hayley: now on "daybreak," burst of heavier snow as an arctic cold front moves through. how much more to expect and forecast for the week ahead. sean: live pictures from hooksett. if you are heading out extra time. we'll have an update on the roads coming up. erin: more than a dozen people of homeless after flames ripped through an apartment building in north conway. the good news is no one was hurt. sean: the race for the democratic nomination is neck in neck. they squared off for one more debate before voters start casting ballots.

hampshire like we do. now wmur "news 9 erin: good morning, new hampshire. snow is falling in many areas. speeds have been reduced on the highways. i'm erin fehlau. i'm sean mcdonald. got to be careful. a lot of kids have the day off. some don't. the snow is coming down. hayley: a lot of people may try to go north to go skiing. be careful. the snow is going to pick up in intensity with the wind. you can see in manchester we have light snowfalling and 25 degrees. the heaviest snow has been confined to the south eastern corner by the seacoast and south of manchester where there's already a couple of inches that have accumulated. as we go through the next few hours, you see the bands up in vermont. those are snow squalls

state which will make it in to new hampshire in the next little while. they are increase visibility and cause more accumulation. we're all in the 20's. 25 in manchester and nashua. the heaviest snow will be in south eastern new hampshire. a good two to four inches there. with the snow squalls, we can easily get another couple of inches. the winds continue to be gusty. more on the forecast in a couple of minutes. for a look at the morning drive here in the granite state, we're davidson. good morning, deb. deb: good morning, hayley. right now if you are starting your early morning commute or traveling up, do so with extreme caution. all of the major roads covered. the crews are out. right now basically the center lane is the passable lane. on 93 and 293 the speed miles an hour. if you work in the

completely snow covered. that's 30 miles an hour. the d.o.t. is out clearing the roads. do allow ample time as you are heading out this this report is brought donuts. from the traffic network, i'm deb erin: all right. thank you. here are some live now. this is from the common man camera there along 93 in windham. you can see some of the plow crews trying to clear the way for people. sean: it is going to be a busy 12 hours. ray brewer is keeping an eye on the road conditions. how is it looking? ray: well, not too bad. it's been a while since we've been here north of the hooksett tolls. not that i want to jinx myself for the remainder of the winter season. we have a light snowfalling. erin mentioned the

we ran in to plows here on our journey north. they are also plowing in tandem. if you get caught behind some of the plows, be prepared, you are going to be doing 20-25 miles an hour for a while. we would remind you don't try to pass the plows. that can be dangerous. the snow hasn't started to accumulate much. as hayley was mentioning, we're expecting some snow squalls later on. it is a very light snow right now. so that means that the winds that are expected later will be able to pick it up and really whip that snow around, impacting visibility. that's the situation right now here in hooksett. ray brewer, wmur news 9. erin: thank you, ray. investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a fire that forced more than a dozen people from their homes. when firefighters

inn apartments shortly before 9:00, they found heavy fire on the second floor. there's significant fire damage on the second floor and smoke and water damage throughout the five-unit building. no one was hurt. the red red cross is helping the displaced residents. a remember of the budget committee in hampstead is apologizing. on friday, committee chair jorge mesa-tejada was discussing school safety when he discussed how to do a school shooting. stupidly, i used excessively graphic language. it is inexcuseive. -- inexcusable.

three others are in germany. 30-year-old matt trevi trevi-thick is back in new hampshire this morning. he was held for 40 days. >> it's been difficult. we had a lot of support. we were able to get through it. we appreciate all of the help that the u.s. government has done on this. they've been great. erin: trevi-thick was studying language. he lost weight in prison. he says he's looking forward to eating some hamburgers and getting some iced coffee. the u.s. embassy says several americans are missing in iraq. they have not identified the missing people. media reports say that three americans were kidnapped by militias in baghdad. they are working with iraqi officials to track down the missing people and find those who are responsible. sean: a child is safe after falling from a ski lift at waterville valley. officials say a girl was riding the lift with her

erin: good news for bald eagle population in vermont. they accounted 36 eagles during the annual count earlier this month. that's down from the record numbers. it is up dramatically from the early 1980's when there were only a handful of bald eagles in the green mountain state. they are closing in on recovery goals. that's great news for the bald eagle. sean: it is. if you've ever seen one of these, they are big, 5:13. coming up, a 9-1-1 dispatcher is in trouble after missing an emergency call. what she admits she was doing instead of answering the phone. erin: dozens of people went flying down the hillside. the marco rubio. he ran for senate saying

erin: a 911 dispatcher has been reprimanded after failing to answer a call.

after having a seizure in a doctor's office. someone called 911 and never got through because they were ordering pizza. police say there was only one dispatcher on duty. the man who passed out has since recovered. despite high surf, search efforts continue this morning for 12 marines missing after two helicopters crashed off of the coast of hawaii. one of the marines is from hingham, massachusetts. crews from a variety of agencies have been searching since late thursday when a civilian saw it disappear followed by a fireball. they think the super stallion helicopters collided, but they can't say for sure. sean: all right. sorry about this, the run at the top is over for "stars: the force awakens." it fell to third. the new comedy "ride along two" starring kevin hart and ice cube

hockey players from all over the country and canada spent the weekend in maine for a tournament. this was the six year for the international fire, police, and military games. men and women in uniform spent the weekend raising money. because it is run by volunteers, all of the proceeds go to the hospital. by the way, the fire department team from cal gary, canada won the largest division. check this out, it is all about slebogan. people raced on the steerable ones invented by bill in claremont. we featured him. they tried to break the speeds. eric says conditions weren't good enough because there wasn't enough snow on the steepest part of the track. it looks fun regardless. but today main they will get enough snow. erin: too bad today isn't snow

hayley: there's a fresh now. claremont as we just mentioned. you can see the roads there are snow covered. same thing is true in portsmouth and market take it easy. that's the biggest thing we can tell you if you are heading out despite the fact there's not a lot of snow. most places is a good one to three inches. there's more to come. you see this line right about there from burlington down in to that's an arctic cold front. it has gusty winds and very strong snow qualities. these are on the way too as well as the snow we've had in the meantime by the seacoast. where you see the darker shades of the white colors or purple colors. that's where the snow has picked up. in places like newton and in to kingston, you get the quick burst of snow. it can reduce visibility and give you a half to an inch of snowfall

snow and where it continues to be the strongest is where we have the winter weather advisory by the national weather service. that goes until 1:00 this afternoon. in the meantime, we'll have these heavy snow bursts or snow squalls passing through because of this cold front. on the other side of the cold front, you guessed it, some much colder air. i want to show you how cold. temperatures at the moment in the 20's over lebanon. look out to the west. chicago three below. it is 12 below in the twin cities this morning. this cold bubble of air on its way for the whole northeast. that means over the next chilly air. these are the highs. most of us won't get out of the 20's as we go through the next five days. below the average high for this time in january which is about 30 degrees. the other story today is that the winds are really going to start to pick up. at the moment, nothing really going on across the state.

mid-morning, the winds are going to howl. it is going to pick up the snow since it is so light. visibility will be reduced and maybe even some of the ski areas because of how gusty the winds will be. up near 30 to 40 miles per hour. with wind it makes it feel all the more colder too. here's how things go. we'll have the snow showers and snow squalls through the morning. the worst of it done by noon. there will be some snow showers remaining in the northern elevations and higher elevations and northern part of the state through the afternoon. then tomorrow mostly sunny. it is going to be cold up in the northern part of the state. again some snow showers in the mountains. we're pretty much done for snow for the rest of at least the next few days after today. here's what my thinking is for additional snow accumulation. one to three from the monadnock region in to concord, meredith, and ossipee. some higher amounts in new hampshire in to the

if you are doing skiing and boarding today, snow showers windy and cold. over the next few days, highs in the 20's. then, guys, watching next weekend. i got to say if some of our computer models are accurate in what they are saying, we could have a big one on saturday in to sunday. so it is something that we're going to be watching more closely. erin: we've been watching. hayley: i know we've had little ones. this could be significant. sean: top stories with ray brewer. ray: here in hooksett, there's light snowfalling. we've seen plows out. it appears there's a plow that's broken down here north of the hooksett tolls here, especially if you are heading out on the secondary roads. you are going to want to allow some extra time. plow crews are out. bear in mind they are doing tandem plowing. if you get stuck behind some of the plow crews, you are only going to go about 20 miles an hour.

>> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now wmur "news 9 daybreak." sean: good morning on this mlk day, monday, january 18th. we're waking up to snowfall out there. 24 degrees, in fact. we're setting ourselves up for a very cold week. erin: it is a little tricky driving out there. just be careful on the roads this morning. we want to get to the top stories right now. an hour's long standoff in lancaster came to an end when the suspect was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. a hiker had to be dug out of the snow yesterday after getting

while passing through tuckerman ravine. if you are heading out on the roads this morning, you are going to want to be cautious. ice and potential snow squalls could make for a tricky commute. sean: this is one of the rides to work where i got to the first turn, i said i might take it slow. you never know when you are going to fish tail. hayley: my driveway goes up. i was hoping i made it. it took two tries, but i did. we already have a couple of inches in windham, salem, seabrook, hampton, and portsmouth as well. across the full state we're all going to see snow continuing this morning around maybe even some snow squalls with heavier winds and stronger winds and heavier snow as we go through the morning. by the time we get to noon, most of us are going to start to see some big time improvement with the sun peeking out. temperatures are going down all throughout the day with the winds which are going to be cranking, sean, it is

like single digits or below zero as we go through the next few hours. sean: if you are going out skiing or tubing, you want the hand warmers. hayley: the face cover and mask. fortunately you are heading out, i'll show you a look on the roads. you can see plow trucks. hayley: a lot of people heading southbound. for a look at the morning drive, we're joined live by deb davidson. good morning, deb. deb: good morning. right now all of the major roads in the state of new hampshire are completely snow covered. the crews are out there clearing them up. the speed limit throughout the state has been reduced to about 45 miles an hour. please do adhere to that to stay safe for everyone. if you are commute on interstate 89, we are seeing some slow going in the hopkinton area and also at the bow junction. travel is slow going. 93 is a slow ride from north of concord down to the hooksett tolls at

an hour to an hour and a do their route. if the snow is falling at more than an inch an hour, that means you are going to encounter those snow covered roads. likely we've been pretty lucky here in hooksett as i said. it is just a light snow that's falling. maybe we have about an inch total in accumulation. here. once again you want to allow yourself plenty of time if you are heading out. this morning we catch a as sean and erin mention, a lot of people do have the day off for the holiday. reporting live in hooksett, ray brewer. erin: thank you. firefighters spent the night on the scene of the fire. these flames broke out shortly before 9:00 last night on a garage. firefighters had to drag hoses about a half a mile in order to battle the fire. they were able to keep the flames from spreading to the attached house. no one was hurt. the garage was destroyed.

dead last night following an hours-long standoff with police. it started around 2:30 when police were called to the home at 32 prospect street for a report of shotted fired. a woman said she was leaving the home with her two kids when 35-year-old jeremiah gillen fired at her car hitting the hood. people living in the immediate area were evacuated while they tried to get gillen to surrender. several hours later a robot was sent in to the house. he was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. erin: we are following a developing story in nashua. police are investigating a stabbing. two people were stabbed shortly before 11:00 last night. the victims' injuries are not life threatening. there's no threat to the public. it does not appear to be random. a nashua man is accused of stabbing another man in hudson. ronald russell stabbed a man in the torso. the victim was found on

his wound is non-life threatening. russell is scheduled to be arraigned on a charge of first-degree assault. sean: a hiker had to be rescued after getting caught in an avalanche. it happened at tuckerman ravine. they say the man had to be dug out of the snow by other hikers and emergency crews there. it is not clear if he is hiking alone or with a group. the man was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. the mt. washington avalanche center posted a bulletin over the weekend warning of shifting snow in the area. erin: the university of new hampshire is now joining other schools in banning hover boards on campus. they say they are concerned about the safety of the devices which have been known to catch fire. the u.s. consumer product safety commission has investigated 28 hover board related fires in 19 states. so far more than 30 universities and three major airlines have

sean: today is martin luther king jr. day. 50 years ago jonathan was inspired to become more actively involved in the civil rights movement. he traveled to alabama in an effort to assist with voter registration. in 1965, daniels died while trying to save a teenager. a local white man aimed a shotgun and he stepped in front of her. the intended victim, rudy sales, was 17 at the time. >> i heard a shot. and it was jonathan. he shot jonathan. jonathan never made a sound. i think he was dead instantly. the collective grief of losing jonathan bound us together in the county. and instead of retreating because of

forward. >> sales traveled to new hampshire to honor reverend daniels on the 50th anniversary of his murder. erin: a homeless man is trying to be reunited with his family. on sunday he finally got a chance to talk with his step-sister. the two rejected thanks to a project called miracle messages. we first brought you the story in october when kevin adler recorded a short video of dale in hopes of making a connection with his family online. erin bissonnette looked up the story and realized it was her step-father. >> i was kind of out of place. i found out i got a new niece. erin: erin says she is in disbelief because she thought he had passed away. she lives in groveton. the two plan to meet

sean: a massachusetts family is asking for help finding the person that attacked their beloved dog. >> if they did this to my dog, whose dog is next? sean: a home owner saw two young men beating the dog named abbie with a stick in her own yard. abbie barking. severe, she had to be vet. >> i think i was numb. i just can't imagine that anybody would do anything to a dog come in to my yard and hurt her. sean: abbie is now recovering at home. she's still on pain medication and needs special care. police say the attack appears to be an isolated incident. erin: when it comes to taking selfies, people in india appear to be at a greater risk of death than anywhere else in the world. reports show that half of the 27 selfie deaths that occurred worldwide last year happened in

mumbai police say they recently identified more than a dozen no-selfie zones after three young girls were swept in to the arabian sea while taking selfies. other tragedies include seven people who died while taking a selfie on a boat that tipped over and three college students who were killed while taking a selfie in front of an oncoming train. sean: oh my goodness. a new study shows that having good relationship with friends and family boosts your mental and physical health. researchers found that the more socially connected a person is the lower their blood pressure is down the road. adolescents who have a lot of friends are less likely to become researchers say that when people are socially isolated they may have higher levels of stress hormones resulting in more health problems. erin: turns now to sports this morning, tom brady and peyton manning will meet in the afc championship game next sunday in denver. it will be the fifth playoff meeting between the two future hall of

it shutdown 93. be very careful today. a similar setup. we have the winds and also the strong snow squalls about to move through with an arctic cold front. a big heads up to any travelers across the state. we have snow on the ground and on the roadways from the snow that we've had overnight too. there's sanbornton. be very careful this morning. hopefully you are jest traveling to the kitchen to grab another cup of coffee. especially at the seacoast. that's where we've been watching some of the heavier bands of snowfall. look at the darker shades of the purple colors here from newton to kingston to exeter. when you get in to the some of the heavier bands, especially in essex county, you can easily get half to an inch of snowfall within an hour or so.

weather advisory that's been posted mainly for the south eastern corner there of new hampshire until 1:00 in the afternoon. across the rest of the state expecting a wide swath of one to three inches of snowfall. certainly that's not a lot. even a little bit can make the roads very slippery, of course. up north in the mountains, higher elevations. good two to four inches with some of the higher peaks recording more than that. certainly by the seacoast, you are winning the battle of getting the most snow today with two to four inches expected by about noontime. temperatures we're all in the 20's. it is in the teens up in the great north woods. the temperatures will actually continue to slide downward as we go through the day instead of going up because of cold air just coming right down out of canada throughout the day. visibility is an issue. it is not because of fog, but rather the snowfalling and getting blown around a little bit too. be careful of that where your travels take you today. the winds aren't a

they are going to be afternoon. look at this. this is 11:00 in the morning. there will be some wind gusts near 30 or 40 miles per hour as we progress. not only will it loft any of the light snow reducing visibility, it is going to make it feel so cold as this colder air comes down out of temperatures fall day. so the timing of the snow, we'll have a few rounds of it, especially this morning and then things start to lighten up with the exception of up in the mountains where it lasts longer. i'll see some sunshine through the rest of the afternoon and overnight clearing skies. tomorrow is going to be a bright day. sunny but so cold. temperatures up north will barely crack ten degrees. in the southern part of the state, it will barely crack 20. very chilly temperatures on the horizon here. even overnight. temperatures in the single digits. quiet weather after this morning's snow. lots of sunshine for the next few days.
