timeline. mike: a fast mover, in and out of here in about 10-12 hours but a real mess for new hampshire during that time. dropping down into the gold coast coast states where the next storm is brewing, quite a bit of heavy rain developing in and around new orleans and south and west. that' s the moisture that will be rushing up the coast tomorrow afternoon and evening and eventually making its way into new hampshire. seasonably chilly, teens and low 20' s but as the storm builds in from the south, there is not a lot of arctic air to the north. the rain will be accompanied by some miles temperatures. the have to go to the north and west of concord to get in on some measurable snow early in the event. how much snow to expect and much more in a few minutes.

tonight, the republican presidential candidates faced off for the first time in the new year. this time, the candidates were in south carolina, and the stage was a little less crowded. wmur' s jean mackin joins us with the highlights of the primetime debate that just wrapped up. jean: this debate featured fewer candidates on the main stage featuring seven republicans tonight. the focus was the economy, domestic and international policy but the candidates also had laser focus on each other, and hillary clinton. the republicans on stage in agreement on one issue. >> the next commander in chief is standing on this stage. jean but donald trump challenged : ted cruz to prove he' s qualified because he was born in canada to an american mother. >> if i win i choose him as a vp candidate and the dems sue

wmur news9. tom: as has become tradition during this primary, there was also another debate earlier tonight. three of the lower-polling candidates met in that debate. carly fiorina, mike huckabee, and rick santorum criticized the administration' s stance on refugees, guns, and the economy. >> we can not allow refugees to enter this country unless we can adequately vet them and we know we can' t. >> what the president keeps pushing are ideas that have have stopped san bernardino, sandy hook. >> this president has done more to take jobs away from the hard working people who are struggling the most. was invited to this debate after failing to qualify for the prime-time one, but he refused to participate. paul held a twitter town hall instead. democrats are up next. the 3 democratic candidates will debate sunday night in south carolina. that airs on nbc.

two weeks in iowa the last debate before the iowa caucuses. that airs on fox news channel. shelley: vermont senator bernie sanders spent this evening just miles away from his home state, speaking to students at dartmouth college. the democratic presidential candidate held a town hall and picked up an endorsement from a senator from massachusetts. our stephanie woods joins us live from hanover. stephanie: hundreds of hanover residents in dartmouth students feel the burn. others are little more dubious. >> he' s not a compromiser, and he takes a really hard line on things. and that' s awesome, but in a polarized congress where no one wants to work with either side, i don' t see him making a lot of friends by saying, ' this is what i' m going to do, and i' m not going to budge on it. stephanie on thursday more than : 1400 dartmouth students

believers lined up to hear senator bernie sanders speak. issac was first in line and is leaning toward the new hampshire primary frontrunner but he still has questions. >> the ones that resonate with me most are higher education and the environment. so i at a unique position in my am life and i just want to make sure i' m making the right decision. >> now the fossil fuel industry is more important than their short-term profits. stephanie sanders spoke of his : political revolution, which he says he will achieve as president by raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour making public colleges and universities tuition-free and creating a single-payer health care system. reporters asked how the government would find the money to provide health care for nearly every u.s. citizen and if it would raise taxes. >> i hope everyone understands

kids who are doing well in their classes don' t need to show up, or take any midterm exams. >> if a student is passing their class, that a teacher can wave the midterm. shelley: it' plan called comptency recovery days. bedford high school will be schedule next week. so that classes will only be held for students who need extra help. s going to be happening with teachers and students academically, that' going to be for students who have not yet mastered those key skills. and that' s really what competency recovery is all about. shelley some parents we spoke to : like the idea of kids getting cleared of midterms. >> i think it' s a great idea for the kids who really studied and have great grades don' t have to take another one. shelley other parents think it' s : in the best interest of kids, who are struggling. >> they' re falling behind, it' s a good chance for them to catch up before it gets too late. shelley still, other parents : told us off camera, they just don'

18 so taxes will be due for those states on tuesday. investment bank goldman sachs has reached a five billion dollar settlement over mortgages. shelley: it' s part of a federal and state investigation into the role goldman played in the sale of mortgages in the years leading into the housing bubble crisis. goldman is one of the last banks to settle with regulators for its role in the financial crisis. an effort to impeach maine governor paul lepage failed today. the republican governor was accused of using influence to pressure a charter school operator into rescinding a job offer to democratic house speaker mark eves. his critics weren' t able to get enough support to require a vote on an independent investigation that could have led to impeachment over his alleged abuse of power. tom: the new hampshire coalition against domestic and sexual violence has received a grant as

challenge. the coalition raised more than $40,000 to help wit security plans for survivors. new hampshire' s senators presented a check for an additional from the challenge' s $3000 organizer. this issue is very important, for safety and security until we end sexual and domestic violence. >> it' s something that crosses all demographic lines, affects something we' ve got to work together to address. tom: nationwide, the purple purse challenge has raised more than $3 million the governor has submitted her $10-year transportation plan for the state. the plan completes i-93 widening, accelerates the exit 4a project in londonderry, replaces hampton river bridge; and allows commuter rail from concord to boston to advance. federal funding will help repair red-listed bridges and begin the first phase of widening route 106 in front of the new hampshire motor speedway.
