now wmur news 9 at 5:00. >> a fast moving storm will barely brush new hampshire this this weekend, but it is a much different story to our south where the first flakes are falling in what is expected to be a massive winter storm. good evening, i'm jennifer vaughn. josh: let's have a look at this monster by the numbers, six states and the district of columbia have declared states of emergency for this storm. 30 million people are under a blizzard warning right now. more than 6,000 flights have been canceled with every major airline issuing travel waivers. jennifer: and sadly there have already been deadly accidents in southern states not used to the snow. in wowed, which could be hit the hardest, the federal government shut down at noon today. wmur's aixa diaz is there. reporter: the snow started at about 1:00 p.m. and it's been coming down consistently since. forecasters say we're in for at least another 24 hours of this. >> we're sending a clear message that most people in the district
5:01 pm
reporter: the mayor of washington d.c. is urging residents to stay home and off the roads. >> we are very, very, very concerned about health, life, and safety of d.c. residents. reporter: the city could see upwards of two feet of snow over the weekend with strong wind causing whiteout conditions. >> i've activated 500 national guardsmen and women. reporter: virginia's governor says his state is ready with 13,000 pieces of equipment and 650,000-tons of salt. >> we're having weather issues across the state for the mountains to the coast. reporter: north carolina is seeing a mix of snow, ice and freezing rain. in neighboring tennessee, treacherous road conditions. >> if you can stay home, that will give our public works department the opportunity to get our roads cleared. reporter: new york city currently under a blizzard warning waits its turn. >> the expectation right now between 12 and 18 inches, so you've seen that number go up. reporter: coastal flooding on

concern. the national weather service says by the time this is all said and done this storm could cause more than a billion dollars in damage. josh: although new hampshire will be spared from most of this snow, granite staters still feeling the effects, especially travelers. this is the current status of flights through the manchester boston airport. stephanie woods is there tonight. reporter: reporter: yes, usually when you come to the airport you see a lot of smiles, people are welcoming their loved ones or going on vacation. unfortunately we're seeing very few smiles tonight. we're seeing a lot of red and yellow on the board, that's bad news for fliers who want to get away. so far today manchester has seen seven flights shut down coming into manchester, and five flights going out have been canceled. all the flight to and from baltimore, washington d.c. and
5:03 pm
with many out of newark and philadelphia also affected. after visiting family in manchester, they were supposed to fly back to st. louis tonight. but they don't even see their flight on the board. >> we're probably not going to make it back, we'll probably be staying here a couple more days. >> they'll probably send us to chicago first, because some flights got canceled, be there for four or five hours. reporter: the lesson is that even if you are not flying to a mid atlantic flight today or tomorrow, definitely check with your airline, check your flights before you head to the airport, because they very well could be impacted by the storm. live in manchester, stephanie woods, wmur news 9. jennifer: also here in the state tonight, the storm staying to our south is disappointing for ski areas. but the weekend will still be a
5:04 pm
so let's check in with chief meteorologist mike haddad for a look at the storm's track to our south. mike: if you look outside today you saw a lot of sunshine early and during the afternoon a milky appearance to the sky cover. those are the high clouds in advance of that monster nor'easter, well down in the deep south. notice the thick cloud cover anywhere from southern jersey through central, southern pennsylvania and the mid atlantic region with heavy snow. but even though that storm center is well off to our south and west, on the order of close to 900 miles or so, those high southern new hampshire. now speaking of southern new hampshire, we do stand a shot, give it about 60, 70% of getting a light coating to maybe a half inch of snow south and east of manchester during tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening. but take a look at that bulls eye of snow, two feet plus in and around the nation's capital, especially that plus in the mountains over west virginia and western virginia and western parts of maryland. now the south coast of new england will get a fair share of
5:05 pm
so if your travel plans take you into connecticut, rhode island, southern parts of massachusetts and around plymouth towards the cape and islands, several inches plus could start to pile up as early as late morning into the afternoon. while it will be dry farther to the north over a good part of the granite state. what about the rest of the weekend and early next week. we'll look at a slight temperature climb in a bit. josh: this storm has prompted one presidential candidate to cancel campaign events in new hampshire. new jersey governor still has a day job and chris christie is headed home tonight. he created quite a buzz yesterday when he said he planned to stay in new hampshire unless things changed. but then said today his decision to return is right in line with his approach. >> let me be clear. i never made any decision not to go back. remember what i said yesterday, i said that i'm monitoring this on a regular basis and i'll make the decision that is the appropriate decision to make when i have to make it. josh: christie's wife will
5:06 pm
outside christie's canceled events, candidates are holding 13 separate town hall as cross the state today and these are in addition to the first in the nation presidential town hall that will will feature g.o.p. candidates throughout the weekend. jeb bush held several events today at a retirement home. and a super pack backing bush has released negative ads going after john kasich and marco rubio. in an interview bush told news 9 it's politics. >> it's a lot for difficult when you're running for president against hillary clinton, that will be more fierce than anything we're seeing now. josh: ohio governor john kasich also in new hampshire tonight, right now he's holding an event in dover and moving onto rye. and he's also reacting to those attack ads. kristen carosa has more from a town hall held in franklin.
5:07 pm
presidential hopeful john kasich began this town hall, with a personal story about losing his parents in a car crash. >> it was very, very tough for me because my greatest fear as a little boy was that my parents would be killed in a car accident. you got to be tough as president, you got to be tough as a congressman. you got to be tough as a governor. you can't let people run over you. reporter: some recent polls have kasich second in new hampshire behind republican donald trump. >> i look at it as getting my stuff out there, i don't worry about anybody else. i take care of my own race. reporter: but a recent attack ad by the super pack backing jeb bush is getting kasich talking. >> i love the traffic fact that i'm being attacked because it all big money trying to beat me down. reporter: kasich is firing back with an ad of their own. >> the campaign will do what it has to do. we're not going to have people beat us up, but i didn't start
5:08 pm
and i let my campaign do what they want as long as it not personal. i've been fighting for the underdog since the day i was in politics, and when the big money comes, it's always designed to take you down. but it's okay, it's sort of funny, and my name i.d. will go up. reporter: while he's enjoying it, he says that's not what he wants to talk about. >> i saw significant economic gain when i was chairman of the budget committee. in ohio now a report of over 400,000 jobs, that's what i want to talk about. reporter: kristen carosa, wmur news 9. josh: several other republicans spend the day the new hampshire as well, jim gilmore in portsmouth today. rand paul is in the queen industry right now and will have a town hall tonight. marco rubio and rick santorum also have town halls starting about an hour from now. all three major democratic candidates were in new hampshire today. hillary clinton was in rochester for a town hall and before a packed house she covered a wide
5:09 pm
change to nuclear terror and perhaps taking a page out of bernie sanders' play book she outlined her plan to combat income inequality. >> we should make everybody making a million dollars or more have to pay a 30% income tax rate. that is an effective rate that actually produces in. because it's wrong that you've got millionaires and billionaires whose tax rate is lower than their secretaries. rochester, hillary clinton made her way to our studios where she sat down for a one on one interview. coming up we'll get her take on bernie sanders and the polls that show him ahead of her in new hampshire. jennifer: meantime, sanders made no mention of hillary clinton at his campaign stop in concord today. in fact, he made three stops across the granite state, and is wrapping up a town hall in bedford right now. that's where our jennifer crompton is now live. reporter: we can caught up with senator bernie sanders at
5:10 pm
there was no talk of poll numbers, no mention of any political candidate by name, instead he was more like professor sanders, talking to a group of people that he calls the torch bearers for american democracy. senator bernie sanders engaged with students and faculty at concord high, asking them to consider how history has changed in just the last century. >> what is easy for us to sit here and say, my god, i cannot believe that in america we had segregated schools, i can't believe that in america women did not have the right to vote. reporter: then to think about the role democracy and activism played and to consider what's going on now. >> in a nation in which we have more income and wealth inequality, we also have the poverty. is that something that 50 years from now people local say that
5:11 pm
reporter: he shared thoughts on making public college education and health care free, and how politics and the role of government are intertwined. >> if any republican candidate came before you and said, you know what, i've read the literature, i've talked to the scientists, we got a problem, we've got to do something about it, on that day that candidate would lose his campaign funding from the fossil fuel industry. reporter: he urged them to become actively engaged to bring about change. >> for tom brady it's not a spectator sport, he's in the middle of the conflict. democracy is not a spectator sport. every one of you has got to be down there on the field. reporter: concord high was his only closed event today. bedford high where he's speaking now, there was a long line. and from here he heads to hudson for a town hall.
5:12 pm
crompton, wmur news 9. jennifer: bernie sanders giving us a nice segue to the patriots who are on their way to colorado right now, ahead of sunday's afc championship game. josh: jamie staton has a look at today's important stuff. jamie: patriots were in a hurry, they wanted to get on the plane and get around that snowstorm and make their way to colorado. let's show you some video from high above at gillette stadium as the busses pulled out on their way to the all important game which is sunday, the afc championship game, 3:00 when they take on the denver broncos. patriots also had a practice early today. bill belichick's press conference he joked and said it was the earliest press conference of the year by far. the guy we got to hear from for the first time this week is julian edelman. >> it's been a special journey for me to see where the team was
5:13 pm
it's at, and it's one of those unbelievable things that you're fortunate enough to go and play, and so many big games that when the season is over you look back, that's pretty cool. jamie: also on his way, or on their way to denver is our wmur crew, led by jason king. his live reports from mile high stadium start tomorrow at 5:00 at night. jamie staton, news 9 sports. jennifer: now to some breaking news. josh: after the break we'll tell

jennifer: getting a look at traffic tonight, 293 north in manchester. josh: peggy james joins us now live with a look at the road home on a friday. >> good evening. we've had a problem on route 13, right in the brookline, new hampshire-townsend, mass border, a crash there on the massachusetts side has spillover traffic on route 13 into brookline still backed up. hopefully that will be clearing out soon. coming up from the massachusetts border it's a pretty good ride
5:17 pm
you're slow, windham, derry and londonderry. in manchester things are looking good on 293, and a slight tap of the brakes as you approach the hooksett tolls, then you're good up to concord. very slight slowdowns in the exits in concord as well as people head north. 101 west through bedford you've got your usual slowdowns there. and the everett turnpike very busy northbound. busier than normal between exits 7 to 11. 101 is a good ride to and from the seacoast right now, and the spaulding turnpike is heavy. the report being brought to you by auto fair. i'm peggy james, for 95.7, wzid. josh: there is breaking news out of canada right now. a school in the province of saskatchewan is in lock yawn after a shooting. diswhrerp is in a remote area. officials say there are victims, but they have not yet released any more details. a message from the school is
5:18 pm
from the area. mike: temperatures have been running close to average, we've seen a fair amount of sunshine during a good part of the day and later on started to see high clouds building in. well in advance of that powerful nor'easter to our south. right now the winds continue to drain in out of the north and northwest. and upstairs in the atmosphere, similar winds, and that will help to keep a lot of the snow from this nor'easter that we've been talking about all week, south of new hampshire. having said that, there could be a little bit that falls in extreme southeastern parts of the state. right now 20 far north, upper 20s south, winds on the active side out of the northwesterly direction, 5 to 15 miles per hour. stronger over 6,000 feet up atop mount washington, so the feel-like temperature is about five or six degrees lower than the number on the thermometer. overnight tonight mainly clear skies from the lakes region north. there will be some high clouds in southern areas and we'll
5:19 pm
on average single digits in very low teens in the south. speaking of the south, take a look right now, memphis, tennessee, 35 degrees after dealing with wintery weather just above the melting point in atlanta, georgia. it's well below freezing in the nation's capital, that's why they're dealing with a blockbuster not only nor'easter but a blizzard. here it is in the making, a heavy shield of snow in portions of the ohio valley, the bulls eye is going to be the mountains of west virginia and northwestern portions of virginia, with possibly over three feet of snow, by the time this wraps up early sunday morning. the leading end of this storm will hit new york city in the coming hours and eventually hit southern parts of new england just to our south tomorrow morning. on future cast, fair skies across a good part of new hampshire, outside of some high clouds, but early tomorrow morning those clouds begin to lower and thicken just off to
5:20 pm
it way into connecticut, rhode island and southern massachusetts, that's where there could be heavy snow band tomorrow, so if you have travel plans to the south of the granite state, conditions will deteriorate every 10 to 15 miles you go. could see a dusting to an inch south and east of manchester, but to get into northern parts of massachusetts, the amounts could be higher, and boston points south could see over a half foot by the time we get into late saturday night and early on sunday morning the storm is gone. we start to see a breeze and lots of sunshine statewide. there's a look at all the advisories up in terms of snow. there it is, that bulls eye of two feet plus around the nation's capital, the light blue shade barely scrapes southern new hampshire. i would say from manchester south and east we could see a dusting to as much as an inch, beginning mid afternoon tomorrow into about midnight tomorrow night. outside of that it is nice and quiet, a great weekend, by the way, to hit the slopes, and after that it warms up, we could be up near 40 on tuesday.

coverage, we asked the presidential candidates about a very important issue, what should be done to perform the im-- reform the immigration system including illegal immigrants who are already here. here's what democrats had to say. >> we have to move toward comprehensive immigration reform with a path to citizenship. i think there are certain requirements that more than 11 million people here should have to meet, and i've laid those out. there does have to be a recognition that they have to pay a fine, they're here originally undocumented, they have to learn english to the best of their ability, they have to stand in line to be able to be eligible for citizenship. i think it's the right thing, i also think it's the smart thing. one of the reasons a lot of experts say, and i agree with this, that we've had a faster recovery from the terrible great recession is because we had comparatively a younger work force, and that was primarily immigrant labor. so let's not throw the baby out
5:24 pm
let's find a path to citizenship with appropriate safeguards and milestones. anybody who has been convicted of any crime should be sent away, they should be deported, there's no question in my mind about that. >> look, i believe that our country is made stronger in every generation by the arrival of new american immigrants. and i believe that we're sell ourselves short by trapping 11 million of our neighbors. some of them who have known no other country in their living memory than our country. and so i believe that we need to have comprehensive immigration reform, with a pathway to citizenship for all 11 million of those that are currently trapped in this no man's land of having to live in the shadow economy. the books. we want wages to go up, we should pass comprehensive immigration reform. that's how our country works when it works best. e also believe we need to bring to an end the shameful practices

for months on end behind barbed wire. the enduring symbol of our country is the statue of liberty, and we need to act like it. >> i think what we have to understand is when we have 11 million undocumented people in this country, who are living in the shadows, who are in some cases being exploited, what we need to do is to take them out of the shadows, we need to move forward with comprehensive immigration reform, which leads to a path towards citizenship. and i'm going to work very hard on that. also there are executive orders that a president can do to make sure that families are united, not divided. josh: we're going to hear more from the candidates in the next half-hour. also ahead, you always hope your car is in good hands when you pass over the keys to the valet. this wasn't the case for one new hampshire driver. jennifer: it's a greeting one family moving into their new

jennifer an update now on the breaking news from canada tonight. two people have within confirmed dead in a school shooting. this has happened in a small town in northern saskatchewan. the school teaches grades 7 through 12 and we're being told that right now the school remains in lockdown. josh: back to commitment 2016, our next group of candidates weigh in on what they believe should be done to reform the immigration system, and that includes the illegal immigrants already here. >> i will secure the borders. we'll build a wall that works. we'll put in place bio metic
5:37 pm
monitor the border, we'll put in place a strong e verify. we'll end sanctuary cities by cutting off taxpayer funds to them. we will end welfare benefit for those here illegally. i have a very detailed immigration plan on our website, ted cruz.org, eleven pages single space, was designed by the two leading defenders -- we can do that and still celebrate legal immigrants, people like my dad who came legally seeking the american dream. but particularly in terror, in the age of isis, border security is national security. >> we need to secure the border, i will. there's a border security bill sitting on the house floor, it hasn't been voted on. that's why we need a leader in the white house who will challenge the status quote. secondly we need to fix the legal immigration system, it's been broken for 25 years. we let the wrong people in, we send the wrong people home.
5:38 pm
overdayed your visa, either that or we don't care, and we don't have an employer verification system that works. every one of those problems can be solved, they just never get solved in washington d.c. so we have to fix the legal immigration system and then we have to finally, when we've restored people's faith in the basic competence of their government then finally we have to tackle the question of what do we do with people who are here illegally, come here and stay here illegally. my own view, they have forfeited their right to citizenship, because you can't say to people who follow the rules, who play by the rules, who read our history, who raised their hand and taken the oath, you can't say to them there is no reward for playing by the rules. and you can't say to people who have broken the rules that there are no consequences. that undermines can character of our nation. >> my view is that we're not going to put people on boxcars and ship them back to other places. so i believe we're going to have to register people and get them into some kind of system where

have a permit to work, but not amnesty and a path to citizenship, that's where i draw the line. in the meanwhile, i believe that birth right citizenship is legitimate and can be controlled in other ways. i don't believe that donald trump is right on almost anything that he's proposing on this. he's expressing anger and resentment, which i do understand. but his approaches are almost, he talks like a fascist type of approach and i'm against that. we have to control our border, we have to make sure that sanctuary cities are prohibited. and that anybody who is breaking the law in this country will be prosecuted and deported. and in the future, anybody that comes into the country illegally is going to actually be again. >> i've been to the border, i've seen the most effective way in the san diego area where we built a double wall. and the apprehensions went from 480,000 down to 30,000. a 95% reduction.

5:40 pm
we've got to do that and i'll do it in my first year and i'll send a department of homeland security director to live in laredo, texas and say you aren't leaving until we secure the border. but it's also about changing the economic dynamics. if we pass the fair tax, we take away -- and to the employer of the illegal immigrant. if you take economic advantage of illegal immigration, you will go a long way to solving why we have so much of it. josh: you can find all the information you want on our politics section of wmur.com. jennifer: clearing snow is a tough job for anyone, but the task can be harder for seniors and those with disabilities, so one canadian town is offering a helping hand to anyone in need with a program called snow angels. after such a harsh winter last year, news of in free service is
