brewer live a long interstate 93 in sanbornton. what are the conditions right now? ray: the precipitation has just about stopped, but the damage has already been done. take a look at the foot of our car. you can see all of the ice we have been talking about. that is going to be one of the big problems you are going to encounter on the road. the freezing rain is going to hit the ground and freeze. you can see this rest area -- a lot of these trucks have decided to wait for conditions to improve. we take a look at 93 southbound. maybe this car coming, as well, you can see the roads do remain snow-covered in spots. we did see a lot of plows, especially further south on 93. they were doing the tandem

the problems could get worse today. two schools in new hampshire are dealing with flooding. cleanup crews will be back at hanover high school after a sprinkler pipe burst yesterday, leaving three always in the gym water. in plaistow, a pipe burst at pollard elementary school. the school is closed today and online. erin: a seabrook man is dead after crashing his snowmobile in pittsburg. 30-year-old eric tatarinowicz lost control going around a corner and hit a tree. another rider started cpr, but he died at the scene. he was an experienced writer -- rider and trail conditions were good. a massachusetts man is dead after hitting a tree while skiing.

erin: 150,000 penguins have died in antarctica in the last five years since a giant iceberg blocked their primary axis to food. the once massive colony is now down to about 10,000. the penguins have to trek 40 miles to get food and many are not coming back. researchers say it is possible to colony will die out in 20 years. sean: the city of manchester is looking or someone to give the former rex theater . the city says it is open to selling or leasing the building. proposals need to be submitted to the economic development office by march 15. whole foods is planning to open a new line of stores called 365

>> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now, wmur news 9 daybreak. sean: welcome back, everybody. good morning. a very messy start to our day. we had snow overnight that switched over to rain. it is making for ic, slick conditions. erin: temperatures are below freezing. just be careful out there. we want to get right to our top stories. dozens of delta airlines passengers had to spend the night in manchester. authorities in manchester are asking for help as they continue to investigate the death of a three-week-old baby. dozens of schools are issuing

the weather. including pollard elementary school and last out. sean: we are coming out of some bitter cold. kevin: we start the day today in the 20' s. we jump in the 40' s. we are expecting heavy rain and gusty wind by later. i think mother nature has kind of done the deal. as far as anything you could possibly imagine. we are looking at the last of the most organized precipitation lifting northward. we started in the 20' s, we finished the day by 7:00 or 8:00 with highs in the 40' s to lower 50' s. sean: meantime, we are dealing with freezing rain, which always gives me a little bit of a chill. we start off with a look at

kevin: for a look at the morning drive, we are joined live by 95.7 wzid' s deb davidson. deb: good morning. the roads remain slushy and ice covered out there this morning. the crews are treating the surfaces and the maximum posted speed limit is at 45 miles per hour. right now, we have a crash on 101 eastbound and a crash on the westbound side of 101 that has the left lane blocked. a crash on 93 south is in the clearing stages. 93 south is a very slow ride all the way down to the state line. if you are getting out on interstate 89, that is a slow ride, as well. be very careful at the 93 merge at the bow junction. the crews are out treating the roads. from the wzid traffic network, i'

sean: ray brewer is also keeping an i on the road conditions for us this morning. erin: he joins us live along 93 in sanbornton. i think i wish i had a snowmobile to get into work this morning. ray: it might have made it a little bit of easier to get to work. this is the ice from the freezing rain that has formed on top of the snow. we have about four inches of snow. take a look at the highway. you can see that traffic is flowing. by. they are getting a little bit closer down to bare pavement. once again, the big concern -- take a look at the antenna -- it is the ice that has formed over everywhere. you are going to want to be

once they made it through customs, the 159 passengers were brought to area hotels, where they stayed the night. they are expected to board another flight to jfk later today. erin: more than 400 schools and day care centers are opening late or staying closed today due to the weather. pollard elementary school will be closed after a burst pipe flooded the building yesterday. there is still a lot to be done here even though the pipe has been fixed. 4-5 inches of water filled always. -- the hallways. >> we heard like train roaring and then the ceiling just totally came in and water came flying everywhere. >> we have had failed boilers. expect the unexpected. this is unique, as every emergency can be. erin: that was a dramatic start to the day. 400 students were evacuated to

they will do online sessions from home today. problems at hanover high school, as well. a sprinkler burst and put the gym and three always under a couple of inches of water. fortunately, students are on vacation this week. this week. erin: authorities are asking for help with their investigation into an infant death in manchester. a three-week-old baby girl was found dead in an apartment at 241 kimball -- 341 kimball street. this was in october. the baby was living with her mother, 30-year-old stephanie camelo. police are asking people who live in the area and may have information about the case to give a call to the manchester police department.

judge today. 52-year-old duane l' italian was arrested last week following an accident at the intersection of landing and tide mill roads. serious injuries. were factors. a man accused of beating another man so badly that he later died court today. 41-year-old eric langlais is scheduled to be arraigned on charges including manslaughter. police say he beat the victim, 44-year-old james unfonak, outside gary' s sports bar on january 31. unfonak later died at the hospital. erin: a farmington man is facing felony charges after holding a gun to his girlfriend' s head. 43-year-old ivan gagne got into a fight with his girlfriend on sunday night. he grabbed her around the neck and put a gun to her face. when officers arrived, he jumped

he was found at a friends house later. he is including charges including criminal threatening. sean: a korean war veteran finally has the metal he has been waiting to receive for decades. 83-year-old charles das esalt was on the front lines during 1953 and 1954. u.s. servicemen were barred from wearing medals given by another country, but that was changed in 1999. the metal was reissued between 2012 and 2013. a caregiver realized he was eligible and contacted the korean government, which made an exception for one more metal. >> i never expected anything like this. so, it is a big surprise for me. >> he was never one to brag about being in the service. he never really wanted to say

carolina and nevada are days away and the candidates are getting down and dirty. nikole killion as the latest campaign clash and new poll numbers. nikole: as many of the candidates slog it out today, a new poll shows donald trump running away with the lead as he takes on his closest rival. >> name-calling is not a positive thing. in politics. nikole: it is ted versus trump. >> i think he is an unstable person. nikole: the real estate mogul lashed out at the texas senator. >> we will bring a lawsuit if he does not straighten his act out. nikole: trump calling ted cruz out in a lengthy press conference over negative campaign ads. and demanding an apology for misrepresenting his positions. >> it is an amazing thing. have you noticed how rattled donald gets when his numbers start going down? he gets very upset.

the faa says in 2014 there was an average of 11 laser cases per night. that nearly doubled last year. lasers can cause pilots to go temporarily blind. erin: authorities in mexico made interesting discoveries while searching a prison where dozens of inmates were killed in a riot last week. the fight was part of a gang turf war. authorities found an array of contraband that included things like saunas, a bar, and food stands inside the walls. some luxury cells featured air-conditioners, digital cable, furniture, and aquariums. heavy machinery was brought in to haul away the tons of contraband. some drivers in ohio got quite a treat. they were able to fill up their gas tanks for pennies. >> i' ve got $.22 in and i' ve got 13 gallons so far.

this morning. we will continue to climb through the day. we get up into the 40' s this afternoon -- maybe a couple of southeastern spots reaching up above 50 degrees. you can see the heaviest of the precipitation continues to wind down early this morning and that leaves us with scattered showers through 2:00 or 3:00 this afternoon. then, this arm of moisture makes its way northward. we will move through the state. the could be a quick inch of rain and the possibility of wind gusts out of the south or southeast. we have a high wind warning posted for the seacoast and wind advisories 4000 eastern -- four southeastern parts of the state. temperatures are still below freezing.

picking up on the light drizzle left over, but it will be out there and that will be more showers trying to pop up through the day. you notice the trend. we are back up into the 20' s. temperatures have been slowly making their way upward and eventually through the 30' s and gradually up into the 40' s this afternoon and eventually tipping out with a high temperature around 7:00 or 8:00 this evening. by then, it will be raining heavily. some pockets of lighter showers out there. then it is 40' s to lower 50' s. here comes the batch of heavier rainfall. there could be a couple of gusts along that front as it comes through later this afternoon and through mid-evening. it will wrap up by midnight.
