ray brewer is live in salem with a look at the damage. ray: several of those residents woke up to find their mailboxes, cars, and homes had been spray-painted. this is not the first time. police in salem say a dozen homes were targeted this week, but they think that number could rise. many of the same people were hit by vandals back in august. officers say it is possible that the people responsible live in the area. while they don' t think there was any real danger, they are asking residents to be vigilant. residents say the experiences frustrating. >> really discouraging. 23 years in this neighborhood. this year is the first time anything has happened. it is just not fair. ray: police say one of the messages spray-painted on a garage door said "we'

room, and additional gallery spaces. it is scheduled to reopen to the public in 2019. house lawmakers will limit the federal expenses for former president spaced based upon how much money they make each year. presidents get a pension of more than $200,000 per year after leaving office. they are also covered for expenses for travel and office space that can total more than $1 million. those expense payments would now be reduced for any former president earning more than four hundred thousand dollars per year. sean: there is help available for anyone whose pets runoff. the app called "finding rover" uses animal facial recognition. you can take a picture of your pet and the picture can be used to scan found animals.

fair skies for thursday and friday. the strengthening will continue to occur the farther north and east you go. we have winter weather advisory' s posted for western parts of maine. winter storm warnings back to the north and east of that. morning commute. we will be adding clouds late morning and early afternoon. a quick, alberta-type clipper system moves through. some of the snow falls during the evening commute. there could be a burst of moderate to briefly heavy snow through. single digits up north, near 20 in the southern areas. back to near 30 for highs today. you can see the reinforcing shot of colder air behind this system

in >> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now, wmur news nine daybreak. sean: good morning. it' s tuesday, january 12. 18 degrees and we have a little snow in the forecast today. erin: we will take a look at that right after top stories this morning. a $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of whoever is responsible for vandalizing homes, cars, and mailboxes in one salem neighborhood. the man accused of kidnapping and torturing a north conway teen has lost most of his attempts to have evidence against him thrown out ahead of his upcoming trial. and canterbury' s board of selectmen has asked the merrimack county sheriff' s office to conduct a review of the town'

throughout the entire state of new hampshire. to the state line with massachusetts, if you are starting your commute on the seacoast, interstate 95 is also moving well in both directions. it is on 128 northbound on exit 32. getting by. expect some major delays at the commute gets going including onlooker delays on the southbound side. throughout the day, i' davidson for 95.7 wzid. erin: police are trying to track down whoever is responsible for vandalizing a salem neighborhood. sean: people living along norwood road woke up yesterday morning to find their houses and mailboxes spray painted. this is not the first case of vandalism this neighborhood has dealt with. many of the victims were also hit in august. ray brewer joins us live in salem now to explain why police believe the same people are likely behind both incidents.

ray: good morning. salem police say it is possible that whoever is responsible for the graffiti lives in the general area. and while they don' t think anyone is in any danger, they are urging people to keep their eyes open. >> same mailbox, hit again. ray: charlene morgano' s mailbox was spray painted in august when vandals went through this neighborhood around norwood road. monday morning, she found this message. >> really discouraging because 23 years in the neighborhood, this year is the first time s just not fair for the people that live here and the kids that are growing up. ray: salem police say about a dozen houses, cars, and mailboxes were hit some time between sunday night and early monday morning. many of those victimized were also tagged in august like eric demers, who had graffiti written on his mailbox and his garage >> it' s a little disappointing

i would never have done that when i was a kid and never have so it' s a little disappointing seeing other kids do that type of thing. >> it' s discouraging. it' s frustrating. i leave early in the morning and i come home at night to this and i see this vandalism and it' s not right. ray: a $1,000 reward is now being offered to anyone who may have information leading to an arrest. tips can be found in to the salem police department. live in salem, ray brewer, wmur news 9. erin: the man accused of kidnapping and torturing a north conway teen and holding her captive for months lost most of his attempts to get evidence against him tossed out before his trial. nathaniel kibby' s defense tried to have 55 pieces of evidence suppressed, calling the search warrants executed by the state a "fishing expedition." as more court documents become public, the alleged victim reveals unspeakable abuse involving a shock collar, masks, and other items. the assaults allegedly happened nearly every day, multiple times

lasted more than 9 months. kibby' s attorneys are mounting a vigorous defense. they attempted to have associate attorney general jane young recused from the case after authorities say kibby was recorded making lewd and violent threats about young during a jailhouse phone call, but that motion and many others were denied monday by the judge. kibby' s trial is set to begin in june. sean: canterbury selectmen have sheriff' s office to conduct a formal review of the town' s police department. back in december, residents called for the department to be eliminated, saying it needs more oversight. that prompted the request for the review, which will go over policies and procedures. this all comes following the arrest of canterbury police chief john laroche. he is accused of sexually assaulting a teenager more than a decade ago while he was working for the boscawen police department. erin: lebanon police are asking for your help in tracking down a suspected thief. they say the man in these surveillance pictures used a stolen credit card to buy more

the price chopper in west lebanon on christmas eve. anyone who recognizes him is urged to contact lebanon police. a judge in concord has ruled that a pair of pit bulls that were involved in an attack will not be put down. fish and game deputy dave eskeland and his dog were attacked as they walked on a path near his home in bow back in october. in an agreement with the court, the dogs' owner will pay a fine, veterinary bills, and will keep the dogs chained. sean: a couple of granite staters are helping out a philadelphia police officer who was shot in the line of duty. last week, a gunman ambushed officer jesse hartnett while he was sitting in his police cruiser and fired at least thirteen shots at him. officer hartnett was hit 3 times. now, two of his friends, who live in berlin, are raising money to help pay his medical costs. >> you hear about these stories of police officers and firemen and service members and the things that they go through in their regular line of work, and

afternoon, which could make for look evening commute with high temperatures in the 20' s and lower range of 30' s. we will look ahead to another system down the road with your forecast coming up here. sean: we are following a developing story out of turkey. an overnight explosion at an historic site in istanbul that is popular with tourists killed at least ten people and injured fifteen others. this is still a fluid situation there. there is no word yet on the cause of the explosion, but state-run television says the suicide bomber. erin: a teen in massachusetts is recovering this morning after being hit by a stray bullet while standing in his kitchen. sean: scary stuff. outside the teen' s apartment complex in brockton. one of the bullets traveled through a window and hit the 17-year-old in the back. the bullet passed through his body and went through his chest. police and witnesses say several vehicles in the area were also hit.

one of the bullets ricocheted off the hood of this vehicle, went in, hit the visor, went straight in and broke the window. the bullet was in the back seat of my truck. sean: police are still searching for whoever is responsible for erin: a family of four was killed in a house explosion in ohio last night. fire officials say the bodies of a mother and her two daughters, ages eight and 12, were found near the front of the house. the father' s body was found in the back. neighbors say the explosion was so powerful that it shook nearby homes. some of them rushed to the house to try to save the family inside. >> a lot of smoke and started screaming to ask if anyone was in there. nobody responded. we cannot get upstairs because that was engulfed in flames. erin: the family' s dog survived the blast. the cause of the explosion

sean: in the 8 weeks leading up we' re focusing on 8 of the biggest issues facing the country. so far, education has not been a big talker in the race for the white house. wmur' s nikole killion explains why. nikole: with concerns from terror to the economy dominating headlines, education is still at the head of the class for many voters. >> historically, education has been a really important issue. nikole: policy expert rick hess on why it matters. >> people care about social security. they care about healthcare about roads and bridges and obviously they care a lot about schools and colleges, but how much they focus on these things really depends on how the election plays out. >> when we look at data on how satisfied people are with public schools, they tend to assign quite favorable ratings to their schools in their local community even as they express concern with schools nationally. nikole: topping the list of concerns -- the cost of higher education, charter schools, and

app to see where all the presidential candidates stand on this and other important issues. erin: in sports, the college football national championship played out in glendale, arizona last night. alabama faced off against clemson for the coveted tittle. test title. in a frantic fourth quarter, alabama outscored 24-16 to win the game by a final score of 45-40. heisman trophy winner derrick henry ran for 158 yards and 3 touchdowns. the crimson tide has now won 4 national titles in the past 7 years. clemson won its only national title in 1981. sean: the bruins were in new york last night, hoping to climb out of their recent slump. boston had lost six of their last 8 games entering this one. the game was tied 1-1 in the third period when the rangers scored with less than two minutes to play, winning the game 2-1. the slump continues. boston will play at philadelphia tomorrow. erin: it' s game week for the new england patriots. they are preparing to take on

saturday. the last time the two teams met was week four of last season when the chiefs rolled all over new england, winning 41-14. kansas city has won 11 straight games and has one of the best front five in football. good news for the patriots -- receiver julian edelman has been cleared by doctors to play for the first time since mid-november. sean: a thief in oregon made a bold move while stealing a reptile from a pet store. surveillance cameras were rolling when the suspect tried to be sneaky by stuffing a snake down his pants. the manager says the snake was a two-foot long ball python. she says the thief was able to make an escape before she noticed that the snake was gone. >> then you' ll see him put it in his pants. yuck. just drops it right in the front. >> he' s lucky it wasn' t feeding day. feeding days are on mondays. and they'

sean: the pet store manager says the snake was being sold for $200 could . the owner says if the thief is caught, she will press charges. it begs the question -- is it really worth it to us steal the snake by sticking it down your pants? i would say it' s no. that' s one man' s opinion. kevin: when you' re caught, you say they were caught red-handed. what about that situation? you guys are asking questions. sean: i didn' t ask that question. erin: ivan said much at all here. kevin: we start off early this morning was sunshine across the good part of the state for the morning commute. by the time we get to the evening commute, light snow will be around to temperatures at or below the freezing mark for a

comes down for a general one to three inches of accumulation. the good news is that it is a fairly quick moving system and it will not be a huge system lingering tonight and late tomorrow. temperatures at or below freezing will make roadways trying at times. the cold wind sets up for tomorrow and the temperatures not back above the freezing mark until maybe sometime on friday. the windchill' s likely tomorrow will only be in the tens. amounts will not be that great, but the impact has to do with the timing. as it develops in western and northern areas of the state in early to mid afternoon and eastern and southern areas of the state, we likely have an impact as far as the evening commute is concerned. we start with sunshine and we will add clouds either side of midday. this system swings through from southwest to northeast as we work our way into this evening before wrapping up.

are in the teens, maybe to 20 degrees in a couple spots near the coast and in the single digits farther north. it will be a fairly light fluff snow. you make it a mixture of rain jobs with temperatures in the low-to-mid 30' s. in one sections again are in the upper 20' s to the lower range of the 30' s and maybe cool i by couple of degrees. temperatures later on will be in the mid-20' s to the lower half of the 30' s. as we go through the evening everywhere. pockets of snow could be falling moderately at times. going through about 9:00 or quickly. the winds out of the southwest 20' s likely in the single digits and teens. we continue on with fair skies

apple is adding a night shift mode in its next operating system update. the company added the option based on a study that says exposure to blue light from screens in the evening can make it harder for you to fall asleep. night shift mode automatically shifts the colors on your iphone or ipad display to warmer colors, making things easier on your eyes at night. in the morning, it will return to its regular settings. interesting. erin: the cincinnati zoo is honoring the legacy of late singer david bowie. it named this baby penguin bowie just days before the singer' s death. david bowie' s birthday, january 8, weighing less than two ounces. the penguin will make its public debut this spring. sean: i suspect that will be one popular penguin. erin: the iconic playboy mansion in los angeles is now up for sale. sean: according to playboy enterprises, the property and
