game, it was the coaches orders. the jets had a chance to win with a touchdown and eric decker caught this touchdown pass right here. runs right in to the crowd there. the jets went on to win 26-20 in overtime. they can clench with a win next weekend. >> why did you elect to kick on the coin toss at the time? >> we thought that was

we start off with the showers. a pretty good breeze out of the north. that gusting at times you'll notice to the south and west the next storm system starts to make its way in to south western areas. for the here and now, the clouds continue to decrease this morning. it will be a blend of sunshine and clouds as the next system clouds try to work in later on this afternoon. some scattered snow showers up north. temperatures this morning in the upper teens and parts of the north country and seven up in pittsburgh. we're in the lower half of the 30's right now in southern areas of the state. not much of a move upward. there will be a lot of areas that may go up a couple of degrees. you have to bear in mind with the wind out there early this morning gusting at times over 20 miles an hour, it is going to feel chillier than these readings. eventually the wind starting to lighten as a weak area of high pressure sits in control of the weather through early this evening. then more clouds start to thicken up tonight.

the teens up north and likely back in the low to mid 20's, snow showers giving way. central and southern areas back and forth between sunshine and clouds in the low to mid 30's. here come the clouds. we have winter weather advisory posted for central and southern areas starting overnight tonight and winter storm watches for coos, grafton, and carroll which will go over to an advisory or warning. you'll notice the snow continues to advance in anywhere after 2:00 a.m. in south eastern areas of the state. by 5:00 or 6:00 a.m. up north. some of this could be locally heavy. then you'll notice the transition. milder air in the mid levels of the at nos peer. a change over to sleet. for central and southern areas by lunchtime. up north, it continues to snow. that's why we're thinking just more in the north country out of the system than in southern areas of the state. it wraps up by mid

sean: time right now is 6:54. we continue to follow breaking news in claremont where a car crashed in to a house. let's check in with amy coveno. amy: good morning, sean. that happened around about 3:00 this morning. the new information is maple avenue is back open. you are looking at wreckage in front of 67 maple avenue. a late model compact went in to a house. state police are leading the investigation. they were candid saying they weren't clear what exactly happened. two people were inside the vehicle. we're told they were both alive when they were transported to the hospital. no word as to their condition at this point. sean: a serious crash in alexandria is also under investigation. two kids crawled to safety after the truck they were riding in went off of the route 104 and slammed in to several trees. the driver, 64-year-old frederick temple, was
