this morning the alleged shooter, army staff sergeant, ronald hamilton, is behind bars. he faces a list of charges including first-degree murder. he also killed his wife before opening fire on arriving officers. the county prosecutor says he will likely seek the death penalty. erin: there will be a moment of silence today in memory of officer guindon where her death has hit many people in the community very hard. merrimack police officers were tasked with informing officer guindon's parents of her death. amy coveno live in merrimack with reaction from the community. amy? amy: good morning, erin. the flag here lowered to half staff in honor of officer ashley guindon and their message board here paying tribute to her service and sacrifice as well. officer guindon was born in springfield, massachusetts before her family moved to merrimack where she graduated from high school. she was also a marine corps reservist who

in forensic science before being sworn in as a police officer on friday. ken johnson says ashley guindon's death is being felt by so many year. in the 2005 yearbook, she left her classmates with this quote, live for something rather than die for nothing. >> at merrimack high school we have a motto, believe, go forward, and inspire. we'd like to believe that not only did ashley embrace that motto, but as well. >> when a fellow officer is killed in the line of duty, it affects us all in some way or another throughout the country. and, you know, our hearts go out to the family. amy: in addition to today's moment of silence, they plan to honor officer guindon at graduation this year. there's no word yet as to plans for memorial service. when we get the information, we'll be

erin: thank you. investigators are trying to identify the body of a hiker found dead on the trail between mt. adams and jefferson and figure out how he died. fish and game say that two hikers discovered the body of a white man weighing more than 200 pounds. rescue crews were not able to get the body off of the trail until early today. they didn't find anything suspicious at the scene. they will try to determine the cause of death sometime today. sean: turning to politics now and super tuesday is just 24 hours away. the biggest day in the race for the white house before the general election itself in november. hillary clinton and donald trump are poised to take control of their respective nominations. there's new controversy this morning. stephanie ramos reports from virginia. one of the states that will vote tomorrow. >> this could be it. super tuesday where 595

stephny ramos, abc news. sean: state road crew will be in new durham working to repair a large sinkhole. the department of transportation says one of the two water mains that feeds the nearby fish and game hatchery broke on sunday causing the sinkhole and forcing crews to close the road. a couple happened to be driving at the moment the road gave way beneath them. >> just a big bang. it blew out the tires on the car. it manages to keep going enough to get it out of the hole and off of the side of the road. that was it. we had to stop and change the tires. sean: neither ward or his wife was hurt. road crews hope to have it back open later today. detours are in place until then. erin: an epping man accused of driving drunk before crashing and running off is due in court today. state police say that randy sprague crashed

sean: one of pope francis' top advisors said the catholic church made a mistake allowing priests to rape for hundreds of year. they testified for hours before a royal investigator commission. the commission itself cannot file criminal charges but can refer findings to prosecutors. erin: there's great news for the monarch butterfly population. according to wildlife officials in mexico, the monarch population has grown by 255% this season compared to the number that wintered south of the border last year when the population reached record lows. conservationist say there are still dangers during the migration. they are optimistic. sean: comic books continue to rule the silver screen for the third weekend in a row.

"gods of egypt" debuted second followed by "kung fu panda." starbucks says it will open the first store in italy. coffee is a huge part of culture, and starbucks officials admit they will face challenges. we'll see how that goes. there's a new effort to regulate the size of seats on commercial airplanes. chuck schumer says he will add an amendment that's pending before congress that would require seat size guidelines including width and the amount of leg room. average seat width has dropped about two inches and leg room has been cut by about four inches since the 1970's.

the crowds are less. kevin: a beautiful sunrise. within a few hours, we're going it have a couple of showers moving west to east. that's a big difference between the southwest wind and that little bit of sunshine we start with and the west wind which will be picking up in to the afternoon. the cooler air rushing in behind it. we start off quiet. evening commute will be breezy as well. we are going to see a pretty big change in between. temperatures will jump quickly this morning. a couple of showers will move through. winds will start to turn to the west. temperatures will start falling later on this afternoon. a changeable day on the way for us. a tale of three days. a couple of showers with the overcast sky. the mildest of the temperatures and then with the west winds temperatures start to slip backward later on this afternoon. you can see we're starting off mild in some places. especially up in elevation. 38 in jaffrey. 42 in manchester. 45 in portsmouth. that wind this morning is going to start

miles ran hour. we're going to continue to see things warm up ahead of the front once the showers move through. cooler air will start to come in behind that. a lot of areas up into the 50's. mid and upper 40's and some of the central valleys. there could be a couple of south eastern spots that reach up above 60. after the showers move through after two or 3:00 we will continue to see the west winds pick up as skies clear and with a couple of snow showers up in the mountains. we're looking at temperatures and a lot of areas dropping back into the teens and 20's. there will be a lot of areas where wind chills will be in the single digits after we start the day tomorrow. good deal of sunshine tomorrow. we'll start adding high clouds later in the day. the system running in later tomorrow night and early on wednesday. likely warm enough that any sort of a wintry mix goes over to rain in the southern half of the state. it could be two to four inches of accumulation for the north country before pulling away wednesday afternoon.

"mad max: fury road" was the biggest winner taking home six oscars. leonardo dicaprio finally won his first oscar. sylvester stallone came up short losing out to mark rylance from "the bridge of spies" for best supporting actor. a lot of people seemed happy that leo finally got his oscar.

[laughter] sean: thank you very much. erin: we're following some breaking news out of china this morning. a knife-wielding attacker slashed ten children outside of the lunchtime. two of the children were hurt. all of them are expected to survive. the suspect took his own stabbings. sean: authorities are sounding the alarm about a new and deadly twist. fentanyl is being disguised as other medications. they've seen multiple cases as pills marked as oxycodone and percocet turning out to contain fentanyl. the dea says the related overdoses killed more than 700 people nationwide between late 2013 and early 2015. erin: three 12-year-old girls in

pepper. >> it is a terrible thing. i don't understand why kids have lost all respect. erin: investigators say two of the girls poured crushed pepper flakes into the teachers drink while the third distracted the teacher. soon afterwards she started suffering from a sore throat, stomach breath. it is all done in retaliation after the teacher sent one of the girls to the principal's office for dumping glue backpack. all three are facing felony charges of poisoning and tampering. sean: a boy is moving free after getting his arm stuck inside a vending machine. it began when the child tried to reach in and get cookies. he got trapped by the anti-theft mechanism. they distracted the boy by showing him cartoon. at times he had to be sedated while crews worked to free him.

erin: a navy s.e.a.l. will receive the highest military honor. president obama will present the medal of honor to edward byers jr. he worked to save a doctor that was kidnapped by the taliban. he was the second navy s.e.a.l. to burst in. the first s.e.a.l. to enter was killed. the senior chief quote gave him a second chance at life. he will be the 11th living service member to receive the medal of afghanistan. sean: turning to sports, brian were back on the home ice hosting a big game. bruins scored first in the kevin miller fired one through traffic for the fifth goal of the season. it looked good. the lightning scored the next four goals. they went on to win it 4-1. boston will host calgary tomorrow. now to race number two, the folds of honor quick

erin: i won't even make it to the finish line. kevin: clouds continuing to streamline their way in. quickly this morning. a lot of areas up into the 50's. mid and upper 40's in the central valleys and in the north country. we could spike all the way to the lower 60's in southern areas for a brief time. the sunshine will be fading behind high clouds. a couple of showers will be making their way in from the west and continuing to die out as they move west to east. eventually a wind turns from the southwesterly direction warming us up this morning to a westerly direction which starts to bring in the cool air. a quick jump later this morning only to start falling off later this afternoon. eventually back into the teens and 20's later on tonight. you'll notice a lot of 40's out from. there are also still some areas in the 20's and 30's. the lower you get in elevation, the less of the breeze. the colder air sinks into the valleys until the southwest wind gets going later this morning. you could have easily a

and above 1,500 feet. temperature in the 20's to lower range of the 30's. even in the north country, there are still a few 20's. we're going to quickly jump. a lot of areas up into the 50's. a couple of south eastern spots up into the lower half of the 60's for a brief time late morning and early afternoon on the southwest wind. a couple of showers and a lot of this depends on the exact timing of the shower to cool things off. then the west wind gets skies. a couple of snow showers later tonight. could be a brief squall out of that. that's the leading edge of colder air that starts to come in. that means tomorrow 30's to lower 40's. good deal of sunshine around. late in the day, high clouds ahead of the next evening. with that, we'll continue to see things -- continue to progress as far as the colder air is concerned initially which could mean a little bit of light snow for the north country later on tuesday night or early wednesday and a

all fares to the new hampshire food bank. they will be accepting donations abored the buses. the goal is to raise $2,000 to help new hampshire residents in need. erin: a student in seattle is using her senior project to create real life cinderella stories for dozens of people. she created the fairy god mother project to help girls in need to be able to go to the prom. she selected more than 200 dresses and is 00 pairs of shoes. they were dry cleaned for free and seamstresses volunteered to make minor repairs so that all of the gowns are in great condition. >> it is a privilege to be able to two to prom. i wanted to make that available for every girl in the community. eri: she's also providing them with accessories. she's collected dozens of evening bags and piles of jewelry. so many girls wear this for one night.
