adam: now at noon, today marks 30 years since the shuttle challenger disaster that killed took the life of concord teacher christa mcauliffe. we take a look at how those who were lost are being remembered. kevin: still fairly mild out there this afternoon, but another system approaching. the details on that ahead. adam: also, he was a force in rhode island politics for four decades and also ended up in prison. former providence mayor buddy cianci has died. plus, republican hopefuls are gearing up for the final faceoff before the iowa caucus. but donald trump says he won' t be there. adam: today marks 30 years since challenger. among the astronauts on board was christa mcauliffe, a 37-year-old new hampshire social studies teacher who was selected to be the first teacher in space. good afternoon. i' m adam sexton. wmur' s ray brewer is live at concord high school where they are remembering and honoring the life of christa mcauliffe. ray: in the first few years after the disaster, the high school always held a moment of silence at the time of the explosion. that stopped after five years, but today, they brought it back to mark the anniversary. a flag that has flown all over the country, including the capitol, in christa' s honor flew at concord high before making its way to its permanent home at the christa mcauliffe library in framingham. inside the school in a class founded by christa mcauliffe, entitled american women, students gathered to hear about

or were at concord high school that fateful day. about christa, don' t make her t a saint. [laughter] she got bored with meetings. ray: mcauliffe was one of apply for the teacher in space program. kristin jacques: we got to hear her experience of applying for the teacher in space program, how she barely made the deadline, ran out of her house in her pajamas to get to the post office so that it was postmarked in time. ray: being chosen to be the first teacher in space catapulted mcauliffe to international celebrity, but a colleague says mcauliffe never forgot who she was. sue capano: she was down in houston, and she had told her people, "you guys got to fly me up to new hampshire." we' re in training," and she it' i' ve got to be there." ray: colleagues and former students also recalled how what had been a party atmosphere quickly changed once the

but today was more about mcauliffe' s legacy, and a former student says mcauliffe always told her that she could do anything. so concord high school students acted on that advice, putting their dreams on stars that mcauliffe wanted to reach for. mcauliffe' s image a constant reminder of what she meant. tom: she was a regular person, not a saint. she was a really, really good teacher. ray: most of the teachers that taught here when mcauliffe was here have since retired, but they say she will always be a presence here, and through things such as the class she founded, will have a living legacy. reporting live outside concord high school ray brewer, wmur , news 9. adam: ray, thank you. meanwhile, the families of the challenger astronauts gathered at the kennedy space center in florida. mcauliffe' s son scott made an appearance.

nasa memorials. tonight on a special "new hampshire chronicle," we' ll show you how the teacher in space mission continues, after the tragedy, the families of the seven crew members formed an organization called challenger center. the non-profit has created more than 40 learning centers, which are found in 27 states and four countries. the interactive space adventures are filled with hands-on experiments that get students engaged in the areas of s.t.e.m. -- science, technology, engineering, and math. astronaut mark kelly is a member of the challenger center board. mark kelly: the goal is to inspire some of these kids to be special "new hampshire chronicle," touching the future, the challenger legacy, how the shuttle' students continues all around the world 30 years later. in the 30' s with no big way. here' where it' s a sunny, slightly breezy day. meteorologist kevin skarupa is

kevin: a light wind making it feel pretty good out there. certainly 30' s to near 40 degrees, and with a light wind, that certainly feels pretty nice out there. we have been adding a few high clouds from the next quick moving, weak system coming out of canada. this one a moisture-starved system. nothing we are expecting any major travel headaches from. we should approach 40 degrees in southeastern areas of the state from there, continuing to pull off by a few more degrees before and other warm upsets off next week. we will talk about what that means with the forecast coming up in a few minutes. adam: we will take it, kevin. thank you very much. today, a sentence review hearing is scheduled for a convicted sex offender. joshua baud was sentenced back in 2014 for sexually assaulting a seven-year-old girl. however, a week later, the judge tried to reduce the sentence he handed down, saying he felt it was, quote, "inappropriately high." but it wasn' t clear if he was allowed to do so.

said the judge can reconsider the sentence and reduce it if he wants. salem police say they believe to robberies within a week at the same convenience store are connected. investigators say after 11:00 last night, a man walked into the 7-eleven on cluffs crossing road and demanded money. he took all the cash from both registers. no weapon was shown, and the clerk was not hurt. he matches a suspect in an additional robbery that happened last thursday. happening now, a water main concord. officials say the break has court to close. several cases were canceled for officials say probate court will crews are repairing the line and to the break. the road will be closed all day. former providence mayor buddy cianci' s employer and a friend both confirmed that the colorful

morning at the age of 74. cianci was one of the longest-serving mayors in u.s. history. he was first elected to the job back in the 1980' s. he was forced from office twice. first in 1984 for assaulting a man and a second time in 2002 for racketeering conspiracy. he served over four years in prison. right now in commitment 2016, republican presidential hopefuls are gearing up for their final debate before the iowa caucus. but front runner donald trump will not be there. abc' s kenneth moton has more on the controversy and who will actually be taking the stage. kenneth: trump' s debate boycott. mr. trump: so i get on the stage for the first debate. from somebody, but we don' t need to talk about that. kenneth: instead, the gop frontrunner talked about it on the very network he' s in a bitter, public feud with, taking on bill o' reilly on "the o' reilly factor." mr. trump: i have zero respect debate moderator megyn kelly out. o' reilly suggested trump turn to

adam: three more arrests have been made in the armed standoff at a federal wildlife reserve in oregon. the three suspects surrendered overnight, turning themselves in at a checkpoint set up by authorities. this comes after one person was killed and seven were arrested and charged with felonies. the leader of the group, ammon bundy, urged those still at the refuge to stand down saying the fight is now in the courts. it is unclear how many people are still occupying the refuge, but the fbi is also urging them to go home. the group was protesting after two local ranchers were sent to

federal land. right now, three escaped inmates in california are still on the run, but five people have been arrested in connection to the escape. out of the california jail on friday. authorities believe the inmates had outside help since the tools used for the escape were not prison-made. according to the orange county sheriff' s office, more arrests are likely in this case. a developing story this noon -- the ferguson police department has agreed to overhaul its practices. the recommendations came after the fatal shooting of michael brown by a police officer back in august of 2014. the officer was cleared in the killing of the 18-year-old black man, but it led to protests. the overhaul is part of a sweeping deal with the u.s. justice department. new concerns for your health this noon as worries over the zika virus grow. says it' s holding an emergency

showing you the bad weather band top not washington. wind chill' s are at -14 with wents gusting at -- winds gusting at 15 miles an hour. vermont is normally shrouded with clouds this time of year. at least enjoying some sunshine. it looks like we will continue on with sunshine blending with a few more high clouds. you will notice those continue to gather in number, especially in northwestern sections of the state where we have the best chance of a' s no shower this afternoon -- a snow shower this afternoon. this evening, a fairly moisture-starved system moves across the great lakes. some of this is lake-effect snow. we watch this make its way with most of its energy across central parts of canada. the x factor is a storm system located well a four by a solid 400 miles. we will start to link up with this and create some snow shower

temperatures after starting in the lower digits now are back at 30, making a serious run at 43rd where running 5 degrees to 7 degrees cooler. those winds will continue to pick up to the afternoon and occasionally gust over 15 miles an hour out of a southerly direction. you can see the moderation back out to our west, eventually playing on our weather down the road. the high clouds continue to of the afternoon. more flurries of north. clouds continuing to take over later on tonight with lows in s. at just about any point snow showers. not expecting anything more. highest elevation. that system pulls away. notice the north country as we work our way through saturday afternoon and into saturday
