like we do. now wmur "news 9 daybreak." erin: good morning, new hampshire. happy new year. welcome to 2016. we got to get used to saying that. we're joined now by hayley with the latest on our weather forecast. so the weather was pretty nice for anyone taking in the events. hayley: it has been so mild. we've made it past december. test was the warmest month ever on record. which is crazy. yeah. it was incredibly warm. obviously as with went forward here. a week ago temperatures in the 60's on christmas day. here's a live look in colebrook. it is 31. you can still see some spots where it might be icy. a lot of us have fallen. heads up there as usual this time of the year. any melting that we had yesterday could have refrozen overnight. be careful. 33 in lebanon.

37 in manchester. 36 in nashua. we will have a few snow today. mainly in the higher elevations up north. otherwise a pretty good looking day with a mix of sun and clouds. snow showers moving across the northern areas with minimal accumulation. temperatures in the 30's up north today. and southern new hampshire. more in the forecast coming up in a few erin: all right. thank you. the calendar flipped over to 2016. in time for the new year, gas prices are rolling back. the average price has dipped below $2 for the first time since 2009. that's a penny lower than the national average. kristen carosa joinses inman chester with more on the celebration for drivers. reporter: gas prices have been dropping for most of 2015, saving people a lot of money at the pump. look behind me. the average is below $2

in some places particularly in the southern part of the state, you can fill up for a lot less. at $1.99 that's 43 cents less than we were paying a year ago. we haven't seen prices this low since the recession in 2009. the oil price information says a driver buying 11 gallons a gas spent $53 less than 2015 than the year before. put that together and you can find a lot of smiles at gas stations these day. >> it is great. happy new year. get out and drive. >> i think that's awesome. >> i'll be able to put more gas in my car, for sure. reporter: good news if you are traveling, aaa says that 71% of gas stations are selling for more than $2 a gallon. there's more good news. gas prices are expected to stick around and the low rates in 2016.

around the world 2016 got a warm and safe welcome from sydney harbor to moscow. in dubai, a massive hotel fire lit up the sky three hours. >> i can see a lot of debris. reporter: in mention of arson or terror. terror threats caused two stations to evacuated in germany. in paris, no fireworks display. the same in brussels. they stopped a plot in rochester, new york. a man was planning to attack people at a restaurant in the race of isis. security is expected to be high at another new new year's tradition. >> don't do something illegal. chances are you will be standing by an undercover officer. reporter: they stopped by officials even before the san bernardino attack.

line the route and don't see deterred. >> we've been at 48 consecutive parades. really fun. we enjoy it every year. it is always something new and repressuring and beautiful. reporter: pasadena police are partnering with the fbi and homeland security for the parade today. abc news, washington. erin: police say they've cracked a string of recent robberies. they believe these two men pulled off robberies in manchester and a third in goffstown in the span of two days. according to documents, devin milliard admitted to taking part in the goffstown robbery, just to get high. police say both men were caught on camera robbing a pair of gas stations in the queen city. officers say the weather helped them make the arrests. >> we were able to obtain some shoe impression from the snow that had fallen. we were able to cast at least one of those. they were able to match

the suspect's shoes. erin: both men face charges in manchester. charges are pending against monica. police in salem arrested a man they had been running from -- they say had been running from police more than a year. 23-year-old joshua chevez was wanted in connection with a deadly shooting in 2014 in lawrence. police in lebanon are looking for a white believed to be involved in a hit and run. a woman reported hearing a crash and seeing a white truck that hit a parked car and mailboxes. officers did find a ford emblem at scene. significant damage to truck. with the calendar flipping over to 2016, there's a few new laws.

school bus face a $500 fine. the fine for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle is going up from $100 to $150. fines for speeding in a 75 mile per hour zone will increase up to $400. welcome home to another group of heros. 20 members of the third baa tollon 179 field artillery regiment are returning today. another 100 will arrive in manchester tomorrow. this is video from the couple of weeks ago when the first part returned. this deployment was the first time in the field artillery unit was activated in support of operation spartan shield. an airline pilot is being honored for uncommon generosity. this week's hometown hero is not ling

hayley: good morning, new hampshire. 11 minutes past 5:00. there's a live look in meredith. a quiet start to 2016. be careful of some slick spots. mix of sun and clouds. temperatures climbing in to the upper 30's close to 40. erin: a delta airlines pilot is earning high praise for a show of kindness. a family was traveling. one of the flights was late. their connecting plane pulled away moments before they arrived. the pilot happened to see them crying and yelling at the window, radioed the tower, and found out what was going on and decided to return

>> it is very rare someone stops and does something so kind. we need more people like them in the world. erin: the story has a happy ending. they did make it in time for the funeral. they say the pilot's gesture made all the difference. this week's hometown hero is a three-sport athlete for the falcons. amanda murray plays basketball, soccer, and lacrosse. she has won three state championships, two in soccer and one in basketball. she's kept her skills while managing type i diabetes. >> sometimes if my blood sugar is well i don't perform as high. same with when it is low. i have to monitor the water and insulin throughout the day. i think what makes me a good leader is positivity and encouragement on and off of the field and court that i really try to keep everybody positive and happy wanting to be

"murder, she wrote." a new york city police detective was laid to rest who was killed in afghanistan. a picture from the procession has gone viral. detective joseph lemm's 4-year-old son saluted his father's flag-draped casket as it passed by. many people have compared the picture to the image of. john: saluting jfk's basket. erin: free rides from uber could be a reality. they offered rides for free. they sold out. uber drivers have been trying to get the portsmouth city council to change part of the transportation ordinance to allow for the service. offering free rides skirts the ordinance and is a way to highlight their concerns. >> we're doing it this way because the transportation ordinance had made doing it any other way illegal. the same problems that uber has been facing.

for the past year. erin: the group is considering continuing the free service as they continue to press for changes in portsmouth transportation ordinance. wall street is probably happy that 2016 has arrived. 2015 was the worst year on the market since 2008. the dow jones and s&p 500 both end the the year down. the nasdaq did gain slightly. exciting news for movie fans. bob iger has confirmed they will make a fifth indiana jones movie. they got the rights to star wars and indiana jones. stephen spielberg has previously indicated it would star harrison ford, though neither have said they with part of the new production. it is wonderful to see harrison ford in the

let's see him in indiana jones as well. hayley: he's got to be. it will be good to see the movie come back. a lot of big fans of that franchise as well. december was so warm, wasn't it? erin: crazy. we have cooled things down a bit. hayley: yeah. much colder. here's what's happening this morning. a quiet, calm start to 2016. live look in sanbornton with the snow on the ground and clouds over head. in portsmouth, there are a few slick spots. especially after the refreeze happened. yesterday we got a little bit of sunshine midday. temperatures popped up see there. at least in laconia, concord, manchester, and that allowed some of us to really scrape off the ice off of the driveway, walkways, and get rest air that we had had recently. december was a month probably none of us will ever forget, especially christmas eve and christmas day. how warm it was.

concord. the big thing is too not only did we beat it by a fraction of a degree, but we beat it by a few degrees. the old record was set back in the 1800. this was incredible feat that we beat it and in a big way for the entire month of december in concord. here's where we stand now. 35 in concord. 37 in manchester. it is about 36 in portsmouth. 32 in rochester. as we go through the next couple of days though, there are going to be some big changes. today temperatures still above the average slightly. we'll reach the upper 30's, close to 40 degrees. then look at the big slide that we take through the weekend and then, boom, monday, tuesday of next week, full on arctic air with high temperatures only in the 20's. some of you up north may not even have temperatures during the day out of the teens. this is some cold stuff. look at what's going to happen today. we'll have lots of

there will be a few snow showers too. elevations. minimal accumulation. there will be a couple of passing snow showers as we go through the day. otherwise we'll feature a mix of sun and clouds in central and southern new hampshire through the day today. if you are heading up north to do some skiing today, there will be some snow showers around that may grease up the roadways again. be careful of that. overnight tonight we'll refreeze any melting that happens today. here's your saturday. mostly sunny. a few scattered snow showers in the higher elevations again tomorrow. it will be brighter tomorrow. and an even better ski and board day if you want to enjoy the sunshine. look at the temperatures a we get in to sunday. the ski area is rejoicing here with temperatures in the 20's as we push forward here. the other thing i want to point out on the seven day is look at low temperature. monday night in to tuesday morning, single digit reading there. that's for southern new hampshire. keep in mind up north we

on average, it takes three hundred americans working for a solid year, to make as much money as one top ceo. it's called the wage gap. and the republicans will make it worse by lowering taxes for those at the top and letting corporations write their own rules. hillary clinton will work to close the wage gap. equal pay for women to raise incomes for families, a higher minimum wage, lower taxes for the middle class. she gets the job done for us.

a year ago drivers in new hampshire paid $2.42 a gallon. it was $2.08 one month ago. new year's eve gas hit $1.99 in the granite state. and to put it in to perspective, the oil price information service saying a driver buying about 11 gallons of gas a week spent $550 in 2015 than the year before. >> i think that's awesome. i'll be able to put more gas in my car, for sure. >> it is good to be low. it is still not really low. i grew up with 99 cents a gallon. reporter: gas prices haven't fallen this low since the recession of 2009. saudi arabia and other opec members kept their pumps flowing even with low prices and stockpiles of crude. lucky for us, prices are expected to stay low in 2016. live in manchester,

news 9. erin: happy new year. thousands of people gathered to watch the big crystal ball drop in times square at midnight, ushering in 2016. confetti flew as people hugs and kissed and fireworks went off as some 6,000 police officers monitored the crowd to make sure the safe. while the new york celebration went off without a hitch, that was not the case in dubai where a fire broke out in a skyscraper just before thousands celebrated the new year. at least 14 people were injured in the 63 story hotel and apartment building fire. about 15 minutes before midnight. witnesses heard explosions inside the burning building. it is not clear what caused the blast or what started the fire. the firework display did go on as scheduled. back here at home, we celebrated the new year early at hampton beach. the fireworks went off at 8:00. thanks to the nice

even enjoyed surfing at hampton beam on the last day of 2015. claremont held its own new year's celebration. >> happy new year! erin: events kicked off around 6:00 p.m. with live music and magic shows. the community center was open for swimming and indoor laser tag as well. they set offfireworks at 10. all of the festivities were free. >> it was an exciting event. it is great to be a part of to be able to offer a free community event to the greater community of claremont. we're really excited. the budget has been great. people are excited. erin: sugar river rotary sponsored the event. they hope to host again next year. a man is facing charges in connection to a robbery in berlin. a man pointed a pistol at the store clerk and demand money. officers located the suspect inside his home

in berlin and arrested ryan morton on thursday. he's charged with arming robbery. he's scheduled to appear in court on monday. belmont police are searching for vandals who have caused more than $1,000 worth of damage using a bb gun. they have taken nine separate reports, including cracked windows in cars, residents, and local businesses in the past few weeks. while there aren't any leads on potential suspects so far, police are asking the public to keep an eye out for suspicious activity at night. >> if it is something that looks out of the ordinary, a slow-moving vehicle, strange noise, call the police and let us get involved to see what we can find. erin: it is unclear who is behind the mischief, due to the dischance, it is pretty clear they are driving around in a car. three dogs are arrive thanks to the quick work of firefighters in portsmouth.

was rivalling donald trump. today hawaii will raise the legal age to raise the cigarette age to 21. they are the first state to raise for the traditional and electric cigarettes. many people have also raised the smoking age to 21. tonya couch has been charged with hindering the apprehension of a felon. they sell bail at $1 billion and orders her bail can only be paid in testy. he's in custody of l.a. police. that's where she ended up after being deported from mexico. her son is on probation for killing people in 2013 while driving drunk. he and his mom fled to mexico after a video surfaced showed him violating the rules. several stretches in illinois are out of

probably topped off, of course, by christmas eve and christmas day. temperatures that were more like september. we were in the 60's for highs. here's where we'll be today for january 1st. only in the low 30's up north. closer to 40 in concord and manchester. you notice the temperatures not really going up much from where we are now. because of the clouds. it's been kind of gloomy around here. today at least we'll improvement with the sun clouds. that's already evident when you get just to the north of the concord area. some of the clouds beginning to break apart. the other thing is there will be some snow showers moving through. that tends to happen when we have colder air. it meeting up with the mountains, condenses, and you get snowfall. again in some of the higher elevations, there could be some light accumulations. across central and southern new hampshire it is going to be a day with a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures

degrees at least concord and southward. more like the upper 30's when you get up to the north. this is 7:00 a.m. on saturday. tomorrow morning starting out in the 20's. a few clouds and snow showers. still remain up north. tomorrow will be a brighter day across the state. temperatures will be a little bit cooler though with highs only in the 30's. take a look at the next couple of day here. we'll start out with new year's day today. about 40 degrees for the high temperature. we're starting out this morning with temperatures in the 30's with mostly cloudy skies. in the afternoon clouds and some sunshine. high temperatures again in the upper 30's close to 40. then over the weekend sunny saturday, on sunday a few scattered snow showers. then erin, look at those temperatures. highs only in the 20's. keep in mind that up north we're talking highs in the teens. over night look a that, five degrees on tuesday morning. it is going to be a frigid start.

air coming in. erin: it is going to feel colder because of the temperatures we're used to these days. hayley: i know we're thin blooded right now. we're nod used to it. erin: everything is bigger in texas. the huge rooster is evidence of that. 12-year-old dakota rogers tend to raise a chicken as part of the school project. after eight weeks, the birds were ready to be slaughtered. theirs could not stop eating. the rooster now weighs 24 pounds. >> his name is big mac. >> adult weighs usually weigh at the max 12 pounds. >> this one is a bit larger. the family named the chicken big mac. he hasn't broken any records, but he will serve as a prized meal for his family. still to come, some florida residents rang in the new year in an adorable way. the parade that has everyone's tail wagging.
