are in the granite state today. bernie sanders, chris christie, hillary clinton, and marco rubio all hosted their first new hampshire town halls of 2016 , good evening. i' m jean mackin. with just five weeks until the first-in-the-nation primary, many candidates are revving up their campaigns to spend more time in new hampshire. senator bernie sanders was one of the candidates hosting town halls today. he held two in plaistow and newmarket. the democratic presidential hopeful also held a roundtable on senior issues. the event was in londonderry, traditionally a republican stronghold, but senator sanders drew a crowd and applause for his message of raising taxes on millionaires and billionaires. >> i want to make this point for the umpteenth time. the history of the world. millions should not be living in poverty. will be in laconia and

manchester. former secretary of state hillary clinton held three town halls across the state today. in derry, she talked about how she would fight for equal pay for women, something she says sets her apart from republican candidates. during the question-and-answer portion of the town hall, an emotional question was asked by a young girl who says her mother is dealing with substance abuse. she asked how clinton could help. >> i want to make sure we have more recovery and treatment programs so if someone knows they need help and they decide they want help, they can get help. jean: not everyone at the town hall was a supporter. catherine o' brien spoke without being called on, saying she was trying to ask clinton about her husband' s sexual impropriety years ago. >> you are very rude. i will not ever call on you. jean: tomorrow, bill clinton will make stops in new hampshire in support of his wife'

new jersey governor chris christie began his town hall in merrimack by calling out secretary clinton for not doing enough to fight isis. he called her " secretary happy talk." the republican presidential candidate also spoke against president obama' s plan to take executive action on gun control this week. >> you see, the president now is going to do something tomorrow by executive action about gun control. craziness. he knows he cannot get it through congress so he will do it by executive action as if he is king barack obama. jean: governor christie was in salem this afternoon. tomorrow, he will be in manchester and concord. marco rubio held a patriots-dolphins watch party today in atkinson but wisely managed to leave before the end of the game. the florida senator is a big miami dolphins fan, and usually doesn' t mind taking a ribbing at events in patriots nation.

mike huckabee and then -- ben carson are betting heavily on iowa. unh professor dante scalas says candidates that need a strong showing. >> that would include chris christie, jeb bush, john kasich. out of new hampshire. reporter: carly fiorina could be in the mix as well. while he thinks marco rubio may have more flexibility. >> marco rubio needs to show early states. that could be iowa, but here is a possibility. reporter: if new hampshire is a trump. >> if donald trump loses the iowa caucuses, all of a sudden, for him.

colder. 29 degrees in manchester. 30 in concord. s in whitefield. this is just the start. the state. it has a few snow showers in higher elevations. you can see the clouds over hampshire. those will clear away by tomorrow morning. but you will feel a difference when you step out. temperatures in the teens for kids at the bus stop. we only get into the 20' s. with the wind, it will feel like single digits. how long does the cold air last? i will show you the seven-day forecast coming up. jean: the chairlift that a nashua boy fell from at ragged mountain was cleared to operate this morning. he was taken to the hospital but is going to be o.k. wmur' s mike cronin spoke to his father today about those frightening moments on the chairlift.

he joins us live with his story. reporter: this has been a nightmare for the boys father. he is horrified he could not save his son from falling. he said the lift was never stopped. when he got to the top, he ran down the trail his son was on. doug prangley took this picture of his twin sons just minutes before the scare. >> i did what i could. i was horrified, to be honest. reporter: prangley says they had regular mountain saturday afternoon. they were trying to pull down cameron slipped. >> i tried to hang on as much as i could. but i could not get him up. i dropped him 30 feet. reporter: after three hospital concussion, cameron is expected to be ok. >> it was my fault. i let him go.

reporter: prangley feels the mountain is partly to blame. he says no one was working at the shutdown button. >> i screamed as loud as i could for help. at that point, when i saw there was no one there, i knew it was on my shoulders. i thought i could hold him. i tried. reporter: dragon mountain says there were two people operating the lift, including the operations manager. cameron fell on a trail that is closed, so they did not know what happened until his dad reach the top. a state inspection on sunday found no mechanical issue and it was clear to open. prangley hopes others will be extra cautious at ski resorts. >> i do not want any parent to have the situation that i had, to watch your child fall and not know if he is going to be ok. that is the thing that will probably traumatize me forever.

the staff and prangley feel bad it happened, but are thankful cameron will be fine. jean: thanks, mike. one man died and a woman and child were hurt in a crash on interstate 89 in grantham last night. state police say their suv veered off 89 south into the median before hitting several trees around 7:30 last night. troopers say the man, who was driving, was pronounced dead at the scene. the woman was airlifted to dartmouth-hitchcock medical center with multiple injuries. the child suffered minor injuries. rochester police are warning people about a police impersonator. the department says someone approached two juveniles on hanson street in a crown victoria with flashing lights shortly before 5:00 yesterday evening. the man told the kids it was illegal to carry a baseball bat and took it from them. he was last seen driving north on wakefield street. police say the man was wearing a uniform with one arm patch and a badge.

anyone with information is urged to contact rochester police. rochester police are also investigating a fire as suspicious. police say this trailer at the rochester fair grounds was destroyed by a fire on december 26. investigators say they could not find a reason for the fire to start naturally. anyone with information is asked to call police. a driver was arrested after a state police aircraft recorded him driving at 105 miles per hour in a 70 zone. 21-year-old paul kimble of laconia was arrested for reckless driving. state troopers say he was driving northbound on i-93 in new hampton and passing other cars in the left lane. as you have probably heard by now, nobody won powerball last night, which means the jackpot is jumping. wednesday' s jackpot is estimated at $400 million. that makes it one of the top 10 largest prizes in the game' s history. while no one won yesterday' s

jean: developing now, it was already early monday morning in india when a 6.7 magnitude earthquake hit the northeastern part of the country. the earthquake happened just before dawn there. at least four were killed and 100 injured. the walls of the state capitol building cracked. in san bernardino, the inland regional center, where a husband and wife killed 14 people last month, will reopen tomorrow. the office, which provides aid to children and adults with

been closed since the terror attack on december 2. nearly 600 people will return to work in the morning. there are no plans to open the conference center where the massacre took place. a northeastern university student who went missing in november has been found dead. investigators say a body found in the charles river this past thursday has been identified as the missing 21-year-old student. he was a native of kenya, studying media arts. investigators say that his death is not considered suspicious at this time. counselors will be on hand at northeastern tomorrow. in rural oregon, protesters have seized control of a national wildlife refuge. local ranchers are upset over grazing rights. abc' s kendis gibson explains what' s happening. reporter: with grievances and guns, dozens of armed military members have taken over a federal building in the oregon back country. >> it is rightfully owned by the

people. reporter: they moved in saturday. >> it is the duty of the people to put the government in its place. reporter: one of their grievances, the sentencing of local ranchers for arson. they were in a dispute with the federal government over land rights. >> we support the constitution of the united states. reporter: monday, cliven bundy was involved in a dispute over grazing rights. bundy says they have come with generators and other supplies. put until local government gives the two ranchers safe haven. local schools have been closed for the week, and law stay away. they accused the militia of attempting to overthrow the county and federal government in hopes of sparking a movement across the united states. tensions are high.

and this cold front passes through tonight. the coldest air we have had so in. showers. you could even see a couple of them in higher elevations of the white mountains. for the most part, they have been confined to areas north of the lakes region. 30 degrees in concord. 29 in manchester. upper 20' s in plymouth. you are starting to see the real where the arctic air is coming from. 28 in whitefield and berlin. this is nothing compared to how cold it is to the north in quebec and ontario. this is where our air will be coming from, not the west. arctic air in the next 24 hours

in december, temperatures were well above average. it ended up the warmest december on record in new hampshire. the jet stream has sunk to the south, allowing cold arctic air northeast. this will be the coldest air we have had since last winter. the wind has been shifting out of the west for most of the day. now they are shifting to be more northwesterly. in wakefield, 13 miles per hour, helping to usher in the colder air. it will feel in even chillier tomorrow. this is the windchill forecast for you at 3:00 in the afternoon. it will feel like five below when the kids are getting out of school in whitefield and berlin. seven in manchester.

jason: patriots closed out the season with a second consecutive loss. they had a chance to clinch the top seed, but needed to beat the dolphins. slow first half for the pats, and a scary one. tom brady hit from behind by ndamukong suh. brady was in obvious pain. no penalty on the play. he limped to the sideline and had his right ankle taped. he did return to the game, though. serious. half. ryan tannehill to devante tannehill' s first touchdown pass since week 14. dolphins led 10-3 at halftime. brady threw for just 20 yards in the first half. but a big chunk in the second half. down to the six yard line. a couple plays later, stephen jackson will barrel into the end

in the third quarter, peyton manning replaced brock osweiler, his first action since week 10. the broncos scored on four of manning's first five possessions, including this 23-yard touchdown run by ronnie hillman in the fourth to break a 20-20 tie. denver claims the top seed in the afc with a 27-20 win. the jets would clinch a playoff spot with a win in buffalo. fourth quarter, 19-17, bills. ryan fitzpatrick picked off by leodis mckelvin in the end zone. fitzpatrick was picked off three times in the fourth quarter. bills hang on 22-17. the steelers could get in with a win in cleveland. then roethlisberger connects with antonio brown. brown became the first player in league history to have 125 catches in two straight seasons. steelers win 28-12, so they take the final playoff spot in the eastern conference. the jets are out.

jason: the monarchs played the rubber match of their three-game weekend with the greenville swamp rabbits. second period, no score, derik angeli, drags, shoots, and scores. 1-0 monarchs after two periods. just three minutes into the third, derek arnold forces a turnover, gets behind the defense, and scores, 2-0. but greenville scored twice in the final four minutes, this one with an extra skater. 1:08 to go. for the third straight time, the two teams went to overtime, and for the second straight night, grennville wins it 3-2 in a shootout. >> we were all over them the whole game. we kind of gave them a couple chances. good for them. but we have to figure out how to capitalize and end those games. jason: a couple days off. they play adirondack on wednesday. jean: thanks, jason. hayley: cold days ahead.
