hampshire like we do. now wmur "news 9 erin: good morning, new hampshire. snow is falling in many areas. speeds have been reduced on the highways. i'm erin fehlau. i'm sean mcdonald. got to be careful. a lot of kids have the day off. some don't. the snow is coming down. hayley: a lot of people may try to go north to go skiing. be careful. the snow is going to pick up in intensity with the wind. you can see in manchester we have light snowfalling and 25 degrees. the heaviest snow has been confined to the south eastern corner by the seacoast and south of manchester where there's already a couple of inches that have accumulated. as we go through the next few hours, you see the bands up in vermont. those are snow squalls

hayley: there's a fresh now. claremont as we just mentioned. you can see the roads there are snow covered. same thing is true in portsmouth and market take it easy. that's the biggest thing we can tell you if you are heading out despite the fact there's not a lot of snow. most places is a good one to three inches. there's more to come. you see this line right about there from burlington down in to that's an arctic cold front. it has gusty winds and very strong snow qualities. these are on the way too as well as the snow we've had in the meantime by the seacoast. where you see the darker shades of the white colors or purple colors. that's where the snow has picked up. in places like newton and in to kingston, you get the quick burst of snow. it can reduce visibility and give you a half to an inch of snowfall

snow and where it continues to be the strongest is where we have the winter weather advisory by the national weather service. that goes until 1:00 this afternoon. in the meantime, we'll have these heavy snow bursts or snow squalls passing through because of this cold front. on the other side of the cold front, you guessed it, some much colder air. i want to show you how cold. temperatures at the moment in the 20's over lebanon. look out to the west. chicago three below. it is 12 below in the twin cities this morning. this cold bubble of air on its way for the whole northeast. that means over the next chilly air. these are the highs. most of us won't get out of the 20's as we go through the next five days. below the average high for this time in january which is about 30 degrees. the other story today is that the winds are really going to start to pick up. at the moment, nothing really going on across the state.

mid-morning, the winds are going to howl. it is going to pick up the snow since it is so light. visibility will be reduced and maybe even some of the ski areas because of how gusty the winds will be. up near 30 to 40 miles per hour. with wind it makes it feel all the more colder too. here's how things go. we'll have the snow showers and snow squalls through the morning. the worst of it done by noon. there will be some snow showers remaining in the northern elevations and higher elevations and northern part of the state through the afternoon. then tomorrow mostly sunny. it is going to be cold up in the northern part of the state. again some snow showers in the mountains. we're pretty much done for snow for the rest of at least the next few days after today. here's what my thinking is for additional snow accumulation. one to three from the monadnock region in to concord, meredith, and ossipee. some higher amounts in new hampshire in to the

an hour to an hour and a do their route. if the snow is falling at more than an inch an hour, that means you are going to encounter those snow covered roads. likely we've been pretty lucky here in hooksett as i said. it is just a light snow that's falling. maybe we have about an inch total in accumulation. here. once again you want to allow yourself plenty of time if you are heading out. this morning we catch a as sean and erin mention, a lot of people do have the day off for the holiday. reporting live in hooksett, ray brewer. erin: thank you. firefighters spent the night on the scene of the fire. these flames broke out shortly before 9:00 last night on a garage. firefighters had to drag hoses about a half a mile in order to battle the fire. they were able to keep the flames from spreading to the attached house. no one was hurt. the garage was destroyed.

dead last night following an hours-long standoff with police. it started around 2:30 when police were called to the home at 32 prospect street for a report of shotted fired. a woman said she was leaving the home with her two kids when 35-year-old jeremiah gillen fired at her car hitting the hood. people living in the immediate area were evacuated while they tried to get gillen to surrender. several hours later a robot was sent in to the house. he was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. erin: we are following a developing story in nashua. police are investigating a stabbing. two people were stabbed shortly before 11:00 last night. the victims' injuries are not life threatening. there's no threat to the public. it does not appear to be random. a nashua man is accused of stabbing another man in hudson. ronald russell stabbed a man in the torso. the victim was found on

his wound is non-life threatening. russell is scheduled to be arraigned on a charge of first-degree assault. sean: a hiker had to be rescued after getting caught in an avalanche. it happened at tuckerman ravine. they say the man had to be dug out of the snow by other hikers and emergency crews there. it is not clear if he is hiking alone or with a group. the man was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. the mt. washington avalanche center posted a bulletin over the weekend warning of shifting snow in the area. erin: the university of new hampshire is now joining other schools in banning hover boards on campus. they say they are concerned about the safety of the devices which have been known to catch fire. the u.s. consumer product safety commission has investigated 28 hover board related fires in 19 states. so far more than 30 universities and three major airlines have
