now, wmur news9 tonight. tom: from north to south it' s a bitter cold night across the granite state. you' re looking live at colebrook, where it is about seven degrees right now and and portsmouth, where it is good evening, i' m tom griffith. only 17 degrees. good evening, i' m tom griffith. while the thermometer certainly reads cold, it doesn' t even include the wind chill factor. let' s get started with chief meteorologist mike haddad. mike: it' s a combination of wind and cold temperatures that provides that wind chill. in some cases right now it is subzero. these are steady wind speed and 6-16 in central and southern new hampshire. a little about that and whitefield and a hurricane atop mount washington with wins over 75 miles per hour. the actual temperature down to

you factor in the temperature and wind and it feels like subzero in jaffrey, concord, whitefield, berlin, and atop mount washington where deals like 60 below. take a look at all the frigid air off to the north and west. when direction between now and wednesday, you guessed it, out of the northwest. that will drive in the frigid air through that time frame little bit. what does that mean for the rest of the week and the weekend? we will look at all of that straight ahead. tom: a climber from plymouth says he' s lucky to be alive after surviving an avalanche on mount washington. officials from the white mountain national forest say a 100-foot-wide avalanche tore through tuckerman ravine yesterday afternoon, sweeping 6 skiers and climbers down the mountain. our stephanie woods spoke to one of the survivors and tells us the lessons he says he learned. tom: he has been rock and ice climbing for nearly a decade but says nothing could have prepared

knocked him off his feet yesterday in tuckerman' s ravine. pretty scary. hopefully nothing i will ever experience again. re looking back. it was early season, there was not a general avalanche warning so i thought i did not need my avalanche gear. snow rangers, who said the snow was dangerously high above the the snow last broke. stayed below the crown, but he climbed above, triggering the avalanche. >> i looked up just enough in time to see them getting washed off their feet. i managed to yell out avalanche, and before i knew, it threw me backwards. i crashed into my climbing

for what seemed like forever. stephanie: swartz says snow filled his eyes and mouth as he tuckerman' s ravine. >> i had a lot of conscious thought about, ok it can stop i can self-arrest, i' ll put my ice ax out and try to right myself, and it was completely useless. stephanie: swartz finally stopped, slamming into his friend. once he saw his other friend was safe he rushed to the aid of a skier from maine who had been injured in the avalanche. as a member of androscoggin valley search and rescue he stabilized the skier' s leg until help arrived. >> knowledge is power and it can save your life. stephanie: ironically a class was next to the chute when the avalanche happened and helped survivors. a climber from que bec and a skier from maine were treated for minor injuries. swartz and his friend were not hurt.

tom: at least nine people have died and avalanches on mount washington in the past two decades including in march of , 2013, when a man ice climbing on his own was swept down huntington ravine. in commitment 2016, republican frontrunner donald trump arrived in new hampshire this afternoon for what' s become his signature campaign event a large rally featuring a speech by trump and a few audience questions. breaking from the usual trump' s , daughter ivanka made a brief wmur' s adam sexton was there too and joins us from the site of the rally, concord high school. adam: donald trump continues to be the biggest draw in the republican field. today he packed hundreds into the concord high gym. the home of the crimson tide posted the man who could hit the nation like the synonymy if he

up at newfound lake, the skies parcel it clear that another band of snow showers worked on through and some partial clearing later on in the day. the big story through a good part of wednesday, that means wind chills tonight and tomorrow morning and tomorrow evening could be running below zero in many spots and not a lot warmer during the rest of tuesday and wednesday. by later wednesday afternoon, the winds abate a little bit and temperatures climb near 30 in southern new hampshire. here comes the weekend. what will that deliver? quite a coastal storm developing morning. the big question will remain through tomorrow night, where will it track and what kind of easter have on new hampshire?

north country. that is basically about it. could be additional light snow on at all in the white mountains and the great north woods into tomorrow evening. the winds are building out of the west northwest and dropping temperatures back tonight in central and southern new hampshire. those winds are quite active and sustained with higher gusts. when you factor in the sustained winds and the current temperature, it feels like subzero all through the great north woods and close to 60 below a top mount washington and zero across southern new hampshire. winds gusting higher than the sustained numbers, anywhere from 20-30 miles per hour and that means the wind chill factor dips even lower for a short time. futurecast paints on quite a few scattered power outages to

still quite breezy on wednesday though not as gusty as we will have out there tomorrow. temperatures a little milder as well. it picks up a little bit on thursday. a lot of colder drifting in from canada and across the plains in the great lakes states. it brings out available moisture in the form of these heavy snow squalls and showers. around here we are tracking flakes up north and outside of that it is dry through the rest overnight tonight near one far north and lower teen south with the windchill factor below zero good part of the night. a blustery and frigid tuesday with temperatures in the low 20' s at best in southern new hampshire. snow showers up north, quite through friday and then we track that storm saturday and early sunday. that' s the window of opportunity
