now, wmur news9 tonight. tom: from north to south it' s a bitter cold night across the granite state. you' re looking live at colebrook, where it is about seven degrees right now and and portsmouth, where it is good evening, i' m tom griffith. only 17 degrees. good evening, i' m tom griffith. while the thermometer certainly reads cold, it doesn' t even include the wind chill factor. let' s get started with chief meteorologist mike haddad. mike: it' s a combination of wind and cold temperatures that provides that wind chill. in some cases right now it is subzero. these are steady wind speed and 6-16 in central and southern new hampshire. a little about that and whitefield and a hurricane atop mount washington with wins over 75 miles per hour. the actual temperature down to

you factor in the temperature and wind and it feels like subzero in jaffrey, concord, whitefield, berlin, and atop mount washington where deals like 60 below. take a look at all the frigid air off to the north and west. when direction between now and wednesday, you guessed it, out of the northwest. that will drive in the frigid air through that time frame little bit. what does that mean for the rest of the week and the weekend? we will look at all of that straight ahead. tom: a climber from plymouth says he' s lucky to be alive after surviving an avalanche on mount washington. officials from the white mountain national forest say a 100-foot-wide avalanche tore through tuckerman ravine yesterday afternoon, sweeping 6 skiers and climbers down the mountain. our stephanie woods spoke to one of the survivors and tells us the lessons he says he learned. tom: he has been rock and ice climbing for nearly a decade but says nothing could have prepared

knocked him off his feet yesterday in tuckerman' s ravine. pretty scary. hopefully nothing i will ever experience again. re looking back. it was early season, there was not a general avalanche warning so i thought i did not need my avalanche gear. snow rangers, who said the snow was dangerously high above the the snow last broke. stayed below the crown, but he climbed above, triggering the avalanche. >> i looked up just enough in time to see them getting washed off their feet. i managed to yell out avalanche, and before i knew, it threw me backwards. i crashed into my climbing

for what seemed like forever. stephanie: swartz says snow filled his eyes and mouth as he tuckerman' s ravine. >> i had a lot of conscious thought about, ok it can stop i can self-arrest, i' ll put my ice ax out and try to right myself, and it was completely useless. stephanie: swartz finally stopped, slamming into his friend. once he saw his other friend was safe he rushed to the aid of a skier from maine who had been injured in the avalanche. as a member of androscoggin valley search and rescue he stabilized the skier' s leg until help arrived. >> knowledge is power and it can save your life. stephanie: ironically a class was next to the chute when the avalanche happened and helped survivors. a climber from que bec and a skier from maine were treated for minor injuries. swartz and his friend were not hurt.

tom: at least nine people have died and avalanches on mount washington in the past two decades including in march of , 2013, when a man ice climbing on his own was swept down huntington ravine. in commitment 2016, republican frontrunner donald trump arrived in new hampshire this afternoon for what' s become his signature campaign event a large rally featuring a speech by trump and a few audience questions. breaking from the usual trump' s , daughter ivanka made a brief wmur' s adam sexton was there too and joins us from the site of the rally, concord high school. adam: donald trump continues to be the biggest draw in the republican field. today he packed hundreds into the concord high gym. the home of the crimson tide posted the man who could hit the nation like the synonymy if he

prompting a passionate plea from one police chief in massachusetts. the gloucester police chief wrote a message to people suffering from addiction on the department' s facebook page saying you are important and worth it. we are not ashamed of you, it' s it' s time. come and get the help. the chief' s post has been shared more than 6,000 times. >> and have people realize that if they got caught up in this and they' re at the point where they can' t make choices anymore that they have a disease and they need intervention. tom back in may, gloucester : launched an amnesty program allow drug users to turn over any illegal drugs, in exchange for treatment and no criminal charges. 375 people have accepted that help. only one has relapsed and died. lawmakers in massachusetts will soon consider a bill requiring drivers to put down their phones. the bill makes it illegal to use hand-held electronic devices or type information into a gps device while driving. the massachusetts state senate

state attended the 32nd annual unity breakfast this morning including governor maggie hassan. she said that we as a state and nation are stronger when no one is excluded from the american dream. our own shelley walcott emceed the breakfast. president obama was among many who marked martin luther king junior day by participating in a community service project. the president and first lady michelle volunteered with the boys and girls club of greater washington today. they filled bags with books for needy children. the mlk day of service encourages americans to help meet needs in their communities. coming up on news 9 tonight. logan employees rallied outside the airport today, calling for higher pay and union organizing rights. the problem that led to a few arrests, but mostly peaceful protest. >> are super packs a luxury or a necessity? a look at the power of money on the campaign trail.

the demonstration reached logan airport. 6 people were arrested for refusing a police order to leave terminal e. the protest itself echoed demonstrations nationwide as workers call for a 15 dollar minimum wage. >> nowadays, it seems that a lot of the airport service workers although they' re working very hard are still having to depend on government assistance. tom: police say they were notified by protest organizers those six members of the group had planned to defy orders ahead of time. they will be arraigned tomorrow for trespassing. as you' ve probably noticed it' s not just candidates who are active this campaign season. there are dozens of ads airing, including here on wmur, from super pacs super political action committees. but just how much are they affecting this primary season? aixa diaz reports from washington. >> in political campaigns, money that cannot go directly to candidates because of campaign contribution limits can go to

middle class person with some good ideas, you need millions and millions of dollars behind you. >> in 2010, the supreme court ruled donors can contribute unlimited amounts of money to groups supporting candidates, as long as the candidates t directly in washington, i' m aixa diaz. the eagles has died. glenn frey died from multiple ailments. he wrote songs like hotel california and life in the fast lane. they went back on the road 14 years at the eagles broke up back in 1980 and with the top touring act. glenn frey was 67 years old. mike: we started off the day with some snow, on average 2-3 inches in spots.

up at newfound lake, the skies parcel it clear that another band of snow showers worked on through and some partial clearing later on in the day. the big story through a good part of wednesday, that means wind chills tonight and tomorrow morning and tomorrow evening could be running below zero in many spots and not a lot warmer during the rest of tuesday and wednesday. by later wednesday afternoon, the winds abate a little bit and temperatures climb near 30 in southern new hampshire. here comes the weekend. what will that deliver? quite a coastal storm developing morning. the big question will remain through tomorrow night, where will it track and what kind of easter have on new hampshire?

north country. that is basically about it. could be additional light snow on at all in the white mountains and the great north woods into tomorrow evening. the winds are building out of the west northwest and dropping temperatures back tonight in central and southern new hampshire. those winds are quite active and sustained with higher gusts. when you factor in the sustained winds and the current temperature, it feels like subzero all through the great north woods and close to 60 below a top mount washington and zero across southern new hampshire. winds gusting higher than the sustained numbers, anywhere from 20-30 miles per hour and that means the wind chill factor dips even lower for a short time. futurecast paints on quite a few scattered power outages to

still quite breezy on wednesday though not as gusty as we will have out there tomorrow. temperatures a little milder as well. it picks up a little bit on thursday. a lot of colder drifting in from canada and across the plains in the great lakes states. it brings out available moisture in the form of these heavy snow squalls and showers. around here we are tracking flakes up north and outside of that it is dry through the rest overnight tonight near one far north and lower teen south with the windchill factor below zero good part of the night. a blustery and frigid tuesday with temperatures in the low 20' s at best in southern new hampshire. snow showers up north, quite through friday and then we track that storm saturday and early sunday. that' s the window of opportunity

the blue devils, 64-62. the celtics entered the night riding a three-game winning streak, hoping to keep it going against a struggling dallas mavericks team, that had lost 4 of it' s last six. but the mavs came out hot tonight. first half, wesley matthews drains a 3 from the corner, 17-2 dallas. then matthews again, three more from the wing. dallas led by as many as 17 in the game. but the celtics chipped away, in transition, avery bradley stops and pops from the baseline, that made it a nine point game. third quarter, isaiah thomas kicks it out to kelly olynyk. the big guy can shoot. he buries a three, boston up four. they ended up going into overtime. a huge three-pointer by dirk nowitzki from the corner. that was pretty much it, the mavericks one 118-113, the final in overtime. the unh women played a home game this afternoon against the black bears from maine.

lauren bodine knocks down a three from the point, 6-2 black bears. she had 11 points. pogue, strong move to back down the defender. aliza simpson, nice look to corinne coia underneath for a pair, unh down 3. wildcats work it to pogue again. she had elizabeth belanger had a 16. team-high 17 for unh, but liz wood led all scorers with 23 and maine wins it 62-52. the patriots travel to denver this weekend to take on peyton manning and the broncos in the afc championship game. it will be the 17th meeting between tom brady and peyton manning, and 5th in the playoffs. manning did not play when the two teams met earlier this season. brock oswieler led denver to a 30-24 overtime win, handing the 10-0 patriots their first loss of the season. much has changed since november though. manning is back, but so, too, are a few of new england' s key players. here are some thoughts from both

tom: when it comes to the quarterbacks playing in both the afc and nfc championship games, tom brady is the odd man out. carson palmer of the arizona cardinals, cam newton of the carolina panthers, and peyton manning of the denver broncos were all the first pick the year they were drafted. tom brady was pick number 199. but who cares about those numbers when you have these. brady has by far the most super bowl rings, four of them, compared to manning' newton and palmer don' t have any.
