there are going to be a lot of company on the road today. total of six candidates crisscrossing southern and central parts of new hampshire today. most have multiple top is its planned. this is likely what to expect. on the republican side, marco rubio kicks the day off with a 7:30 town hall in hooksett. rand paul, carlly fiorina, chris christie, and john kasich have events today. bernie sanders and former president bill clinton is here rallies support for his wife. all of the campaigns recognize how important new hampshire is. sanders is already admitted he likely needs to win here if he's going to have any chance. the granite state could make or break several republicans. >> they have to do well here. i think that's either -- at least second place or go home. that would include new

jersey governor and jeb bush. ray: it will be key for fiorina and rubio as well. if donald trump loses the iowa caucuses, the granite state will become crucial. pretty safe to say new hampshire is going to be busy for the next month. each candidate pushing hard for your vote. reporting in the studio, ray brewer. erin: all right. thank you. governor maggie hassan has broken a record when it comes to fundraising. political reporter broke the numbers on our web site over night. hassan declared on october 5th that she is running for kelly ayotte's seat in the u.s. senate. hassan raised $2.1 million in the last three months of 2015 breaking a record for one quarter during an off year. and her campaign currently has $1.5 million on hand. ayotte has not yet released her fundraising numbers. you can get complete political coverage and analysis at wmur.com. armed protesters

upset with the federal government have taken control of a national wildlife refuge in rural oregon. they say they are prepared to occupy the land for as long as it takes. the group including the son of nevada rancher, cliven bundy, that was involved in a standoff in 2014. megan hughes is following the situation. ray: armed militiaman a tower usually used to spot wild fires. it has been taken over. >> it is rightfully owned by the people. principles we adhere to the constitution of the united states. >> they've come with generators and other supplies, preparing for seize-like conditions. local law enforcement away. the fbi has taken over. high. >> it is frightening when there's people making threats and people touting guns. >> people are afraid.

24-year-old elie-carmiche alvarado was killed. a female passenger was flown to dartmouth hitchcock with several injuries and a child in a safety seat was treated for only minor injuries. a laconia man is accused of driving $105 miles per hour on interstate 93. 21-year-old paul kimble is charged with reckless driving. troopers clocked him from the air. a man is due in court in maine today after police say he caused a standoff with officers early yesterday morning. sheriff deputies say that andrew mayer went to his estranged girlfriend's home and grabbed an ak-47 and threatened to kill himself. police say the bail conditions stated he could not have any contact with his former girlfriend. deputies finally used a taser to subdue him after he came outside. police in rochester now say a fire that destroyed a trailer at

that means some cold air. as cold as we've been this season through tonight, tomorrow night, and early on wednesday before starting to moderate. we have dropped to four on top -- two below on top of mt. washington. four in berlin. we are already below zero in pittsburgh and in colebrook. the colder air continues to seep in through the day. you start off above normal for this time of dy and this time of year in southern areas, don't be fooled by that. there isn't going to be much of a climb. notice the winds which are starting to pick up. the occasional gust. this is what you dress for this morning. wind chills in the single digits to mid to upper teens. those probably aren't going anywhere as temperatures hold steady or continue to fall back. we open the door to the colder air out of canada. early afternoon temperatures single digits and teens northern of the notches. lower to mid 20's.

after about noontime or 1:00, is isn't going to be the temperature climb at all. if anything, temperatures will start sliding back. they will have the proverbial running start. there could be a couple of flurries or snow showers in spots. future cast painting the picture here of a couple of slight snow showers. don't be surprised if you see those through the day. that's a fairly weak system. maybe just a spotty, light coating. temperatures double digits below zero. singling digits fromman chester to the shoreline. likely below zero. we eventually get back in to the teens to 20's tomorrow. then back in to the 30's after another cold night tuesday night early wednesday. then from there, the moderating trend continuing through the end of the week. ahead of the next system which tries to arrive on saturday. it could be a mixture of light rain or light snow by the time we get there. 20's and eventually slipping back to the teens.

up a store in berlin. police believe 32-year-old ryan morton oned the berlin mills variety store the day after christmas. he was arrested last week on a charged of arming robbery. the father of a boy who was injured after falling off of a chair lift is talking about the frightening experience. on saturday doug prangley was riding a life with his twin sons. one of the boys slipped and fell about 20 to 30 feet. doug says the lift never stopped because no one was working at the shutdown button. ragged mountain says two people were operating the lift booth and ski patrol did not know what happened until the boy's father reached the top. >> i screamed as loud as i can for help. and at that point there was no one there. i knew it was -- it was on my shoulders. i thought i could hold him. i tried. i don't want any parent to have to make the choice or have the situation that i had and

what if we tried to stop one. reporter: the gun lobby is alive and so should the people. action bypassing congress. >> what the president is trying to do now is to expand the instant background check by closing the gun show loophole. >> on the campaign trail, democrat candidates sided with the president. hillary clinton urged lawmakers to come together. >> we need bipartisan consensus on what we should do about guns and a lot of other issues. >> republican hopefuls spoke out against any changes to existing laws. >> i don't like anything having to do with changing our second amendment. we have plenty of rules and regulations. >> this is going to be another illegal executive action which courts. when i become president will be stricken from executive action by executive action i'll take. >> a better approach would be the approach when i was governor of the state of florida where we focused on punishing people that

committed crimes with guns. we enhanced and protected the second amendment rights for law-abiding citizens. >> the president is expected to talk more about this next week when he delivers his final state of the union address. erin? erin: in addition to expanded background checks, what else is the president expected to announce? reporter: well, the man is tightening rules when it comes to reporting lost or stolen guns and beefing up inspections of licensed dealers. erin: we are following a developing story in india. a powerful earthquake killed eight people and others. police say the victims debris. it caused major damage to several buildings. a newly constructed building collapsed in the tremor as well as part of the popular market building. two people were detained in rome after they were caught flying a drone

over the vatican. they were patrolling for illegal street venators when they spotted the aircraft. they located the pilot and seized the drone, which was equipped with a video camera. and a man armed with a gun walked in to the church. >> he said i came here with terrible things on my mind. i was going to do some bad things. erin: the pastor was in the middle of his sermon. he spotted a man holding a rifle in the air. he left the podium and confronted the stranger as the church members ran for the door. the man said he had previously been hurt by the church, was recently released, and then he asked far prayer. >> when i told the congregation it is okay, he wants a prayer. the power of god hit.

god stepped in. god moved on the young man's heart. instead of him shooting and killing a lot of people, god touched his heart. erin: after staying to watch the rest of the pastor's sermon, that man apologized to the congregation. instead of being charged with a crime, he was taken to a local facility for treatment. turning now to sports, the patriots closed out the regular season by taking on the dolphins in miami. it was a slow first half and a scary one at that. tom brady got hit from behind. he was in obviously pain. he limped to the sideline and had his right ankle taped. the injury did not seem serious. brady did return to the game. tied 10-10 in the fourth quarter. ryan tannehill connected for a two-yard touchdown

the dolphins added a field goal and went on to win the game 20-10. >> wallet's have to get better. i think we'll, you know, give us the chance to evasion where we are at. you know, see the things we need to do better for the team to try to win these games. you know, it is obviously a tough sport. you know, you see where you are at after 16 games. just keep fighting on. erin: the broncos won on sunday. denver will be the number one seed in the playoffs now. on to the ice we go. the monarchs played the rubber match with the greenville swamp rabbits on sunday. the game was scoreless in the second. derik angeli scored his fourth goal to give the monarchs a 1-0 lead. derrick arnold forced a turnover. greenville scored twice in the final four minutes to tie the game up and force it no to overtime. greenville ended up

much. even across new hampshire at the present time. we'll continue to see that through the day today with a blend of sunshine and clouds otherwise. air mass coming out of central canada. it will continue to deliver the coldest air we've had this season. the sampling of the reasons. we've been batching temperatures slide back by a degree or two per hour. back in to the teens now. in some places across the lakes region. notice up in the north country. we're down to one lonely degree in stewartstown. two below in pittsburgh. you likely get back through the day. you are going to have the breeze. this is what you want to dress for throughout the day. wind chills in the single digits and teens. temperatures later on today, upper single digits to lower teens north. this likely late morning and early afternoon. then i think as that sun starts to go down 3:00 or 4:00, we're going to notice the colder air continuing to rush in.

the temperatures to continue to fall off. you'll notice again a couple of flurries or light snow showers. don't be surprised if you catch them out there today. nothing that's going to be long-lived over a half an hour to 45 minutes. probably no accumulation out of it. they will be out there. beyond that it is fair skies continue with the breeze continuing to feed in the colder air. there will be a lot of locations below zero. tomorrow teens to lower range of the 20's. we'll recover with full sunshine. then a moderating trend continuing to kick in thereafter. highs back in to the lower -- wednesday another cold morning. that will be probably within a few degrees of where we tomorrow morning. from there, we'll wait on the next system which doesn't arrive until sometime likely centered around saturday. by the time we get there, temperatures will be moderating after the cold start to the workweek. up to either side of 40 by friday.
