lawmakers start discussing a replacement. >> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now wmur "news 9 daybreak." erin: good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm erin fehlau. sean: good morning. once again we're waking up to cold temperatures. we have a number of school announcements and mostly delays. not only do we have cold weather, but another storm system. kevin: looks like we get just about everything. snow to wintry mix to rain and wind. all of that focused through tomorrow and tomorrow evening. for the here and now, another bitterly cold start. the two below that you are going to see in portsmouth tieing a record low for this date set back in 1987. we have the next storm system approaching. morning sunshine to afternoon clouds. a few flakes late in the day.

this evening moving from south to north. one to three inches of accumulation. we transition to winter mix and rain and wind tomorrow. we want to look at your morning ride with deb davidson. good morning, deb. deb: good morning. we're seeing some light volume throughout the state due -- mainly due to the holiday. traffic is moving very well throughout the state with no major problems whatsoever to slow you down. all of the major roads are up to speed. if you are heading out, you may want to start your car ahead of time. if you are commuting in to massachusetts at the early hour, no major problems. it is cold out there. all of the roads in the state are up to speed and moving well. this report is brought to you by duncan donuts. from the traffic

davidson. sean: we start with breaking news out of farmington. erin: police were first called to the area of maple and high street about 11:30 for a person that was barricaded inside and refusing to come outside. several roads were closed. police say the situation ended about 3:30 this morning. and that one person is now in custody. we hope to learn more about this case later on today. sean: the aerial tramway at cannon mountain will be closed as crews work to make repairs after dozens of people got trapped yesterday. we have exclusive video showing the rescues. just before 2:00 yesterday afternoon, two cars suddenly stopped due to a drop -- problem with a service brake. there were 38 people. after a couple of hours they all repelled the 40 feet down to the ground. no one was hurt. cannon provided hot food and drinks to everyone who was trapped.

to return another time. mbta crews worked to make sure the trains were rolls. several rails broke yesterday due to the extreme cold, forcing some service to be halted. there are temporary rares in place with permanent fixes coming soon. trains were kept in tunnels overnight to limit the exposure to the cold. erin: a man from northern vermont is dead after falling through the ice over the weekend. 23 yield william fournier was fishing with friends when his truck hit a pressure crack on the ice and broke through. officials say it appears he was able to climb out and started walking for help. search efforts failed. >> when he climbed out, he was wet. given those frigid conditions, that would explain why the heat -- devices were not able to locate his body anywhere.

giving off any heat. erin: fournier's body was found on the ice about 100 yards from his truck. services for a teacher when a manhole covered slammed through her teacher. caitlin clavette was an art teacher in milton, massachusetts. since the accident, massachusetts d.o.t. has inspected more than 900 manholes. sean: the athletic director informed the northeast ten conference of the decision to cancel franklin pierce hockey season. in a statement the university president, andrew card, says the incident is not who we are. schools we were scheduled to play and the hard working student

erin: the body of antonin scalia is being flown to virginia after his death in texas. causes. now a political battle is shaping up surrounding picking bench. megan hughes reports. reporter: justice antonin scalia transported to virginia after the final vacation. was cut short. he died in his sleep. >> he was totally peaceful. he went to sleep and didn't wake up. reporter: the political fallout less than peaceful. within an hour of the supreme court con filming the death, mitch mcconnell declared the vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president. president obama made it clear he's ready to move. reporter: i plan to fulfill my constitutional responsibilities to nominate a successor. reporter: both parties have reason to fight, because of how it could shift the balance.

because of the cold. kevin: we continue on with the temperatures even though they are bitterly cold. in mt. washington only at four below zero. that's an indication that there's some warmer air coming in. take heart as you warm up the car that we have the cold temperatures out there early this morning. as we go through the day today, we'll continue to see things starting to moderate a bit. upper taens up north to 20's elsewhere. those will be climbing up near the freezing mark in southern areas by later on tonight and in to the 40's to lower temperatures are going to climb a solid 60 degrees in a lot of locations as we've today. all the way through tomorrow evening. it is going to be a steady climb. it will come with the approaching. you can see the first burst of light snow. time now to move in to southern new hampshire sometime late this afternoon to the evening. not expecting any problems for the evening commute. i don't think it will be heavy enough to cause any problems as far as that is concerned. as i mention, four

you can see relatively speaking that is fairly mild. we're going to continue to see the milder air creep in. two below tieing a record low. still another hour to go there. 11 below in concord. as you can see, light winds this morning compared to the wind that we had through the weekend. not providing much of a wind chill. you'll notice the five to ten degrees warmer and milder or higher than we were yesterday at this time, i guess. while in other spots, we're as much as ten to 15 degrees higher than we were yesterday. you can see the coldest of the air still located over the northeast. you can see the moderating trend from where the storm is coming from. the track of it to the west leaving us on the system. mid teens to mid 20's for us today. a fairly light wind out of the southeast with an increase in clouds from southwest to northeast. as i mentioned, any sort of light snow holds off. flurries around in southern new hampshire. we're not expecting much in the way of

that moves from south to north later on or ending as a wintry mix before transitioning over to rain showers. temperatures in the 40's to even lower 50's. line of rain fall with some scattered showers ahead of that coming through later in the day. could even be some wind involved with this before pulling away. then with clearing skies and a little bit of a breeze for us on wednesday. temperatures as this kind of scours out the arctic air through the end of the week. this is only the game in town as far as any sort of bitterly cold air is concerned. temperatures working back from the upper teens to mid 20's. a general two to four inches of accumulation. we've added the higher elevations a few inches. a general two to four inches of snow across a good part of the state before eventually going over. it is going to be a wintry mix or rain and wind tomorrow. temperatures up in to the 40's to even some lower 50's. as you'll notice behind that system not too bad. we're in the 30's to

>> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now wmur "news 9 erin: good morning. we're waking up to frigid temperatures. it is below zero in many places. looks like we're in for a warm-up tomorrow. sean: along with snow. it is going to get all mixed up. kevin will talk about that in a moment. first the top stories. we're following a developing story out of farmington. an hour's long standoff at the intersection came to an end this morning when one person was take taken in to custody. officials say a mechanical problem

stuck leaving 48 skiers stranded. and several schools are starting late this morning because of the cold temperatures out there. you can see a list of those delays scrolling along the bottom of your screen or on the web site at wmur.com. erin: temperatures were so cold yesterday. a friend of mine had a window that crack in the cold. kevin: were there a lot of areas that didn't get out yesterday. today we finally do so. upper teens to mid 20's today begins the improvement that we'll have over the next 36 hours. as a matter of fact by later tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night, temperatures in the 40's to lower 50's. that's not going to help you early this morning. it is single digits below -- and even double digits below zero. along with it. it helps. through the afternoon with morning sun to afternoon high clouds temperatures in the teens and 20's with light snow developing late in the day. i don't think there's any impact for the evening commute. light snow later on tonight. erin: all right.

around 11:30 right near root 11. we're told the scene was cleared around 3:30 when one person was taken in to custody. no further details are being released. we'll keep you posted as we learn new information. dozens of skiers are home after being stranded on cannon mountain. erin: they were stuck 40 feet in the air. they were stranded for hours before rescuers were able to repel them down to the ground. paula traci was one of the people trapped inside the tram. >> it was very freightenning. they did a professional job. i was happy to get back on the ground. erin: as i think everyone was. paula made it down safely as did the rest of the 47 passengers. officials at cannon mountain say a

caused two cars on the aerial tramway to suddenly stop just before 2:00 on sunday afternoon. they say there was a service brake issue which prevents the motors from working. seven people were rescued from the stuck car near the top of the mountain and then ski patrol and first responders evacuated 41 car. cannon notified the state as it continues to troubleshoot the tramway problem. meantime the tram is closed today and cannon says repairs will likely take a couple of days. sean: it was cold up there. cold weather is taking a toll. they stalled flights on sunday. jetblue said the cold affected its ability to fuel the planes. officials say they have not seen any delays due to the cold. when you look at the departure board, you can see just about every flight is on time this morning. erin: an investigation is underway this morning in to what

damaged a home in hillsborough. the fire broke out at a home on englewood drive. it is helping two adults. the agency says in new hampshire and vermont a family is displaced by a disaster, usually a home fire, by about every 20 hours. sean: we could learn more details about an assault that left a man with life threatening injuries. early saturday morning the victim was brought to franklin regional hospital before being transferred to hitchcock medical center. the suspect, 22-year-old hunter pescinski, is being charged. no more information, but more is expected to come later this week. erin: verizon wireless arena implemented new security this weekend. you can still bring in purses or small bags. they will be searched. people entering the arena on sunday didn't seem to mind the

the officer was shot point blank in the face while responding to a robbery at a convenience store on saturday night. the man believed to have shot him and a man suspected of helping the shooting suspect in the robbery are now being questioned by police. four members of a british indie rock band were killed. the manager of the band was also killed in the crash. their car was going over a bridge when it plunged in to a canal. they released their first single "swings and water slides" last year. they were scheduled to play the stonned southwest music festival in austin, texas next month. sean: police seized about $900 million worth of meth that was smuggled in. they say the drug also

this is the largest liquid meth bust. four suspects have been arrested. erin: police in california are asking for the public's help in solving a disturbing crime. two people were walking on the golden gate bridge friday afternoon when they were hit with blow darts. the pedestrians were not seriously hurt. they are now being tested to ensure they were not coated with any chemicals. sean: boston police are asking for your help in tracking down a missing man. zachary mar was last seen in boston. he was out with his family celebrating when he stepped outside to make a phone call and could not get back inside. as the bar empty out, he was nowhere to be found. his disappearance is out of character and he just wants his son home no questions asked. >> just come home. it is okay. it is going to be fine.

that's it. just come back. please. sean: zach's dad said his son works full time and is going to school. anyone with information is asked to call harvard or boston police. erin: a 30-year-old missing persons case has been solved by the person at the center of the investigation. a man in canada finally remembered who he is three decades after suffering head trauma and forgot his identity. he was 22 when he vanished back in 1986. last month he told a social worker he remembered his name. dna tests confirmed his identity. he's now waiting to reunite with his family, including his mother who says he's overwhelmed by the news. sean: in sports, the bruins were after their third straight win on sunday in detroit.

in manchester. erin: short winter. that. tough to take early in the morning. certainly it is another one of those morning where you want to have the car and bundle the kids up as they head out early this morning. we're going to start with sunshine today. that should help. temperatures in to the afternoon climbing in to it is certainly better than the single digits a lot of areas saw yesterday. the light snow will start to push in just after sunset this evening. it could see a quick two to four inches of accumulation by the time you wake up tomorrow morning. by then it will have lightened up. any sort of snow and wintry mix tomorrow morning goes over to rain, wind, and along with that, temperatures jumping in to the 40's to maybe even lower 50's tomorrow afternoon. it is a huge difference from the weather that we've had had out early this morning and over the course of the weekend. it is with clear skies initially. a lot of sunshine and a much lighter wind. this isn't much of a wind chill out there this morning.

in to the afternoon, these clouds start to approach. there might be a couple of flurries, i don't think it affects the evening commute. i think the snow starts to move in after 6:00 or 7:00 this evening. temperatures right now in the single digits below zero. just about statewide. two below in portsmouth. tieing the record low. there are eight to 12 below zeros not far inland and up and down. you get toward the monadnock. a lot of this elevation dependent now. the higher elevations are starting to warm up as the warmer air starts to move in. some of the sheltered valleys still left down in to the teens to below zero. not much of a wind chill. high temperatures in to the afternoon. upper teens to mid 20's. temperatures hold steady or start to climb. the temperatures as highs this afternoon will likely be warmer by the time we wake up tomorrow morning. increase in clouds through the afternoon. again there could be a

around pre 5:00 or 6:00. that's not going to cause any problems. it is thereafter we start to see the accumulation lift in from south to north. it may end or wind down or taper off slightly. down to a wintry mix or rain as the warmer air moves in. the track of the system is to the west. there will be a band of rain coming through. there may be a couple of stronger wind gusts to come with this late in the day tomorrow and in to tomorrow evening. skies will start to clear early wednesday morning. maybe a few snow showers for the mountains. temperatures not too bad behind the system. no huge blast of arctic system. end of the week, temperatures should be in the 30's to lower range of the 40's through friday. temperatures this afternoon in the 20's. you notice after a dip early this evening as the snow pickses up, the temperatures start to climb. as a matter of fact, we're likely above freezing in southern early tomorrow morning. a general two to four inches. we've added the five inch amount maybe up through the foothills that have the chance of picking up more.
