? josh: this sunday on "closeup," one presidential debate in the books, but some voters are left feeling flat. >> i wish there was a better choice than either of the two. josh: by the libertarian ticket, gary johnson and bill weld. and what is it like to go from revolution rock star to high-profile surrogate? and donald trump responds to the accusations he violated the embargo with cuba. and josh mcelveen. if you measure by the resume, they are as qualified as
10:01 am
experience as governors of their respective states. and they have gotten attention from voters unsatisfied with the major party candidates. governor gary johnson of new mexico and governor bill weld of massachusetts. we have to start by asking this. how did this merger happen? mr. johnson: bill weld was always an inspiration to me. he was my role model. beyond my this guy is my running mate. josh: how do this come to be? mr. weld: the first image i saw of gary johnson, it was an ad in his run for governor. he slaloms down and skis and lands in a pale of water. gary and i had a great time together as governors. i have always been a big fan.
10:02 am
together with a short one. all the required was for him to ask. josh: and clearly there is an appetite for something other than donald trump and hillary clinton. what kind of campaign are you running? would you call a traditional? mr. johnson: positive, certainly. we are at 10% plus in the polls. i think that speaks volumes as to the amount of money we are spending, the attention we are getting. governors. when we say we are fiscally conservative, there is a track record to you when we say we are socially inclusive, there is a track record. when we say we are skeptical of military interventions, we will back that up with the fact that we were not wallflowers in our respective states. and when we talk about free trade, really that is about more
10:03 am
presidential nominees will debate. we argue have the first debate between clinton and trump. how frustrating is it that you are not on the stage making a case? mr. weld: i would love being up on stage, but i am not frustrated. we are continuing to take our story around. we think we have winning arguments. as gary sometime says, there is a four lane highway between the two parties. the democrat party, no one responsible these days. and the republican party is even more mean-spirited than before their convention in cleveland. the donald is trying to pick group against group. that is not the kind of happy warrior and freedom and liberty view we have of the future. josh: in 2012, a lot of people know you from your candidacy then. how have things changed? looking back at it from 100
10:04 am
changed. and of momentum in 2012 got me to 1.3 million votes. a lot of people did not view that as momentum. i was kind of disappointed in the results, but i was told omentum is momentum. here it is. now at 10% of the vote. representing 15 million voters now. a lot of attention is being given. josh: you talk about overregulation. you talked about it a lot back you talked about it a lot back in 2 attention because it is controversial. using there are too many laws when it comes to the drug trade in the use of drugs. in new hampshire, we have an open your problem. a crisis most people call it. where do we go wrong? mr. johnson: first that we recognize it as a health issue rather than a criminal justice issue. there are different approaches that would reduce those things we care about -- death, disease,
10:05 am
state issue, similar to alcohol. i think we will legalize marijuana in this country. as president of the united states, i am promising to be schedule -- de-schedule marijuana as a class one narcotic. that would help resolve the banking issues in the states that have legalized it. mr. weld: hampshire and massachusetts, and governor charlie baker, my successor, is dealing with it, is pills. that is opioid crisis. that is caused by doctors overprescribing. the governor and the attorney general have convene a meeting including doctors. they said we will not say you have the sniffles, here is a 60 day supply of oxycontin.
10:06 am
i think both governments are doing a good job focusing on that. but that is not a marijuana issue, that is a legal drug issue. josh: a lot of people feel one leads to the other. but that is something to be debated later. as far as your ticket, a lot of people say this is a firewall against donald trump. others say against hillary clinton. how are you dealing with that moniker of a protest campaign? mr. johnson: you believe in is how you change things. i really do believe we are representing most americans. we have tied hillary clinton for the lead among millennials, the largest demographic in the country. we have risen to this level. i think that will continue. come election day, i think we will lead among young people, because we are talking about reform to programs like medicaid
10:07 am
they will not be around for young people. we are leading among independents, the largest political affiliation now. when people talk about you have to vote for one of the 2 -- no. you vote for the person you believe in. mr. weld: what israeli going on is the establishment parties in washington are trying to -- what is really going on establishment parties in washington are trying to brainwash as because they tried to keep the monopoly in washington. they have done a bad job of exercising that power the last 15 years. he seemed to have two parties that exist for the purpose of killing each other. sometimes it seems like you have two establishment party campaigns that exist for the purpose of killing each other. as my wife says, this is the year voters have to think for
10:08 am
does anybody think the polarity in congress that exists now in this country is going to get any better if clinton or trump gets in congress? no one believes that. so how about a lack of a a couple of former republican governors that served in heavily immigrant states, got reelected, fiscally conservative, socially inclusive. that is a that when i think we hire a bipartisan, tripartisan administration and tell both sides to come together, that third scenario actually has a chance of succeeding. mr. weld: and we both had democratic legislatures to deal with. by definition, we had to work across the aisle and we did get in stone. no one can deny we were
10:09 am
moved our states into a fiscally responsible direction. that would be a handy thing in washington, d.c. now. josh: you both had successful elections. but on the national stage, you know the importance of debates. most people know money shoveling then from obama. mr. johnson: i have the feeling this interview now will push me over 15%. so thank you. we have to keep plugging away. mr. weld: we think we have the best ticket. we have a quantitative program.
10:10 am
do what we are doing, this last 40 days is when people really focus on the election. inevitably, the secret will seat out that there is a good, well qualified third option. when that does, i would not be surprised to see our name recognition go to 50%. if it does, then gary johnson will be at 25% of the polls, because he does not have the unfavorables at 25%, we will be dangerous, because we have momentum. between money and momentum, i would take momentum every time in the last 30 days before the election. mr. johnson: another element is trust. if you tell the truth, you do not have to remember anything. i think the one unforgivable in life is hypocrisy. saying one thing and doing another. neither bill weld more myself are hypocrites.
10:11 am
when you tell the truth, first thing is you acknowledge mistakes. and we all make mistakes. but if you are transparent, acknowledge mistakes, tell the truth, is that not what you really want in leadership? josh: this really is more or less a partnership rather than a top of the ticket. mr. weld: we chose to run together. mr. johnson: 2 for the pricef candidates. we are the only ticket that is not isolationist. we believe in maintaining and demonstrating military supremacy in naval and air power, having people see that around the world. we believe in constructive engagement, cultural soft power. we have the full range of ticket in international diplomacy pay
10:12 am
for regime change if we see that other country doing something we do not like. i think the american people agree with us and gary johnson on that. josh: one thing i have gone to know about you over the years is you're not restrained about speaking your mind. that is for sure. and if there's any cycle to do that, it is this one. mr. johnson: and balancing the federal budget. less government spending. that is for young people. lee betty. donald trump talk -- and personal liberty. donald trump talks about stop and frisk. what happened to the constitution? we are promising and invincible national defense, but when we involve ourselves in regime change, it does not work. we get out of afghanistan tomorrow. let's stop putting our troops in
10:13 am
putting civilians in a crossfire that we put our military in this horrible situation, where they are just following orders to a tee. and they're all proud of that. and no compromise when it comes to the fact that we do have the strongest military. josh: in a lot of people hope you have a voice and can get out in the election. thanks for joining us. we will be right back with a candid discussion with one bernie sanders. chris sununu's family gave him a famous name and the top job at the family resort. but then things went, well, downhill. over the years, chris cut jobs. chris cut workers' hours to deny them health insurance. and now he opposes the minimum wage.

josh: welcome back. this could not have been easy. he came from nowhere to spark a revolution no one saw coming and nearly pulled off the greatest upset in modern political history. now bernie sanders hillary clinton. we sat down with him. good to see you. how goes the revolution? sen. sanders: it goes well. what we are all over this country is more people involved in the political process. seeing people running for school board, state legislature. that is exactly what this country needs. weaning millions to demand we have a government that
10:16 am
the 1%. the only way to bring that about is when people get involved. josh: how has life changed since the convention and a couple weeks of war -- before the convention? sen. sanders: it is different, not crossing the country. i am beginning to readjust her being a united states senator from vermont and getting involved in important issues. josh: you had a lot of loyal support in this new hampshire. let me take this moment to thank the people of new hampshire. we had so many volunteers and did so well here. i appreciate the kind of support we got. josh: but there are a lot of people really disappointed and upset. the convention, when you decided to handed off to hillary clinton. obviously, the numbers were what they were.
10:17 am
sen. sanders: i think that is a mistake. for my own perspective, this is a nation and world in the midst of very serious crises. what we have got to do is take a hard look at the two candidates, one of which will likely become resident, either donald trump or hillary clinton. i think it would be a catastrophe for our country in the world if trump were elected just take a look at the issues clinton and trump are running on. clinton believes we should raise the minimum wage to a living wage. trump does not. clinton believes climate change is real and we have to transform our energy system. trump does not. trump wants to give huge tax breaks to millionaires.

taxes on the very rich. even if you do not like her, the stakes are so high that it is imperative that we defeat trump and elect hillary clinton. i intend to do everything i can to make that happen. josh: one of the items you talked about -- improving infrastructure. where does the money come from? sen. sanders: increase in the number of billionaires in the country. tenfold. we went from 51 to 540 billionaires. yet, you have people like warren buffett, one of the richest people in this country, that he pays an effective tax rate that is higher than his secretary. we have a tax system in which donald trump, among others, have exploited. he is proud he is not paid taxes, despite the fact he is a

people in largest corporations you have to start paying your fair share of taxes so we can make public colleges and universities tuition free for the middle class. josh: on the debate, did you learn anything you may not have known about donald trump or hillary clinton? sen. sanders: i was glad to see clinton start right out in attacking trump's view of trickle-down emi billionaires and large corporations does not create jobs. does not trickle down to the working class. it makes the very rich and largest corporations even richer. clinton is right, trump is not . when trump gets up there and proudly says he is a billionaire and does not pay taxes, that is

share so we can rebuild our infrastructure, so we make public colleges and universities tuition for you. so we deal with having the highest rate of poverty -- josh: how does hillary clinton deal with the issue of trustworthiness. she was cold as the sen. sanders: what she has to say is say as straightforwardly as she can, "when i am elected president, within the first 100 days, this is what is going to happen -- we will invest $1 trillion to create these in jobs, we will raise the minimum wage to a living wage, we will
10:21 am
i think she has to come forward and be as clear as she can in outlying -- outlining an agenda that works for the middle class and tells the billionaire class and wall street they cannot have it all. josh: does she have healing to do when it comes to winning trust back? sen. sanders: she will have to deal with that. what i think the best way to do what is just to make it clear- with the candidate a what that candidate has got to do is deliver for the middle-class and working class. that is what we need now. i think she has to be as clear as she can be -- a, b, c, d, this is what i am doing for your family. you cannot afford childcare, we will address that. you are tired of going over potholes, we will fix the infrastructure.
10:22 am
she has to be as clear as she can, put it in writing, and at the end of 100 days, that is what we have to accomplish. josh: when you announced your behind hillary clinton and would do whatever you could to get her elected -- the decision itself, was it tough to make? sen. sanders: obviously i and hundreds of thousands of my supporters worked hard in trying to get a nomination for bernie sanders. it was not a disappointment. we came much further. you were one of the first people i talk to on the campaign. when we began, it is fair to say you and other media people did not think we had the chance to do as well as we did. josh: did you think you had a chance? sen. sanders: i was not sure we could, but i do think we had a

it was a disappointment because we got so far and did not get the gold ring. but right now, clinton or trump will be president. but i think trump will be a disaster. i will do everything i can to make sure he is defeated. josh: what does november 9 and the days beyond hold for senator bernie sanders? sen. sanders: what i have said many times as politics does not and election day. this is an appointment -- this is an if clinton wins, you cannot say that. we have to rally millions to stand up and make the difficult fight to demand we have a government that represents all of us and not the 1%. and electing hillary clinton is a step in that direction but by no means the final passage. we have to rally the american people to stand up to wall street, to the drug companies, to the very powerful people in
