underway right now. announcer: no one covers new hampshire like we do. now, wmur news 9 at 5:00. adam: it is a frigid holiday weekend across the granite state. it' s 14 degrees in the queen city now and 16 in portsmouth. good afternoon, i' m adam sexton. stephanie: and i' m stephanie woods. the cold temperatures with the gusty winds tonight can cause frostbite in only a few minutes. for a better look at these dangerous wind chills lets check in with meteorologist hayley lapoint. hayley: the temperatures for manchester and portsmouth not that cold when you consider we could easily be below zero in those places now. the wind is what is making it worse. up north, temperatures are already below zero. when you factor in these winds and gusts near 30 and 40 miles per hour, here is how it really feels on the skin. 12 below in portsmouth. feels more like nine below in concord in manchester.

s below the wind chill toward littleton and whitefield. here is what you can plan on tonight if you have plans to go dinner tonight. bundle up. temperatures easily going below 9:00 tonight. with the winds, you can take off 10, 20, maybe 30 degrees. that is how it will feel. i will talk about the rest of the weekend forecast and when we might get warmer air, i ahead. stephanie: thanks to the bitter cold temperatures, many planned events around the state were held without any problems this weekend. adam: and one of those events includes a special hockey tournament in londonderry which is going on right now. wmur' s kristen carosa is there with the details. are they happy about this arctic blast? kristen: people are grateful for the cold weather. organizers were worried this would not even happen.

now the conditions are perfect just in time for the event and the night annual event is being held for dan smith' s daughter, samantha, who passed away in 2004. money will benefit her foundation. a touching ceremony was held this afternoon before the event. 12 teams and dozens of people are hitting the ice for samantha, bundled up. he says he prayed for chilly weather so this event could happen. and thankfully, he got it. >> we have 12 different teams with 12 different sponsors and we have 3 different divisions, we have an over 50, we have a pink and purple which are samantha' s favorite colors, we will have three champions by the end of tomorrow. the roy family has been volunteers, we couldn' t do this without a herd of people. kristen: and i can tell you that herd of people are bundled up we will have much more from londonderry at 6:00.

carosa, wmur news 9. adam: thank you. on a different front cold was an - , issue for first responders in manchester who had to evacuate a large apartment building as they knocked down an apartment fire. what could have been a multi-alarm emergency was handled quickly due to crews being in the right place at the right time. dozens of neighbors in a manchester apartment building found themselves out in the cold saturday morning after a fire broke out. >> i was in the bathroom, actually, shaving all of the sudden i smelled smoke didn' t smell like a fire, i went out in the hallway and there was just smoke covered. adam: people in concord street saw the smoke. >> it was thick black smoke coming out, so i immediately ran over and started knocking on doors, making sure people could get out, you know? adam: firefighters were wrapping up from another emergency a block away. >> engine 11 was right around the corner clearing another call . they got here, smoke coming from

adam: that news will likely play into the campaign in 2016. mirror. path to victory for donald trump and bernie sanders. we have mr. sanders' political director with us. all summer, the narrative was how they translate the crowds and enthusiasm into votes. how did you do it? >> we had a huge amount of volunteers that spread out across the state. we had a wonderful staff that worked extremely hard every day. we had over 100 step people. we' ve 18 offices around the state. we grew systematically throughout that time from june through february to put that ground organization together and make sure we were able to capture the enthusiasm of all the voters and gather this unprecedented landslide for a candidate in the democratic primary.

were you poll skeptics all along? a lot of people thought it could not be that big of elite. even the campaign saying we expect this to be close. did you have any suspicion or belief it was going to be 22 points? >> it is sort of a cliche but true that the only poll that counts is on election day. on primary day, we did win that big poll. we cannot allow ourselves to believe the polls because we had to work from behind. clinton' s organization in the state and a lot of people that worked on that campaign our friends of mine. they did a terrific job. we always knew we were up that was extremely skilled. adam: one of the characteristics of senator sanders that seems so appealing to people is he does not change. he does not move here and there with the political winds. we like to say in new hampshire that new hampshire makes candidates better president of

the changes them in some ways. did you see that? is he a better candidate for having competed here? >> for sure. iowa and new hampshire made him a better candidate. he honed our message. not only did we have a terrific message that spoke to people across the country, but we have a great messenger. people love bernie. there' s something likable about the guy and how consistent he has been through the years he has been in politics. you have got to love him. he is my guy. adam: do you think someone else same message? the message for suc -- the balance? does it have added weight? >> we will find out. all of the candidates in the democratic party are adopting our message because it has been so successful. in new hampshire, we are going to continue to build our organization and work to make
