>> by now, just about everyone in town has seen that video. they told us tonight they were shocked that a high-speed chase would happen on their quiet -- quite streets, but they are also praising the actions of the officers. a dramatic in to a high-speed chase. people who live in town describe it as normally quiet, but after seeing police dash cam video of this white car whipping down winding streets, swerving into the wrong lane, and flying through red lights and intersections -- >> am really shocked. pelham is a quiet town usually. >> it all started on route 38 early wednesday morning the car sped by an officer on patrol, a chase ensues. >> the subject driving the car was definitely accelerating and driving in a dangerous speed. >> the officer loses sight of the car on mammouth road near windham, lights and siren still on. it doesn't take long to catch up

amazingly the driver crawls out. 22-year-old justin soeum from hudson. but the tension isn't over. >> you never know what is going on inside that vehicle. is someone in toxic eight it? -- intoxicated? >> minutes later, the arrest happens. soeum is charged with aggravated and reckless operation. many people in town, like jamie nee, who was out driving to work at the time of the chase, say they feel lucky the outcome wasn't different. >> i was up going to work at that time of the morning, which is crazy. >> that person is definitely lucky they didn't die. >> soeum is out on bail but will be back in court for arraignment october 7. live in pelham cherise leclerc wmur news9.

from the category three storm. more than a million people are being warned to get out while -- before matthew moves in. >> tonight, people are evacuating while they still can. how does it feel leaving your house like this? >> it's i get back here. >> a heart wrenching decision to leave. >> we are on a barrier island. my husband is on oxygen and you don't get any help. >> the florida governor urging people to evacuate. >> everyone in our state must prepare to evacuate. >> tomorrow they are closing the

line for propane bill with people braving the storm, hoping for the best. >> my family is from the coast of mississippi. we lost our house in katrina so we are kind of thinking this will be as bad. >> supplies like bread and propane running low as or did windows made for empty streets. >> it's like a ghost town. it means that everybody is really taking it seriously. should. >> but she is staying behind to help elderly neighbors who cannot leave on their own. for now, it is a call night on the shore, but things will look very different in 24 hours. nearly 100 shelters have opened up across the state, ready to take in those evacuees. shelley: the calm before the storm there in florida.

matthew. mike: what has been consistent has been the track eventually through the bahamas, eventually approaching eastern parts of florida. the on that the track has been doing all sorts of crazy things. 150 miles per hour, right over the central part of the bahamas. notice moving to the northwest, 10 miles per hour. hugged the coast or stay within a few miles offshore. by friday, right around jacksonville florida, then it begins to drive to the northeast and eventually to the east and possibly the southeast. that means no impact whatsoever here in new england or new hampshire. we are tracking higher temperatures, will look at that

deaths are being blamed on hurricane matthew in haiti. clean up is under way now after the storm left roadway flooded and destroyed homes. officials are having issues communicating with the hardest-hit areas. right now at least 10,000 people are in shelters tonight. a total of 16 people have died so far. and you can follow hurricane matthew by heading over our website wmur.com. there you can also find information on how to help the areas hit hardest by this storm. rochester police want your help identifying a bank robbery suspect. police say this man robbed the citizen's bank inside the hannafords on milton road today. police say the man passed a note to the teller and threatened that he had a weapon. the suspect left through the front doors with an undisclosed amount of money. anyone with information should call police. an accused drug dealer is behind bars tonight. dunbarton police arrested 36-year-old derek winters of manchester last night.

process of making meth at the purgatory pond boat launch when he was arrested. winters is charged with a number of charges including manufacturing methamphetamine. police say additional charges will likely be filed. now on to commitment 2016, tonight, the candidates for governor squared off in a debate at new england college in henniker. republican chris sununu and democrat colin van ostern covered topics that impact the state from the economy to health care and the presidential election. wmur's jean mackin joins us live with some of the highlights. jean: with governor maggie hassan running for u.s. senate it is an open seat in some ways tonight was like a job interview with reviewing resumes a recurring theme. right out of the gate, the two executive councilors, republican chris sununu and democrat colin van ostern, were asked if they think their challenger has the

>> is he a good businessman, do you think? >> as far as i know he's had one private sector job for 3 years so i don't know if that qualifies him as a businessman >> is councilor sununu a good businessman? >> unfortunately for waterville valley no. jean: they disagreed on handling mental health background checks for gun buyers, minimum wage, and funding planned parenthood >> this isn't about politics, it's about people's lives someone will always be attacking planned pareho governor who was stanidng tup to women's health 100% of the time >> i've made the tough votes if anybody has thrown politics aside. jean: they focused on education funding and if the formula should be decided by the courts or legislature. >> i'm amazed that chris walked just say that he wont cut school funding in nh pass the buck >> it's not about cutting

shelley: the number of people being killed in traffic deaths is on the rise. new numbers just released show traffic fatalities have climbed 10%. this follows last year's 7% increase when there was 35,000 deaths. the data was released at an event where government agencies are aiming to eliminate traffic deaths and injuries in the u.s. within the next 30 years. former new england patriots star aaron hernandez was back in court today for a status hearing in his double murder case.

two witnesses in the car saying they varied and are unreliable. hernandez is accused of gunning down two men in the south end back in 2012. he's already serving a life term for the murder of odin lloyd in 2013. the trailer for the movie about the 5 days following the boston marathon bombings is out. patriots day is based on the from former boston police commissioner ed davis. the film stars massachusetts native mark wahlberg, the movie opens in december. the 68-year-old sandown man is back in new hampshire after he wrote to raise money for veterans. with support from his community, he raised more than $20,000 for

suzanne roantree has his story. suzanne: 68-year-old gerry lachance an avid biker, firefighter and veteran says he came up with the idea of biking the 2700 miles while taking part in a ride 2 recovery event in nashua earlier this year. and so with the blessing of his wife and doctor lachance asked fellow sandown firefighter john goldman to help him plan his trip. goldman convinced lachance that instead of camping on the roadside each night they would ask fire departments along the route to give him a place to sleep and so on september 3 on a drizzly day up north in pittsburg, lachance started on the 28 day journey. >> every night he would give me my instructions for the next day. >> lachance biked anywhere from 75 to 100 miles each day and each evening was greeted by a new fire department. >> it was unbelievable how open they were and welcoming. >> as he made his way into north

r and r he hit the road again >> in summerville, south carolina, i went to the fire station. it was rush hour, and they said, you can't go out there by yourself. one gentleman in the fire truck went behind me down the road. cars coming this way, pulling over, getting out of the way for the truck. two or three ladies open the window and said get out of the way, there is the truck going through here. suzanne: when he entered there served the 68-year-old something he never had before. >> when they introduced me to cuban coffee, i loved them. suzanne: but lachance admits he's not as young as he used to be. the early morning heat in florida almost had him give up, but he got on his bike and reached key west on september 30. >> i said how did you do that. he said i just kept thinking of all the soldiers over in iraq with all their gear on and i

tomorrow, friday and saturday well above average temperatures, and then this happens, a big cool down. we have a chance of a couple of showers as the cold front approaches and that will trigger the showers but more importantly it will act as a steering mechanism and the kicker for hurricane matthew to boot well out to see celtic of new hampshire. that's why it will not come in to the granite state. sunny s sun and cloud combo with it slight chance of a late to shower to kickoff the weekend on saturday. early morning fog gives way, even a little warmer in some parts of southern new hampshire could hit around 80 degrees by about 3:00 in the afternoon. notice where temperatures go tomorrow, low to mid 70's in many spots, cooler at the coast and warmer as we go into the day

powerful category storm. when sustained at up to 140 miles per hour. a good part of eastern haiti saw tropical storm force winds but torrential flooding rains. now it is a category three storm over the central bahamas. nest in line is the east coast of florida. will it make savannah, georgia? eventually as the front moves in over the northern tier, it will help drive the hurricane to the east and potentially to the southeast as it weakens to a tropical storm, likely early next week. a beautiful stretch your tomorrow writing to friday. clearing early sunday, breezy and cougar.

shelley: law enforcement officers from across new hampshire were honored today. it was all part of mcdonald's statewide fundraiser to raise money for the state association of police chiefs. in manchester, mayor ted gatsas was on hand as five officers were recognized for going above and beyond in the line of duty as well as being highly invested in the community. >> there is no question that it is important to recognize them. mcdonalds is doing a great thing today that anybody that participates buying a meal in 57 in the state of new hampshire that a portion of that chiefs of police association to help them do different things in the community. shelley: the lifetime achievement award was given to gilford k-9 agbar who served with the department for 8 years before his death in march. thanks for joining us for news9 tonight at 11:00.
