candidates have indicated that they will be dropping out, which could potentially lead to a brokered convention, failing sean: we are getting a new look at just how critical the drug and opioid crisis has become here in new hampshire. erin: our latest wmur granite state poll shows that 40% of adults say it is the biggest issue in the state. that' s nearly three times as many people who point to the next big issue the economy. but now a new group in keene is hoping to help families affected by addiction. wmur' s ray brewer is here to explain their efforts. ray: keene hates heroin is a grassroots group which helped launch emma' goal of helping even more people affected by addiction. the circle is a support group open to caregivers of children whose parents struggle with or have died from addiction. they met for the first time last night at the keene serenity center with plans to gather every other week to provide a judgment free environment. and with the number of overdoses in the state growing at an alarming pace organizers say

affected children is key. >> the people that are raising them don' t have a lot of resources and don' t have a lot of support so that was my goal. i' ve been through this and if i can offer some help to other families, that makes what i' ve gone through a little easier to cope with. ray: turnout for last night' s meeting was small but organizers say there are many other people who could benefit. they are hoping to secure funding in order to grow their efforts to fight what they admit is a very complex problem. reporting in the studio, ray brewer wmur news 9. , erin: the zika virus has officially arrived in new hampshire for the first time. state health officials confirm that a granite state woman contracted the virus after having sex with her male partner where mosquitoes are spreading zika. the good news is that officials say she is not pregnant, has already completely recovered and poses no threat to others. >> anybody that travels should preventing mosquito bites. that includes using an epa registered insect repellant, wearing long sleeves and pants. you know, staying indoors where there'

nets possibly. erin: state health officials are urging pregnant women to reconsider any travel plans to areas where zika is prevalent , including central and south america and the caribbean. sean: one person is dead after a fiery crash on interstate 89 in enfield. state police were called to the southbound side of the highway near exit just after 4:00 16 yesterday. troopers and bystanders tried to save the driver but the flames were too intense. the highway was closed for about 45 minutes while the fire was doused. the driver' s name has not been released because police are still notifying family members. two people are dead and 7 others hurt after an suv slammed into a busy pizza shop in newton, massachusetts, last night. witnesses say the vehicle was speeding when it veered across the road and hit the building. the force of the crash forced the counter into the ovens right at the dinner rush. the driver was treated and released from the hospital. it is unclear if he will face any charges and the crash does

erin: the state medical examiner says it appears that the hiker who was found dead on a trail in the white mountains over the weekend died of hypothermia. the autopsy on timothy hallock' s body was completed yesterday. two other hikers found him on sunday between mount adams and mount jefferson. it is unclear how long his body had been there. a construction flagger who was hit by a tree more than two weeks ago has now died of his injuries. police say 77-year-old donald ferland died of severe head wounds at dartmouth hitchcock medical center. he was struck while on the job in thetford, vermont. sean: a convicted murderer is asking a judge to let him out of prison early but the victim' s family isn' t happy. eric windhurst pleaded guilty in 2005 to killing daniel paquette back in 1985. he agreed to a minimum 15 year sentence but now, he wants to get out about 5 years early , citing a law that allows for a reduced sentence. his attorney says windhurst is not a threat to the community, and has worked to improve

kevin: a wintry mix and central parts of the state. it continues to snow in parts of the north country. factor in extra time depending on where you are across the state. the wind picks up in the cold air rushes in. sean: we are in the middle of one of the strongest el nio' s on record. it has had a big impact on the weather this winter. very little snow and mild temperatures. tonight, josh takes a look at what we can learn from powerful el nio years in the past and what it means for hours ring. it should be interesting. a woman in louisiana has a story to share after surviving a tornado without shelter.

over the weekend and kyra johnson was stuck outside after making deliveries to a hardware store. she tried to take cover inside but the doors were already locked. surveillance video shows her trying to protect herself from flying debris. >> i just braced myself right here between the coke machine and i wasn' t even holding on, it was just to brace myself. after i seen the video, i didn' t know what it really looked like, i just figured i was in a tornado. erin: the coke machine johnson used for protection actually fell over in the storm but amazingly she was not hurt and no one inside the store was hurt either. sean: the ballpark is going to the dogs. the arizona diamondbacks are teaming up with pet-smart to create what is being called the first ever full-season dog friendly baseball park. for all sunday home games this season, chase field will offer dog-accessible patio seating and a play area.

erin: residents in flint, michigan, are asking a judge to make the city stop charging them for water. lawyers say the city keeps sending bills despite supplying undrinkable water for the last 18 months. the water tested positive for high levels of lead after the city briefly switched water sources but this morning the state says levels have dropped

sites. dozens of homes in far western new york have been evacuated after a freight train derailed overnight. 15 cars jumped the tracks. residents were told to leave while others are being told to stay inside with their windows and doors closed. at least one car was leaking ethanol. sean: the unemployment rate in new hampshire has dropped to 2.9%, the lowest it has been in 15 years. that is below the national unemployment rate of 4.9%. the governor says it is a sign the state is strong and getting stronger. discount grocery chain aldi says it will now start accepting credit cards in an attempt to lure in more customers. until now the company only accepted cash and debit cards. aldi currently has about 1500 stores in the u.s., including

the company is growing rapidly with plans for another 500 stores by the end of 2018. erin: mcdonald' s is introducing a couple unique new options though not here in the u.s. just yet. in sweden kids can now get happy goggles with their happy meals. the happy meal box folds up into virtual reality goggles that then link up with a smartphone. mcdonald' s also launched a virtual reality ski game at the same time to help celebrate 30 years of happy meals in sweden. in canada, australia and the united kingdom you can now get a cadbury creme egg mcflurry , combining the popular easter candy with soft serve ice cream. it will certainly provide a sugar buzz with nearly 55 grams of sugar in each serving. just one of the new creations mcdonald' s is coming out with. sean: that is an experience i

seven-year-old girl. >> she has lost her father to addiction and her mother is no longer in her life because of her own struggles with her addiction. ray: jennifer paone has been caring for her 7-year-old niece emma. her story is the inspiration for a new support group called emma' s circle which is open to caregivers of children who' s parents struggle or have died from addiction. the group' s first meeting was held tuesday night at keene serenity center. they will get together every other week to provide a judgment free environment for those who are taking in other people' s children. >> the people that are raising them don' t have a lot of resources and don' t have a lot i' ve been through this and if i can offer some help to other ve gone through a little easier to cope with. granite state poll more than half of new hampshire residents know someone who has abused heroin or similar deadly drugs.

s circle hope to provide some assistance. >> this is available for them. the support is here. and hopefully there will be other things that grow out of it for other needs that come about through this. ray: it was a small turnout at last night' s meeting but organizers say they have heard from others who just felt uneasy talking about the issue. they are hoping it becomes a stable group and they' d like to get funding to grow the organization. in the studio, ray brewer, wmur news 9. sean: our latest wmur-granite state poll is also revealing how granite staters feel about the idea of recreational marijuana. 62% of those surveyed say they support legalizing marijuana for recreational use in new hampshire. >> this is continuing to get more and more support as other states have legalized it. >> if we make it recreational kids are going to get it more

s really my issue with it. sean: more than 70% of those polled say if recreational marijuana is ever legalized in new hampshire, they would support selling it in a licensed retail outlet and taxing it. erin: the investigation continues into a crash in kensington that left two men dead and third fighting for his life. the crash happened tuesday night on route 108. police say this toyota four-runner crossed the line and hit some mailboxes and trees before flipping over at least twice. 21-year-old malachi davis, and 21-year-old hunter vars both died at the scene. 20-year-old jack perreault was air-lifted to boston, where at last check he was in critical condition. all 3 men were members of the exeter high school class of 2013. police have not yet said who was driving. sean: state police are asking for your help in tracking down a driver involved in a hit and run in westmoreland. the incident happened early monday morning on route twelve. police say a car hit a mailbox and pole and damaged a parked

based on evidence at the scene , troopers determined that the suspect car is most likely a black 2001 to 2009 volvo s-60 like the one seen here. the car should be missing the driver' s side mirror and should also have damage to the front bumper. erin: sanbornton police are on the lookout for a pair of stolen trailers. they say a 2007 haulmark utility trailer was stolen from a driveway on black brook road back on february 15. the trailer contained tools and constriction equipment. five days later a 2009 blizzard snowmobile trailer was stolen from the same road. that trailer had two snowmobiles inside. anyone with information on either theft is asked to contact sanbornton police. sean: several police officers from new hampshire traveled to virginia yesterday to pay their respects to a fellow officer who was shot and killed on her first day on the job. woodbridge, virginia, for fallen officer ashley guindon. she was a marine reservist and a

school. >> she was a member of our closer knit merrimack family and we represent the community of merrimack coming down here it is -- coming down here for that purpose. it is a much more tragic thing arms around and we certainly want to be here for the family who is dealing with this in a sean: officer guindon will be buried on monday in west springfield, massachusetts. thousands of officers are expected to be there. erin: a new study by unh finds that students attending urban schools in new hampshire are twice as likely to be given in school suspensions. researchers also found that those kids are 3 times more likely to be given out of school suspensions as students at non-urban schools. hampshire' s urban schools are and more than 15% of the state' s middle and high school students attend urban schools. sean: the skating rink at strawbery banke in portsmouth will be reopening on friday, despite being closed this week due to a suspected case of

kevin: snow through a good part of the evening and overnight hours. central and southern areas, setting of the mildest of the temperatures around midday. temperatures tumble for the end of the week.

final report on a runaway train incident that happened back in december. sean: the report says the train' s operator tied a microphone cord around the throttle and forgot to set the emergency brake when he got off the train to access the emergency bypass switch. the driverless train, carrying about fifty passengers, went through several stops before transit workers cut power to the rails. no on was hurt and the operator was fired after the incident. erin: some parents in north carolina are taking a charter school to court over its dress code. they say it is unfair that their daughters are not allowed to wear pants or shorts to school. the school' s uniform policy says girls can only wear skirts, skorts or jumper dresses except for special circumstances. the parents of three girls are now suing the school with the help of the aclu. >> it sets a precedent that she' s not as valuable as the boys are. her comfort and what she feels doesn' t matter. >> the only thing i want out of this is that my daughter has the

that is it. erin: the school' s founder told one parent in an e-mail that the 1999 columbine school shooting motivated the charter school to enforce this dress code to quote preserve chivalry and respect among young women and men. sean: turning now to sports. the boston bruins were on their home ice last night, taking on the calgary flames. and former dartmouth star lee stempniak got to make his bruins debut. he now wears number 20. the bruins scored first when landon ferraro pulled off a wicked wrister from the center of the zone. the flames tied it up in the third period. but a late penalty was called on calgary for having too many men on the ice. and patrice bergeron made them pay on the power play scoring the game winner boston won it 2-1. erin: the unh wildcats are part of a big night of college hoops tonight. they will play a home game against binghamton in the first round of the america east tournament. the game starts at 7:30. also saint anselm college and

conference semifinals. sean: a basketball team in rhode island jumped the gun on the celebrations during the state championship. the team in blue was winning when one player threw the ball into the air to run out the clock and then the celebration began. the only problem is that they did not actually win. the other team caught the ball and called timeout before the clock expired. they were able to score quickly right off the inbounds play to win the title. you have to wait until the clock gets down to zero. erin: after you celebrate, how do you compose yourself to get back into the game? some pet owners are turning to a new tool to protect their animals. it' s called a coyote vest. the vest has plastic spikes and whiskers that are meant to protect the body and neck. but one veterinarian points out that the vest does not cover all areas that a coyote might attack.

by midday, temperatures get from the mid-30' s to upper range of the 40' s. later on today, temperatures drift back. that will be with the wind gusting at times 25 to 30 miles per hour. colder air starting to build in after the midday highs between 35 and 48. snow continuing to wind down. you are left with a wintry mix. that will go over to rain before wrapping up. a couple bouts of heavy rain to get through. we see clearing skies for the afternoon and the wind out of the west. after the wintry mix in the northern half of the state and the rainfall in southern areas.

erin: you are going to be flooded with invites. march is women' s history month and in honor of that, wallet hub has released a list of the best states for women. the list was based on factors like average earnings for female workers. minnesota was listed as the best state for women. followed by vermont. new hampshire came in third. maine and massachusetts rounded out the top 5. sean: governor maggie hassan has announced the winners of this year' s what so cool about manufacturing video contest. the contest pairs middle school children with local manufacturers for a look at new hampshire' s largest industry. north hampton school took first place and the $1000 grand prize for its video with fabric maker foss manufacturing. second place went to kingswood regional middle school. kind of cool. erin: i like the music. a hospital in connecticut is using a special program to ensure that newborn babies get plenty of cuddles. the program enlists volunteers to snuggle with the infants at connecticut children'

intensive care unit. cuddlers go through extensive background checks and are all up on their immunizations including a yearly flu shot. >> it' s very comforting when cuddlers come in, the statistics would show that nurturing touch, cuddling, and infant massage is all very important to babies of all ages. erin: right now there are 36 cuddlers in the program and 56 other people are on a waiting list to become volunteers. some of these kids spend a lot of time in the hospital. sean: great job there.
