week, but not all students are being required to take them. this new initiative is raising eyebrows for some parents. the district calls it competency recovery days. allowing students who ha reached a certain level to take time off. some students in bedford, will next week. district officials have decided classes don' t need to show up, or take any midterm exams. >> if a stud passing their class, that a teacher can wave the midterm. shelley: it' s a controia plan called comptency recovery days. bedford high school will be adjusting their normal class sche. n so that classes will only be held for students who need extra help. >> the work that' s going to be happening with teachers and students academically, that' s going to be for students who have not yet mastered those key skills. and that' s really what competency recovery is all about. shelley some parents we spoke to : like the idea of kids getting cleared of midterms. >> i think it' s a great idea for

take another one. shelley other parents think it' s : in the best interest of kids, who are struggling. >> they' re falling behind, it' s a good chance for them to catch up before it gets too late. shelley still, other parents : told us off camera, they just don' t like the idea at all. superintendent mcgee has heard from them, but he says many come around, once he explains the district' s goal. >> when we take the time to explain what it typically is like and how it isn' t that different. and also our intention is to help students who haven' t mastered those skills yet get there, we get a pretty good reception from parents who have asked the question. shelley: students who have been excused from class at bedford high school next week can l come in to work on projects, or communitservice. tom: just over the border in methuen, massachusetts illness is closing a school morrto. methuen police say timony grammar school will be closed because ofug.to as many as 200 students and staff have called out sick.
