on record for suspected opioid deaths in the city. griffith. shelley: and i'm shelley walcott. american medical response responded to 60 overdoses this month in manchester. 14 of them were deadly. and the mayor says the governor isn't doing enough to deal with the epidemic. wmur's mike cronin joins us live from manchester. mike? mike: mayor ted gatsas is frustrated appoint a new drug czar. governor maggie hassan's office says she's interviewing people to find the most qualified candidate as soon as possible. this morning manchester set a troubling record. there have been 14 suspected opioid related deaths the most for one month in the queen city. american medical response says the addiction crisis is getting worse. >> i've been doing this my whole life. i've never seen it like this before. mike: monday manchester mayor ted gatsas called out governor maggie hassan for not filling the drug czar position.

and start challenging this at the top. mike: the state's former drug left his role earlier this while on the job, he faced criticism over his performance. gatsas who is considering a run leadership is needed in the statehouse. >> we need to start telling people that if you are caught dealing fentanyl in the state of new hampshire, you will be arrested for attempted murder. we need to make that loud and clear for people, that's what's going to slow it down. mike: a spokesperson for governor hassan says she signed two bills last month to combat the crisis and there are several other measures before the legislature. in a statement her office says if mayor gatsas would like to be a constructive part of the process, we would welcome his advocacy, which we have yet to see, on the public policy steps that would actually help stem the tide of this epidemic. manchester alderman and state rep pat long says hassan is looking for someone who will work with both parties. >> personally i think the governor has stepped up to the

some change. mike: meanwhile amr says a comprehensive solution is needed from lawmakers. >> we need people to put boots on the ground, to get their heads together and to keep working at this as hard as they can, even harder than they have been because what we're doing right now is not working. mike: last fall in a wmur granite state poll 25% of people said drug abuse was the number one problem facing new hampshire. it was the first time in almost a decade it wasn't the economy. we'll see if that's still the case tomorrow at 5:00 as brand new poll numbers will be released. shelley: right now dover police are investigating what may be the city's second deadly overdose this year. last night police and emergency crews responded to summer street where a 22-year-old was found unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the hospital. they say another woman at the home also overdosed, she was treated and released. tom: now to a developing story from boston. the all-clear has just been

after a hazmat situation at their lab building not the main hospital. someone left a plastic container on a hot plate which created a haze in the room. five people were evacuated. right now, members of the merrimack police department are in virginia for tomorrow's funeral service for fallen officer ashley guindon. five members posted this photo on twitter tonight after their flight landed. they wished a safe trip to colleagues making the drive. tonight, hundreds of officers and people paid their respects to guindon in a procession. guindon, who is from merrimack was shot and killed saturday during her first shift as a prince william county police officer, she was sworn in only on friday. here in new hampshire, her alma mater, merrimack high school did a moment of silence for guindoin. now the high school community is giving. -- grieving. >> i was a teacher and coach at merrimack high school and ashley was one of my student

she was a peacemaker and i always looked at her as the glue of our team because she was always bringing people together. tom: guindon was an only child. her father died while she was a teenager. her family home in merrimack. a viewing will happen at 10:00 a.m. followed by a service at noon in virigina. no manchester. 62-year-old denise robert was murdered while taking a walk in the area of ray and carpenter streets the night of august 30. police and the fbi have times but the gunman remains at large. mike: another warm day in the granite state but the winter chill beginning to move back in. when could the snow start to move into parts of the state? let's go to mike who has the rundown for us. front now. snow showers will break it up north. not much more than a coating to

the highs today, 62 at the coast, shattering the record for leap day. the old record was a lame 49. we are beginning to cool back dune into the 30's and very low -- down into the 30's and very low 40's. temperatures lower by morning. it could trigger a dusting to an inch of snow in the form of snow showers or squalls if northern parts of the state. but there is another system back in the midwest. steady snow just south of minneapolis-st. paul that moves into parts of new hampshire tomorrow nights. in other areas it will be too warm. a wintry mix and/or rain. we'll bring a break it all down for you. shelley: tonight, portsmouth possible case of vandalism at puddle dock pond. that it's forcing labrie family skate at strawberry banke museum to shut down and cancel the last week of the skating season. sarah smith and her husband are two of several people who ventured out to labrie family skate only to find it closed for the season.

but today it's empty. shelley: the rink at the strawbery banke museum was closed today, because of an incident portsmouth police are investigating as a possible act of vandalism. >> it's very disheartening to see this i would imagine. >> it certainly is. pretty sad. shelley: strawberry banke president and ceo larry yerdon says right now, it looks like the rink was tampered with overnight. he says it looks like someone opened this valve, spilling glycol onto the ground. glycol out on the lawn. fortunately it was biodegradable so it's not damaging to the environment but, we'll clean that up. shelley: typically, the glycol runs through hundreds of feet of keeping the ice frozen. now that's it's been released, the glycol has left a muddy mess on the ground and a slushy one that cannot be refrozen. yerdon says the search is on,

>> we do have a webcam. we're examining the footage, to see what's on there. shelley: but that's cold comfort to residents like smith, who feel like a vandal has sidelined, their winter fun. >> oh, it's very frustrating. shelley: again, police are investigating. the ice rink at strawbery banke attraced more than 20,000 skaters this season alone. tom: a massachusetts man will spend 8 years in prison for transporting a teenage girl across state line for prostitution. 21-year-old andy penna was sentenced in federal court today. court documents say authorities rescued a 15-year-old girl who was engaging in prostitution from a salem hotel room in last year. an investigation found that pena was involved in the scheme to bring the girl from boston to salem for prostitution. tonight, richard germain of derry facing attempted possession of child pornography. derry police say they received a tip that germain had pornographic pictures of children on his computers inside his english range road. -- road home.

shelley: tonight, a 14-year-old boy is in custody accused of opening fire on students inside his high school cafeteria. authorities say two students were hit in the shooting and two others were hurt possibly from shrapnel or while running away. the gunman allegedly threw the weapon down and was taken into custody with the help of a k-9. none of the victims have life-threatening injuries. a big win for apple tonight, a federal judge in new york ruled investigators cannot force apple to unlock an iphone owned by a convicted drug dealer. tom: the justice department requested apple to break the phone's security code without wiping out the data so it could access the contact info of other suspected drug dealers. apple is currently being pressured by federal investigators to break into 13 iphones across the country including the iphone belonging to one of the san bernardino shooters. shelley: a former new york corrections officer will spend

now there is a secondary cold front that means business. a couple of snow showers or squalls. could be a coating or an inch or two. a couple of lakes could make it into the heart of the lake region. again, the travel plans take you up north in the next few hours, you could encounter some snow-covered roads. temperatures topped off 50-plus in northern parts of the state. a record along the coast. cooling down. gradually so. back into the upper 30's and very low 40's. much colder behind that boundary. once that clears, we will see a rush of colder air building in by morning. on average, 20's to 30 in far southeastern parts of the state. looking ahead to tomorrow, behind this front, it is high and dry as high pressure builds in.

quickly behind that, here comes the next system with snow, sleet and rain. the further knot you the better shot of getting in on some snow. just like now with snow showers and squalls. they are out of here by the predawn hours. a lot of sun tuesday. here is a look at the time line. snow anywhere from the white mountains points north. once you get from manchester through mash wa, primarily rain and maybe a little bit of sleet here. in between, upper valley, lakes region down to about concorde, a wintry mix of snow, sleet and a touch of freezing rain. not much in the way of accumulation. maybe just enough to make the roads a little bit slick. later on, during the early part of wednesday morning, it transitions to all rain. the exception, the northern part of the state, but by midday, snow is out of here.

more than a morning mess and then things do quickly dry out for the afternoon. not a whole lot of snow for the system. could be a coating to a half inch of snow or sleet before it changes over to rain. could be pockets of freezing rain into the early part of the commute. speaking of north region, a one to two, inch snow tally turns into three, four, five in the great north woods. that will make it slick for the morning commute on wednesday mostly in areas from concorde north and west. very cold behind it on thursday. another storm scoots just north of us friday. the weekend looking pretty good cold. seasonably so. maybe a few snow showers sunday. tom: all right. thank you very much. let's check in on what the
