>> now on "daybreak," in new hampshire votes. sean: the results are coming in. there have been a few surprises as we start to look forward with showers and a thunderstorm. the changes it brings for the end of the week with future cast ahead. >> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now wmur "news 9 daybreak." >> good morning. it is wednesday, september 14th. results of new hampshire's primary are still trickling in. two major races remain up in the air. average lot of question marks at this point.

call with 93% of precincts reporting. another race that is too close to call is the first congressional district. republicans frank giunta and rich ashooh are neck and neck. giunta has 46 and ashooh has 45% of the the weather. yesterday is going to continue today. kevin: we have a front making its way in. it could mean showers. it's been an increase in clouds up north. a broken line of showers back to the west eventually approaches. a couple of thunderstorms are a possibility along that line. 50's up north and 60's elsewhere early this

lower 80's. much more on the forecast looking into the weekend coming up. we're joined live by deb davidson. good morning, deb. deb: good morning. we have road work throughout the state. on the spaulding turnpike northbound right around the milton area, we have lane closures. also in laconia on route 3 and route 11. the everett turnpike northbound the exit two onramp is closed on t the left lane is closed. they are saying all of the road work will be wrapping up just before day break in massachusetts. all major roads are up to speed. from the traffic network, i'm deb davidson for 95.7 wzid. erin: all right. deb, thank you. the republican race for governor is still too close to call right now. however you can see that chris sununu does hold a narrow lead over frank edelblut.

jeannie forester conceit conceded last night. ray brewer to break down the governor's race. ray: good morning, sean. later this morning the g.o.p. will hold their community breakfast here. all of the republican nominees will be here. we still don't know who the nominee for governor is. as you mention, chris sununu does hold a slight lead over frank edelblut. the fact that edelblut has s m surprising. and the state rep is not conceding. they say that edelblut might make a statement later this morning. sununu pulled a lot of support. he is expected to hold on. >> it is exciting. it is exciting. look, it is close. there's still, you know, a good amount of votes to come in. they will be counted. we feel good. you've got to count all of the votes. it is part of the new hampshire way. it wouldn't be a good primary. >> what i can tell you

is not going to be the next governor. ray: now the democratic race was decided with colin van o'tern easily winning over marchand and connolly. he pledged to keep new hampshire a no sales tax state, attract higher pays job, and try to extent the commuter rail service. his experience proves he's ready to lead the gran s make in the next two years will determine the economic future for the next decade to come. i know we can move our state forward the new hampshire way. we will leave politics at the door. we'll bring people together to work together with a focus on progress. not on partisanship. ray: the van ostern called for the kick off campaign.

chris christie, is the feature speaker. live in bedford, ray brewer. sean: all right. thanks. the race for the republican nomination in the first congressional district is still too close to call. almost all of the votes are in. an incumbent congress mannar rowly leads rich ashooh. erin: neither candidate is giving up. we are hearing there could be a recount in the race would has not been without controversy. last year federal election for accepting an illegal campaign contribution from his parents. >> i'm sure it was on some people's minds. the realty is that's a resolved issue. people want me to focus on public policy. that's why we've had such a strong showing tonight. >> it is too close to call. i know it's been a long night. i really wanted to come in and thank you, because whatever the

thanking you for the rest of my natural life. erin: in the second congressional district, jim lawrence crewed to a win over jack flanagan. this is lawrence's second run for the seat. he ran again because so many people reached out to him. he will face annie kuster in november. he hopes his core issues like the economy and safety for kids will speak to voters from both parties. sean: jack flanagan too soon to say if he will run again. the three-term state rep says he did everything he could based on the time and resources, and he already offered his support to lawrence. >> in an interview, annie kuster is already looking forward to november. >> i brought people together to get things done. combating the heroin epidemic, working for increasing access to

opportunity by creating a campus for the community colleges, and fighting for seniors to maintain and protect medicare and social security. i'm very confident that the voters will make the right decision in november. erin: as expected, the republican senate race was not close with kelly ayotte holding off jim rubens with 80% of the vote. she will take on maggie hassan in november. some campaigns spent the night wonder wondering, decided early. andy smith breaks down. >> this was a late night for a lot of campaigns and an early morning too. let's talk about the race as we know joined by andy smith. good night for van ostern and kelly ayotte. jim lawrence is the one that pulled it out in the second c.d. as well. >> that was an interesting one to watch. neither of the candidates, lawrence or flanagan, were known to the voters in the district at all.

about jim lawrence quickly as he comes up to speed as the candidate for november. >> it is going to be a different world for him. >> he's in the big leagues now. >> colin van ostern, he was -- we were thinking probably the favorite on the democratic side. he proved to be. >> he did. he certainly showed that getting the support of your party helps. getting that support early to freeze out any thing that might go to your opponents helped him out in the face. >> there wasn't a lot of democratic party either. the party has to like that. >> you know, the democratic party tends to shy away from primaries, because they don't want to have it come up to cause it to make it more difficult to get together. they don't have to worry tomorrow morning at their unity breakfast. >> speaking of not worrying, i don't think kelly ayotte lost a lot of sleep. she was onset. she thanked him for the

kevin: it is wednesday morning, september 14th. clouds moving in. temperatures are much warmer this morning across the state. we're still in the upper 40's to mid 50's in the north country. lower 60's elsewhere with some showers and maybe even a thunderstorm a possibilit a the details on that and the change the front brings for the rest of the week with your forecast coming up. sean: new on "daybreak," a 21-year-old man from alaska is dead after drowning in the connecticut river. erin: emergency crews rushed to the farm just before 6:00 last night and started searching the water for a missing swimmer. his body was found about a half an hour later. police say the victim was a member of the americorp working

association at st. gotten's national park. sean: a man add hitted he robbed a man in hudson in june. daniel quinn pleaded guilty yesterday to armed bank robbery. he threatened employees with a knife and took an employee hostage to make his escape. he faces up to 25 years from prison when he's sentenced in january. erin: a vermont mother is accused of her 8-year-old son in the car. shauna was arrested after they found bottles in her vehicle. sean: how the school is helping students of a closing college. erin: plus getting ready for winter. what local plow drivers spent yesterday

when i first found out that carl had been using heroin diately thought not my son. i found him in his bathroom with a syringe still in his hand and that was the worst day of my life. annie kuster is leading the fight regarding this opioid epidemic. she's trying to do everything she can to get laws changed. so this doesn't happen again. she's definitely a leader. i just love annie.

sean: the state department of transportation is looking at adding new exits. they want to hear from you about the idea. the project is designed to relieve terrific along route 102 through derry and allow for more economic development. a public meeting is set for tuesday, september 27th at 7:00 at the derry municipal center. students at daniel webster college are getting much neededhe parent company, i.t.t. educational services, announced it was closing all of its campuses. snhu has agreed to take on all daniel webster students and programs to help them complete their degrees. snhu will hire as many college graduates as possible. erin: many of us are still trying to hold on to summer. local snowplow drivers

they attended a symposium on winter salt yesterday. it focused on decreasing the amount of salt used to clear snow and ice. the department of environmental services says too much salt is bad for the environment. >> we have a problem in some of our streams here in new hampshire. too much salt is entering them. that's coming from winter salt that we use to clear our streets from snow. erin: our own kevin skarupa was one of the fre kevin: upon telling them how early it is to attempt to make a prediction like that. erin: too early? kevin: not to offend the publication in our state that does that. take that with a grain of salt. sean: see what i did there? kevin: start off with clear skies in central and southern areas. you notice the minute

that will be crossing the state through the afternoon. that means any sort of warning sunshine will give way to clouds. we'll have the chance of scattered showers or a storm. the north country quite a few more clouds without the day. with that, on and off showers. that's going to keep temperatures in the 60's. for central and southern areas, a run into the 70's for lower half of the 80's with enough sunshine through noontime or 1:00 before the clouds invade. eventually this front will mean business. as a matter of fact, he had earlier this week is the possibility with this with maybe even some patchy frost by friday morning. right now in the north country either side of 50. southern areas are in the low to mid 60's. a solid 15-degree difference. we're looking at a solid 20-degree difference for the high temperature into the afternoon. temperatures warmer this morning. over ten degrees warmer than yesterday thanks to a light breeze out of the southwest and the clouds continuing to make their way in.

and much cooler air which will be coming out of central canada eventually. high temperatures today upper 60's up north. it will be in the lower half of the 80 ohs in southern areas. maybe as high as 85 or 86 from manchester to the coastline. our best chance of the shower or storm will be after 3:00 or 4:00 in southern areas. we deal rule it out that one or two may have gusty winds. it will be on and off shower activity. you can see by 1:00, clouds continuing to make their way into state, invading central areas and scattered showers up north. as the front comes through, broken line of showers. we aren't expecting the shower activity in central and southern areas to last anytng more than an hour. there may be a couple of brief downpours, we're not expecting over a half an inch of rain. there could be the chance with the stronger wind gusts. northerly wind continues to kick in behind that. that will drop temperatures in the 40's to lower half of the

southern new hampshire probably not out of the 60's. that will be with full sunshine. that will lead us to the cooler night or thursday night. a lot of areas by friday morning will be down into the 40's and mid and upper 30's. high temperatures today going anywhere from the upper 60's up north to lower half of the 80's in southern areas. as i said, on and off showers up north today. central and southern areas we'll wait for the afternoon for a couple of scattered showers or a thunderstorm. as i mention, friday morning the next air mass comes in. patchy frost possible for parts of the north country and maybe a couple of the sheltered valleys in the upper valley as well. extended forecast shows another warming trend into the weekend. not quite as warm into the latest stretch. we'll be in the 70's. sunshine for saturday. if you are looking for a couple of scattered showers, the best chance of that will be either later saturday evening or into sunday. sunday does not look like a wash out. it does look like temperatures will start edging up again early

ice bucket challenge in massachusetts yesterday. sean: it was a huge show and part of the ceremony to dedicate the newest hall named after pete frates, who inspired the ice bucket challenge. there's the hope that it will inspire and motivate students. they raised a lot of money. erin: i'm sure his family really appreciates that. he was there as well. of the primary elections continues with a look at the winners and the races that are still too close to call this

sean: back of the results of the new hampshire primary. there are two races that are still too close to call. one of them is the republican contest for governor. erin: colin van ostern was declared the winner taking 52% of the vote. in the republican race, chris sununu and frank edelblut are neck in neck. live where the unity breakfast is taking place later this morning. ray: the breakfast will take place here. the republican nominee for governor is expected to speak. we don't know who it is. it is the morning after. they are still waiting

nominee for governor. jeannie forester, ted gastas, and chris sununu were vying. most of the voted counts, they are only separated by 1% of the vote, meaning the race is too close to call. >> it is exiting. we're very optimistic. it wouldn't be a good primary if it wasn't close. >> i can tell you that colin van ostern is not going to be the next governor. ray: in the democratic race, three candidates for competing, van ostern, connolly, and marchand. van ostern won with more than half of the votes. he says his experience proves he's ready to take on the role of governor. >> i'm honored to be

sean: kelly ayotte will be fighting for her senate seat. she will face off against challenger, maggie hassan, in november. ayotte easily defeated jim rubens in the new hampshire primary. she won 79% of the vote. senator ayotte is looking ahead to the general election matchup with maggie hassan. >> i'm just to keep rowing the boat to get things done for new hampshire. getting the making sure the funding comes for prevention, treatment, recovery, and the first responders in new hampshire. that's where my focus is. that's why i think it should be. erin: maggie hassan is also gear up for the general election. the democrat candidate spoke to her supporters at an event last night. >> i'm going to be working to make sure the people understand the choice in the election between a senate who will always approach

>> two months to go. back to you. sean: thanks. new on "daybreak," a deadly crash in ossipee is under investigation. the accident happened shortly after 4:00 yesterday in the area of deer cap campground. state police say a pickup truck was heading north when it crossed the center line and slammed head on into a car. the truck rolled over. the driver of the car, 61-year-old janet bauman, wasro her passenger, 67-year-old gary bauman, was flown to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. erin: firefighters in manchester are trying to figure out what sparked a fire. the flames broke out just after 9:00 last night at the residents at manchester place. close to 500 people were evacuated from the 200 unit apartment building at a deck caught fire. when crews arrived, they say that thick, black smoke was coming from the top floor.

they didn't know the building was on fire. people were in danger for a period of time. erin: officials say because the fire was outside the fire alarms hadn't gone off yet. lavally farms is asking for your help. a large amount of produce was stolen from their field sometime on monday. they say the thief made off with corn, chard, cucumbers, and tomatoes. due to the quality of vegetables stolen, a vehicle was needed to carry them off. sean: people in the town of hancock were shaken after hearing loud noises. fighter jets dropped flares that exploded in the air. they first said their jets were not involved, but later claimed

i was working. i heard a noise. what was that? i looked up and saw the jet. >> we hear the aircraft coming over. nothing that circles around. you see something that is out of the ordinary that concerns people. sean: the air national guard said it was doing train and dropped the flairs. typically it notifies the public before flying over new hampshire. however that did not haen erin: turning to sports this morning, the red sox played against the orioles at fenway park. baltimore took an early lead, scoring five runs off of drew. it started when hardy hit a three run homer in the second. then in the fifth, xander bogaerts hit a homer.

win the game 6-3. isn't. sean: the new hampshire patriots players will be sporting new jerseys. they will wear them as they take on the texans next week. the jerseys are now on sale at the pro-shop. a portion of the sales will go toward youth teams affected by the louisiana floods. erin: new hampshire tackles hunger is back for its fourth year. high school football teams will be collecting community pantries over the next month. the first up is merrimack valley. donations will be taken friday night during the game against kenith. we want to wish good luck to manchester memorial graduate, carl melzer. he's a super star in ultra running. he's trying to set the speed record for running the 2,200 appalachian

through friday and a good portion of saturday before the next quick-moving front gets in here. you'll notice a couple of showers and a few rumbles of thunder through new york this morning. the front has energy with it. it just doesn't have a lot of humidity to kind of contend with as it bumps into this. there should be enough warmth and enough sunshine as we go through the morning and destabilize the atmosphere somewhat into the afternoon. the front itself still back out through the great lakes will be crossing later this afternoon and into of course the last two mornings we've been anywhere from the upper 30's to lower 50's. we're a solid ten degrees warmer than that. mid 50's in the monadnock region. low to mid 50's depending on where you are and lower 60's on the big lake itself and up north. the clouds have been moving in. here in the upper 40's to lower 50's. it is about ten degrees warmer than the last couple of mornings. high temperatures today huge difference from 66 in pittsburgh with

clouds and the chance of a passing thundershower in southern areas. highs today in the mid 80's. a 20-degree difference from north to south through the afternoon. notice a couple of showers for the northern half of the state through 1:00. better chance for central and southern areas will be during the afternoon and early evening as the front moves by, a wind will start to pick up out of the northwest. that will start feeding in the cooler air. light northerly breeze out there tomorrow. with full sunshine again. we're talking mid 60's to lower 70's. the full sunshine in quite a while. that will set up the coolest evening in a while. temperatures likely drop into the 30's out west and up north. low to mid 30's to start the day. that will be the beginning of a warming trend which will lead us into the weekend ahead of the next front which is just making its way into the pacific northwest right now. high temperatures today getting back into the low to mid 80's in southern areas. it will be morning sunshine to afternoon clouds and a passing shower or storm for southern areas.
