snow is already fall in parts of the state and will only pick up as the night goes on. let's start our weather coverage with chief meteorologist mike haddad. mike: very weak storm moving through, but it's just enough snow to make the roads slick. take a look at the scene in dublin where we do have snow beginning to coat the ground. if you're traveling, it is going to be slick and here's the reason why. temperatures for manchester points north and northwest all freezing or below, and even though the snow is going to be on the light side this is what we're expecting. on average about 1 to 3 inches, not a whole lot, but all it takes is a coating to a half inch to make the roads slick. a little bit more possibility once you get into the mount washington valley through the great north woods and points north and east, once the storm really cranks up later tonight. but too far to the east to give new hampshire a heavy dumping of snow. take a look at doppler radar, some areas are experiencing light snow right now.

on radar isn't reaching the ground. so a closer look, we'll see what's happening in southern new hampshire, we'll toss it to josh judge who is in milford. josh: the as to began about 5 or 10 minutes ago, it very light now. but as we look at the radar, there's going to be the areas of snow that move on up and it picks up, it will lighten up and then pick up once again, it's been a very fine snow so far. some areas starting as very light freezing rain or just tiny little ice crystals, just as it gets going. let's take a closer look at the doppler radar and we'll show you what we've been seeing. in southern new hampshire, some areas looks like snow has overspread the area, but as you alluded to, mike, the air is so dry that that snow is not reaching the ground everywhere. the snow begins to fall and it evaporates. in northern new hampshire there's been snow off and on throughout the day, upper valley

and white mountains. especially toward the eastern side of the state. we are here live now in milford, again, the snow even since i started talking has begun picking up a little more, we'll keep a watch on it. i'm josh judge, wmur news 9. josh: this snow arrived just in time for the evening commute. here's a look at i-93 going through hooksett. jean: crews did their best to prepare the who is and side roads, spraying the brine lines onto the pavement in advance of the snow. adam sexton is live on route 101 where the ride home could be tricky. reporter: yes, right now for folks in the monadnock region not so bad, if you're leaving work right now you'll probably get home without too many problems. the snow just starting to fall. traffic on 101 moving smoothly at this time. we're by the old state police

street and takes that westerly jog towards wilton. you can see there's a little snow kicking up right now, but otherwise quite clear. possibly some pretreatment out here, so if you're commuting right now you're not going to road on the way home. but throughout the night that will change and we'll have another uptate at 6:00. i'm adam sexton, wmur news 9. jean: thanks. you can track this winter weather with live radar on app. you'll also find any closures or parking bans for communities already declaring snow emergencies. tonight a church that stood in grafton for more than 200 years has been destroyed by fire. investigators say one man is still unaccounted for. they got the call about 11:00 this morning, and that fire quickly went to two alarms. the grafton fire chief says the pastor of the church lived in the back end of the building and

they had to wait hours before getting inside because of structural concerns, and the fire continued to flare up. the selectman says the town and board of directors has been involved in a dispute over back taxes and just last week the town voted to begin the deeding process to take this building. the fire marshal is on scene, we'll bring you updates. josh: breaking news now involving iran. the pentagon says the crew members from two navy vessels are being held by iranian authorities, but they say tehran has promised to return the crew and their boats. all this started as the vessels moved between kuwait and bahrain, one of the boats ran aground because of mechanical trouble. they and the 10 crew members were picked up by iran and the pentagon says secretary of state john kerry is now personally involved with iran's foreign minister negotiating the crew's release. we'll keep you posted. jean: and we'll see if the situation in iran affects president obama's final state of

child of his former girlfriend, jessica linscott. >> the defendant is a very violent person and he could committed some very violent acts, unspeakable acts against a 3-year-old child and he deserves every day of his sentence. reporter: dow claimed that linscott should not have been allowed to testify that he physically abused her. but the supreme court ruled that the value of the testimony explaining why linscott delayed reporting the abuse for child and lied to police outweighed any prejudice. >> he strangled her numerous times, he pulled her hair, he dropped her down the stairs. he literally held her life in his hand. so she was afraid of him, and the jury needed to understand that so they could understand why she would have failed to protect her child. reporter: dow also argued that the trial judge erred in allowing a domestic violence expert to testify. but the supreme court rejected that, saying the judge did give instructions to the jury about

driving this morning, and now in. but some places are still on alert for snow squalls that could bring up to another inch of snow. for the very latest, let's go to mike haddad. mike: same system, as you mentioned, most of the snow we snow. but there will be a couple of squalls between 6:00 and 9:30, maybe 10:00 where we got most of our accumulating snow. newfound lake today, filtered sun early, then the cloud rolling in through the course of the day. find light snow fall right now. but you can clearly see even though the sun has set out there in dublin, snow covered pavement, parking lots, side roads, and the visibility cut down. so there's some steady snow out there in parts of the monadnock region, and that means road conditions will continue to go downhill over the next few hours. temperature wise lining up at or

spots, the exception nashua and manchester right along the coastline. but in the next hour or two as precipitation picks up, any light mix at all will go quickly over to wet snow. and that will tend to grease up the roads quickly. so notice on radar, steady snow from berlin points south through the ossipee area and eastern lakes region, down route 9 '3, man commerce and points west. not all reaching the ground just yet, tomorrows the east of manchester. we are seeing some fine light snow right over manchester and points north and northwest. nothing really sticking to the roads just yet. but again it's a different story back the our south and west through jaffrey up through peterborough and dublin as well. farther to the north, steadier light snow beginning to accumulate as well, back to our west the energy for the storm is getting closer. a very narrow line of squalls moving through central portions of new york state. once it gets close to albany, new york, it will transfer its

we're already seeing signs of an explosive development over southern new england. that will cause the snow to fill in for a short few hours right over new hampshire, giving us a general one to three inch snow tally. so between now and 7:00 or 7:30, that's when we'll start to see the snow picking up. after 9:30 or 10:00, most of that has shifted off to the east, and actual front will work through overnight with a passing snow showers, most of the accumulation after 10:00 him snowfall amounts fairly low, but all it takes is a one to two-inch snowfall to make it slippery out there right through tonight and into the overnight stretch. however, beyond tonight, skies will clear out quickly and temperatures tomorrow, don't go too far. after bottoming out in the mid teens north, they only top off near 19 in the great north woods. lower to mid 20's lakes region through tupper valley and monadnock region, and upper 20's concord points south and southeast.

so for tonight, upper teens north, lower 20's south. any snow that does fall will stick. again it's not a whole lot, but you'll have to do some shoveling, brush it off, an inch or two here or there. keep in mind that early tomorrow morning we're well below freezing, so there could still be slick spots out there. partial clearing in southern new hampshire overnight, while light snow continues up north. a few snow showers in the mountains tomorrow morning, otherwise partly to mostly sunny, windy and cold, thursday some partial sun, could be a few flurries in the mountains, a mix of of sun and clouds friday, fairly nice day. then the next system could be a stronger storm on saturday with snow, maybe a mix in far southern parts of the state. still trying to figure out how that will play out, but a good possibility of some accumulation then. dryer for sunday. josh: could make the patriots game interesting. mike: yes. jean: we'll be watching. josh: we're beginning a special

we start with, what do you consider to be the greatest threat to u.s. national security? and what would you do about it as president? >> i've always put nuclear weapons at the top of my list, because those are truly the most damaging weapons that one can imagine. it's not just worrying about rogue states like north korea, although we have to keep worrying about it or try to prevent the development of nuclear weapons in iran. now we have to worry about these sophisticated terrorists who have been on the hunt for nuclear material for quite some time, and they've been unable to obtain it. but i have no doubt they're going to continue to try. so this is another one of these areas where the united states must lead in coordinating efforts across the globe to identify and to obtain and take

completely as possible, anything that could fall into the wrong hands, and that requires law enforcement, intelligence, military, it requires all of our assets being used. and i would certainly put that on the top of my list. >> well, the security threats evolve and change every day. as you ask me this question now, i would say that the biggest security threat to the united states is the threat posed by isil. isil has demonstrated an ability to strike well beyond the battlefields of syria and iraq, downing the russian airliner, the attacks in lebanon, the attacks in paris. it's obvious that they've now created a safe haven and a degree of sophistication that we need to move against as not only one nation but as one nation in coalition with other nations. that's what i would say is the greatest security threat to the united states today, from isil. >> i think you've got two threats, obviously isis and

great threat. in my view we've got to organize a strong coalition in which muslim troops are on the ground fighting for the soul of islam supported by the united states and other major countries. but the second also, long-term threat to this country in terms of national security is the issue of climate change. if we don't get our act together, you're going to see more floods, more drought, more international instability as people compete for limited natural resources. those are the immediate threat, isis and terrorism, long-term threat global warming. josh: we'll hear from more custody in our next half-hour. you can read where they stand on issues at wmur.com. jean: sentencing for one of the men involved in in fight at an amusement park. josh: the closuring of several macy's stores could be the last

right now, you can see it there on our screen. traffic moving through the snow. here's chief meteorologist mike haddad mike: the snow is accumulating in the lakes region. not yet in the manchester area, but that will change in a little while. 32 about a half-hour ago, now down to 31 in the queen city. that means that the snow will begin to stick once it intensifies. elsewhere to the west and north, all below freezing. so a good chance that any steady snow is beginning to accumulate. you'll notice there's quite a gap in the upper valley, but the doppler radar is struggle to each over the hills to the north ask west concord. and that means there is light snow that's not being detected yet. also notice the area of snow blossoming just off to our south, through a good portion of massachusetts moving into central mass and stretching up

that indicates that the snow will add up to a quick inch or two with an isolated spet gotting close to three. higher amounts in the mountains to the north and east. josh: a mexican official now says it could take more than a year for the drug lord known as el chapo to be extradited to the u.s., and it's possible but not probable that he could end up in new hampshire. andy hershberger has more. reporter: he was once described by the u.s. treasury department as the most powerful drug trafficker in the world. tonight new hampshire is one possible place where el chapo could be prosecuted. the most recent arrest of joaquin el chapo guzman, the reputed head of a cartel and widely regarded as one of the most notorious drug lords in the world, new hampshire is on the

he could be extradited and prosecuted. back in 2009, the local u.s. attorney's office and the f.b.i. launched a drug trafficking investigation that involved el chapo. >> that resulted in some indictments and the arrest of four individuals in spain in 2012. reporter: those four people, one who claimed to be guzman's cousin, were prosecuted in jail. but not guzman. now with his apprehension this week in mexico, it's possible, though highly unlikely, that guzman could be brought to the granite state. >> realistically there are a number of district as cross the country that have indicted him. some of those districts indicted did. cases. reporter: the decision on where guzman may go lies in washington and not with the courts. >> ultimately the people that, they will pick one district for him to be prosecuted in. reporter: the federal prosecutor

because it shows these individuals can be stopped. but its impact on the drug business may not be significant. >> unfortunately, the cartel is a huge business. and this takes off the c.e.o. of the business, but unfortunately i think there are people who are over. reporter: the case now moves to the mexican criminal justice system, and there's no timetable for when guzman could be extradited to the united states. i'm andy hershberger, wmur news 9. josh: thanks. the third member of a vermont family involved with a braun -- a brawl with police at canobie lake park have been sentenced. arrested. perry pled guilty to inciting a riot, he gets 12 months in jail with eight month suspended. manchester's anti-panhandling

according to the aclu which filed a lawsuit over police practices of detaining, dispersing or arresting panhandlers. the lawsuit is being brought on behalf of a veteran who was cite forward disorderly conduct after panhandling. jean: a set of of bills dealing with new hampshire's heroin and fentanyl crisis should be heading to the governor next week. those drugs killed 400 people in our state last year. and today lawmakers hammered out new legislation aimed at treating the crisis. amy coveno is live in the newsroom with more. reporter: jean, the emergency heroin task force met for six weeks at the end of last year. the panel heard from 76 witnesses from substance abuse counselor to people who lost loved ones to first responders. the team of lawmakers took a crash course in the opioid cries and is developed bills to make new hampshire better equipped to take on the enemy and win. >> in order to stem and reverse the tide of this horrible

together, every single day. reporter: testimony in the joint public hearing tuesday kicked off with the governor. lawmakers are expediting a panel of bills aimed at disman l the deadly grip of heroin and fentanyl. >> the fight against addiction is far from over. and we all recognize that there is more work to do. reporter: new laws will add fentanyl to the list of of law. according to the chief medical examiner, 253 deaths were linked to fentanyl last year. heroin alone was connected to 12 deaths. also in the package of legislation, new rules for prescribers, aimed at catching so-called doctor shoppers. >> so from october to the end of december, our state prescribed 648,000 prescription strips for 33 million individual pills. that's just a staggering number,

reporter: that's about 25 pills per new hampshire resident, in three months time. senator sanborn's bill is pushing for 100% compliance from prescribers, to utilize the prescription drug monitoring data base. >> i believe at this point with the opioid epidemic we have today, we should mandate that every doctor check and see what their patients are taking for prescription drugs before they write a new one. reporter: lawmakers say the bills are on track to meet the governor's deadline, they'll go to the floor thursday for a vote and then hopefully head to the governor's desk next week. josh: thanks. still ahead, with all the talk of powerball fever, you might be surprised to hear how much money is left unclaimed by lottery winners. jean: macy's latest round of closures could have a bigger effect than expected, for some malls it's just one of several retailers closing up shop. mike: as the flakes continue to

so generally an inch,. there will be a band of snow squalls that moves through between now and 10:00. then some partial clearing overnight. a windy and chilly wednesday follows, most of the sun in southern new hampshire. then following that for the end of the week it mainly dry thursday, friday, could be a few flurries in the mountains. then more snow likely on saturday. still some time to figure out the exact track on that one, there could be some mixing in southern new hampshire and more evening. right now temperatures are all below freezing, except right along the immediate beaches. so if you're traveling north and west of the coastline now and the snow begins to pick up as it has in many spots, keep in mind the road conditions will deteriorate quickly with some slick travel through at least 10:00 or 11:00 tonight. and when the snow end temperatures will be sub

travel early tomorrow morning. right now steady snow filling in in many parts of new hampshire. notice from the monadnock region through the lower merrimack valley, that's where the steadiest snow is flying right now. even though the upper valley and franconia notch are not showing snow, the radar kind of being broken up a little bit, so there is some snow flying there, just not all that intense at this hour. all the energy for the system still back to the west, and it will march on through here morning. between now and then it's going to transfer its energy to an exploding storm off shore. you can see some bands of snow firing up east of of new hampshire, and this is where the jackpot will be out of this particular storm, with the highest amounts over central and eastern maine. having said that we will still get our fair share of steady light snow tonight, with those pockets of snow squalls between 6:30 and 9:00 or 9:30. then most of that will lift into

mount washington valley between 9:30 and 10:30 or 11:00 tonight before it races into maine. overnight tonight could be a passing snow shower central, southern new hampshire, lingering snow will fly up north and by early tomorrow morning, the skies with have cleared over hampshire. for your wednesday, gusty wind out of the northwest, driving more snow across the mountains, but a lot of sunshine in central and southern new hampshire. as for snow totals again, not all that much. but this is all it takes, one to three inches between now and about midnight, slightly higher amounts in the mount washington valley and points north. tonight again snow will wind down late this evening, partial clearing in southern new hampshire overnight tonight. tomorrow it's a windy and cold wednesday, flurries or snow showers in the mountains, partial sun thursday and friday. there's the next chance of snow on saturday, much more on that at 6:00. josh: back now to commitment
