ted cruz is the winner at 28% with nine precincts reporting in. marco rubio has 23% and in carson is at 9%. they are followed by rand paul, jeb bush, john kasich and carly fiorina. mike huckabee, chris christie, rick santorum and jim gilmore are at the bottom. tom cole it for the democrats with 93% of the precincts reporting, hillary clinton and bernie sanders are within just a few votes of each other. both hovering in at 50% apiece. shelley: wmur political director josh mcelveen has been reporting from iowa since saturday and joins us now live. josh? josh: there' s no shortage of drama in iowa tonight. caucus-goers turned out in record numbers. it was thought to benefit both bernie sanders and donald trump. bernie sanders is given --

everything she can handle, but it' s ted cruz and not donald trump as the choice of iowans tonight. the reality is that this point, donald trump is in danger of finishing in third place here in iowa which would be a disaster for his campaign, behind marco rubio. that would be a big victory for him. they both spoke to their supporters not long ago. text this is the moment they said would never happen. >> we are leaving tonight and tomorrow afternoon we will be in new hampshire and that will be something special. it' s going to be a great week and were going to be appeared next week and i think we will be proclaiming victory, i hope. we will go on to get the republican nomination and we will go on to easily beat hillary or bernie or whoever they throw up there.

their way to new hampshire tonight. a very tight race on the democratic side, a virtual tie between bernie sanders and hillary clinton. for bernie sanders, if he wins tonight, then heads into new hampshire after winning iowa where he has a big lead, suddenly the complexion of the race begins to change and it becomes very interesting. still a large hill for bernie sanders to climb but it definitely will make the race very interesting to watch. it could be a late night for both those candidates. iowa has claimed a couple of casualties, martin o' malley and mike huckabee have said that they have suspended their campaigns and will not be moving on to new hampshire. ted cruz wins the republican i

victory in iowa? it' s a bit of a republican reset button for new hampshire. shelley: what does it mean for ted cruz for his chances in new hampshire? scott: remember the last two i will caucus winners, huckabee and rick santorum could not parlay that into a victory here in new hampshire. it doesn' t necessarily mean crews will do well here. shelley: and a big night for marco rubio. >> he is the establishment pick among the four republicans running. he' s had a very good night and will make a lot of headlines. shelley: martin o' malley is out along with huckabee tonight. let' s talk about hillary clinton, still too close to call in that race. what does it mean in iowa? scott: they split the state in

new hampshire gets too may be redefined the race. bernie sanders has the lead in the polls right now so we will see what happens. in south carolina, hillary clinton is very strong and not expected to lose their a matter what. shelley: scott spradling, we really appreciate it. it remains to be seen what happens in the general election, but in the last 4 decades, iowa hasn' t had a strong track record picking presidents. only 3 caucus winners have gone on to win the white house. jimmy carter in 1976, george w bush in 2000, and barack obama in 2008. tom: tonight the focus is already shifting to the granite state as a trio of republican candidates get a head start on the final push toward february 9. jeb bush, chris christie and , john kasich are all here to stay for the next 8 days. they were here today as well. wmur political reporter adam sexton joins us now with a wrap up of the day on the first in

news 9. tom: the new hampshire attorney general is sending out a warning to all the presidential campaigns tonight about a state law for bidding them from leaving prerecorded political messages for granite stater' s who are on the national do not call list. it also applies to calls initiated by live callers. the attorney general' s office is reviewing a complaint against the john kasich campaign by an amherst man who is on the do not call list. this week in the republican candidates will meet on stage one last time before the primary. wmur and abc news are sponsoring saturday night' s debate at saint anselm college. it begins at 8:00 right here on wmur. we will have complete coverage beginning with a special edition of news 9 at 5:00 and a full wrap-up starting at 11. shelley: coming up tonight, letters are revealing details about aaron hernandez'

shelley: ted cruz has won the iowa caucus with 96% of precincts reporting, he has 26% of the vote. donald trump has 24%.

for the democrats, it' s still a very tight race. hillary clinton has a slight lead over bernie sanders and both are just below 50%. martin o' malley and mike huckabee are both suspending their campaigns after tonight' s votes. tom: tonight, hundreds of people weighed in on a proposal to establish a bobcat hunting season in new hampshire. shelley: at a public hearing, people argued for both sides of the issue. wmur' s mike cronin was there. he joins us live with reaction from concord. mike bobcat hunting was outlawed : in new hampshire more than 20 years ago because the animals were nearly wiped out. but now the state says the population has rebounded. a state plan to establish a bobcat hunting and trapping season in new hampshire brought strong emotions to conquer. >> stop hunting for cats. mike: hundreds of people went to the statehouse monday night to voice their opinions on fish and game' s proposal to issue 50 bobcat permits through a lottery process. bobcat hunting hasn'

in the granite state since 1989. opponents of the plan call it inhumane. >> they do not deserve to be trapped, set there for days, no shelter, no water, no food, and have other animals attacking them because they are vulnerable. >> i don' t think the time is right. we are premature in our efforts to try and manage a population that is just getting back on its feet. mike: supporters say there are enough bobcats to support a limited hunt. they also argue that neighboring states have bobcat seasons. >> we hope that you pass this so we can start taking cats and quickly show the public that there' s a lot more cats out there than they realize. >> we, as sportsmen, feel you have an obligation to vote yes, in favor of having a bobcat season. a vote no would be a vote against the very principles that we, as a nation have fought and died for. mike: if approved the proposal

a big win for ted cruz tonight. we will come back to him shortly when he comes to the podium. mike: a beauty out there today, low 60' s in parts of southern new hampshire. nowhere close to where we should be this time of year, but we were close to some records. sunshine, high clouds but dry and lack of snow continues across a good part of southern and central new hampshire. the highs for the day, 50' s and lower 60' s. the normal 32. more typical of what we get in mid to late april out there. it' s cooling down, upper 20' s to around 30 in the upper valley. elsewhere 30' s and a couple of low 40' s paying on it manchester and along the coast. not all that cold tonight,

near 30 along the coast. a relatively warm start to the day tomorrow. tuesday will not be nearly as warm as we saw today as cooler air is beginning to drift in from the west northwest. it looks like a beautiful tuesday, sunshine and low to mid 40' s in southern new hampshire. big change in the weather occurring out west right now. a mix of rain and snow beginning to move into iowa and it looks like as we go through the day tomorrow it will make its way into the great lakes states and approach as we go into wednesday. the question remains, what happens across the granite state early on wednesday morning, because it will be a sunny tuesday. as you can see on futurecast, there' s a light wintry mix breaking out just in time for the morning commute. some computer models back off until 9:00 or 10:00 and others bring it in around 7:00 or eight plot. it could be a little dicey on
