summer season bringing with it the kind of danger not seen very often here. bathers were kept to knee deep at hampton beach on monday. hermine's impact whipping up 6 to 8-foot waves, heavy wind and currents and life threatening riptides. forcing lifeguards to make a decision that happens only once every three or four years here. >> commencing tomorrow, tuesday, bathing at hampton beach will be totally reporter: donahue says he would have made the same call even if they still had a full staff after today. >> it a very unhealthy situation for any bather, even if they're fairly strong. they're putting themselves in harm's way. reporter: boats staying in harbors, seas over 4 feet not a comfortable ride, waves off shore measuring up to 9. cool temperatures perhaps keeping crowds down any way. those coming down to check out

eyeful. >> we were down here two nights ago and it was like nothing, so i said in a couple days it's going to be a surfer's dream and obviously that's the case. reporter: surfers hitting every beach up and down the coast. for them this is when it gets fun. >> you surf in new england, you wait for the storms to come up and i've been tracking the storms for 18 days now. reporter: surf shop owners warning conditions might be too much for the inexperienced. >> paddle boarding is waves and they're too powerful so they keep knocking us off the boards. reporter: lifeguards in beach buggies will patrol tomorrow to keep people out of the water. of course the beach itself will be open. i'm sure a lot of people will be down here to take a look at this surf. jennifer crompton, wmur news 9. tom: so how long can we expect the high surf advisory to last? let's go to mike haddad. mike: it's in effect until

at least through tomorrow night, early on wednesday. you see the remnants of the storm basically spinning south of the cape. right now the top winds are still up to 60 to 70 miles per hour, gusting higher in spots. but also notice the back edge of the rain or the northern edge finally creeping closer to new hampshire. so there is a chance finally to get in on a few scattered showers late this evening and overnight. winds gusting close to 30 miles per hour at the coast, here is the officially up until 6:00 in the evening. but up through wednesday and even early thursday, seas will be active, 5 to 10 feet, rough surf at the beaches and rip current likely at least through wednesday or on thursday. around these parts after scattered showers in spots tomorrow, one of the big changes follow for the rest of the week, that's ahead. jennifer: what about the ride home tonight, let's get a look at the roads. a slow drive south through bow and the seacoast.

revolution. >> please welcome a great friend of new hampshire, senator bernie sanders. josh: sanders returned the favor by once again offering hassan his endorsement in her bid for u.s. senate. >> the future of the united states senate is to a very significant degree the future of the united states of america, and that future is in the hands of the people of new hampshire. know that if nay work hard they can get ahead and stay ahead, and everybody wants their kids to have a better future than they did. that's what senator sanders stood for, that's what i'm fighting for. reporter: for sanders loyalists, seeing his departure from the national stage has been difficult. democrats are hopeful that voters are keeping their focus on the issues.

jennifer: new hampshire tourism officials say this the state's busiest labor day ever. tom: an estimated 620,000 visitors were expected in the state over the three-day holiday weekend. that's up 5% over last year. and these visitors are expected to spend an estimated $88 million during their stay. we caught up with a few tourists on their way home who told us why they made new hampshire their vacation destination. >> the woods, the scenery, nature, the possibility of seeing a bear hopefully.

labor day weekend is the second busiest travel weekend in new hampshire. jennifer: and a labor day that commission milford as the annual parade was held downtown. many see this almost 70-year tradition as a time to get together with family and friends while others view today as a chance to put summer in the books. and move on. andy hershberger was there. reporter: who doesn't love a billed as the largest on labor day in the state. for 6 years they've marched through milford, honoring the military, entertaining the kids and looking forward to the fall. >> it a beautiful day, the end of the summer, kids are back in school. nice time to reflect and get together as a family and spend some time together. >> it a home town tradition, my father lined it up for 53 years and the v.f.w. and american

war ii. and it's been a wonderful tradition for the town of milford. reporter: more than 100 groups participated in this parade, not to mention the politicians who walked the route. this year's theme was education, and who better to be the grand marshal than someone who taught health in the school system for more than three decades. >> it so exciting, i was educated here for 31 years as my 40th year. this is my sub, i have a blast, and i'm just so honored. >> it's milford, everybody comes down to this parade. it's been a tradition, my wife and i have been living in this town for 37 years this septembe. and we've always come down. i think we've hit all 37 parades. so it's a good time to come down. >> last day of summer, we're heading back to school tomorrow. i love being in new hampshire thaw can experience stuff like this all the time.

tom: runners and walkers of all abilities took part in the annual 5k run at the pease international trade port. jennifer: today was the 20th rubbing of the children's home road race, an important fundraiser for the st. charles children's home that provides behavioral treatment that children that allows them to better integrate into their school systems. >> i think with the community. we picked up some of the, they have a run for god also, group, and we picked up one of their bracelets, so it's nice to do something good for the community, it's a wonderful thing. jennifer: since its first running in 1997 the event has raised over $150,000. mike: nice and dry out there

bad, but that will start to change quite a bit, turning more humid and hotter as the week goes on. newfound lake, a few high clouds , thicker clouds at the coast, but still remains dry even at the shore. that is not the case off shore, and just off to our south through northeastern parts of massachusetts, down through essex county, a few sprinkles trying to make theiray showers that drift in along the mass-new hampshire border in places like salem up to sea brooks in the next hour or two. but the best bet of a few showers making their way in across the southern half of the state will be late this evening and then on and off during the day tomorrow. heaviest rain remains to our south and southwest, we're tracking this band of showers. it will work back in our direction but break up at times.

everyone, but there is that chance until tomorrow night or early on wednesday. for now remaining dry, gusty at the coast near 30 miles per hour. inland, 70's to around 80 degrees, very mild and pleasant across a good part of the state today. overnight tonight we dip back into the 40's north with a few clouds in southern new hampshire. and will turn more humid especially by morning, and a lot of summer sizzle still on the we're going to speeshes a good part of this thursday and friday, the humidity rises in advance of that, so it will feel more like summer. looks like it's going to be a sticky day, and breezy too. the center of hermine is actually gifting closer to new england and it will continue to wobble south of the northeast at

finally it gets the boot out to sea, but not until wednesday night or early on thursday. here's the projected track, very little movement, but it does wobble off to the west northwest right through wednesday, then makes a turn to the northeast and tends to fall apart just east of new hampshire. the winds projected only at 25 to 30 miles per hour. an impact on rough surf at the beach and also rip currents are likely through the next couple of days. in terms of rain chances, notice on future cast, yes, they are on there, doesn't guarantee that everyone gets wet. lakes region south stands the best shot and there are a couple of shower chances right through wednesday afternoon. until the temperatures rae crank up.

hampshire's best bat dog who has been fetching battle for more than six seasons. he is eight years old and ready for some rest. congratulations, ollie. as for the game against the portland sea dogs, in the fifth, down 1-0. in the next inning with a runner on, dwight smith junior smacks a single to right. that brings home jason to give the fisher cats a 2-1 lead. on a base hit, and new hampshire wins that are final game by 3-1. fisher cats finish the season with 69 wins, 73 losses, fourth in their division. the patriots had the day off, practiced yesterday. no number 12 though, tom brady is now serving that four-game suspension. for everyone else it's do your job, because this is game week, no more preseason. the patriots open the regular season sunday night in arizona against a very good cardinals team.
