announcer: no one covers new hampshire like we do. now, wmur news 9 at 6:00. stephanie: two people are temporarily homeless after a fire burned their home in manchester. firefighters are trying to figure out what sparked the flames. good evening at thanks for joining us. i am stephanie woods. adam: i am adam sexton. mike cronin is live from the scene with new details. mike: firefighters are still here at this hour. you can see they are going through the garage sifting through the debris and taking pictures. that is where this fire started. it spread upstairs and damaged the outside of the home. a neighbor' s cellphone video shows the smoke rising from the fire just before 4:00 this afternoon. the homeowners called 911 after noticing smoke coming from the garage.

six or seven minutes to get here. luckily, no one was injured. a man, woman, and her dog are displaced tonight. there is about $100,000 worth of damage to the house. but firefighters say it is fixable. >> smoke and water damage and some fire damage. the garage is destroyed. >> it is a nice community here. everybody watches out for everybody else. i' m sure everyone will be asking them if they need help. mike: the cause of the fire is under investigation. firefighters say it is not suspicious. mike cronin, wmur news 9. adam: thank you. in commitment 2016 hillary clinton declaring victory in the nevada caucus. in south carolina, less than an hour to go before the polls close for republicans. a live look at hillary clinton

hampshire, we have had rain showers nearly all day. even some snow showers in the far northern reaches of the state. concord, you have been in and out of the showers. raindrops continue toward peterborough and hillsborough this evening. look at these temperatures. this is 6:00 in the evening after dark in february, and we are still in the 50' s. 53 in manchester. a week ago, we were below zero at this time of the night. temperatures tomorrow similar to today. not quite as mild. we will see more sunshine. i will show you the rest of the weekend' s forecast and the seven-day forecast ahead. adam: american medical response is reporting a staggering number of drug overdoses this month. in manchester alone, there have been 42. four of them happened friday within a half hour of each other. wmur' s kristen carosa joins us now more. kristen: a.m.r. says 12 of the 42 overdoses were fatal, a

month on record. and the numbers just continue to climb. emergency crews in nashua say they saw something saturday morning they haven' t seen in years. >> we actually had a person walk into the station this morning asking for help, and they had overdosed. kristen: american medical response regional director, chris stawasz, has been watching the number of drug overdoses continue to rise. >> we are continuing to see what i believe will be a record month, particularly in manchester, with the number of overdoses, more so on the number of fatal overdoses which is already in double digits for the month. kristen: there have been 42 drug overdoses since the beginning of in manchester alone. february 10 since wednesday. 12 of them were fatal. >> since we have been recording the statistics over a year ago, that is the highest it' s ever been at this point in a month. kristen: emergency crews say the main culprit of the overdoses is still fentanyl, followed by

re also seeing other drugs such as a butane cannabis, and other things that are out there like cocaine and the methamphetamines. they are still there, but certainly not as prevalent as the fentanyl or the heroin. kristen: he says narcan is being saving lives, but they are having to use more of it to be effective. >> we are seeing the average amount of narcan that is needed to reverse an overdose continue to increase, which tells us that the substances that are being used are even more potent, which is leading us to believe that it' s fentanyl behind all of this. kristen: it' s something that continues to take its toll on crews. >> i don' t like being on television every week telling people about the numbers. we need help. i don' t know what that help is, but we need to work harder than we are to solve this problem because it is not getting any better. kristen: chris just got back from a national meeting with a.m.r. he says no one else in the country is experiencing the amount of drug overdoses like we are here in new hampshire. live in studio, kristen carosa, wmur news 9.

a candia man is in custody tonight facing arson charges. the state fire marshal says 59-year-old stephen gracyalny set fire to a home on hook road in candia. he was arrested today and is being held on $50,000 cash bail. fire marshal william degnan says intentionally set fires cause over 400 deaths, 1,300 injuries, and more than $1 billion in damage each year nationwide. adam: the u.s. government wants to catch him, and today he appeared in manchester via skype. edward snowden delivered this weekend' s keynote address at the new hampshire liberty forum. he spoke from russia, where he' s been granted asylum. in 2013 snowden, a former contractor for the national security agency, went public with the full extent of secret mass surveillance programs. >> the government was warrantlessly and unconstitutionally spying on billions of people around the world and millions of people in america, and he let people know. adam: while wmur was prohibited from video recording snowden' s

stephanie: middle and high school students from new hampshire and vermont came together in concord today for the annual state vex robotics competition. adam: the day-long competition took place at new hampshire technical institute. teams battled each other using the robots they created.

across the rest of the state, it is rain. some light to moderate rainfall at this hour. this line every showers will eventually scoot toward the coastline. we will probably have a few raindrops in manchester and seabrook by overnight. you can see this low-pressure system, the center of it is north of quebec city. it continues to pinwheel down chances for rain showers and snow showers. we have one band moving through now. we might have a couple more rounds overnight. tomorrow looks bright with a mix of sun and clouds. look at the temperatures we got to today. this is incredible for february. 59 in manchester. 58 in nashua and portsmouth. even 40' s up north.
