cherise: right now at 6:00, a brush fire burning in hooksett. the problems drought conditions are creating for firefighters. hayley: we got a little rain today, but there is more to come. when this next batch of rain arrives and how it could affect the morning commute. cherise: this week dedicated to fighting opioid addiction nationwide. the new overdo signs of improvement in new hampshire. the home opener for the patriots, and jimmy garopollo suffers a shoulder injury. news 9 is a gillette stadium. we will check in on the tailgating action coming up. >> now, wmur news 9 at 6:00. cherise: right now, crews are battling a brush fire on the manchester-hooksett line.

towns have now stepped in to help. good evening. i'm cherise leclerc. the dry conditions are causing several problems for firefighters. wmur's kristen carosa explains. kristen: emergency crews have stationed the vehicles in the street, and roughly two acres have burned so far half a mile from here and fires are burning deep did you draft conditions. -- due emergency vehicles from several surrounding towns have flooded this neighborhood on the manchester-hooksett line. >> they know what they're are doing and have it under control. kristen: catherine raddatz lives near where the fire is burning which was spotted by a hunter saturday afternoon fire officials do say people living in the area are safe. >> we have multiple companies there working the fire. kristen: fire officials believe the fire has been burning for several days and could have been caused by an unpermitted camp fire or a lightening strike. that is still under investigation.

conditions are making fighting this fire much worse. >> extremely labor-intensive to go through and physically take out the areas with foam and continue to go back and do the same thing over and over again. kristen: firefighters have set up portable pumps and are using water from beaver pond but this set up came with some challenges. >> we are still having some issues with the volume level of the pond. kristen: and that is becau affecting the way this fire is burning we are told its burning well into the trees root systems. >> once the trees are severed by the fire, the trees could fall at any time and that is a serious potential hazard, safety concern for us having firefighters working on the line. kristen: and with the concern comes a reminder about how dangerous the drought conditions are right now. >> we would ask people to be the extremely careful with fire

have gotten to a point where it is very difficult just to deal with some of the fires. kristen: fire officials say crews will be on the scene for the rest of the day today into tomorrow. again, no one in this area is at risk. cherise: some scattered showers moved across the state today, but not enough to improve how dry it is. a live look in meredith where skies are grey this evening. meteorologist hayley lapoint shows us how much rain we need hayley: we need way more than what we see -- received this morning. we will get a little more over the next couple of days. look at the totals, measly numbers and you can understand why even though it is what this morning, there are still brushfires. 0.12 inches, only .0 .01 inches in salem. manchester, 0.003 inches.

i know people on facebook would ask me, did the rain help with the drought? not really. we need 16.85 inches of rainfall compared to 0.3 inches we got today, barely anything. on the radar right now, clouds and you can see the showers in pennsylvania moving our way so we will get some much-needed rain movies may a little heavier. i will show you the full timing of the showers coming through ahead. cherise: haley, thank yo trying to determine who is responsible for an explosion in new york city. the fbi is evaluating a tumblr post claiming responsibility for the bombing. authorities say one device was inside a toolbox at a construction site, and a device found blocks away appeared to be a pressure cooker with wiring and a cell phone. the good news, tonight, all 29 victims are out of the hospital. >> we will not allow these type of people and these type of threats to disrupt our life in

that's what they want to do. we're not going to let them do it. cherise: and the governor is also deploying an additional 1000 state troopers and national guard members throughout new york city. the discovery of a possible meth lab at a lebanon housing complex forced police to evacuate a unit there. police responded to renihan meadows early this morning for a welfare check acting on a tip , that a man and woman may be engaged in drug activity. once officers got there the but they managed to find one man in a nearby hallway. police had to evacuate one unit , and they are still investigating the possible meth lab. today marks the beginning of prescription opioid and heroin epidemic awareness week. president obama made the proclamation in hopes of bringing attention to the drug crisis. wmur's mike cronin joins us live with what this could mean for new hampshire. mike: american medical response

forefront and should help make it a key issue among candidates running for office in november. this week comes at a time with encouraging news from amr in manchester. there has been a significant decrease in overdoses this august and september compared to those months last year. so far this month, amr has responded to 33 overdoses and four deaths. last september, there were 91 overdoses. christopher stawasz of amr says the safe station program is a big part of the success, in addition to the many on the front lines. >> by no means is this fight over, or even anywhere near under control. we are still in a very critical situation where people are literally dying every other day. while it's good news now, we don't want to let up on the pedal because there's a lot of work left to do. mike: stawasz is also going to

its first meeting on tuesday. that committee will look at whether or not narcan use should be expanded in new hampshire. cherise: thank you, mike. the home opener for the new england patriots today, and jimmy garoppolo is out of the game because of a shoulder injury. fans still hopeful about the future for the pats. wmur's naoko funayama is at gillette stadium with how many are celebrating the start of football season. naoko: key curiosity more than anything else, how would you do replacing tom brady the first four games, but the home opener was about the football tradition and of course, the food. it's that time of year when the stadium parking lots are overflowing with homemade delights and perfectly marinated meats to grill. sunday afternoons, and especially the home opener, are tradition for many here at gillette stadium, but they come

cherise: the concord police department is stuffing their cruisers full of food to help the new hampshire food bank. the stuff a cruiser event took place outside the market basket on fort eddy road today. volunteers collected non-perishable food items and monetary donations for people in need. >> people have been so generous today. i mean, people you do not think could afford to givar we have taken it today. it is really a testament to the folks here in town. >> there are one out of nine people that are food insecure. one out of five our children. there is a need in a continues to grow, so anything that anyone can do to help us out is greatly appreciated. cherise: another stuff a cruiser event will be held at shaws supermarket from noon to 5:00, then on sunday at hannafords

>> now, your storm watch 9 forecast. hayley: did was kind of a good day to stay in and watch football with mostly cloudy skies, the occasional shower. a look at that on the conway camera with some sun and blue sky. inundated the area. it will remain mostly cloudy through the evening hours with the exception of up north. you can see the clouds thinning out a little bit there. rain showers, they have been few and far between this afternoon with a long chunk of time where we are drying out the double -- but that will end during the overnight hours.

and that will mean some heavier downpours for us during the overnight hours and right in time for the morning commute on monday. huber the high temperatures. once we tried out a little bit, the temperatures moved up quickly. 77, concord. 77, portsmouth. 74, plymouth. the average high, 72. we were well above that. we continue to be. 77, manchester. over 70's, plymouth. this hour, over 70's. you might have noticed the humidity. stepping outside and it is like stepping into the tropics like miami. look at the dew points. you can see them in the upper 60's, even 70's. the number we have dew points like that, that is when we get into the sticky, uncomfortable air mass, borderline oppressive in some spots when you get close to 70.

the overnight and much of the day tomorrow. here is how things go. timing of the showers. 2:00 in the morning, the batch of heavier rain coming in. you may get broken up by the sound of the downpours. there could even be a few rumbles of thunder continuing to move through, especially in southern new hampshire 7:00 tomorrow morning and continuing to move off toward the east. the afternoon will be similar today with clouds and a few spotty showers but dry time in their start to go down. we really need substantial rain. we will not get it from this storm system but in southern areas we may come away with one inch of rain fall with some of the heavier downpours. here is what is left of tropical depression julia basically doing nothing, falling apart. we do have another storm system to talk about a out in the middle of the atlantic ocean. this is tropical storm karl and

career. can you believe that? 21-0, patriots. but then this, late second quarter, jimmy garoppolo is driven hard into the ground on that right shoulder. he was 18-27 for 234 yards and three touchdowns, but was forced to leave the game and did not return. no word on the severity of the injury, although there are reports that x-rays were negative, but it's very unlikely that he will be able to play on thursday night. so bring on the rookie, jacoby brissett. his first career nfl pass is a 37 yards to bennett, who takes down to the 30 yard line. that would set up this lagarrette blount nine yard touchdown. the dolphins actually outscored the pats 24-7 after the garoppolo injury, but blount ran for 123 yards. brissett was 6-9 for 92 yards. patriots hold on to win it 31-24. quick turnaround, they play the texans on thursday. >> he has been working for this for a long time.

during training camp. he did a good job. pressure situation. jason: all right. chip kelly and his 49ers on the road in carolina. second quarter, cam newton hits a wide open greg olsen in stride, 78 yard touchdown. panthers go on to win it 46-27. both teams are 1-1. what a win for the dartmouth football team last night, making a serious statement against nationally ranked new hampshire. the big green rallied with two fourth quarter touchwn including the game-winner with about one minute 30 seconds to play. junior quarterback jack heneghan, making his first career start, drove the big green 80 yards in less than two minutes, capping the drive with a one yard touchdown toss to junior charles mack. heneghan heneghan threw three touchdown passes on the night. it was dartmouth's first win over unh in 40 years, and their first win over a ranked opponent since 2013. the big green will play at holy cross next weekend.
