daybreak." erin: good morning, new hampshire. thanks for waking up with us on this monday. back to school and back to work for a lot of people after holiday vacations. it looks like it is going to be a cold one out there. it is. we want to check in with kevin skarupa. we're getting back to normal temperatures. kevin: temperatures today starting off from the teens to lower and mid 20's. only continuing to fall from here as we go through the afternoon thanks to an northerly breeze continuing to bring in the colder air. cloudy to partly cloudy skies. there's the risk of a couple of light snow showers or flurries through the day. we aren't expecting anything to accumulate temperatures in the teens to lower range of the 20's with a pretty good breeze. we are already back behind zero in pittsburgh. much colder air building we'll talk about how long it lasts coming up. davidson. good monday morning,

there are going to be a lot of company on the road today. total of six candidates crisscrossing southern and central parts of new hampshire today. most have multiple top is its planned. this is likely what to expect. on the republican side, marco rubio kicks the day off with a 7:30 town hall in hooksett. rand paul, carlly fiorina, chris christie, and john kasich have events today. bernie sanders and former president bill clinton is here rallies support for his wife. all of the campaigns recognize how important new hampshire is. sanders is already admitted he likely needs to win here if he's going to have any chance. the granite state could make or break several republicans. >> they have to do well here. i think that's either -- at least second place or go home. that would include new

jersey governor and jeb bush. ray: it will be key for fiorina and rubio as well. if donald trump loses the iowa caucuses, the granite state will become crucial. pretty safe to say new hampshire is going to be busy for the next month. each candidate pushing hard for your vote. reporting in the studio, ray brewer. erin: all right. thank you. governor maggie hassan has broken a record when it comes to fundraising. political reporter broke the numbers on our web site over night. hassan declared on october 5th that she is running for kelly ayotte's seat in the u.s. senate. hassan raised $2.1 million in the last three months of 2015 breaking a record for one quarter during an off year. and her campaign currently has $1.5 million on hand. ayotte has not yet released her fundraising numbers. you can get complete political coverage and analysis at wmur.com. armed protesters

upset with the federal government have taken control of a national wildlife refuge in rural oregon. they say they are prepared to occupy the land for as long as it takes. the group including the son of nevada rancher, cliven bundy, that was involved in a standoff in 2014. megan hughes is following the situation. ray: armed militiaman a tower usually used to spot wild fires. it has been taken over. >> it is rightfully owned by the people. principles we adhere to the constitution of the united states. >> they've come with generators and other supplies, preparing for seize-like conditions. local law enforcement away. the fbi has taken over. high. >> it is frightening when there's people making threats and people touting guns. >> people are afraid.

>> it is the duty of the people to put that government back in its place. ray: bundy along with his father were involved in a standoff over grazing rights over two years ago. the latest incident now occupation started with a protest over the sentencing of two local ranchers for setting fires on federal land. steve and dwight went to jail for 90 days. the government is calling for them to serve out the five-year sentence. >> to think there's this many people showing up opinion i hope to see in five years. >> the hammonds said they will turn themselves in today in california. the agency is hoping for a peaceful resolution. megan hughes, abc news, washington. erin: state police have now identified the man killed in a crash on interstate 89 in grantham saturday night.

24-year-old elie-carmiche alvarado was killed. a female passenger was flown to dartmouth hitchcock with several injuries and a child in a safety seat was treated for only minor injuries. a laconia man is accused of driving $105 miles per hour on interstate 93. 21-year-old paul kimble is charged with reckless driving. troopers clocked him from the air. a man is due in court in maine today after police say he caused a standoff with officers early yesterday morning. sheriff deputies say that andrew mayer went to his estranged girlfriend's home and grabbed an ak-47 and threatened to kill himself. police say the bail conditions stated he could not have any contact with his former girlfriend. deputies finally used a taser to subdue him after he came outside. police in rochester now say a fire that destroyed a trailer at

erin: saudi arabia has severed diplomatic relations with iran. within the last half an hour, bahrain announced it is cutting ties with iran as well. the move comes hours after protesters set fire to the saudi embassy in tehran. that followed the mass execution on saturday. 47 people by saudi arabia including a prominent shiite cleric. leaders are announcing accusations at each other. for the first time we're seeing video of the cargo ship el faro. the ship sank at 15,000 feet killing all 33 people on board, including several with ties to new england. federal investigators released the video last night and say they are considering launching another search to try to find the ship's black

box. california have arrested a man accused of armed robbery after he took a snap chat selfie with one of the victims. officers say victor almanza-martinez and two other men stole several items and a car. before they took off, almanza-martinez exchanged snapchat information with one of the female victims. they posed for a selfie. that was the picture that helped lead to an arrest. all buses must take homeless people to shelters. andrew cuomo signed an executive order saying it is necessary to prevent hypothermia and death. some have questioned whether it is legal without a law. the force has carried star wars in to

"the force awakens" raked in $88 million. that brings the total in 19 days to more than $740 million. making it the second highest domestic earning movie of all time just $20 million behind "avatar." the new mark wahlberg comedy, "daddy's home" was a distant second. it could take four to six months for home delivery to get back to normal. reporters and staffers helped deliver the sunday edition. a week after a new distribution service took over and they haven't gotten the paper at all. the globe is offering refunds to affected customers. officials say they are working around the clock to improve that situation. what would you do with $400 million?

it is expected to grow before wednesday's drawing. the payout would be about $245 million. your chances of winning the jackpot are, you know, brit long. about one in $300 million. it is so nice to dream, isn't it? kevin: it is. i don't think that's going to defer any folks. that's a lot of reasons to count with all of the none. erin: take a chance. kevin: absolutely. we start off this morning. you'll notice we have temperatures in the mid to upper 20's along the sea seacoast. a fairly light breeze. that will start picking up and go 10-15 miles an hour. we're looking at temperatures to continue to slide through the day kind of offset by any increasing sunshine that we'll have. cloudy to partly cloudy skies across the area. a few flurries. a few more are a possibility in to the afternoon. a few of those on future cast in a minute. beyond that, we're looking at the colder air to continue to rush in out of central parts of canada.

that means some cold air. as cold as we've been this season through tonight, tomorrow night, and early on wednesday before starting to moderate. we have dropped to four on top -- two below on top of mt. washington. four in berlin. we are already below zero in pittsburgh and in colebrook. the colder air continues to seep in through the day. you start off above normal for this time of dy and this time of year in southern areas, don't be fooled by that. there isn't going to be much of a climb. notice the winds which are starting to pick up. the occasional gust. this is what you dress for this morning. wind chills in the single digits to mid to upper teens. those probably aren't going anywhere as temperatures hold steady or continue to fall back. we open the door to the colder air out of canada. early afternoon temperatures single digits and teens northern of the notches. lower to mid 20's.

after about noontime or 1:00, is isn't going to be the temperature climb at all. if anything, temperatures will start sliding back. they will have the proverbial running start. there could be a couple of flurries or snow showers in spots. future cast painting the picture here of a couple of slight snow showers. don't be surprised if you see those through the day. that's a fairly weak system. maybe just a spotty, light coating. temperatures double digits below zero. singling digits fromman chester to the shoreline. likely below zero. we eventually get back in to the teens to 20's tomorrow. then back in to the 30's after another cold night tuesday night early wednesday. then from there, the moderating trend continuing through the end of the week. ahead of the next system which tries to arrive on saturday. it could be a mixture of light rain or light snow by the time we get there. 20's and eventually slipping back to the teens.

up a store in berlin. police believe 32-year-old ryan morton oned the berlin mills variety store the day after christmas. he was arrested last week on a charged of arming robbery. the father of a boy who was injured after falling off of a chair lift is talking about the frightening experience. on saturday doug prangley was riding a life with his twin sons. one of the boys slipped and fell about 20 to 30 feet. doug says the lift never stopped because no one was working at the shutdown button. ragged mountain says two people were operating the lift booth and ski patrol did not know what happened until the boy's father reached the top. >> i screamed as loud as i can for help. and at that point there was no one there. i knew it was -- it was on my shoulders. i thought i could hold him. i tried. i don't want any parent to have to make the choice or have the situation that i had and

to watch your child fall and not know if he's going to be okay. i mean that's -- that's the thing that just will probably traumatize me forever. erin: aside from a concussion and bruises, the son is expected to be okay. the mountain says the state expected the lift and determined there were no mechanical issues so it was cleared to open. the first feature length documentary about the boston marathon is now in the works. the creators of the film titled "boston" say it will go beyond the 2013 bombings and follow the history of the marathon. the film is set to premier in 2017. a stage play and an hbo special are also in production right now. one will feature boston native mark wahlberg. the two projects will only focus on the marathon bombings. coming up on "daybreak," a terrifying situation for church goers in north carolina. we'll tell you how their pastor helped a man who walked in to the church armed with a gun.

over the vatican. they were patrolling for illegal street venators when they spotted the aircraft. they located the pilot and seized the drone, which was equipped with a video camera. and a man armed with a gun walked in to the church. >> he said i came here with terrible things on my mind. i was going to do some bad things. erin: the pastor was in the middle of his sermon. he spotted a man holding a rifle in the air. he left the podium and confronted the stranger as the church members ran for the door. the man said he had previously been hurt by the church, was recently released, and then he asked far prayer. >> when i told the congregation it is okay, he wants a prayer. the power of god hit.

god stepped in. god moved on the young man's heart. instead of him shooting and killing a lot of people, god touched his heart. erin: after staying to watch the rest of the pastor's sermon, that man apologized to the congregation. instead of being charged with a crime, he was taken to a local facility for treatment. turning now to sports, the patriots closed out the regular season by taking on the dolphins in miami. it was a slow first half and a scary one at that. tom brady got hit from behind. he was in obviously pain. he limped to the sideline and had his right ankle taped. the injury did not seem serious. brady did return to the game. tied 10-10 in the fourth quarter. ryan tannehill connected for a two-yard touchdown

winning 3-2 in a shootout. nan chester will play at adirondack on wednesday. >> now your storm watch 9 forecast. erin: all right. the colder air has moved in. we're seeing temperatures in the teens up that way. kevin: we have seen temperatures continuing to fall off just in the last three or four hours. looks like we're going to hold steady and slowly start to fall through the afternoon. beautiful sunrise setting up for several hair yas of the state. we have an overcast sky in others. where we're getting the overcast there's the potential in a few places to see a few flurries or a couple of light snow shower. it isn't just all sunshine and clouds today. there may be a couple of light snow showers out there today even from manchester to the coastline. you'll notice a couple of light flurries and snow showers trying to develop. the colder, drier air tries to wring out any moisture that's leftover

much. even across new hampshire at the present time. we'll continue to see that through the day today with a blend of sunshine and clouds otherwise. air mass coming out of central canada. it will continue to deliver the coldest air we've had this season. the sampling of the reasons. we've been batching temperatures slide back by a degree or two per hour. back in to the teens now. in some places across the lakes region. notice up in the north country. we're down to one lonely degree in stewartstown. two below in pittsburgh. you likely get back through the day. you are going to have the breeze. this is what you want to dress for throughout the day. wind chills in the single digits and teens. temperatures later on today, upper single digits to lower teens north. this likely late morning and early afternoon. then i think as that sun starts to go down 3:00 or 4:00, we're going to notice the colder air continuing to rush in.
