well. >> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now wmur "news 9 daybreak." hampshire. welcome to february. i'm erin fehlau. caucus monday. we'll talk about that. what about the weather out there yesterday? i was out there with no jacket on. it felt like april. kevin: today more of the same. we're not going to see there will be quite a few clouds making its way. with that there could be a passing shower. the best chances are going to be in the northern parts of the state. a lot of areas up above. we'll slip back from the mid 30's to mid 40's behind that front tomorrow. a mild day as winds pick up out of the west. we'll start to see the cooler air drain in out behind the next system that arrives wednesday morning. much more coming up. let's look at your morning ride here in the granite state.

race for president. sean: the iowa caucuses are today. new polls show the races in both parties are tightening. in 24 hours, two candidates will be celebrating big boosts. lana zak starts the commitment 2016 coverage from des moines. >> it sounds like you want to make a political revolution. [cheering] >> i am a better candidate. thanks to you i will be a better president. i want you to know that. reporter: this is it. time is up for the three democrats and the 11 republicans running for president. rob sand will be administering a caucus in western des moines. >> i think a lot of people are going to make that decision when they are listening to the neighbors. reporter: the last iowa poll found five points or less separating. with a third of voters wavering, campaigns can influence the results up to the last second. in the final day on the

>> i think we are going to fight very hard for new hampshire. weaver going to be in new hampshire on tuesday, i guess. we'll spend much of the week there. we're going to be holding a lot of meetings. sean: this is just the start of a busy stretch. the candidates are thinking about new hampshire next week. then super tuesday are are all in the four weeks. erin: some of the hopefuls already. ray brewer continues the commitment coverage. ray: even as voters in iowa gather, john kasich, jeb bush, and chris christie meeting with voters in new hampshire, highlighting the importance. even for the candidates aren't here themes, the volunteers aren't taking a break. they are making phone calls, trying to reach as many voters as they can between now and next tuesday. john kasich spent the weekend in new hampshire as he closes in on a

kasich promising to lower tax rates, reduce spending, and address climate change. one-time candidate, senator lindsey graham was here campaigning for jeb bush. he says he's best prepared and has plans that can be accomplished. u.s. secretary of labor, tom perez, rallied support for hillary clinton, touting the former secretary of state as someone who will be ready to go from day one on everything from the economy to foreign policy. nearly every candidate has said how important new hampshire is to their campaign. several has staked the future of the race on the results. you can expect a big surge of activity the next week. erin: all right. the political coverage continues online. watch josh mcelveen's one on one interview with candidates and compare where they stand on the issues that most matter to you.

politics page at wmur.com. sean: emergency officials in hooksett are dealing with a mystery. several people called 911 to report a loud boom or explosion. they didn't find any hazards are problems or even any smoke. police would like to hear from anyone who has information about what may have happened. a snowmobilers is safe after spending a night in the woods. a plan left and planned to have lunch in maine. another snowmobilers found him sunday morning. the man got stuck after getting lost and slept on a bed of branches on the snow. erin: two people are due in court after police found a one pot meth lab in lebanon. they went to the condo on friday after getting the tip that the bank robbery suspect out of north carolina was staying there. police arrest 29-year-old jamie smith and also found

renehan who is wanted in vermont for failing to appear in court. when they searched the home, they found evidence of meth including chemicals that had been flushed down the toilet. a massachusetts man is accused of driving so fast on interstate 93 that the wind caused a state police troopers park cruiser to shake. troopers say they clocked 19-year-old andrew tham at 116 miles per hour. he's charged with reckless operation. sean: the zika virus continues to spread across central and south america. there are growing concerns surrounding the olympics in brazil and whether athletes and fans will travel. three dozen americans have been diagnosed with the virus. the biggest risk is to pregnant women. that's forcing some people to change travel plans. a family from londonderry was scheduled to visit st. thomas. they canceled the trip due to the zika concerns. >> my doctor advised me she would tell us not to go on the trip if the zika virus came too

of pluto. sean: where there's water there's life perhaps? kevin: it is 350 degrees below zero. sean: very hardy life. kevin: that's fairly -- yeah, fairly unconvenient for life to say the least. almost absolute zero. we start out with a look outside. we have mostly cloudy skies out there. there's a front making its way through today. temperatures ahead of that are going to jump in to the 40's and 50's. tomorrow will be in the 40's. looks like we'll be in the ho 40 's with the on wednesday morning. it is a fairly quiet start. you'll notice a few more breaks in southern areas than you will up north. this front will continue to slowly wither away as it bumps in to the drier air. while there are the chances of a couple of showers out there today, it should be fairly light and fairly brief what happens. a lot of this will be to the east by lunchtime and in to the afternoon a westerly wind will dry us out. temperatures before the cooler air gets here jump from the temperatures which start

near 40. up in to the 40's to lower range of the 50's in to the afternoon. notice the winds early this among. not too bad to take. the general southwesterly direction to keep the milder air in place with the clouds and the risk of a shower this morning. it should push temperatures out of the mid to upper 40's in the north country to lower to mid 50's in southern spots this afternoon before the cooler air starts to win out. a lot of areas down in to the 20's. high temperatures today ranging from 46 in far northern parts to the mid 50's in southern areas. again kind of a gloomy start with plenty of clouds and the risk of a shower. in to the afternoon, partial sunshine and a building breeze out of the west which will temper things. temperatures up in to the 50's should feel good. from there, we drop back temperatures in to the 20's. tomorrow closer to the average. still low to mid 40's with the sunshine will be in the mid to upper 30's up north. next system starts to run in later tomorrow with an increase in clouds.

just cool enough that we may see an initial wintry mix. the best chance would be in western and northern areas. from there, temperatures again jump in to the 40's on wednesday afternoon. that means most of what we'll see for most of the day on wednesday will likely be in liquid form. once that pulls away, we start cooling off again. low to mid 40's by thursday and friday which is where we'll be in to next weekend. today temperatures in the low to mid 50's with clouds giving way to partial sunshine. it will a mild and breezy afternoon after the risk of a shower. clearing skies later on this evening. we turn cooler. a lot of areas down in the 20's. we'll be around the freezing mark closer another shoreline. temperatures a lot more 40's and 50's. then we cool off from there. back to the mid 30's by the end of the week. biggest system on the maps is wednesday. it could be an initial

95% of what we see on wednesday will be in liquid form. that gets us back to partial sunshine and a quiet pattern through the weekend. there could be a couple of snow showers by super bowl sunday. erin: it is going to feel spring like today. kevin: yes. there will be the breeze. that tempers things a little bit. 20 degrees above normal. erin: crazy. we want to check our top stories. the iowa caucuses are today. after months of campaigning and debates. this is the first time that voters will weigh in on the presidential election. donald trump is leading on the republican side. the race is tight. most candidates are still keeping an eye on new hampshire though. with john kasich, jeb bush, and chris christie all in the granite state today. several others will arrive tomorrow. primaries next tuesday. it could be determine the future of the campaigns.

kevin: monday morning, february 1st. we start out with a few clouds moving in. this along the front moving through this morning. we get the milder air for another afternoon after a mild start. highs in the low to mid 50's at the seacoast. we'll have details on when the cooler air finally arrives coming up. erin: scientists say they used tiny glasses to prove that praying mantises have 3d vision. sean: researchers designed special glasses and attack them using beeswax.

twice. state officials are chair lift after a pair of chairs collided over the weekend leaving two people trapped. and a public hearing is being held on a proposal to launch a bobcat hunting and trapping season here in erin: really mild air today. we're going to have the wind. kevin: the breeze is going to pick up especially in to the afternoon. it will gust over 20 miles an hour. we'll have clouds this morning and the risk of a passing shower turning partly sunny in to the afternoon. temperatures off to the proverbial running start and above freezing and still near 40 from manchester to the coast. it is low to mid 50's and in the 40's up north through the day today with partial sunshine for the afternoon. from there it does look like we start to cool off a bit. we don't get the huge punch of colder air until sometime later this week. erin: more rain to come. kevin: looks like wednesday would be the day for that. erin: we want to check the roads for you.

erin: caucus day is here. after months of candidates will finally hear from the voters as heard for the first time in the presidential contest. sean: nikole killion is in des moines, iowa with a preview. reporter: erin and sean many of the candidates are campaigning up until the caucuses. some are sitting it out and hoping for the best. countdown to caucus. >> we're getting close. candidates pulling out all of the stops. from duck calls -- >> i want to ask everyone here to vote for me ten times. reporter: -- to calls for support tonight. >> hello, des moines. reporter: it was a family affair for the clintons and the trumps. >> wouldn't it be great if she had her baby in iowa? wouldn't that be great? reporter: so much at stake as iowans make their voices heard. >> iowa auditions. they are the first audition for the

republicans are still undecided. i want those undecided votes to come to the christie column. sean: you can can see more of the interviews with the presidential hopefuls by heading to wmur.com. erin: a new wmur cnn poll is showing where the candidates stand ahead of the first in nation primary. the poll released shows bernie sanders with a big lead over hillary clinton. 57% of likely democratic voters said they would vote for sanders while 34% said they would vote for clinton. on the republican side, donald trump remains the front runner in new hampshire with 30% of likely voters saying they would vote for him. ted cruz is second with 12% followed by marco rubio, john kasich, and chris christie. sean: once the iowa caucuses are over, the candidates will be turning their focus back to new hampshire. only of them are here trying to drum up support. ray brewer live in the

good morning, ray. ray: good morning. even though most of the candidates were not in new hampshire, their volunteers are campaigning, making phone calls, trying to reach as many voters as possible. leaving his competitors in iowa, john kasich continued campaigning in new hampshire on sunday as he approaches 100 town halls in the state. >> whether i win or not, i believe in the process. i believe that the folks in new hampshire are the best screeners america could have to recommend to the country. sean: kasich promising to lower tax rates, reduce spending, and change climate change. >> we want to police and control the world. just like a good mom or dad, we have to lead as an adult country. that's our destiny as america. okay? plain and simple. ray: after dropping out of the race about a month ago, south carolina senator lindsey graham is back supporting jeb bush.

candidates will be making their way here. in the studio, ray brewer. erin: all right. thank you. two stores in manchester were forced to evacuate yesterday. for thes say they were called to modell's sporting goods after workers reported smelling gas. firefighters found above average levels of carbon monoxide in the stores. they evacuated them for an hour to ventilate. officials believe that a demolition crew at the former michael's location next door was not properly exhausting their power equipment causing diesel and carbon monoxide to leak in to both of the stores. sean: a chair lift accident sent two people in the hospital yesterday. the keene fire department says a pair of ski lift chairs collided, leaving two people trapped. crews were able to rescue them and get them down the mountain. they were both taken to the hospital for evaluation. five other people had to be helped off of the

the fire department told granite gorge not to operate the lift until it can be inspected. erin: they are on a proposal to launch a bobcat season for the first time in two decade. they are going to issue lottery. despite the hunting and trapping seasons, the bobcat population could grow. opponents doubt the population is that high and argue there's no reason to kill bobcats. tonight's hearing will begin at 6:00 at the state house. a second hearing will be held tomorrow night in lancaster. sean: a documentary about james foley will be available this morning. the document called jim, the james foley story, premiered last week. it will be available on hbo, saturday, february 6th at 9:00 p.m. in a statement they sated we're honored he has chosen to make jim

climbing out of her bedroom window. they haven't given a motive or said how she died. erin: a nun came to the rescue injuries. >> a tree fell on him. erin: doug goldman was 100 yards when the nun heard his calls for help. when she found him, she saw he was in trouble and dieded 911. when police arrived, goldman had been on the ground with his leg trapped for two hours. he's still recovering. sean: a star wars painting was stolen. it has been returned now. but the person who brought it back left workers scratching their head. they captured a man wearing a storm trooper helmet returning the painting. workers say they saw him ride up on a motorcycle. when he walked in, they thought they were getting robbed. >> i walked up and started going towards

last five. erin: congratulations to sean doherty. he won the medal at the championship in romania on sunday. the 20-year-old won the 12.5 kilometer pursuit by 30 seconds. doherty took bronze in the individual and silver in the sprint. he has ten career medals making him the moat decorated junior triathlete. sean: bruins hit the ice if a good cause. members of the boston bruins alumni team faced off. the fundraiser assists the crotchet mountain in providing outdoor activities and purchasing adaptive equipment. this is the sixth year the event hads been held giving the participates the chance to meet legendary prayers. >> it is just a pretty incredible thing when

guys at this level and what they are able to do and give back to the community. >> crocket mountain is a fantastic organization and a school. they do so much for the disabled. you know, i can't say enough about them. we play -- some of us have played in the golf tournaments in the summer. we play the hockey game to help them raise much needed funds. we continue to want to do that. hopefully they will keep inviting us back. sean: i haven't seen rick middleton in a few years. they play more than 30 games for charity every year. erin: as we've been talking about it, it was gorgeous weather yesterday. really didn't feel like the end of january. now we're in february. we're going to see temperatures warmer. kevin: we're going to continue to be well above normal before temperatures start to ebb back to normal. a lot of clouds and a passing shower early this morning. otherwise we'll see increasing sunshine and

that will help push temperatures up from the mid 40's to as high as the mid 50's in southern spots with the wind out of the west. from there, we'll be keeping the sunshine in place for tomorrow with temperatures still in the low to mid 40's. then we'll start to ebb back from there. after a system moves through on wednesday, looks like it could be any sort of a mixture early if it comes in early enough with temperatures just cool enough over to mainly rainfall. you'll notice early this morning, quite a few clouds away from the shoreline in central and northern areas. partial sunshine is the reality with the occasional overcast with the chance of a passing shower through about 10:00 or 11:00 this morning. then the winds pick up out of the west. behind the front, cooler air starts to rush in after that late this afternoon in to the evening with lows in a lot of areas dropping back in to the 20's later on tonight. we start off in the lower half of the 40's in southern areas. these numbers here well above our normal highs for this date and the this time of year. we are looking at

to the 40's statewide. there will be some mid 50's in a couple of southern spots in to the afternoon with the wind picking up out of the west. gusty at times over 20 miles ran hour later on this afternoon. quite a few clouds around this morning. then giving way to partial sunshine in to the afternoon. really any chantses of showers withering away by lunchtime. that allows temperatures to fall in to the 20's to 30 degrees. tomorrow still mid 30's to mid 40's with a good deal of sunshine and lighter breeze. clouds start to increase later tomorrow evening. it may be in early enough. temperatures may be just cool enough in western and northern areas we may see an initial mix. if it starts after 8:00 or 9:00 in the morning, chances are all you'll see is rainfall through the afternoon. it should wither away later on on wednesday evening setting up fair skies for the end of the week along with that temperatures starting to cool off. much like tomorrow we should be in the 40's, i think thursday behind

also be in the 40's. then falling back even further and in to the 30's on friday. temperatures starting off the day in most locations. a jump anywhere from the mid 30's to lower half of the 50's. clouds maybe a shower this morning and giving way to partial sunshine in to the afternoon. we'll be cooling off for tomorrow. still we're talking temperatures a solid ten degrees above the average. we go up again. any sort of a wintry mix on wednesday in western and northern areas giving way to rain. it should end wednesday evening. that sets up the partial sunshine and cooler temperatures on thursday. by the time we get to friday, we're talking temperatures in the 30's. which is where we should be. the next system after wednesday looks to be some scattered snow showers on sunday. sean: we kind of buried the lead. tomorrow morning you're getting a major weather prediction from punxsutawney. kevin: i always tell people this, the take away besides the cute little ground hog is the
