let's get over to mike haddad. mike quite a storm in the making right now. we're starting to see a lot of juice building out of the gulf of mexico, ready to turn into that cold air and that means two mid atlantic. notice how quiet it is in the northeast. that northwest in should keep it saturday. notice all the rain, embedded thunderstorms, a lot of energy with this system digging in out of the southern plains. yeah, tapping that moisture out of the gulf of mexico and atlantic. take a look at the areas under advisories, all that white shaded area indicates winter storm watches and warnings, and the pink over d.c., blizzard warnings. 18, 19 states currently under advisories for this monster nor'easter in the making. here's the reason why. not only will we see wind and coastal issues, but two feet plus in portions of west virginia, virginia and maryland between tomorrow and early on

the northern fringe may betterly scrape the northern part of massachusetts, southern new hampshire, we'll take a look at that and the rest of the weekend in a little bit. tom: now to commitment 2016. governor chris christie is answering questions tonight about his decision to stay right here in new hampshire to campaign, despite that storm threat to new jersey. jennifer: adam sexton caught up with christie in boscawen and joins us now live. reporter: you're not going to get chris christie to second guess himself very often if at all. he's very firm about his decision to stay here and campaign in new hampshire, rather than return to new jersey to oversee his state's response to this storm. late this afternoon the governor held a law enforcement roundtable in boscawen hosted by merrimack county sheriff hilliard who endorsed christie. with more than a dozen new jersey counties under blizzard watch, christie says he has his eye on the things but doesn't need to be on the ground there to govern. >> if i feel it's necessary for

job, i'll do it. but i don't necessarily feel at the moment, given what the forecasts are that 8 to 12 inches of snow necessitates getting in a car and going back down to new jersey to sit there and watch on tv what i could watch on tv here and get on my phone and give orders to people who work for me. reporter: in response to a question about the high number of negative mailers targeting his campaign right now, governor christie says he believes those trace back to marco rubio and pro rubio super packs. tonight he called marco rubio the most negative candidate in this race. other republicans are in the state tonight. john kasich will be holding a town hall in wolfeboro and jeb bush will be doing the same in hampton. tom: meanwhile the democratic frontrunner in new hampshire is back in the state tonight. the latest wmur cnn primary poll gives bernie sanders a commanding 27-point lead over

hampshire. as josh mcelveen reports now, clinton wasn't sanders' favorite target today. reporter: sanders has often been accused of going soft on hillary clinton because he pretty much refuses to take direct shots at his democratic rival. but on thursday sanders showed that he can mix it up pretty well, at least when it comes to donald trump. >> thank you. reporter: another big crowd for bernie sanders and on this day the vermont senator was particularly feisty when it came to the republican frontrunner. starting with climate change. >> donald trump's assessment of the situation, being the brilliant scientist that he is, is that climate change is a hoax created by the chinese. reporter: sanders then listed republican candidates that he would beat in november, according to our latest poll, naming everyone from rubio to christie. >> and my favorite, the man who i would love, love, love to run against -- reporter: you see where this is
6:04 pm
>> please, f.b.i., please go after hillary, i want to run against bernie. >> hillary clinton defeats mr. trump by nine points. we defeat him by 23 points. reporter: with a touch of humor the point was made, which he reiterated to us in a one on one interview. >> if democrats want to win the general election, frankly, i think i'm the stronger candidate. reporter: the heavy hammer he uses to address income inequality and big money corruption has given sanders a lot of appeal and if he can translate these crowds to turn out at the polls in iowa and new hampshire, a prediction. >> if we do well in both of those states, i think, my friends, we are looking at one of the great political upsets in the modern history of the united states of america. reporter: despite sanders' lead, his democratic rivals are certainly not giving up the granite state. hillary clinton will be back here tomorrow, while martin o'malley was also in the state hoping to somehow make some noise in this primary.

jennifer: two bills aimed at combating the heroin and opioid crisis in new hampshire are now law. governor hassan says these measures will provide better tools in the fight against addiction. one strengthens the penalties for dealing fentanyl. the other creates a committee to study the use of the overdose reversal drug, narcan. the governor says these are good first steps, but there is more work to do. >> we know we need to continue the work of organizing and streamlining our services, making sure there's access to treatment, and making sure that we're doubling down on the prevention and recovery efforts too. jennifer: governor hassan is still in the process of finding a new drug czar for the state, but he hopes to find one as quickly as possible. tom: salem police trying to identify the man who held up a 7-11 this morning, this surveillance video shows the man entering the store around 1:30 this morning. police say the clerk was

grabbed him by the shoulders and directed him to the registers after emptying both cash registers the man left and store and headed toward a nearby apartment complex. right now two people are under arrest and two others still at large, in connection with a beating and robbery in somersworth. jennifer: police say the victim was set up when he responded to an online ad to meet a woman. jennifer crompton has the details. reporter: according to police, the ad was placed on both craigslist and back page, and offered a woman's personal services. they say a man who responded to it was beaten and robbed when he went to meet the woman, and they believe it may have happened before. somersworth police responded to 240 main street sunday morning, the caller saying he had just been robbed. >> when the officers got there they found he had been beaten severely about the face.

an online ad and arranged to meet this woman there. for personal services. 22-year-old felicia smart of somersworth now in custody. >> he actually walked in the apartment with the girl, she met him outside, she left the room for a second. reporter: that's when she allegedly texted or messaged this man, 29-year-old edwin dorr, who was arraigned on related charges. according to the prosecutor, her message read all set to enter. that's when he and two other men came in a back door. >> it was all fists about the face area, while one of the other individuals took his wallet. reporter: police are looking for joe o'leary and another man not identified. the state claims they have evidence that edwin dorr indicated to someone that posting ads and robbery were things they did on a regular ways is to support themselves. police believe there may be other victims who have chosen to remain quiet. >> probably there have been

tom: a suspicious fire is under investigation in manchester, these are the flames that consumed the west side building early this morning, forcing the evacuation of neighbors. investigators believe it was set because there is no power connected to the building, and when firefighters arrived there was more than one fire burning. a controversial gun bill gets its first hearing in concord. jennifer: this afternoon the committee on commerce and consumer affairs took its first look at whether or not to require gun owners to have liability insurance. opponents say there would be a number of unintended consequences here, beyond what they see as an infringement of second amendment rights. supporters argue it would keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. >> the idea of liability insurance for gun owners is a relatively new idea. it has not been other states,

tom: candidates continue to crisscross the granite state vying to win the hearts and minds of the voter. jennifer: a local photographer is capturing one on one meetings on film. roger gown has hand exhibit in newmarket, entitlessed candidates, connections made and missed. all of the photos capture the intimate off the podium interactions between those running for the highest office and new hampshire citizens. she says he does it from a different perspective. >> the goal of this was candidates connecting or not connecting with voters. so my goal was to try to illustrate that as well as i could.
6:15 pm
technically are maybe better pictures, but they're not as interesting in the sense of the connection. jennifer: you can see more of roger's photos and hear more about the advantages and disadvantages of trying to get the perfect shot while in a wheelchair on primary night, february 9, on "new hampshire chronicle." over the last few months we have had the chance to see more personal side of the presidential candidates, in small gatherings we call candidate cafes. no policy talk, instead the focus is on family and life on the campaign trail. tune in to candidate cafe tonight at 9:00. miegz more sun on the way for tomorrow, but we do are changes developing to our south that we'll keep close tabs on over the next this hours. time lapse at the coast today with the sunshine looks fairly pleasant, but that breeze is still quite active. so even

to the norm, it did feel cold we are the wind, but right at seasonable levels considering it is late january. dry, breezy, through friday. chilly as well. that nor'easter certainly tracking to our south, as has been the case for the past three days. so a consistent track is always a good thing in terms of confidence in the forecast going ahead. having said that, still above 48, about 48 hours away from where the northern end will barely brush the southern parts of new hampshire. so it does bear some watching. there could be slight shifts in the track, a little farther north, could bring a light accumulation of snow into southern new hampshire. but not for tonight. that breeze out of the northwest, from 10 to 20 miles per hour. teens and lower to mid 20's, again very close to the norm for this time of year, and the win chills are reflecting that wind issue, on average feels like single digits north and west of manchester and a little above that to the south and east. as for the wind gusts, on average about 20 to 25. back to the west nothing being reported, that means the gusts
6:17 pm
which is good news. and with the winds going a little lighter tonight, is there a slight chance we could start to see a little bit of light film of ice forming up there on the big lakes. still no ice to be had on winnipesaukee, very odd as we aapproach the late part of january. fair skies, breezy cold tonight, single numbers on average concord north and west, a bit love that south and east. the cold air has penetrated all the way into the deep south. contrasting that with warm air through the gulf of mexico, there are severe thunderstorms developing in the deep south, at the same time on the northern edge as far south as portions of arkansas and tennessee, snow out of this system. take a look right now, over the top of the cloud cover here, a lot of action to the south. and that storm making its way towards the mid atlantic region, bumping into the cold air. for tonight and tomorrow, sunshine, statewide, clear skies tonight, with the sunny sky to follow on friday. and then here comes that

morning. that's when this monster nor'easter to our south will make its closest run at new hampshire, steadiest snow likely over southern parts of new england and there's a slight chance we could get a dusting of snow in extreme southern zones. as for the brunt of this storm, clearly hitting to our south, d.c., baltimore, philadelphia, and points south, into the virginias, take a look at kentucky, good part of tennessee, into north carolina, all of this white shaded area indicates winter storm warnings, blizzard warnings up for d.c. and points north, northeast. with the wind and two feet of snow, that will certainly do the trick. also notice the northern edge of that light blue, just barely scrapes into northern parts of massachusetts, southeastern new hampshire, so can't rule out a few flakes of snow saturday night, but having said that, a good shot that we do stay dry right through the entire weekend. temperatures upper 20s tomorrow, similar temperatures saturday, quite breezy as well. that breeze will continue on
6:19 pm
to see. then we warm up a little bit. could be approaching 40 with the snow shower north and maybe a rain shower south on tuesday. tom: spring is around the corner. jennifer: way around the corner. jamie: home town hero thursday, a defending state champion wrestler from bedford high school. new day for america is responsible for the content of this advertising. who do you like in this election? not sure yet. whoever gets something done. we've gone from eight billion in the hole, to two billion in the
