tom: a woman fights back against a would-be robber. and a 65-year-old told us it was the first time she had fired her gun. shelley: an emotional president gun control. the changes he wants to make. mike: after another very cold one tonight, temps will be heading higher starting tomorrow. how much warmer it gets. tom: republican presidential candidate donald trump rallies supporters in claremont. what he said after someone called president obama a muslim. shelley: from presidential candidates to families of people fighting addiction people are calling for an end to the opioid abuse crisis. >> this should be the hot topic for the election because it affects every facet of our communities. shelley: the action that advocates say everyone can take.

like we do. shelley: manchester police that would be robbery victim. back against a man a foot taller than her and 100 pounds heavier. she says when he tried to grab m shelley walcott. tom: i' m tom griffith. the 65-year-old woman noticed something was up on her way home from work last night. she spoke to our suzanne roantree who is live in the newsroom. suzanne: just after 11:30 monday night, manchester police say a 65-year-old woman left work, and stopped at the mobil on the run gas station on south wilow street. the woman who doesn' t want to be identified says a car pulled up quickly behind at a stop light.

suzanne: she says the car followed her into her apartment complex on south porter street. and stopped close by to where she had parked. >> someting in my head said to take the gun out of my purse. suzanne with her hand on the gun : now in her coat pocket, she headed toward her apartment. looking behind her, she saw a man following her. >> 10 feet from the front stairs, that' s when he caught up to me and he came around me and stood right in front of me, right in my face. suzanne he then yelled at her. : >> but then when i saw him reach his left arm out to try and grab me, that' s when i pulled the gun out and i shot him. suzanne: the gunshot hit 23-year-old michael bontaites in the chest. >> as soon as i shot him, he immediately fellto the ground. suzanne: a woman who was in the dark sedan picked up bontaites off the ground and put him in the car, all the while yelling at the 65-year-old grandmother. >> gotta get him to the hospital, gotta get him to the hospital. suzanne: she then ran into the building and called 911. as officers were responding to the woman' s 911 call, another manchester police officer identified bontaites as he entered the emergency room at elliot hospital, where he was

the chest. for over 10 years the 65-year-old victim had a valid concealed permit thru the manchester police department. >> last night was the first time i ever shot that gun in all the time i' ve owned it. suzanne: he was arraigned from his hospital bed this afternoon. bail was set at $5,000. police also charged a man who took him to the emergency room. 32-year-old zachary boyd, with being in possession of a knife . suzanne roantree, wmur news 9. re following korea. the country has just announced it has conducted a successful hydrogen bomb test. this comes shortly after officials in south korea detected something that looked like an earthquake near nuclear test site in the north. a confirmed test would be a step toward north korea'

building a weapon that could reach the u.s. mainland. tom: president obama was both tearful and frustrated today as he outlined executive actions regarding guns. the president wiped away tears as he talked about the children killed in the shooting at sandy hook elementary school in connecticut. he announced a 10-point plan today, that includes expanding background checks, requiring all gun dealers to be licensed, overhauling the fbi' s background check system, and increasing the use of mental health information for checks. president obama: each time this comes up, we are fed the excuse that common sense reforms, like background checks, might not have stopped the last massacre or the one before that or the one before that. so, why bother trying? i reject that thinking. tom: the national rifle association says the president' s executive actions are ripe for abuse and wouldn' t have

shootings that he mentioned during his announcement today. shelley: donald trump had his own criticisms for the president' s executive actions. while he called out the president on the second amendment, he did not dwell on the issue. adam sexton was there and begins our commitment 2015 coverage. adam: greeted by a crowd of more than 1000 people in claremont tuesday night, donald trump started off by touting yet another poll that showed him lapping the field. >> people say why do you always talk about the polls? i say because i am winning. >> he slammed president obama' s executive action on guns and then turned to hillary clinton and his gop competition. >> i haven'

earlier the republican visited the halligan tavern in derry and spoke at a heroin forum at snhu. in a one on one interview with news 9 bush said winning new hampshire would have a big impact on the rest of the re surging towards this woman power to enhance our voter contact efforts. i think we' ll have and we have now, the best in the field. so i feel good about where we are. tom: bush continues campaigning in the granite state tomorrow, with events including a town hall meeting in meredith. shelley: also holding a town hall tonight republican presidential candidate rand paul. he answered questions from voters in exeter. the kentucky senator made a few stops in new hampshire today including at the new hampshire primary student convention, and a town hall in concord. carly fiorina wrapped up her day at a town hall meeting in hooks it. tomorrow she will be in northwood where voters can have

she will stop at a restaurant in dover at noon and has a town hall planned for the evening in exeter. tom: a number of those presidential candidates spent address the state' s heroin and opioid crisis. >> to me, it all starts with the family. those kids at a very young age. s protocols, it' s busting the dealers, it' s having money for rehab, it' s making sure you free up resources at the local level. all of these things should be done at once. tom: presidential hopefuls and several activists talked about solutions to battle addiction. wmur' s mike cronin joins us live with reaction. mike: we heard some powerful stories today from people who have lived through substance abuse and from those who have lost loved ones to addiction. it' s been more than a year and a half since kriss blevens' s stepdaughter amber died after overdosing on heroin. blevens says the 22-year-old was found in a manchester alley.

ve become a voice and an advocate. mike: blevens brought amber' s story to southern new hampshire university for an event focused on curbing addiction. on wednesday she takes her message to washington dc where she and her husband will speak before congress. >> her life, her death, and her vibrant spirit now speak through me to help those who cannot speak for themselves anymore. mike: this afternoon blevens was one of several to talk at the new hampshire forum on addiction and the heroin epidemic. it brought together five presidential candidates, the state' s top elected leaders, and dozens of treatment advocates like dean lemire. he' s in long term recovery and now helps people battling addiction. >> and so many of the people that i went to high school with in wealthy exeter, new hampshire, are dying from this disease. mike: while a legislative response is needed event organizers say people need to get involved. >> everybody will say, what can i do? well you can go, you can contact them what you think. s

becoming a talking point on the campaign trail. now she wants that to be the case in our nation' s capitol. this should be the hot topic for >> the election because it affects every facet of our communities. she needs funding for overnight staffing. reporting live in the studio mike cronin, wmur news 9. ,tom: the department of health and human services getting $150 million to help lower health care costs and strengthen substance abuse care. the governor' s office and dhhs announced the plan today. for 5 years, the state will receive up to $30 million a year. it will be used to strengthen the state' s behavioral health system, mental health and substance abuse care. shelley: rescue crews saved a deer that fell through thin ice in rindge. crews responded to emerson pond early this evening and used an ice rescue sled to get the deer out of the pond.

>> were not experts on cultures, but most of us are parents and i think regardless of where you are from, you don' t -- it should pretty much be instinctuallly that you don' t leave in the car in extreme temperatures of any kind. tom: police say the 8-month-old was only in the car for 10 minutes. the infant was taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution. the mother is charged with child endangerment. shelley: ted gatsas took the oath of office today to start his third term as mayor of manchester. at a ceremony at the palace theater, gatsas spoke about his successes over the past 6 years, including bringing new businesses to the city and opening a family emergency shelter. he says the next fight is taking on the heroin and opioid epidemic. >> today we begin the process of governing together. we must cast politics and personality aside and put the betterment of the queen city

ve set aside for inspiration, and i hope you will join me and do the same. shelley: three prior mayors as well as the entire gatsas family attended the ceremony. tom: a number of u.s. airlines will be raising roundtrip fares. base fares on domestic flights will go up by $6. j.p. morgan chase says delta air lines started boosting its prices yesterday. southwest quickly followed suit and today american, united, jetblue and virgin america said they would match the increase. shelley: skiers will be back on the slopes at mcintyre ski area in manchester tomorrow. last month' s mild weather forced mcintyre to delay its planned opening by more than a week. with this cold weather, the ski area has been making snow around the clock to get the slopes open. mcintyre will let skiers hit the slopes starting at 3:00 p.m.

re just really excited to have all of our season pass holders and guests to come and enjoy the white snow and get out there an ski and ride and tubing will be following up in a week or two. shelley: all ski lessons will start this weekend and the after school program will begin next week. the weather system that brought us a mild december will leave its mark in the record books. meteorologists at the federal climate prediction center say the current el nino is tied for the strongest one recorded. that was the el nino seen in winter of 1997 and 1998. the measurement is based on how warm parts of the central pacific ocean are for 3 el nino' s impact typically peaks in january. tom: we will get a little bit warmer tonight into tomorrow. mike: that feel of arctic midwinter chill. take a look at the time lapse out at the coast today.

sunny day but that' s deceiving because temperatures ran well below average by six or seven degrees in many spots. that includes the state capital, the average 31. the low this morning was four degrees. nowhere close to the record, 18 below, set back in 1996. looking ahead, another very cold night. some parts of northern new hampshire between five and 10 below zero but warmer air starts to move in starting tomorrow. once we get into friday, and onshore wind will bring a few unsettled weather this weekend but no big snowstorm right now. a little too warm for when the on sunday. a couple of snow showers leading it that on saturday. temperatures right now, single

washington sitting several degrees above zero. the air mass beginning to warm up a little bit that any sunshine, we will see the temperatures finally back above the melting point. single digits upper valley through plymouth, eight in concord and between 9-13 in a good part of the monadnock region. we will bottom out in the single digits and around six or seven below of north. temperatures real rise a little bit towards daybreak. it' s warmer than it is over new england right now so this is moving and not only for wednesday but through the upcoming weekend. the weather map is very quiet, not much to speak of. high pressure building in means light wins tonight and clear skies for the overnight into early wednesday.

not much of a change into thursday. once we get into friday the winds will kick onshore so there will be a few clouds blending in with the sun but most of the shower stillwell back to the west. by the time they bump into the cold saturday there could be a couple of snow showers with light accumulation and steadier rain moves in on sunday. highs for tomorrow, a nice job above where they were the past couple of days. mid-to-upper 30 central and around 40 in manchester. tonight again it' s a cold one with clear skies, several degrees below and the great north woods but rising by morning. a very nice couple of days for wednesday and thursday. clouds and sunshine mixed on right eight. once we get into saturday there could be a snow shower or two in the morning and a rain shower possible late.

providence took a 3 point lead. marquette pulls out the close-win, 65-64. another big matchup in college hoops, number 9 kentucky at lsu. the tigers from lsu feature the top college player, freshman ben simmons. at this point he would be the number one pick in the draft. simmons scores here on a half-court alley oop dunk, too easy for him. his teammates were great. he goes 6 foot 10 inches, plays like a point guard. he drives and scores. he is unstoppable when he gets it going, which is a lot. 13 points, 10 rebounds. lsu gets a huge victory over kentucky. in the elm city, keene state hosted castleton state. owls in white. good passing here, ty nichols to nate stitchell and back to nichols for the layup. he led with 15 points. then off the inbounds play by the spartans and matt ozzella gets the steal and takes it in for the score. 36-29 owls by 7.
