s been a day with all day long meaning that when things switched overdue contact and it has been formed a thin layer of ice and will continue to do so overnight. let' s look at the snow totals, londonderry with four inches. inches. a report from plymouth with six inches there, 5.5 in brentwood and madison and three inches in hudson. the winter storm warning is in effect a little bit longer in northern new hampshire, maine, and vermont. you can see the snow is still falling in the northern part of the state from the white mountains northward and that will continue through the evening and overnight hours. in southern new hampshire at first glance you think nothing is happening here but the drizzle is not showing up.

temperatures are in the 20. a chance of a few areas of freezing drizzle and mixed snow to the north. haley is out live in salem. are you still having freezing drizzle or missed? haley: it is superfine at this point but the roadways and untreated areas are extremely slippery this evening, so be careful of that. you get a glaze on the windshield wipers in areas where they are not treated so be careful of that this evening. we have a fresh coating of snow across the area and on top we have this crusty surface once the sleep started to fall which

that we started to pick that up. that has compacted some of the snow totals in a lot of communities in southern new hampshire. coming up i will explain why some of us saw fleet and how it forms up in the higher part of the atmosphere. i will be back in a few minutes with more on that. jean: the brigade of plows has been out since early this morning trying to keep the roads safe. it was a slow go this morning and the cold temperatures aren' t helping the conditions tonight. the speed limit on the state' s highways has been 45 miles an hour all day. although that has now been lifted in parts of southern new hampshire. wmur' s adam sexton is live in salem with an update on the conditions. adam: they have lifted that limit but as you can see the traffic out here is still going pretty slow and there is a reason why. this is an access road for this park and right.

underneath the snow. they have done two or three but once you get beneath all this note there is just a hard layer of ice and that is what drivers are watching out for. morning commute was much worse than this drive home. a lot of slick roads out there this morning and people wondering what is going on in terms of treatment of the roads. this storm had a lot of water content in the snow and ice falling on top of it so it was hard to keep up with. the drivers we talked to were still talking about this morning when we talked to them. there weren' i' m on the road at 4:30 in the morning so it was really sloppy. adam: the concern heading into the evening and overnight is re-freeze. because there is so much water in this, you had freezing rain

a lot of eyes out there and mixed in with the snow underneath. tom: the first storm of the season brought a mix of snow, sleet and rain to the coast. accumulations there were slightly less than other areas of the state, but still made for a messy commute. jennifer crompton joins us from portsmouth' s market square with how that part of the state has fared. jennifer: it is definitely cold here and snowy. portsmouth has about three inches and now has snow banks dotting the area that will likely be here for months to con. first responders here, and further inland say this storm was rather uneventful but it started out with a bang. there were several reports of vehicles slipping and sliding as the commute started. rochester saw 4 to six inches,

this morning. responding to several things at once but by mid-afternoon there cities like dover and somersworth even with schools closed, not many people there outside at all, perhaps hunkering down, to enjoy it, rather than fight it. >> this winter has been wonderful. green christmas, sad for the kids, but happy for us. and most adults, mother nature and here we are. >> the cleanup continues. force today and continuing portsmouth. of things to come.

tom: just weeks before the new hampshire primary, george pataki is calling his supporters here oval office. polls. also the weather forced his town hall event in peterborough tonight. jean: but it didn' t slow down john kasich and hillary clinton. she is traveling to berlin where she is holding a town hall tonight. she answered questions ranging from the addiction crisis in new hampshire to equal pay for women and gun control. she called on gun owners to make changes. >> it is really time for gun owners to form a different organization that will do more

responsibility and stand up for the safety of our children and our communities. >> we are covering tonight' s townhall in berlin and we will have more tonight at 10:00 and 11:00. tom: meanwhile ohio governor john kasich continued a two day trip through new hampshire with a town hall in nashua despite the weather, the republican drew a good size crowd to the event. as he has throughout the race, kasch pointed to a record of economic success as governor and as the architect of a balanced national budget while in congress. the 63-year-old says while he understands frustration with the big money in politics, he isnt selling anything. >> the special interests don' t matter to me. i mean they can have an opinion. i want to respect you rich people. i respect them but they dont tell me what to do. people give me money, god bless them. but your hiring me as a ceo. you hire me as a ceo, my job is to go fix problems.

but there continues to be concern about re-freeze. new details about a wrong way crash that seriously injured a driver. jean: police say the man was under the influence and driving a stolen van when he caused an accident in manchester and then took off. an officer chased him down and after a fight took him into custody. police say the stolen van was also involved in a hit and run earlier in the day on mast road. tom: josh judge is back with a look at the forecast tonight.

josh: navigating around the state was not easy today for different reasons at different times. snow came down heavily at times this morning and then started mixing with sleet and freezing rain and that added ice to the snow on top of it. here is a look at more snow have -- snow totals. somersworth with six inches, greenland almost five inches,

5.5 in brentwood, madison about five inches, and you can see the temperatures still below freezing, meaning the roads could continue, especially the secondary roads and driveways and things like that, be cautious out there and be careful of the low visibility. thick fog in some locations. downtown manchester, 2.5 miles of visibility and some areas less than that. you could have trouble driving out there so use a little extra caution. the good news is that the winds have been calm out there so far today and that should continue. we had so much for writing a precipitation, the snow, sleet, and freezing rain and the question everybody wants to know

back-and-forth, sometimes you get sleet or freezing rain when the temperature is still below 32. hayley lapoint is out in salem right now to provide some answers for us. haley: you have to imagine the atmosphere is having lots of different layers. it' s not just what we experience down here, it is all the way up into the sky. this was the big difference today, even at the surface temperatures were well below freezing. s. warmer. as the rain or snow is falling out of the clouds, it sometimes will melt a little bit and then re-freeze on its way down as we get closer to the ground where it is colder. in other instances we have cold air all the way through that that' s why we would have snow

up and down from the clouds to the ground. today a lot of us had warmer air in the upper part of the atmosphere and that' s why we had issues with mixing going on. back here live in salem you can see what the result was at this mixing. huge clumps of eyes ice. that' s the latest from salem. back to you, josh. josh: there is still snow falling in the northern part of the state. southern new hampshire, it has seemingly ended with there is still missed and freezing drizzle that could cause. off to the west is a bit of a break so tomorrow things will be much drier. mixed rain or snow showers or freezing rain and snow showers possible through the evening hours.

jamie the bruins have been on a : roller coaster lately, up and down. 3 straight wins and then their current 3 game losing streak. they try to turn it around at home against the ottawa senators the sens beat the bruins 3-1 on here we go, unh hockey fans the home and home series we have been waiting all year for. tonight, the wildcats play umaine in portland and then tomorrow night, they go again at the verizon wireless arena. they have already played twice this year a friday night tie at maine, on a night where unh was low on numbers do to injuries. unh won in durham the next night. >> they really came after us the first game.
