hampshire like we do. now, wmur news 9 at 5:00. adam: it is a busy sunday for number of republican and democratic presidential candidates making stops all over good evening, i' jean: and i' m jean mackin. democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton is back in new hampshire. she held her first town hall of the year in derry this afternoon. wmur' s kristen carosa joins us with highlights. kristen: hillary clinton held town halls this afternoon. her visit comes a day before former president bill clinton will hit the campaign trail in support of his wife' s run for the white house. took crowd of more than 700, secretary clinton talked about how she would fight for equal pay for women, something she says sets her apart from republican candidates. clinton also addressed issues she feels effect --affect new

by a young mother whose -- girl whose mother is dealing with substance abuse. through tears, she asked clinton how she could help. hillary clinton i want to make : sure we have more recovery and treatment programs, so that if someone knows that they need help and they decide that they want help, they can actually get help. kristen: clinton will be speaking at another town hall in keene at 6:00 tonight. at 6:00, we will have more from her visit in derry, including a confrontation between clinton representative. kristen carosa, wmur news 9. adam: thank you. her event was held this morning, senator bernie sanders held a roundtable on senior issues in these candidates are in a race to the finish and sanders about our chances. bernie sanders: in my view, you judge a country not by the number of millionaires and billionaires it produces. but by how it treats the most vulnerable people. adam: in londonderry sunday

morning, bernie sanders railed against attempts to trim the social safety net for seniors, slamming proposals to voucherize medicare. bernie sanders: and what are you going to get when you' re 90-years-old dealing with cancer or heart disease? not much. needless to say that' s a pretty dumb idea. adam: but first in the nation voters want to know, where does the money come from? >> you' re proposing major increases in spending for medicine, medicare, elderly people. my question is, how do we afford to pay for this? bernie sanders: the wealthy and powerful have managed to carve out enormous tax breaks for themselves in a lot respects, and capital gains is taxed at a substantially lower rate than earned income. and that makes no sense to me. a dollar is a dollar. adam: for some undecided democrats, electability remains an issue. >> i think he' s got a real shot to take new hampshire. i' m not sure how he' s going to play nationally.

adam: but in their candidate, the sanders faithful see a start -- stark contrast with hillary clinton. >> she seems kind of inauthentic to me. and i think with bernie, you see what you get. and he' s got a history of consistency. bernie sanders: i want to make this point for the umpteenth time. this is the richest country in the history of the world. millions of our people should not be living in poverty. adam: senator sanders finished the day with town halls. tomorrow he will hit the campaign trail again for events in laconia and manchester. jean: marco rubio held a patriots-dolphins watch party today in atkinson but wisely managed to leave before the end of the game. the florida senator is a big miami dolphins fan and usually doesn' t mind taking a ribbing at events here in patriots nation. but today, the fins pulled off a the victory. before the game, rubio told news 9 he thought his hometown team would lose and was looking ahead to next year. adam: i' m guessing you' re hoping that at some point in the future you' ll be inviting your team to

marco rubio absolutely. : i would love to be president and have the dolphins there as super bowl winners, but that' s probably not going to happen as long as tom brady' s in the nfl. jean: the senator is holding town halls in several towns tomorrow. fellow republican chris christie is also in new hampshire tonight. christie opened a new campaign office in salem this afternoon. you' re looking at live pictures. right now, the new jersey governor is speaking at a town hall event in merrimack. adam: more candidates will be heading into the state tomorrow with five weeks until the new hampshire primary. republican rand paul will make three stops tomorrow. the kentucky senator will visit two diners in dover in the morning and then attend a town hall in laconia tomorrow night. fellow republican chris christie will continue his four-day trip around the granite state. tomorrow, he will be in manchester and concord. former hp c.e.o. carly fiorina will make stops in salem and nashua. and florida senator marco rubio visit people in hooksett. and former president bill clinton will also be in new

hampshire tomorrow. clinton will be campaigning on behalf of his wife hillary. he will make stops in exeter and nashua. and you can find the latest political news by heading over to the politics page of our website, wmur.com. jean: it' s been a bright and sunny day for some of us in new hampshire. here' s a live look up in concord right now where it is 38 degrees. the coldest air yet this season will soon be moving in. let' s head over to meteorologist hayley lapoint. hayley: this is going to be brutal. not only will it be frigid tomorrow, but the winds will start to pick up. wind chills tomorrow will barely be above zero for much of the day. it will be a real shock to the system. we do have snow showers pushing through, mainly in the higher elevations. this is part of an arctic cold front sliding through. it will trigger scattered snow showers and flurries overnight. there could be a quick dusting mainly in the higher elevations. the rest of us, like stuff overnight. 39 in manchester.

33 and whitefield. we will be wishing for temperatures like those tomorrow and tuesday. tonight, we will fall into the 20' s by 9:00 or 10:00 with scattered snow showers and clouds after midnight. then the temperatures really start to cool down. tomorrow, we will only recover into the teens in my 20' s. i will show you the full. forecast in a couple of minutes. jean: one man died and a woman and child were hurt in a crash on interstate 89 in grantham last night. state police say their s.u.v. veered off 89 south into the median before hitting several trees around 7:30 last night. troopers say the man who was driving was pronounced dead at the scene. the woman was airlifted to dartmouth-hitchcock medical center with multiple injuries. the child suffered minor injuries. adam: the chairlift that a young boy fell off of at ragged mountain yesterday was cleared for normal operations this morning. mountain staff say the state determined there was no mechanical issue.

30 feet yesterday when his dad says he slipped. the boy has a concussion and some bruises but is expected to be ok. the site of the san bernardino shooting rampage that left 14 tomorrow. the inland regional center has been closed since december 2 when a husband and wife opened fire during a holiday party, killing 14 people and injuring 21 others. the suspects were later killed in a shootout with police. tomorrow as the center' s 600 employees return to work. jean: an overnight fire in connecticut left a toddler dead. fire crews were called to a bridgeport condo complex around 3:30 this morning. firefighters found the body of an 18-month-old girl in her crib. two other children and three adults were hospitalized for smoke inhalation. investigators say the smoke alarms were disconnected. the cause of the fire is still being investigated adam: a group of armed

militiamen protesting the prosecution of ranchers has vowed to stay indefinitely. reporter: a group of armed protesters have taken over a holding in a federal wildlife refuge in oregon. >> we have no intention of using force or being aggressive. but just as all people have the right to defend themselves, that is exactly what that means. reporter: a spokesman for the group, the son of the rancher known for his antigovernment action, told cnn they are over the land. >> it is the people' s facility, owned by the people. it has been provided for us to be able to come together and unite, making a hard stand against this overreach, this taking of the people'

reporter: the standoff reportedly started after protesters and militia members converged on the small town saturday to show support for dwight and stephen hammond, father and son ranchers jailed on an arson conviction in 2001. prosecutors say they set a fire that burned nearly 130 acres to cover up ho ching -- poaching. the father served three months and the sun one year. the judge ordered them back to prison. >> i' m going to jail for five years. it seems like a bit of overkill. reporter: they' re scheduled to begin their five-year prison sentence monday. jean: we are working on much more for 5:00. adam: will donald trump come out on top in new hampshire? coming up, what one g.o.p. insider says about the frontrunner' s chances.

adam: we are headed into current time for picking the next president. on the republican side, they still have more than a dozen candidates to sort through. thanks for joining us. you were with rick perry. that did not work out. two tours with john mccain and degrees in both primaries. we have to start donald trump to start. the idea of him having changed t know that until a future primary. this time around. >> i think you could call it more likely market crash, similar to 1987 and 2008. he has crashed this baby. it has thrown every candidate off their game. show. all the other candidates are now. it has been that way for six months.

we are going to see some unique weeks. we have seen chris christie. carly fiorina being endorsed by the new hampshire conservative leader of the last decade. that is a big deal. you have other candidates can hear. hampshire to get a ground game up and running. happening. but can we get donald trump off his game is the question. adam: there are a lot of different pieces to the puzzle. it seems a few of the establishment candidates have some but not all. which do you see perhaps putting it together to get into that one-on-one contention? answer. i still believe the two candidates who have had the best campaign, carly fiorina and will serve them well in the remaining weeks as they try and get a spot going to get

that is what carries you through an election, creating a buzz so everyone is talking about your candidacy. beyond donald trump, that is not happening. marco rubio is in the state today. if he spends more time in new hampshire, i think you could create a spark. john kasich created a spark over the summertime. he' s trying to get it back. i don' t know if he can do it nor do i know if the shifting of staff to new hampshire for jeb bush will work either. but i think that is a smart move. it is hard to tell which one of those can create something. ted cruz on his own i think will be a player because he has the conservative event vote to himself now. perhaps with a win and momentum. in 1996, an outsider won. that came and went. >> i think they are entirely separate. donald trump' s winning in south

carolina which holds a primary after new hampshire. he' s winning in florida beating marco rubio and jeb bush in their home state. this is the first time new hampshire has not had a serious challenge to its primary since 1992. it is a totally separate issue. we will be challenged now in 2020, but it has nothing to do with donald trump. adam: if you are advising bernie sanders, what you tell him to try to beat hillary clinton? >> she is going to be the nominee. there is little you can do about that. he will throw her off her game i think with a strong showing, possible victory in new hampshire. but she has it lined up after that. i would advise him to be as polite as he can down the road. adam: thank you for your time. always good to talk to you. you can get more straight talk at wmur.com/politics.

we have historical footage and interviews from more than two dozen previous campaigns. >> now, meteorologist hayley lapoint and your forecast. hayley: some of us got to have a bright and sunny sunday. the sun is going down. we have clear skies there. clouds have been stubborn in the northern reaches of the state. a look at portsmouth. a few clouds overhead. it has remained dry. cure is a look at the current temperatures. concord at 38. 38 in nashua. this is a little chilly. but the winds were not bad today so you did not have the wind chill to deal with. 36 in laconia. 35 in plymouth. 33 in whitefield. this is warm considering how the temperatures are going to be the next couple days. i want to show you some temperatures up to the north and west. this is where our air is going

looked in the northern reaches of quebec and ontario. brutally cold air. this is going to be coming our way the next 24 hours. recently, the jet stream with warmer air has been on top of us. tomorrow and overnight tonight, a cold front is going to sweep through. the jet stream will sink south of us. the gesturing is a fast-moving river of air that divides the cold and warm air across the region. the cold air is going to settle on top of us the next two days. it will be brutally called considering most of us are not used to the cold air considering how warm december was. we do have a few snow showers rolling through, especially in the higher elevations. the sunniest areas where we have clear skies from concord south and east up to the north and west, it was more of a cloudy day with the clouds stubborn. snow showers are mainly in the higher elevations.

some heavier snow showers may be between north conway toward berlin. be very careful in these areas. it could be slick this evening with snow showers moving through. there is an arctic cold front from quebec city down across the great lakes. across the area. it will trigger more snow showers through the night and allow the colder air to come through. much colder air. snow showers passing through. there may be a couple of them in central and southern new overnight. tomorrow morning, no more snow showers. we will have sunshine. up because of the cold air and strong northwesterly breeze that is going to kick up the cold air and bring it down toward us.

flurries at the seacoast or just inland tomorrow afternoon due to ocean effect snow showers forming. other than that, tomorrow is going to be a bright day and so will tuesday. it is just not going to warm up much. tonight, passing clouds, snow showers. cold in the single digits up north. high temperatures tomorrow in the lower teens in places like littleton. only in the 20' s in southern areas. subzero with wind chills in a lot of locations if not in the single digits. by tuesday morning, we are looking at some of the coldest temperatures this season. overnight, you see zero by tuesday morning. a quiet week, but cool. we warm up toward the end of the week. next weekend is our next chance for a storm. adam: a little cool. hayley: it will be brutal. jean: you heard it here.

jason: the patriots were in miami today trying to lock up the top seed in the afc for the sixth time since 2003, taking on the dolphins on the final sunday of the regular season. it was a slow first half for the pats and a scary one. tom brady hit from behind. brady was in obvious pain. he would limp to the sideline and have his ankle taped. there was a flag on the play but it was an offense a penalty, so no illegal hit. the good news is brady did return for the game. fourth quarter, how about this catch? somehow pulls it down for the 46-your game. he will cap the drive with a touchdown pass to jordan cameron. that broke the tie and the dolphins had a field goal. brady just 12 completions for 134 yards, no touchdown. dolphins win 20-10. pats now 12-4. they need denver to lose. they are on the field right now.

reporter: they did e-mail the couple with a list of zip codes with deliveries, even after reporters, managers, and staffers volunteered to take on the deliveries themselves. the company in a statement says it has a new distribution service which took over monday and is trying to get up to speed with a new staff of 600 carriers who need to learn new routes, new addresses. brookline is one of the areas where "the globe" today arrived. >> today we did get the paper. i' m not sure they can afford to be missing days of delivery. i' m sure people are switching to digital. >> you do get the feeling they would like you to go to an electronic form. reporter: when they did reach someone on the customer service line, the person offered to cancel their subscription. that is not what they want.

explain. reporter: the biggest names in daily fantasy sports facing a new, potentially crippling challenge. new york' s attorney general, eric schneiderman, going after draftkings and fanduel to give all the money they' ve made in new york state back to their customers. >> $35 on fanduel and won over $2,000,000. reporter: this lawsuit alleges ads showing people easily making big bucks are misleading, claiming nearly 90% of draftking players in 2013 and 2014 actually lost money. >> they originally deposited money with these companies based on doubling their money, which is what the advertisements promised. and he says that was a false promise. reporter: this is another part of a fierce legal fight. they filed suit in november trying to stop them from operating in new york, calling them illegal gambling operations.

but some of the stronger snow squalls in the higher elevations could pack a punch. you can get a quick dusting, maybe up to an inch or two. that is mainly in the higher elevations spots. tricky travel through conway toward berlin. maybe from franconia into little 10 might be slick on 93. here is the situation. you can see the clouds we have had in place. it was only the extreme southeastern corner of new hampshire that got to see the most sunshine today. then clouds and snow showers have been moving closer and closer. of snow showers. this is an arctic cold front swinging through. air. temperatures up to the north, probably what you would expect from "back and ontario --

northern quebec and ontario. we will get a taste of the cold air when the arctic cold front moves through. it will allow the cold air to move down out of canada. we are going to feel the effects of that tomorrow. tomorrow, not only do we have the air temperatures much colder than we have seen recently, even for a whole year. but we are also going to have the winds going out of the northwest. this is a look at future wind chills. 7:00 tomorrow morning, getting ready to head out, the kids will be standing in single degree feel-like temperature' s from concord down to nashua. it will feel like below zero in the northern part of the state because of the winds. look at the afternoon. still feeling like single-digit. tomorrow night with clear skies and light winds, it is going to get real chilly overnight tomorrow night.

here is what is going to happen. we will have scattered snow showers overnight tonight. minimal accumulation if anything at all. tomorrow morning, bright and sunny across the state. despite that, it is going to feel bitterly cold in a lot of spots. tomorrow, we may get a few ocean enhanced snow showers at the seacoast or inland toward manchester. it should not accumulate to anything more than a quick dusting. otherwise, partly sunny on tuesday, mostly sunny but still dealing with the cold. look at these temperatures tomorrow. a harsh reality. only 19 in stoddard. sunapee, 15 for the high temperature. nine in lincoln. these are the high temperatures. when you factor in the winds, it

reporter: these kids are patients at dartmouth-hitchcock medical center in lebanon. >> my son was diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukemia. reporter: scott is one of several youngsters taking part in a unique photography session thanks to something called flashes of hope. >> in the beginning of it, you don' t know if you are ever going to get another picture. reporter: it is a national nonprofit that invites families of sick children for portrait sessions, all free of charge. >> want me to sit with you? reporter: the idea, document in black and right -- white the strength and spirit of the children and their families as

>> for many, they are a sign of how far they have come. for others, they are the final photos they have with their children. reporter: she started the northern new england chapter in new hampshire in 2010. she was inspired by little riley who had pictures taken during her fight with illness. >> unfortunately, in april of 2011, she lost her battle to cancer. i always think of this as the chapter she built. reporter: that legacy carries on today. each year, several photo sessions are held at dartmouth

local photographers donate services to make it happen. most other days, she would be running kathryn morris photography in manchester. her day-to-day clients include infants like this little one or wedding parties. reporter: but several times a year, she packs up her studio equipment and volunteers for flashes of hope. >> i wanted to do this because i know the importance of photography, and i know how important it is to have a photo. reporter: years of photos show the transformation of a young woman battling illness. while many of these patients have obvious side effects of t. volunteers often have no idea who they will be working with. >> it could be they were just

could be they were just told they are cancer free. it can also be the last photo they have before they pass away. to me, it is so important to be able to give that to them. reporter: on this day, she was getting a blood transfusion. but she wanted to stop in to be photographed. reporter: her story is a similar one here. >> i have all, a type of leukemia. reporter: which her mother says has highlighted her strength. she wanted the photos to show the happiness in her child in a difficult time. >> we were introduced into this world unexpectedly. she has taken it on, the challenge.

picture taken in spite of not having the long hair she had all of her life, she donated a couple of weeks ago. she is an amazing child. reporter: we also met this four-year-old. in 2013, her family noticed she was fighting fevers which led to one of several doctors visits. >> she had lab work done. we left to go eat. then we found out she have the kenya. reporter: since then, she has been in and out of the hospital. some patients do this once, for her family has been several times showing a little person fighting back in a big way.

at shadow hill farm in maine, the owners say the sheep and alpacas love to eat the fresh trees. who would have guessed it? but the trees are a real treat for these animals. >> they love chewing on the greens. and then as it gets down to just the limbs, they' ll rub on those. it just gives them a treat when it' s wintertime and cold. jean: if you have a tree you would like to donate, you can contact shadow hill farm right on their facebook page. the first exhibit at the portland science center wrapped up today. adam: the portland science center opened in august. management estimates around 75,000 people have seen this exhibit, including 10,000 maine students. the body world' s exhibit is made up of specimens of real human bodies. in about three weeks, the center will be running two exhibits at the same time on space exploration and robots. jean: thanks so much for joining us for news 9 at 5:00. adam: we will be right back with
