i'm deb davidson for 95.7 wzid. erin: all right. thank you. several states plus the district of columbia are under a state of emergency this morning as a powerful winter storm bears down on the mid atlantic. sean: blizzard conditions are expected from this. the director of the national weather service says the storm could cause more than $1 billion in damage. we are in new york city. the snow should start falling later today. reporter: this morning one last mid dash to prepare for a potentially historic blizzard. outside of costco in virginia lines to get in and lines to check out as stores try to keep up with the demand. >> d.c. is not ready for this kind of weather. reporter: the same scene as the trader joe's super market in the nation's capitol. forced to limit customers to ten at a time. shelves are water are now empty. snow shovels are disappearing just as fast. >> we're down to our

which is like three or four. : the federal government. it announced it would be closing at noon ahead of the epic winter storm. d.c.'s public transportation will be closing later today too. >> we're seeing everything line up for a major storm system affecting the eastern third of the country and affecting 50 million people. reporter: at reagan national airport, deicers are on standby as they offer passengers waivers to rebook the flights. for those staying home, like ryan williams in philadelphia, one last stop before the snow arrives. >> well, i already hit the grocery store. honestly when we're being truthful the most important thing is wine and whiskey. reporter: there's no doubt washington will be hit the hardest with more than two feet of snow expected to fall during the storm. a state of emergency has already been declared

five states have also followed suit. ann news, new york. erin: even though the storm isn't going to hit new hampshire, it is causing problems for people traveling. this is a live look at the departure board at the airport in manchester. you can see some flights are canceled already. ray brewer is live at the airport for us this morning. ray: that's right. even if you are planning to travel by plane, train, car, bus, you might need to rethink those plans. especially by plane. if your plans call for you to head south, airlines are canceled thousands of flights. many, many more expected over the next couple of days. that's having a big impact at the operations at the manchester regional boston airport. even though conditions here are fine other hubs will be all but shut down. we caught up with people from new york who say it

damaged or toppled four head stones. the driver was not hurt. right now no charges have been filed. a gnu part man is now charge with arson in connection with a fire in newport in november of 2013. 32-year-old anthony lantas was indicted by a grand jury. he was charged with burglarizing the home that he is accused of setting on fire. another man, frank magistro is serving time for his role in the case. they are looking for a man scene robbing the 7 eleven store. the clerk was sweeping the floor when the man grabbed him. after emptying both

sean: they are requiring a bill that would require gun owners to have liability insurance. they took a first look. opponents say the law could create a number of unintended consequences beyond what they see as an infringement on second amendment rights. supporters say it would keep guns out of hands of dangerous people. >> the idea is a relatively new idea. it has not been done in other states. new hampshire has led the way a number of times. sean: critics say the added burden of insurance would make it harder for low-income people to own guns. erin: still to come, a bedford senior is one of the west in the state and country. now he has his sight set on a new uniform. sean: it seems more and more people are trying to bring guns with them when they fly. new numbers show a frightening surge. erin: two new hampshire men are

sean: it seams to tsa agents are very busy. the agency says it found more than 2,600 firearms at security check points last year, up 20% from the previous record. more than 72% of those guns were loaded. dallas-fort worth saw the most guns. two were discovered at security here in manchester. erin: a heads up for parents of young children this morning. britax child safety is recalling more than 7,100b-safe infant car seats because the carrying handles can break. they were made between october 2014 and july of 2015. britax says it has received 74 complaints about the handle's cracking or breaking. one child suffered a minor injury. they will get a repeat

for a while. i'm thinking upwards of two feet. the only problem would be the winds. that might blow it out around. it is going to be a historic storm for them. similar to what we had at the end of january last year. this one. want it. others who don't want to rejoicing. it is going to miss us to the south. here's a live look at dublin. clear skies. it is very pretty with the moon. very bright at the moment. in claremont, same thing is true. you won't have any issues driving in to work this among. it certainly feels cold. look at these temperatures. we're in the double digits everywhere. 17 degrees in concord. 18 in manchester. 19 now in nashua. problem is we have some wind gusts overnight that have been going all throughout the overnight and even this morning. some of the wind gusts

to 30 miles per hour. we had one just a moment ago in ply mouther. now the most recent at 25 miles per hour. at the airport in concord. when you have wind gusts like this out of the north, northwest, it just really bites in to you. it makes it feel so much bitterly cold. with the wind this is how it feels. two degrees in laconia and plymouth. three in whitefield. only four in manchester. be prepared to be cold winds throughout the morning hours here. looking at future wind gusts, it does look like once we get to about noontime and beyond the wind gusts should diminish. we shouldn't have constant wind gusts up near 20 to 30 miles per hour. it is going to be sporadic gusts. a few clouds from tilton, plymouth, points to the north and upper valley. for central and southern new hampshire, we're enjoying the sunshine or at least will once it comes up. here's a big storm.

on the southern end, there's actually tornado warnings and severe thunderstorms warnings getting in to the panhandle of florida there. over the next few hours it is going to make a beeline toward washington, d.c. it has been a battle for us at least between the high pressure that we have on top of us and the low pressure. for us the high pressure is going to win the battle and keep the system to the south. but there are blizzard warnings posted for washington, d.c. there and even extending up close to new york city. up to two feet in washington, d.c. and close to a foot in new york city. we are missing out certainly on the brunt of this. of it. so if you have any travel plans, washington, d.c., new york city, it comes to a halt later on tonight. by 6:00 tomorrow morning it is in new york. then watch out close it creeps so close to boston and so close to the southern border by about 3:00 or 4:00 tomorrow afternoon. there may be a few flurries in southern new hampshire. it is gone by early sunday. maybe a dusting to an

in the next few day, airlines are offering waivers and suggest you be proactive in shifting your schedule. >> the best advice is we're lucky it is not coming to boston. it is going to be affecting, you know, the pattern all the way down the east coast to try to get out earlier. ray: it could take days for the airlines to get all of their flights back on track. the good news is that saturday is the slowest traveled day of the week. that still means some 22,000 flights will be impacted. manchester-boston regional airport, ray erin: thank you. conway police are asking for your help in tracking down a man wanted in connection with a tabbing. suspect. he's considered armed it happened yesterday the 24-year-old victim was stabbed in the neck and abdomen. his injuries are not life threatening.

among four people accused of holding a family at gun point. police arrested xavier watson and vincent casazza of newmarket and two men on charges including robbery. it happened last friday. five victims reported that four masked men entered the home with long guns and pistols and stole several items, including guns, money, and medical marijuana. watson is accused of sexually assaulting one of the victims. the victims were able to identify the suspects when they removed their masks while in the home. erin: a search is under way for two people wanted in connection with a beating and robbery in somersworth. they are looking for joel leary and another man who is not yet identified. felicia smart and edward dorr have been arrested. the victim responded to an online ad to meet a woman. he went to an apartment on main street where smart was waiting for him. dorr, leary, and a third

the victim leaving with facial injuries. it is believed there may be other victims who have chosen to remain quiet. >> probably an embarrassment issue. we are asking if anybody has been involved and a victim of this type of thing in the seacoast to please give us a call. especially 23 they recognize any of these individuals. erin: prosecutors claim they have evidence that edward dorr was robbing the things posting online ads were things they did to support themselves. erin: julie shine has pleaed guilty. her husband, william, tried to sell the 14-year-old girl to a man to sexually assault her not knowing he was an undercover police

hayley: good morning. a live look in concord. a chilly start for all of us. especially when you consider the winds are still gusting upwards of 20 miles per hour. the wind chills in the single digits. here's a look at forecast today once the sun comes up. we'll have bright sunshine through the day and a few passing clouds. still breezy with the high temperatures getting in to the mid to upper 20's. more on the weekend's forecast coming up. erin: we're following a developing story out of north korea. the country announced it arrested an american student for alleged anti-state attacks rather. sean: a local news agency says the student enters as a tourist and plotted to undermine the north system. it claims the student has linked to the u.s. government. erin: a 1-year-old boy is in state custody after he was revived with a drug that's typically used for heroin overdoses. last week paramedics

found the baby on a verge of going in to cardiac arrest. they gave him narcan. he is expected to be okay. they think a heart medication found in the apartment made the baby sick. a neighbor say state officials have had contact with the family before. >> she doesn't hit the baby or nothing. he never did any of that. she just didn't pay any attention to him. erin: police say it is the same apartment where a 2-year-old girl died in september. they are now looking for any connection between the two incidents. sean: china's food and drug administration says it discovered that opium poppies were being used as illegal seasoning in 35 students. five of them are being prosecuted. the 30 others which include dumpling and noodle shops, are being investigated. they were seasoning with the powder. it is not clear if the

customer. erin: a massachusetts couple is asking for help after a dog napper was caught on camera stealing their beloved pets. olga spivak and her husband say they broke in and stole jewelry, including the couples most prized possessions, a pair of pomeranians named caesar and cleopatra. they said there was a security image that looked like it was a small dog walking down the street. >> this person was a horrible monster. he broke our hearts and took part of our family. erin: the spivaks are pleading with the thief to bring their dogs back no questions asked. in case that doesn't happen, they are offering for a reward for the safe return of their pets. sean: a driver is facing charges after he was caught driving a car almost covered in snow. only a small portion of the drive's side wind

it was given a 110 ticket and charged with an obstructed view. he was too old and weak to brush it off. the officer cleared it for him and let him on his way. erin: the bruins skated on their home ice against the vancouver canucks. the canucks scored first. late in the second period the bruins were able to tie it up. boston was down by one goal in the third, and they tied it up again. but the canucks added an empty nether and went on to win this one 4-2. sean: there was a little football game going on this weekend. the patriots are gearing up for the afc championship game. the only way to tackle rob gronkowski is to go low and hit him and take him out at the knees, which we can expect to see from the broncos on sunday. >> i mean y'all asked me a simple question. how do you tackle a 6'6", 250 pound a tight end.

whitefield at 11. we have 15 in lebanon. 12 degrees in keene, jaffrey, about 14. the issue is the winds are continuing to be gusty and maybe you heard it in the middle of the night whistling around the house. the wind gusts have been getting up as high as 30 miles per hour. the latest gusts hit the airport in concord 25 miles per hour. when you factor in the northwest winds are continuously gusting and bringing down the colder air, it feels much more brisk. wind chills across the state are in the single digits. be prepared for that when you are stepping out this morning or for kids waiting at the bus stop this morning as well. north. north of tilton and the lakes region. otherwise it is going to be bright and sunny today. then all eyes go to the south eastern part of the u.s. as this major storm starts to form. it already has brought damaging winds and even tornado watches and warnings to parts of the southeast.
