several schools have delays. find them at the bottom of your screen at the wmur.com. it is so cold. they are going to wait for things to warm up. we have weather on the way. kevin: temperatures single and double digits. likely we're in the 40's and 50's. it is a huge difference and all of that coming and being dragged up by a storm system that approaches later on this evening. we start off in the single and double digits below zero this morning. a much lighter wind. there isn't as much of a wind chill this morning. clouds approaching later on this afternoon and eventually some light snow approaching late in the day and in to the evening. highs today upper teens north. mid 20's in southern areas. temperatures keep rising later tonight. that means a mix to rain and wind for the day tomorrow. much more on that with your forecast in a bit. let's look at your monday morning ride here. we're joined live by deb davidson. good morning, deb. deb: good morning. right now it is a nice, quiet ride throughout the state no matter

details later on today. sean: the aerial tramway at cannon mountain will be closed as crews work to make repairs as dozens of people were trapped yesterday. erin: we have exclusive video inside the tram showing people repelling 40 feet to the ground. after mechanical problem left them stranded for hours. ray brewer is here now with more on what went wrong and that exclusive look at the rescues. ray: officials say it could take a couple of days to make all of the necessary repairs for the tramway at cannon mountain in franconia notch. it was just before 2:00 yesterday afternoon when two cars suddenly stopped. one near the top of the tramway, one near the bottom. cannon officials say there was a problem with the service rate. wmur has exclusive video showing the situation inside. there were 48 people on board the trams, including a family with an eight-month-old baby. blankets were provided for everyone. after a couple of hours,

feet down to the ground, including paula tracy, on the lower tram. >> it wasn't too bad at first. we thought it was going to be a quick fix. but it ended up taking an hour and a half to two hours. >> it was 40 feet. very frightening. they did a professional job. i was happy to be back on the ground. ray: no one was hurt. cannon provide hot food and drinks and each guest got a voucher to return another time. they are working with the state to figure out what went wrong and make sure it doesn't happen again. the tram is closed today. in the studio, ray brewer, wmur news 9. sean: all right. thanks. mbta crews in and around boston worked through the night to make sure all trains will be rolling this morning. several rails broke due to the extreme cold forcing some service to be halted for a couple of hours. there are temporary rails in place with permanent fixes coming soon.

orange lines were kept in tunnels to limit their exposure to the cold. erin: a man from northern vermont is dead after falling through the ice over the weekend. 23-year-old william fournier was fishing with friends near the canadian border when his truck hit a pressure crack on the ice and broke through. it appears fournier was able to climb out and started walking for help. search efforts failed. >> when he climbed out, he was wet. given those frigid conditions, that would explain why the heat -- the devices were not able to locate his body anywhere. at the time, he wasn't giving off any heat. erin: fournier's body was found on the ice about 100 yards from his truck. sean: we could learn new details about hazing that forced the school to cancel the last three games of the men's ice hockey season. the athletic director informed them of the

that two below tieing the record low for the port city this morning. much more on the system approaching later on this evening coming up. erin: the dover community gathered for a fundraiser honoring lieutenant christopher dewolf, a firefighter who tied in an on-duty car crash in 2005. sean: the golfing event helped raise money for the scholarship fund that helps train the next generation of firefighters. the fund has given out $20,000 over the years. his son says the fund has helped their family they are always touched fundraising events. >> you know, it is minus five degrees and the wind chill is freezing. on. education was huge with him. you know, obviously with the increase in price of tuition it is not always easy. being able to help people kind of start that journey is nice.

sean: a man in oregon is recovering after getting pulled in to a woodchipper. his leg tripped the safety bar and shut the machine off just inches. he suffered a broken leg and some cuts. he is expected to be fine. a scary situation. a man says he survived by a week in a desert by drinking melted snow. phillip besanson was driving his truck. he stayed where he was and drank snow until a highway patrol officer happened to find him by accident. erin: search efforts are over in taiwan a week after a powerful earthquake caused a skyscraper to collapse. one person was pulled alive on saturday. the death toll is 116. 300 were saved and 96 were in the hospital. three executives with the company that built

"deadpool" is based on a marvel comic. it is a record breaking. easily passing "fifty shades of gray." i know you are interested. it was more than double that was predicted. help cover child care costs. they would get ten years to pay the deferred taxes once the child reaches school age. child care costs on average more than $10,000 a year in new york. a lot of kids have the day off today. many others have two-hour delays because it is so cold. kevin: temperatures in the single digits. second straight morning. it is only -- only four below on top of mt. washington. while that doesn't seem like much, for 6,000 feet it is warmer than yesterday morning. the trend occurs first and for the rest of us through the day today. we're going toaster off in the single and double digits below zero this morning. eventually at its warmest point tomorrow evening we're in the 40's to lower 50's. there's a huge change in our weather. all with the storm system coming in. it is doing to be precipitation. morning we have the clear skies. if anything, we'll start to see a few high clouds

it is the next system that arrives a couple of snow flakes late in the day, likely not producing any effects for the evening commute. it would likely start to accumulate after 6:00, 7:00, 8:00 tonight after it moves from south to northed as this push of the storm system makes its way toward us. until then we're talking the bitterly cold temperatures. teens below zero up north. now up to two below on top of mt. washington. we're in the teens below zero farther west through the monadnock region. not much of a wind chill. that certainly helps as you walk out the door. you can warm up the car as well. temperatures running anywhere between five degrees above where we were. i don't want to say warmer than yesterday. from there, we're going to look for temperatures to continue to moderate. by the time we get to tomorrow afternoon, highs in the 40's to up near 50. today we'll settle for temperatures in the teens to mid 20's. which is only about five or ten degrees colder

light winds and sunshine, that feels pretty good. here come the clouds ahead of the next storm system. there might be a couple of flurries late in the day. i think the evening commute in most locations away from southern new hampshire goes off without a hitch. any sort of flakes that we see flying shouldn't affect the evening commute. it starts to kick in and navigates northward. there may be a little bit of a break toward morning and maybe in time. you could notice the temperatures by early tomorrow morning. 30's elsewhere to maybe even near 40 in a couple of southern locations. only upward from there. what is the early snow or wintry mix likely goes over to rain. the rainfall could be heavy at times later tomorrow afternoon and evening before pulling away. kind of scours out the arctic air and keeps us at or above average for the end of the week. below zero this morning. low to mid 20's. quick burst of two to accumulation a possibility.

a standoff came to an end when one person was take none to custody. cannon mountain is working to repair the tramway after 48 skiers were stranded. several schools are starting late this morning because of the frigid cold temperatures. you can see a list of the delays scrolling at the bottom of your screen or on the web site. erin: the cold is causing all kinds of problems. the rails in boston for the t were breaking yesterday. kevin: we're not equipped for temperatures running 20, 25 degrees below zero. you start off this morning with clear skies. there's a lighter wind and not much of a wind chill. we start to moderate in to the afternoon. upper teens to mid 20's today. with the southerly and southeasterly breeze over the next couple of days, temperatures only trend upward. even later tonight, temperatures will be rising. by tomorrow afternoon, we're talking temperatures in the ho's

now back to the developing story in farmington. an hour's long standoff came to an end early this morning. sean: the situation started around 11:30 last night right near route 11. we're told the scene was cleared around 3:30 a.m. when one person was take none to custody. at this time, no further details. we'll keep you posted. more than four dozens skiers are home after being stranded on the tramway. erin: exclusive video shows the skiers 40 feet in the air. hours before rescuers were able to repel them to the ground. paula tracy was one of the people trapped inside one of those trams. >> no, she's fine. erin: you can see she made it down safely as did the rest of the 47 passengers on the tram. ray brewer live in our

do we know how that tram or both trams got stuck? ray: officials at cannon mountains are telling us that the mechanical problem caused the breakdown. they say there were some tense moments as they lowered all 48 people on board. there was never any panic. >> you want to detach from the white rope. ray: this shows the view from 40 feet aboveground. one by one people were lowered to safety. two cars on cannon mountain aerial tramway suddenly stopped. >> they swung hard and back. we knew there was a problem. >> it wasn't too bad at first. we thought it was going to be a quick fix. it ended up taking, like, an hour and a half to two hours. ray: seven people were rescued near the top of mountain. ski patrol and first responders evacuated 41 people from the bottom train. >> there was very -- it was frightening.

job. i was happy to get back on the ground. ray: wmur escape outside editor, she said a family was on board with their eight-month-old baby for a sight skiing trip. a mountain employee took off the coat. >> the baby went to sleep. that was great. ray: once they were safely on the ground, all 48 people were brought inside, given blankets, hot food, and drinks. no one was injured. >> this is my minute winter. first evac that we've done live. ray: it wasn't the cold temperatures, but it was a service brake issue. >> we run a tram inspection of every tower. all of the moving parts every single morning. regardless if they are going to operate for the public that way or not. ray: cannon notified the state. the tram is closed today and cannon says repairs

couple of days. in the studio, ray brewer, wmur news 9. sean: thanks. cold weather is taking a toll on airline passengers as well. stalled flights out of logan airport on sunday. the cold affected its ability to fuel the planes. officials at the manchester airport say they have not seen any delays due to the cold. here's a live look at the departure boards. couple of canceled flights. most flights are running on time this morning. erin: an investigation in to what sparked a fire that badly damaged a home in hillsborough. it broke out at a home on englewood drive. the agency says in new hampshire and vermont, the family is displayed about every 20 hours. sean: we could learn new details about a man with life threatening injuries. early the victim was brought to the franklin

at this time, there's no word on his condition. police say a suspect, 22-year-old hunter pest pescinski has been charged. more information is weekend. new englanders are being advised to stay away from seal pups and their mothers. they give birth to pups in new hampshire, maine, and massachusetts from december to february. noaa says the pups are while the mother is off feeding and the pup is not in any danger. the agency says people should keep 150 feet away from the seals. erin: movie moviegoers got a they brought three of the kissing boothing toes to o'neal cinemas. people who donated $1 got a chance to pet and play with the animals. >> we started this last

not compare about conservative justices on the court. reporter: trump struck back. >> he voted in favor of obamacare. he got there because ted cruz pushed him like wild. reporter: on cnn's state of the union, jeb bush took a more measured tone. >> i think president obama is going to submit a nominee. in all likelihood, the person will be out of the main street and rejected by the senate. reporter: marco rubio dismissed concerns about the supreme court working with eight justices. >> the court can function with eight justices. it does it all the time. reporter: candidates accused him of ignoring the constitution. >> i don't think that mitch mcconnell has it right. the constitution is pretty clear. it is the job of the president of the united states to appoint and nominate members to the supreme court and the senate confirms.

he would nominate someone to the bench and that's exactly what he should be doing. leader mcconnell should follow the constitutional process. reporter: kim hutchinson, wmur news 9. erin: a mississippi police officer is in critical condition after being shot during a robbery. he was shot point blank in the face while responding to a robbery at a convenience store on saturday night. the man believed to have shot him and a man suspected of helping the shooting suspect are now being questioned by police. sean: a major drug bust in australia. they seized about $900 million worth of meth that was snuggled in silicone bra inserts and art supplies. the drug, known as ice, is by far the most dangerous on the australia market. this is the largest liquid meth bust in australia history. four suspects have been arrested. erin: police in california are asking for the public's help in solving a disturbing crime.

on the golden gate bridge friday afternoon when they were hit with blow darts. they were not seriously hurt. the five-inch long darts are being tested to make sure they were not coated in any chemicals. sean: boston police are asking for your help finding a missing 22-year-old man, zachary marr. he was out with his family celebrating his birthday. h stepped outside the bar and could not get back inside. as the bar emptied out, zach is no were to be found. his father said it is out of character. he wants his son home, no questions asked. >> just come home. it is okay. it is going to be fine. just come back, buddy. that's it. just come back. please. sean: zach's dad says he works full time and is going to school. anyone with information is asked to call harvard

erin: a 30-year-old missing persons case has been solved by the person at the center of the investigation. a man in canada finally remembered who he is. three decades after he suffered head trauma and forgot his true identity. 51-year-old edward latulit was 22. last month he said he remembered his name. a couple of weeks ago, dna tests confirmed his identity. he is waiting to reunite with his family, including his mother, who says she's overwhelmed by the news. sean: bruins after the third straight win. they had to play without patrice bergeron. he suffered an injury and missed the last two games. a new franchise record eight seconds in. lou we ericsson with his 19th goal.

that has allowed temperatures to fall back. the difference this morning from yesterday morning is five to ten degrees as far as the milder side if you want to call it that. at the same time, we have a much lighter wind. that's going to make it easier to take this morning. only two below. that number has continued to climb early this morning as the warmer air starts to move in first ahead of the next system. it will translate to where most of us live below 6,000 feet in to the afternoon. a lot of sunshine out there this morning. temperatures modifying back from the upper teens to mid 20's. a couple of snow flakes are a possibility pre 6:00 or 7:00 p.m. it doesn't look like it should have any affect on the evening commute. any sort of accumulation occurs after 7:00 tonight. that's when we should see a quick two to four inches of accumulation. single and double digits again. some of the lower valleys much colder than areas up in elevation

as the warmer air starts to come in first. not as many 20's below zero this morning. certainly not wind chill we had yesterday. as you pan out here, you'll notice the modifying trend. what the system does effectively is move the bitterly cold arctic air back up in to canada. we're not expecting its return behind the system through the middle or end of the week. upper range of the teens up north. going to be a quick climb. even though you start off to get back to the levels. it will be in the mid 20's. about a 30 degree jump for most locations. increasing clouds from southwest to northeast. there might be a couple of flakes around pre 6:00 or 7:00 p.m. i don't think it is going to impact the evening commute. it is the accumulation that develops rather quickly after 7:00 that will give us two to four inches. it may even lighten up overnight as a wintry mix. then tomorrow temperatures continue to climb. they should be rising

that tomorrow will be in the 40's to even lower 50's. wave of rainfall moves through late in the day after scattered showers during the day. there could be some wind. then the clearing skies sets up the chance of a couple of snow showers in the mountains. we're really not expecting a blast of arctic air behind the system. it does look like we eventually settle off in the 30's to near 40 degrees. temperatures in the low to mid 20's. watch what they do as the snow starts to develop. they start to rise. by this time tomorrow morning, a lot of areas will be above freezing. we'll continue to see the snow go over to a wintry mix and rain. that will limit amounts at a general two to four inches of accumulation. maybe a spot five inch amount. less closer to the shoreline with the southeast wind kicks in early. tomorrow the main mode of precipitation will be rain. there could be some wind involved with the front late tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night. fair skies through the end of the week and a

erin: well, welcome back. it is 6:55. updating the top stories. sean: cannon mountain is working to prepare the tramway after two cars got struck. here's ray brewer. ray: it was just before 2:00 yesterday afternoon when the cars got stuck. cannon officials say there was a problem with the service brake. there were 48 people on board. officials say it could take a couple of days to make all of the necessary repairs. erin: an hour's long standoff in farmington came to an end early this morning. the situation started at about 11:30. we're told the scene was
