now wmur news 9 at 5:00. >> a fast moving storm will barely brush new hampshire this this weekend, but it is a much different story to our south where the first flakes are falling in what is expected to be a massive winter storm. good evening, i'm jennifer vaughn. josh: let's have a look at this monster by the numbers, six states and the district of columbia have declared states of emergency for this storm. 30 million people are under a blizzard warning right now. more than 6,000 flights have been canceled with every major airline issuing travel waivers. jennifer: and sadly there have already been deadly accidents in southern states not used to the snow. in wowed, which could be hit the hardest, the federal government shut down at noon today. wmur's aixa diaz is there. reporter: the snow started at about 1:00 p.m. and it's been coming down consistently since. forecasters say we're in for at least another 24 hours of this. >> we're sending a clear message that most people in the district

reporter: the mayor of washington d.c. is urging residents to stay home and off the roads. >> we are very, very, very concerned about health, life, and safety of d.c. residents. reporter: the city could see upwards of two feet of snow over the weekend with strong wind causing whiteout conditions. >> i've activated 500 national guardsmen and women. reporter: virginia's governor says his state is ready with 13,000 pieces of equipment and 650,000-tons of salt. >> we're having weather issues across the state for the mountains to the coast. reporter: north carolina is seeing a mix of snow, ice and freezing rain. in neighboring tennessee, treacherous road conditions. >> if you can stay home, that will give our public works department the opportunity to get our roads cleared. reporter: new york city currently under a blizzard warning waits its turn. >> the expectation right now between 12 and 18 inches, so you've seen that number go up. reporter: coastal flooding on

concern. the national weather service says by the time this is all said and done this storm could cause more than a billion dollars in damage. josh: although new hampshire will be spared from most of this snow, granite staters still feeling the effects, especially travelers. this is the current status of flights through the manchester boston airport. stephanie woods is there tonight. reporter: reporter: yes, usually when you come to the airport you see a lot of smiles, people are welcoming their loved ones or going on vacation. unfortunately we're seeing very few smiles tonight. we're seeing a lot of red and yellow on the board, that's bad news for fliers who want to get away. so far today manchester has seen seven flights shut down coming into manchester, and five flights going out have been canceled. all the flight to and from baltimore, washington d.c. and

with many out of newark and philadelphia also affected. after visiting family in manchester, they were supposed to fly back to st. louis tonight. but they don't even see their flight on the board. >> we're probably not going to make it back, we'll probably be staying here a couple more days. >> they'll probably send us to chicago first, because some flights got canceled, be there for four or five hours. reporter: the lesson is that even if you are not flying to a mid atlantic flight today or tomorrow, definitely check with your airline, check your flights before you head to the airport, because they very well could be impacted by the storm. live in manchester, stephanie woods, wmur news 9. jennifer: also here in the state tonight, the storm staying to our south is disappointing for ski areas. but the weekend will still be a

so let's check in with chief meteorologist mike haddad for a look at the storm's track to our south. mike: if you look outside today you saw a lot of sunshine early and during the afternoon a milky appearance to the sky cover. those are the high clouds in advance of that monster nor'easter, well down in the deep south. notice the thick cloud cover anywhere from southern jersey through central, southern pennsylvania and the mid atlantic region with heavy snow. but even though that storm center is well off to our south and west, on the order of close to 900 miles or so, those high southern new hampshire. now speaking of southern new hampshire, we do stand a shot, give it about 60, 70% of getting a light coating to maybe a half inch of snow south and east of manchester during tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening. but take a look at that bulls eye of snow, two feet plus in and around the nation's capital, especially that plus in the mountains over west virginia and western virginia and western parts of maryland. now the south coast of new england will get a fair share of

so if your travel plans take you into connecticut, rhode island, southern parts of massachusetts and around plymouth towards the cape and islands, several inches plus could start to pile up as early as late morning into the afternoon. while it will be dry farther to the north over a good part of the granite state. what about the rest of the weekend and early next week. we'll look at a slight temperature climb in a bit. josh: this storm has prompted one presidential candidate to cancel campaign events in new hampshire. new jersey governor still has a day job and chris christie is headed home tonight. he created quite a buzz yesterday when he said he planned to stay in new hampshire unless things changed. but then said today his decision to return is right in line with his approach. >> let me be clear. i never made any decision not to go back. remember what i said yesterday, i said that i'm monitoring this on a regular basis and i'll make the decision that is the appropriate decision to make when i have to make it. josh: christie's wife will

outside christie's canceled events, candidates are holding 13 separate town hall as cross the state today and these are in addition to the first in the nation presidential town hall that will will feature g.o.p. candidates throughout the weekend. jeb bush held several events today at a retirement home. and a super pack backing bush has released negative ads going after john kasich and marco rubio. in an interview bush told news 9 it's politics. >> it's a lot for difficult when you're running for president against hillary clinton, that will be more fierce than anything we're seeing now. josh: ohio governor john kasich also in new hampshire tonight, right now he's holding an event in dover and moving onto rye. and he's also reacting to those attack ads. kristen carosa has more from a town hall held in franklin.

presidential hopeful john kasich began this town hall, with a personal story about losing his parents in a car crash. >> it was very, very tough for me because my greatest fear as a little boy was that my parents would be killed in a car accident. you got to be tough as president, you got to be tough as a congressman. you got to be tough as a governor. you can't let people run over you. reporter: some recent polls have kasich second in new hampshire behind republican donald trump. >> i look at it as getting my stuff out there, i don't worry about anybody else. i take care of my own race. reporter: but a recent attack ad by the super pack backing jeb bush is getting kasich talking. >> i love the traffic fact that i'm being attacked because it all big money trying to beat me down. reporter: kasich is firing back with an ad of their own. >> the campaign will do what it has to do. we're not going to have people beat us up, but i didn't start

from the area. mike: temperatures have been running close to average, we've seen a fair amount of sunshine during a good part of the day and later on started to see high clouds building in. well in advance of that powerful nor'easter to our south. right now the winds continue to drain in out of the north and northwest. and upstairs in the atmosphere, similar winds, and that will help to keep a lot of the snow from this nor'easter that we've been talking about all week, south of new hampshire. having said that, there could be a little bit that falls in extreme southeastern parts of the state. right now 20 far north, upper 20s south, winds on the active side out of the northwesterly direction, 5 to 15 miles per hour. stronger over 6,000 feet up atop mount washington, so the feel-like temperature is about five or six degrees lower than the number on the thermometer. overnight tonight mainly clear skies from the lakes region north. there will be some high clouds in southern areas and we'll

on average single digits in very low teens in the south. speaking of the south, take a look right now, memphis, tennessee, 35 degrees after dealing with wintery weather just above the melting point in atlanta, georgia. it's well below freezing in the nation's capital, that's why they're dealing with a blockbuster not only nor'easter but a blizzard. here it is in the making, a heavy shield of snow in portions of the ohio valley, the bulls eye is going to be the mountains of west virginia and northwestern portions of virginia, with possibly over three feet of snow, by the time this wraps up early sunday morning. the leading end of this storm will hit new york city in the coming hours and eventually hit southern parts of new england just to our south tomorrow morning. on future cast, fair skies across a good part of new hampshire, outside of some high clouds, but early tomorrow morning those clouds begin to lower and thicken just off to

let's find a path to citizenship with appropriate safeguards and milestones. anybody who has been convicted of any crime should be sent away, they should be deported, there's no question in my mind about that. >> look, i believe that our country is made stronger in every generation by the arrival of new american immigrants. and i believe that we're sell ourselves short by trapping 11 million of our neighbors. some of them who have known no other country in their living memory than our country. and so i believe that we need to have comprehensive immigration reform, with a pathway to citizenship for all 11 million of those that are currently trapped in this no man's land of having to live in the shadow economy. the books. we want wages to go up, we should pass comprehensive immigration reform. that's how our country works when it works best. e also believe we need to bring to an end the shameful practices

jennifer an update now on the breaking news from canada tonight. two people have within confirmed dead in a school shooting. this has happened in a small town in northern saskatchewan. the school teaches grades 7 through 12 and we're being told that right now the school remains in lockdown. josh: back to commitment 2016, our next group of candidates weigh in on what they believe should be done to reform the immigration system, and that includes the illegal immigrants already here. >> i will secure the borders. we'll build a wall that works. we'll put in place bio metic

archwore on the sky becomes more milky in appearance. those are the high clouds well in advance by about 900 miles from the center of a major storm in the making right now, soon to become blizzard for some parts of the mid atlantic coastline. for new hampshire though nice and quiet for now. south. until you get into the higher terrain in southwestern new hampshire, some mid 20's there. winds still draining out of the north to northwest, but much lighter than they have been, so after a gusty night last night and a breeze at times today, the winds are finally beginning to shut down. that will allow temperatures to cool off quite a bit and we could start to see a light glazing of ice developing on some of the big lakes in parts of central new hampshire, where we have yet to see a big ice sheet out there, especially on the big lake. down near zero up north, early tomorrow morning, elsewhere single digits and very low teens, of course all eyes and all the talk a good part of this week has been to our south, with this developing monster storm.

atlantic region, but down through portions of the tennessee valley and places like mississippi and alabama, a mix in south carolina. so usually when you get a lot of snow that far south it tough to get it all the way up into northern parts of new england. and the storm track remains well south of new hampshire. so while they will pick up two to three feet in parts of west virginia, virginia, towards the nation's capital, the amounts of snow will be much, much lower in southern new england, and even lower than that over southern new hampshire. as for the day tomorrow, high clouds early give way to a thicker cloud cover, a good part of the day will feature plenty of clouds, maybe a few glimpses of sun. anywhere from concord points north into the lakes region and brighter skies farther north. as for the steady snow, that will line up from boston and points south. the leading end or the northern edge of the storm may clip southeastern new hampshire, mainly manchester to the coast, and down through nashua with a dusting, possibly up to an inch. but several inches in central
