6:00 pm
come between now and later tonight. one of the big changes of course today, that's been in the temperature department. starting off sub freezing in spots, right now into the 40's and 50's in many locales, and it all courtesy of a gusty wind out of the south and southeast. close to 100-mile per hour gusts in the last hour atop mount washington, winds picking up between 20 to 35 elsewhere, but we could see a few gusts over 40 to 45 that could certainly lead to scattered power outages. in addition to the wind we have the heavy rain, buts will the defined back end that is racing through new hampshire. one of the spots that's seen quite a bit of heavy rain over the past couple hours but is close to that back edge is salem. josh is standing by with a closer look at the conditions in southern new hampshire. josh? reporter: yes, it's been pouring buckets here in salem. as you can probably hear and see, i'm having trouble controlling the umbrella as the winds are very strong.
6:01 pm
highs as 35 miles per hour in the salem area, and the wind i is, we're getting a strong gust right now, the rain coming down heavily as well. let's take a look at the doppler radar. we'll start with a wide shot, showing you that back edge that mike was talking about that's been pushing through all of new england basically southwest to northeast. we'll show you how it's moving through, and that back end coming up to where i am in the salem area. although the rain is coming down heavily where i am, we're going to see the back end moving through, and it moves from west to northeast basically, so the eastern parts of the state last. we'll have more in a few minutes. wmur. back to you. jennifer: go get dry, thank you. and as far as the roads go at this hour, the main roads pretty much clear of snow and ice, but with all of this rain falling and the rise in temperatures, the concern now switches over to
6:02 pm
on the roads. so let's get a live look at conditions, this is on 93, well check in with mike cronin now. reporter: cold and they've been replaced by warmer temperatures and rain. but so far no issues on 93 in salem. after the extreme cold and wintery mix of the past few days, the roads are now very wet. traffic has been fine on the highway though. the department of transportation didn't have any problems plowing today, but it is keeping an eye on drainage around catch basins and culverts. the d.o.t. says the rain can have an effect on salting the road. >> salting is what we're doing, but again if you're getting rain, that can dissolve and dissipate. so people really have to be aware of the region they're in and the local conditions at the time. reporter: is there a slight chance of refreezing in parts tonight, but it's not expected to be widespread, and it's best to check the conditions in your

mike cronin, wmur news 9. tom: tonight a hired handy man client. jennifer: police say this husband and wife team are charged in connection to the theft of nearly $100,000 worth of jewelry and coins from their 70-year-old neighbor. suzanne roantree in the newsroom with more. reporter: after a lengthy investigation, 37-year-old jacob stibs and his wife lauren were taken into custody by manchester police on saturday. and tonight new developmentings in a crime that authorities say happened last summer. jacob stibs faced a judge in court on a long list of charges. >> he had over 20 charges today, 10 charges of receiving or possessing stolen property as well as theft by deception. >> this defendant and codefendant are accused of stealing sundry jewelry related items from an elderly neighbor. reporter: police say last summer jacob and lauren stibs were
6:04 pm
next-door to the 70-year-old victim. she told police that for about a month she paid jacob stibs to do some odd jobs, giving him access to her home through an open bulk head, but says she stopped employing him when he wanted to be paid in advance. >> a couple months went by and she realized she was missing some cash, that prompted her to look for her julie, and in turn she reported that thousands of dollars worth of jewelry had been taken. reporter: court documents show that more than $89,000 both of jewelry and coins were missing from her home, she believes the responsible. after calling police, the 70-year-old victim visited some local pawnshops and learned that jacob stibs had sold some jewelry to them. during a police investigation, a web based electronic reporting system used by pawnshops showed that jacob had sold 46 pieces of julie at various stores in manchester.
6:05 pm
victim's description of her missing jewelry. and those court documents go onto say that lauren stibs, who was not in court today, had told police that both she and her husband are drug addicts and that he sold the jewelry so that they could buy heroin. suzanne roantree, wmur news 9. tom: two gun stores targeted and tonight police are trying to see if they're connected. the first burglary happened in hooksett last week and now police just over the border in tyngsboro are investigating a similar break-in. wmur's adam sexton is live with reaction from wicked weaponry in hooksett. reporter: yes, tom, burglars hit wicked weaponry at the beginning of the month, now police south of the state line think they may have struck again. on february 4, surveillance cameras here at wicked weaponry recorded burglars breaking in using pry bars and bolt cutters and then stealing hand guns. monday morning a similar m.o. in tyngsboro at hitman firearms, where the suspect made a quick
6:06 pm
the manager distraught that those guns might end up in the wrong hand. >> i'm going to lose a lot of sleep. it's sad that it happened, but i are full confidence in the police departments to resolve it. reporter: we're told police departments in both communities are in communication, the owners of the respective gunshots are also trading notes to see if they can figure out who might be responsible. live in hooksett tonight, adam sexton, wmur news 9. tom: in court today the man accused of landing the fate blow outside a rochester bar. jennifer: tonight we're learning this wasn't his first fight that day or the first time this man has been charged with assault. jennifer crompton is live with the developments in this case. reporter: what we now know is that eric langlace served time for assaulting a 4-month-old and is under investigation in connection with an altercation outside a dover bar, the same
6:07 pm
41-year-old langlace wept in court while the victim's loved ones listened to the state describe what happened to the 44-year-old man. the victim and langlace had a verbal altercation in gary's sports bar, and the defendant and his group were thrown out. bouncers escorted the victim to a car, that's when langlace allegedly delivered a sucker punch, and the man fell, suffering heal injuries that proved fate. >> this was not a fleet of the moment type scenario, this was something they had discussed inside the bar, there was text messages that they were going to get this victim and that they wanted a piece of him, they waited for him and when he walked out they attacked him. reporter: langlace is being held on $25,000 cash bail. two women face riot charges, and tonight a fourth person has been arrested, charged with simple

6:09 pm
6:10 pm
tom: new tonight an alleged ins deivelt haidzing has cost the franklin pierce university hockey team the rest of its season. jennifer: administrators say the incident is unacceptable and they had no choice but to lay down the law. wmur's heather hamel reports now
6:11 pm
seem to agree. >> i'm disappointed, the university is disappointed, in their decision making. and we had to call upon that. reporter: administrators have handed down stiff penalties following hazing accusations involving franklin pierce's hockey team. >> it's a shame to see them cal sell the games for the season. reporter: the games are all canceled. >> what i can tell you is it was a violation of conduct. reporter: due to privacy they won't talk about specifics, but belief it was an isolated incident. administrators say in january a student conversation got back to a staff member, concerned by what that learned administrators did call police but ultimately the university handled the case by itself. administrators interviewed players and made their decision to cut the season short, just last week. >> we're athletes too, so we wouldn't want to represent our university in a negative way like they did. report these students think the
6:12 pm
decision. >> what they did wasn't that great. it was kind of a big deal. their punishment was right. reporter: since the investigation is ongoing, there may be other consequences. >> we'll begin talking about what times of initiatives we can it -- help ensure that it doesn't happen again. tom: we go from ice to cold to stuff. mike: it is crazy stuff. we talked about the temperature swing. the storm race as way, that can only mean more changes. tom: coming up tonight at 10:00 on me tv, france still on high alert after the paris terror attacks, why the country decided to extend its state of emergency for three more months. jennifer: now to our u local hot shot, a dose of wishful thinking, the snowman's sign says can you bring me to the beach?
6:13 pm
6:14 pm
6:15 pm
mike: we talked about the big changes, take a look at portsmouth, a lot of snow early this morning with a lot of fog. of course by then it was over to
6:16 pm
and now that snow washed away as temperatures have been climbing into the 40's, and the rain continues to fall in some spots. updated snow totals for you, 3.1 out of this particular storm before the change over in concord. so the yearly total now up to 23.4, still well below the average of 42.6 and nowhere close to where we were at this time last year. we all know about the very snowy january and february during last year. 76.8. at this time last year. as we look ahead, the latest system ready to pull out of here, rain and gusty winds will exit this evening and clearing and colder weather will take over later on tonight, that could lead to some black ice on area roads, especially well after midnight. so keep that in mind if you'll be traveling through early in the morning, bright and please an for tomorrow, colder on thursday, not bad on friday before the next weak system does approach as we go into the day on saturday.
6:17 pm
bit of snow for many, but not a whole lot. doppler radar showing heavy band of rain moving through over the past couple of hours, for a closer look at the radar in your region and the a. rain we picked up so far i'm going to toss it out to josh judge who is in salem where the winds are quite active as well. you haven't blown away yet, i'm waiting for you to lift off there. reporter: it's very possible, i've been called mary pop pins as the umbrella wants to get pushed away. the rain has been very heavy, but just beginning to come to an end. here in salem along 93, wee on the back edge, i am the back edge right here. i've had people peculiar me that many times before actually. let's take a look at the doppler radar, the back end pushing through from west to east and towards the northeast as well. so if you're to the east of 93 it's likely still raining, and in some areas raining heavily
6:18 pm
farther to the north the rain has been tapering off but it's still heavy in areas north of the white mountains, especially to the northeast and over toward areas of maine. amounts so far, depends on your location, as little as a quarter inch, and as much as .8 to .9. so a lot of rain, but it's coming to an end. the wind, though, is still gusting quite strong. so for a look at where we're heading from here, mike, take it a way for the rest of the week into the weekend him jamie: might be able to fly back home. the only concern there, even though it's tending to drive the system out of here is we could see scattered power outage, the wind could crank up over 40 miles per hour to next cup hours. but in the next couple hours steady rain is gone. so skies could actually partially clear, and with the winds turning around to the northwest that will drive in colder air, so black ice may be
6:19 pm
a fair amount of sunshine tomorrow, a few fair weather clouds, a weak disturbance up north, that will happen late wednesday night and early thursday morning. here are those winds right now, sustained from 10 to close to 25 miles per hour at the coast. again these are the sustained winds. when you factor in be the win gusts, of course it's a little higher, from 25 to 35-mile per hour gusts. there could be a few spots between now and eight or nine this evening when we get a gust over 40, and that could lead to a few scattered owrnlgs. later on tonight as the winds bank around to the west it is sub freezing by early morning. any untreated surface may glaze over with a bit of black ice, so watch for that. the rest of the pattern this week looks relatively quiet. early evening rain, then it quiets down and clears out late tonight. sunshine returns tomorrow. a few fair weather includes in
6:20 pm
bright on thursday, and colder right back to average, and a nice looking friday after a very cold start, that will be the coldest between now and the early part of next week, and then maybe a little light snow saturday and then quiet sunday through early next week. tom: my ride home last night was nasty, lots of ice. jamie: speaking of ice, big hockey game getting closer,

know who we're playing against, and hopefully lit make for a better game. reporter: pick up any secrets about the other team? >> they have a lot of good talent, yeah, it's nice to see them and have a short practice with them. >> last year this game was kind of physical, so the guys are getting together to maybe make friends before this year's game, it will be on april 2. they are wicked excited about this runner, elly purrier of montgomery, vermont. she ran faster than any other ncaa female this winter. the runner in second place is from oklahoma state. puryear is a former cross country champion, she will enter as one of the favorites to win the national title in the one mile. >> two weeks ago we tried to run bring fast, just wasn't really
