>> stay home. stay home. stay home. sean: now on "daybreak," that's the message for millions of people across the mid atlantaic region this morning as a major winter storm bears down on the area. the weather is already causing problems for travelers even here in new hampshire. hayley: tracking the latest path of the storm. if it is swinging closer to us this weekend. the full forecast ahead. erin: there's a big mess to clean up in manchester after a car careened off of the road taking down several head stones. sean: should voters in new hampshire have to be residents of the granite? a proposal is moving

>> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now wur "news 9 daybreak." erin: all right. good morning to you. you've made it to friday. thanks for joining us. i'm erin fehlau. sean: i'm sean mcdonald. we've been talking about it all week. the storm that is not coming to new hampshire. it is impacting travel. it is going to be a big deal. hayley: even as close as comments to the south of us in boston, it is going to be such a sharp cut off on who is going to get a good amount of snow. we're on the northern fringe of this. looks like southern communities from keene to salem and plaistow, portsmouth may get a dusting. that's looking less and less likely as we push forward here. almost a complete miss across the state. in the meantime the weather has been really nice, hasn't it? sunshine and temperatures getting in to the 20's. the winds have been a problem. we're in the teens right now across the state.

make it feel colder than that. more like the single digits. there's the storm. it is just about to come in to washington, d.c. a little later today and bring very heavy snow and gusty winds. at the bus stop this morning, it is cold and breezy. by the afternoon, sunny with temperatures in the 20's. i'll track that whole storm for you and show you what the weekend forecast looks like for us coming up. for a look at the morning drive, we're joined live by deb davidson. good morning, deb. deb: good morning. if you are starting your morning commute on the western part of the southbound, we are seeing some book ets of heavy volume. just be alert as you are stretch. 89 is a smooth ride making your way in to the bow junction in bow. connecting with 93, southbound is moving well from bow to the stateline as we're still seeing some very light volume in morning. turnpike southbound no

tolls down in to nashua. it looks great as you are making your way in massachusetts. i'm deb davidson. erin: several states plus the district of columbia are under a state of emergency as the powerful winter storm bears down on the mid atlantic. sean: a blizzard conditions are expected. the director of the national weather service says the storm could cause more than $1 billion in damage. we have a reporter in new york city this morning. the snow should start falling later today. is there good morning. the storm hasn't hit. there are penalty of major cancellations to report. especially in washington where millions of people have already begun to hunker down. this morning one last mad dash to prepare for a potentially historic blizzard. outside of a costco in virginia, lines to get

out as stores try to keep up with the demand. >> d.c. is really not ready for this kind of weather. reporter: the same scene as the trader joe's super market forced to limit customers to ten at a time. shelves are water are now virtually empty. snow shovels are disappearing just as fast. also preparing the federal government which announced it would be closing at noon today ahead of the epic winter storm. d.c.'s public transportation will be closing later today too. >> we're seeing everything line up for a major storm system affecting the eastern third of the country and affecting east 50 million people. reporter: at reagan international the deicers on standby as they offer passengers waivers to rebook their flights. there's no doubt washington will be hit the hardest with more than two feet of snow expected to fall during

a state of emergency has already been declared there. five states have also fold suit. abc news, new york. erin: even though the storm isn't going to hit new hampshire, it is already causing problems for people that are traveling. this is a live look at the departure board at manchester. you can see there are a number of flights that have been canceled. ray brewer is live at airport for us this morning. ray: if your plans call for you to travel, especially if you are heading south, whether it is by car, by train, by plane, by bus, you might have to rethink those plans. especially when it comes to the airlines. thousands of flights have been canceled. many more expected other the next couple of days. that's having a big impact here on operations at the manchester boston regional airport. even though condition here are fine other major hubs will likely be all but shut down. now we caught up with

we have all of our people ready to go. we've been flu hurricane sandy, this cabinet. you know, six, eight, ten, 12 inches of snow on a weekend will not be something that i think will be more than we can handle. sean: to track all of the candidates and find out where, check out the candidate tracker of the politics section of wmur.com. the state senate has passed a bill to require a 30-day residency in new hampshire for voting. the bill is headed to the house. maggie hassan vetoed a similar bill last year. 22 other states already have voters residency requirements. supporters say it will cut down on voter fraud. opponents say it could prevent students from voting in primaries. erin: police and cemetery officials are assessing the damage after a car crashed in to the cemetery late last night. a man was driving east on goffstown road just after 10:30 when he went

bend near the mausoleum. the car took out five sections of fencing and toppled four headstones. the driver was not hurt. no charges have been filed. a newport man is charged with arson in connection with a fire in newport in november of 2014. 32-year-old anthony lantas was indicted by a grand jury. he was charged with burglarizing a vacant home. he's now accused of setting on fire. another man, frank magistro, is serving 12 months behind bars for his role in the case. a man robbed a seven-11 early yesterday morning. he was sweeping when a man directed him to the registers. after emptying both drawers, the man ran off to a nearby apartment

sean: they are considering a bill that require gun insurance. they took the first look at idea yesterday. opponents say the law would create a number of unintended consequences beyond what they see as an intrial judgement of second amendment rights. supporters say it would keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. >> the idea of liability insurance for gun owners is a new -- relatively new idea. no, it has not been done in other states. new hampshire has led the way a number of times. sean: critics say the added burden of insurance would make it harder for low-income people to own guns. erin: still ahead, a bedford senior is one of the best wrestlers in the state and the country. now he has his sights set on a new uniform. sean: it seems more and more people are trying to bring guns with them when they fly. new numbers show a frightening surge. erin: ahead two new hampshire

sean: it seems that tsa agents are keeping busy stopping guns from getting on planes. they found more than 2,600 at security check points last year. up nearly 20% from the previous record. more than 82% of the guns were loaded. dallas-fort worth saw the most guns. two were discovered at security here in manchester. erin: a heads up for parents of young children this morning. britax child safety is recalling more than 71,000b-safe infant car seats because the carrying handles can break. the affected seats were made between october 2014 and july of 2015.

woodstock with temperatures in the single digits. rindge starting out around 12. most of us in the double digits and teens. concord 16 and 18 in manchester. nashua. the problem is the winds are still kicking up. we have wind gusts up near 16, 17, maybe even 20 miles per hour across the region. these are really gusts. it is not a consistent strong wind. even the breeze like that kicking up in laconia is making it feel like six address. the wind chills across the state thanks to the wind still moving around are making it feel like the single digits. that will be the case especially through the morning hours as the gusts continue. a few areas of clouds mainly from tilton and plymouth including in the upper valley. central and southern new hampshire we're going to enjoy the sunshine pretty much all day long uninterpreted. down toward the south

getting going. this thing has blossomed in to a huge storm. you see the line of thunderstorms extending across the panhandle there of texas getting in to atlanta, georgia, and all of the snow and ice on the northern edge of the system. it's been a battle of high pressure over us and then this storm system approaching. high pressure is going to wind out the battle. that's going to help keep the storm to the south of us. it is going to be a big one. blizzard warnings have been posted for washington, d.c. winter storm warnings in the pink color. even extending in to new york. it is going to accumulate. the snow is going to be fluffy. upwards of two feet possible up to a foot possible in new york city. here's the timing of it all. you can see up in new hampshire this afternoon we're bright and sunny. just a few passing clouds. the snow just arriving in washington, d.c. this evening. then by early tomorrow morning in knock and it creeps closer to boston about midday tomorrow

look at right on the massachusetts-new hampshire line by 4:00. i wouldn't be surprised communities from manchester and southward may get a brief touch of light snow through the late afternoon and evening hours on saturday. but then this thing is long gone sunday. sunday looks good. mostly sunny and warmer. he's what you can today. mix of sun and clouds. winds out of the northwest. could have a few gusts up near 20 miles per hour. a nice, sunny forecast. a few passing clouds with temperatures in the 20's. then next week quiet so far. maybe some mountain snow showers on monday. on wednesday a few mixed showers. the temperatures really warm up. close to 40 degrees by wednesday of next week. already yesterday i was so warmly welcomed to the new durham school. here's a look at all of their smiling faces. i met with the first,

>> i'm declaring a state of emergency for the district of columbia. reporter: the nation's capitol shutting down from the mass transit to federal government, even the president who had a slippery ride wednesday preparing to hunker down. >> my guess is the president will stay warm and toasty inside the white house. reporter: the national weather service says more than 50 million people will be affected not just the snow but the ice and freezing rain. >> the cold temperatures and strong winds. we expect the winds will be very strong with this storm system. especially along the i-95 corridor. it will add to the impacts. reporter: in preparation, thousands of flights are being canceled and folks are stocking up to keep warm. >> the most important thing is wine and whiskey if we're truthful. reporter: the storm could take a toll financially. damage could top $1 billion or more. in washington, nikole

the storm are preparing for mass cancellations today and tomorrow. erin: ray brewer live from the manchester-boston regional airport where there's a ripple effect. ray: that's right. the big bless adder maybe staying south of us. some airlines are taking some proactive preparations. they've already started canceling their flights. by thursday night just a few cancellations had cropped up for flights departing the manchester-boston regional airport today. airlines expect planes to be grounded from this afternoon through saturday. travelers arriving home to new hampshire from new york say there was no calm before the storm getting out of the city. >> going from the city to laguardia where everybody going to the airport, the normal 25-30 minutes was, like, an hour and 15 minutes everybody. it was quite crowded. >> it was really crowded. we heard one announcement where they were offering $900 back with a hotel for

24-year-old keith hutchins. he is a suspect in a yesterday afternoon on bay road. the 24-year-old victim was stabbed in the neck and abdomen. his injuries are not life threatening. sean: two new hampshire men are among four men accused of holding a family at gun point in lyman, maine. xavier watson and vincent casazza have been charged. the home invasion happened last friday. five victims reported to four then entered the home and stole several items, including guns, money, and medical marijuana. watson is accused of sexually assaulting one of the victims. the victims were able to identify the suspects when they removed their masks while in the home. erin: is search is underway for two people wanted in connection with a beating and robbery in somersworth. they are looking for joel leary and another man who massachusetts not been identified.

police say the victim responded to an online ad to meet a woman. he went to an apartment where smart was waiting for him. soon afterward dorr, leary, and a third man attacked and robbed the victim, leaving him with facial injuries. there may be other victim who's have chosen ore main quiet. >> probably an embarrassment issue and things like that. we are asking if anybody has been involved and they've been a victim of this type of thing in the seacoast to please give us a call. especially if they recognize any of these individuals. erin: they claim they have evidence that dorr indicated that someone posting ads online and robbing were things they did on a regular basis to support themselves. sean: the wife of a franklin man convicted of human trafficking has entered a guilty plea. julie shine entered a plea. she will serve 11 to 30 years in prison. her husband tried to sell the 14-year-old

have made the baby sick. the family before. baby. she just didn't pay any attention to him. sean: this is the same apartment where a 2-year-old girl died in september. they are looking for any connection between the two incidents. erin: a massachusetts couple is asking for help after a dog napper was caught on camera stealing the beloved pets. olga spivak and her husband say someone broke in and stole jewelry and other dogs. a surveillance captured the man who looked like he was carrying a small dog walking down the street. >> this person -- i don't know. it is just a horrible monster. to me he broke our hearts. he took part of our family. erin: the spivaks are pleading

back, no questions asked. in case that doesn't happen, they are offering a reward for the safe return. sean: firefighters say a valley drove an suv straight in to an indoor swimming pool. the jeep landed in a pool at a condo complex in cambridge. a valley was parking when the slipped under the pedal and lost control. the suv sped forward before crashing in to the shallow end. the driver managed to get himself outearned was taken to the hospital with only minor injuries. erin: in sports, the bruins skated on their home ice last canucks. the canucks scored late in the second period the bruins were able to tie it up. goal in the third. they tied it up again. the canucks added an empty nether and then went on to win this 4-2. sean: the new england patriots are gearing up for the afc

bit mild there as i mention. certainly not that warm around here this morning. we're waking up to temperatures in the teens if not single digits. you can see it is bright and sunny still up in the north country. a few passing clouds. that's the case from essentially laconia, the lakes region, and ports north this morning passing clouds up there. here are the current temperature readings. 16 in concord, 18 in manchester, 16 in portsmouth, but with the winds it feeling colder than that. of winds have been gusty. here's a look at sustained winds. at the airport in concord, seven mile per hour out of the northwest. 17 miles per hour in manchester. we've have had gusts that have exceeded. with sustained winds like you saw there, that has resulted in a bitterly cold wind chill. this is how it feels on your bare skin or in

not wearing gloves. feels like three in manchester. feels like three degrees in plymouth. good idea to bundle up. before they head out to the bus stop. there are the clouds north. they are starting to fade away. really through much of the day here we're enjoying the sunshine. that's certainly not the case down in the south eastern part of the u.s. and eventually in to the mid atlantic. here's the big storm. already there have been tornado warnings, strong severe thunderstorms, and then on the northern end of this storm it is icy and very snowy. this heavy snowband just about to make it in to the washington, d.c. area. by the time it is all said and done with in washington dc, they could be talking about two feet of snow along with blizzard-like conditions with low visibility and gusty winds. it is going to make a move toward the north and east. the storm doesn't quite make it far enough to the north. we're only going to get brushed by it in

on saturday afternoon and in to the evening hours. here. about 2:00 this afternoon we're enjoying the sunshine you see up there with high pressure on top of us. this storm system is starting to climb northward. you see by 2:00 it is d.c. by early tomorrow new york city. starting to get in to boston by about midday tomorrow, getting very close to the massachusetts-new hampshire border by about 4:00 in the afternoon. i wouldn't be surprised if a few moneys along the massachusetts border, maybe keene, more like portsmouth and then also in to salem could be looking at an inch or so if you get some of those stronger bands coming in. otherwise it is a dusting. today temperatures in the 20's with sunshine and the gusty winds continuing on here. next week guys, look at the temperatures. we warm it back up in to -- close to the 40's. a quick cooldown this weekend back up.

erin: 6:54. updating our top stories this morning. sean: the big blizzard hitting states to the south is causing travel headaches here in new hampshire. here's ray brewer. ray: that's in the area of flights especially flights down south. airlines will already canceling flights here at the manchester-boston regional airport. that's having a big impact on operations even though the conditions here are fine, other major hubs will likely be all but shut down. erin: a car crashed in to the mt. calgary cemetery in manchester last night, causing a big mess. police say a man went off of the side, took out five sections of fencing, before knocking over four headstones. sean: they are asking for your help in tracking down a man wanted in connection with a
