like we do. now, wmur news 9. josh: we begin tonight with breaking news in goffstown. crews are fighting to contain a house fire on black brook road. trucks from several towns are battling these flames. good evening, i' m josh mcelveen. jean: i' m jean mackin. this fire was reported just over an hour ago. wmur' s adam sexton is live at the scene with the latest. reporter: this is now a three alarm response. multiple towns responding. it is a rural area, which means there are no fire hydrants and water has been a concern. flames were able to spread extensively. we were able to show you video from earlier at 3:30 this afternoon.

this home at 561 black brook is a large home. it is 3200 square feet. visually, we can tell you it has a lot of eves. flames have spread extensively through the structure. some of the firefighters we talked to expect to be here long into the night. in the last 30 minutes, we spoke to chief richard o' brien. he says no one was home at the time of the fire. no injuries. that is a positive. but the home appears to be a total loss. we will give you updates as they become available and more later on at 6:00. adam sexton, wmur news 9. josh: the man suspected of causing a crash that injured several secret service agents did not have a valid driver' s license. that driver did not survive. tonight, we' re learning more about the moments leading up to the crash itself. wmur' s jennifer crompton is live at the wakefield police

reporter: bruce dansforth died at the scene. his passengers, a girlfriend and family friend, were hospitalized. as for the four secret service agents, a spokesperson tells us that three have been treated and released from the hospital. one remains hospitalized in serious condition with non-life-threatening injuries. their names will not be released in this case. police confirmed that danforth was driving northbound on route 16 last night when his mercury sable hit the taurus sedan the agents working in head-on. his license has been suspended. police are looking for witnesses to help in the investigation. >> the preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle driven by

pass a northbound vehicle. that vehicle did obviously not stop. that is why i am reaching out to the public to convey our request. if you are in that vehicle, please contact new hampshire state police. reporter: i spoke with bruce danforth' s daughter tiffany, who set up a gofundme page. the family is traumatized by this. he was a father to five and a grandfather to seven. coming up, what hillary clinton' s campaign is saying about the crash. for now, jennifer crompton, wmur news 9. josh: another person is dead after a crash on i-93. at 2:00 this afternoon, the driver lost control and crossed the median into northbound lanes and hit a vehicle.

expect traffic in that area. jean: we could be in for another slippery night thanks to the little while. time. video from i-93 in hooksett. let' s check in with josh judge. josh j.: we have seen freezing drizzle for a lot of the day, below 32. even just a little drizzle is all it takes to start icing things. freezing rain advisory in effect until 1:00 a.m. in central new hampshire, 3:00 in southern locations. there is snow in central parts of the state right now and sleet as well as. southern new hampshire, not as much. this southern system will join forces with another system over the great lakes.

possibility for the next few hours. a little bit heavier in passing showers overnight. ice accumulation of up to a few hundredths of an inch could occur. temperatures remain below 32 degrees. here is a look at your lows for the overnight with showers off and on. we will talk about your new year' s eve forecast in a few minutes. josh: bill cosby has been charged with indecent assault in the case of a woman who said he drugged and a salted her. the woman, who has agreed to have her name published, says the assault happened in cosby' s home. abc' s marci gonzalez is in pennsylvania, where cosby was arraigned today. reporter: the arraignment only lasted a few minutes, and cosby did not enter a plea. >> god bless you. reporter: bill cosby walking into court today.

reporter: arraigned on three charges, including indecent assault, allegations from 12 years ago from a woman in pennsylvania, re-examined by police, leading to his arrest today. this coming a month before the statute of limitations expired on the allegations made by andrea constant, who claims cosby sexually assaulted her in 2004 in his pennsylvania mansion. >> mr. cosby urged her to take pills and drink wine. the effect of which rendered her unable to move or respond to his advances. reporter: when constand made accusations, prosecutors decided there was not enough evidence to pursue the case. she later settled in civil court.

released deposition led them to reopen criminal investigations, cosby admitting he had given qualudes to women. cosby has been accused of drugging and assaulting dozens of women over decades. this is the first time he has been criminally charged. cosby is being held on $1 million bond. he is scheduled back in court in about two weeks and could face a decade in prison if convicted. martha gonzales, pennsylvania. josh: another woman has filed a defamation lawsuit, saying cosby falsely accused her of lying when she made the allegations. jean: speaking publicly for the first time, a plaistow man convicted of beating his girlfriend' s 3-year-old son says he would never harm a child.

of judges to reduce his sentence. as heather hamel tells us, his attorney says he was only an accomplice. reporter: his attorney is asking for a shorter sentence of five to 10 years saying it was unclear if dow or his girlfriend fueled the abuse. >> james is petrified on a daily basis that mr. dow will escape. talking about her nephew. at three years old, he was the victim of physical abuse at the hands of roland dow, serving 67 years in prison for the assault. dow is asking for the sentence to be reduced. >> i would never harm a child. i did not assault james. i think i should be sentenced lighter. reporter: his attorney asked for

is no way to tell if dow was convicted as a perpetrator or an accomplice, working with the boy' s mother, jessica linscott. >> what is the defendant entitled to? we say he is entitled to the benefit of the doubt. reporter: on that stand, linscott admitted to hitting her son, but says it was minor compared to dow. >> it was reckless and deliver it. reporter: to county attorney says a strong message needs to be sent that roland dow' s behavior is unacceptable, something his aunt echoed. >> this boy will be present -- imprisoned by his cruelty. reporter: the judge does not believe he can be rehabilitated. the sentence review board has

jean: but stern to the traffic watch and see how things are moving. it has been slick all day long. josh: peggy shows us a live look at the road midweek. reporter: another tough ride tonight and the freezing rain has not kicked in yet. 93 northbound has been busy. we had an earlier accident prior to 293 in manchester. it has been cleared, but backups continue to londonderry and windham. southbound, another accident prior to exit 2. that just cleared, but still seeing some backups. 93 north toward specific, pretty heavy, but no major issues. 93 in sugar hill was closed down northbound.

jean: more evacuations are underway in the midwest right now, as the number of people killed in historic floods continues to rise. several waterways could reach record levels, including the mississippi and missouri rivers. josh: these floods are threatening nearly two dozen levees in missouri and illinois. let' s go now to abc' s elizabeth hur in missouri. reporter: in st. louis, you cannot go far without running into one of these. walking trails are off-limits because the river is still rising. with first responders rushing to rescue the stranded stuck on rooms and cars, authorities in st. louis ordered mandatory evacuations this morning. residents near the merrimack river have been preparing for the worst but hoping for the best.

are lowest items are at four. reporter: the missouri and mississippi rivers are still rising. the rivers have already swallowed businesses and shut down highways and roadways throughout the state. the situation is so dire, the governor declared a state of emergency and ordered the national guard. >> a flood in the winter is dangerous. it is really cold. reporter: the rivers in missouri are expected to reach heights not seen since the floods of 1993. where we are, you can barely see the top of that fire hydrant. the only way you can tell there is supposed to be a road is because of the streets on. it is hard to believe. but the mississippi river has yet to crest. elizabeth hur, missouri.

s storms in texas could top $1 billion. that' s an early estimate from the state' s insurance council. texas has been hit hard in recent days by both tornadoes and wintry weather. waiting to see if they' ll receive a federal disaster declaration for the areas hit by deadly tornados. that would allow federal funding for cleanup efforts. >> we do not know where to go from here. we really need some help because we lost everything. some lost more than i did. they have no rubble. jean: in mississippi, at least 11 people died and 200 homes were destroyed. fema investigators toured the area yesterday. when their report is complete, the governor can request the disaster declaration. though the cold has arrived, it does not mean the ice is safe to walk on. josh: a man fell through the ice trying to retrieve a drone that

it is likely to stay there for a good portion of the overnight. freezing rain, snow. a little bit of everything in many spots. because of that, freezing rain is likely in southern and central new hampshire. a freezing rain advisory in effect until 3:00. it could settle down at times. we have had that off and on through a portion of the day. the treated roads are mostly ok. occasionally, it overwhelms them and you can have problems. keep that in mind as well. not much showing up on radar. we have some snow showers in parts of central and northern new hampshire. a lot of this will change over to freezing rain overnight. northern new hampshire, most likely seeing snow. it is this system that is moving up the east coast that we will watch as it combines with another system over the great lakes.

josh: those charges against richard penney were dismissed last fall. since then, prosecutors have held him on a separate stalking case. jean: suzanne explains where the case is moving forward. reporter: richard penney was originally arrested in january of 2013. he had stolen his brothers gun, threatened him, and healthy woman hostage. after a long standoff, he was arrested and charged but deemed incompetent to stand trial. the original charges against richard penney were dismissed this october because of a state law that says if someone is not found competent in 12 months, charges need to be thrown out. prosecutors then charged him with stalking for allegedly calling his brother while in jail in violation of bail conditions. the judge agreed today to dismiss the case. >> i told him he could call me through my sister.

reporter: today, the prosecutor refiled original charges, asking that penney be held on $5,000 bail. >> i do not know how to feel. nothing has changed. i do not understand how they can refile charges. reporter: since the original charges were dismissed without prejudice, state law allows someone to be retried if a person is found competent. the judge ordered that penney be held on $25,000 bail. >> the fact that he remained crime free is admirable. whitey bolger was crying free while on the run. does that make him less dangerous? reporter: his brother says he just needs help. >> i do not think he will get the help he needs in jail.

reporter: the probable cause hearing has been scheduled for january 6. suzanne roantree, wmur. jean: a manchester man has been charged with resisting arrest, after a standoff in hooksett last night. police say brandon griffin assaulted his girlfriend at the firebird motel. when officers arrived, he refused to come out of the room and police were told that he might be armed. it took several hours for police to convince him to surrender. josh: chicago plans to provide more tasers for its police officers. in the next few months, it says every officer who responds to a service call will have a taser, and will get special training for the stun guns. that decision comes amid growing criticism of chicago police and their use of force. the u.s. justice department is investigating the department. the texas teenager who fled to

a deadly crash will not be deported today. a mexican court has approved a three-day delay. ethan couch and his mother were arrested earlier this week. couch is on juvenile probation for causing a deadly crash in 2013. he was drunk behind the wheel. defense attorneys claimed couch suffers from affluenza, because didn' t know right from wrong. police and military members lined new york city streets today, for the funeral of a fallen service member who also worked as an nypd detective. technical sergeant joseph lemm was killed in afghanistan last week when a suicide bomber attacked bagram air base. he' s one of five americans killed in the attack. jean: the war on terror is on the mind of new hampshire filmmaker ken burns. he' s been chosen as the grand marshal for the new year' s day rose parade. it' s held in pasadena, very near san bernardino, where 14 people were killed in a recent terror but burns says he' s not worried

revelers will go through two screenings with handheld metal detectors. jean: in boston, it is the first year that first night celebrations are not being run by the city. an outside company is producing the event. and it is free this year so you do not have to buy a button. festivities will be scaled back and police have to -- a tight security net in place. josh: similar plans are underway in other cities, like las vegas, where they are expecting hundreds of thousands of people on the strip. earlier this month, a driver there intentionally drove into the crowds, killing one person. tomorrow night, the strip will be closed to vehicles. police officers have been using the recently-closed riviera casino and hotel to train for any problems. more than a thousand officers will be on duty tomorrow. jean: here in new hampshire, one new year' s eve tradition has

after 20 years, wolfeboro will not hold a first night celebration. wolfeboro' s chamber of commerce says it wants to focus on all the events that happen in town during the year and not one specific event like first night. wolfeboro will still have fireworks. they start at 6:30 tomorrow at the town docks. josh: wolfeboro still rocks. jean: there are lots of other celebrations planned around new hampshire, especially at ski areas. josh: wmur' s paula tracy looks at some of the biggest events in tonight' s escape outside. reporter: a christmas wish came true this week -- a blanket of snow and cold temperatures to welcome holiday crowds. timing could not be better for places that have planned new year' s celebrations. henniker expects hundreds of people to ski until 10:00. their indoor celebration will include live music and a

they are, maybe go up a few degrees. here is visibility. particularly in the merrimack valley, you will notice there are lower areas of visibility' s. if you are out and about, not only do you have to worry about slippery roads, you' ll be in and out of fog banks. speaking of slippery roads, freezing rain advisory in effect overnight until about 3:00 this morning. if you are going to be out, keep that in mind. not in effect for northern new hampshire because any precipitation is expected to remain as snow. central new hampshire will likely change over as warmer air moves in to freezing rain. slippery conditions and snow showers. northern new hampshire, you could pick up an inch or two overnight.

hundredths of an inch. enough to make things slippery. we are watching this system along the east coast that moves in overnight as it combines forces with a system over the great lakes. there you go. voila. at times, slippery going during the nighttime hours. after 10:00, you could start seeing the mixed showers picking up a little bit. pulling away tomorrow morning. if you are up early, there could be left over showers with clouds parting in the afternoon in time for the new year' s eve festivities. partly cloudy skies tomorrow evening with snow showers in the mountains. not bad for new year' s day. temperatures, notice they are in the 20' s and a lot of spots in the overnight hours. you could have just plain rain in western new hampshire that spreads eastward as temperatures attempt to rise a little bit.
