coast tonight. shelley: we hear from one new hampshire native braving the storm in florida. tom: donald trump back in the granite state. why he says tonight was in practice for sunday's debate. hurricane matthew. right now the outer bands of the major storm are slamming the east coast of florida. at this hour, the violent storm with winds up to 130 miles per hour is just hours florida. good evening. i'm shelley walcott. tom: and i'm tom griffith. nearly three million under evacuation orders, it could be the largest evacuation in u.s. history.

skyrocketing as the floodwaters recede. in the bahamas, the shore battered by damaging waves. the rain and wind ripping through the vegetation and the vacations of 3,000 tourists unable to escape and with the hurricane then heading for florida residents thursday filling up those final sandbags stores are boarded up their shelves, bare, and a fight to get fuel >> i saw two guys fighting at the gas station yester lauren: million people ordered 1.5 to evacuate? jamming the roads, but not flying, time lapsed radar showing the normally busy florida skies?clearing out nearly 4,000 flights are cancelled over the next two days. a big concern here now, the storm surge, along the coast of florida where i am it's expected to be 6 to 10 feet or more meaning that waterway behind me , could rise and for residents here flooding is a major fear.

florida, lauren lyster, abc news, back to you. tom: thanks very much. the national hurricane center just released it's latest report on matthew. chief meteorologist mike haddad is here with the newest track mike: we are watching the storm moving to the northwest, just hugging the coast line the entire night. that means the hour -- the outer bands and the eyewall, the worst part of the hurricane, will hit the coast line. but will landfall? it just barely has a coastline and could potentially staff sure. notice the bright yellows and reds around the center of circulation. they will come ashore in and around titusville and cape canaveral and daytona beach. here is the track through early tomorrow evening, a strong major category 3 storm.

the south carolina coast line as it begins to weaken a little bit saturday night. notice what happens to the track after that as it weakens to a tropical storm. it could cycle all the way back to the northern bahamas and southern florida during the middle part of next week from tuesday on. what about our weather cross new hampshire for the holiday weekend. that is straight ahead. shelley: a young woman from new hampshire is among the tens of thousands of people hunkering down for the night in the city ride out the storm. in a phone interview tonight, she described the fear and preparation for matthew in florida night. as hurricane matthew closes in on florida new hampshire native , kathryn krauss is hunkered down in ft. lauderdale. in a phone interview tonight, she described to me what it was looking like outside. >> the storm is moving into where we are right now. it's definitely very windy, and gray outside. it's raining sideways.

pursuing a license to work as a chef on private yahts. the gilford native only knows one person in florida right now her brother, who is two hours north in west palm beach. but that's a location where the hurricane is expected to hit a lot harder. so krauss decided to stay put. >> honestly, i don't have anywhere else to go right now. i'm staying at a crew house and i don't know a lot of people in the area. shelley: like many other people in florida, krauss tried to prepare for the storm but supplies started to dwindle days ago. >> when i went to the grocery store the other day everywhere was out of bread, out of water. they brought another big shipment this morning, but then all the big stores closed down around noon today. it was chaos. shelley: what about the gas stations? >> completely empty. all the gas is gone. shelley: and as krauss prepares to ride out the storm, she tells me she's looking forward to finishing her work in florida and moving out of the hurricane

this, but yes, definitely looking forward to heading back to the north for a little bit. shelley: tonight, the red cross of new hampshire and vermont is deploying workers to the southeast, to provide aid and assistance to people in the path of the storm. and you can find complete coverage of hurricane matthew on our website wmur.com. there you can watch live coverage from our sister stations in florida and follow the latest track. tom: new tonight, state police say a massachusetts man nearly hit a trooper directing traffic. the trooper tried to stop a vehicle around 3:45 this afternoon at the southbound exit 1 on-ramp to the everett turnpike in nashua. the driver didn't stop and the vehicle brushed against the trooper. the trooper was able to get into his cruiser and stop the driver. 57-year-old john hunt of chelmsford was cited for negligent operation and disobeying an officer. right now, crews are mopping up after a house caught fire in new

it started around 7:15 in a single-story log home on berry road. one witness tells wmur large flames were showing when crews arrived. no injuries are reported. shelley: to commitment 2016 now, republican presidential nominee donald trump is back in the granite state for an invite-only event. wmur's cherise leclerc is live at the sandown town hall with how this event was unlike most of his rallies. cherise: ' used to seeing larger settings, bigger crowds, but tonight it was an intimate town gathering as trump fielded audience questions. donald trump back in the granite for the 2nd time in 8 days, as the next presidential debate looms this weekend. many political experts saying the intimate town hall style atmosphere was prep for the st. louis debate sunday. but trump says, that's not the case.

weekend's debate was also brought to the forefront. one voter asking whether trump held back on hillary clinton in the first debate and whether this sunday would feature a different tone. >> i'd much rather have a be on policy. i didn't like you getting into the gutter. cherise: the next debate will be held on sunday at washington university in st. louis. this was trump's 6th visit to new hampshire since winning the primary. sunday's debate will be at washington university in st. louis. live in sandown cherise leclerc wmur news9. tom: meanwhile, democratic nominee hillary clinton spent the day speaking at fundraisers in new york. her campaign is now asking florida officials to extend voter registration deadlines because of hurricane matthew. this sunday clinton will debate donald trump for the second time in saint louis. vermont senator bernie sanders will be back in the granite state tomorrow. sanders will be campaigning for clinton at two different rallies. the first at keene state college at 2:00 p.m. and then nashua community college at 5:00.

manchester. we told you about the first hotel proposal in august, . tonight, the planning board saw the plans for another major hotel coming to the city's downtown area. jean mackin gives us a peek at the plans. jean the newest proposal puts a : 6-story hotel right here in the manchester millyard and the developers say this one will be geared toward millennials. the designs were unveiled before the manchester planning board the 63,000 square foot hilton tru bridge street bridge with retail and patio space available, along with a parking deck. it would be built on bedford street, right here, where there's now a parking lot with access from commercial street. developers say they tried to design a modern hotel while honoring the mill yard look. >> we wanted to respect the architecture of the millyard and

station wbpf is in west palm beach, florida tonight. terri: really high wind, about 55 miles from our, driving rain, horizontal. we are still feeling the effects of it. you the palm trees are lashing back and forth in e a few hardy souls walking around as hurricane matthew churns its way north. luckily not hitting an impact in this part of palm beach county as much as originally forecasted because matthew took that turned to the north and stayed a little off our coast.

the wind, the dust. it is all happening here, but luckily not as bad and we probably will not get as much damage in this part of palm beach county as originally anticipated. still, nothing to take lightly. we've seen a lot of transformers blow. then got to be thousands of people now -- last i heard was 48 thousand people in palm beach county without power. reporters in florida working so hard area new details tonight in the investigation of last week's deadly train crash in new jersey. sheltom: investigators say the n was going 21 miles per hour, . that's more than twice the speed

hit the emergency brake less than one second before the crash. one person was killed and more than 100 were hurt. the final investigation report could take more than one year to complete. shelley: claremont police are looking for two suspects and -- in two burglaries. surveillance shows someone breaking into the store and stealing cigarettes. later in the morning, police also responded to a burglary at the head start. authorities say these incidents could be related. anyone with information should call police. shelley: washington auto road stranded hundreds of visitors. check out this picture, state park officials say it happened just before 4 this evening in -- 4:00 this afternoon in the middle of 5-mile gravel section of the road. about 100 cars were stuck until about 5:30. now the road closes at 4:00 p.m. so thankfully no one was heading up the mountain.

matthew once again. that is the focus all along east coast. the center of circulation about 125 miles to the southeast of cape canaveral. notice the motion here. it is moving to the northwest, hugging the coastline probably after 2:00, 3:00 4:00 in the morning. it may never make landfall in florida. good in one regard and bad news in another. it will be -- they will be guilty with the edge of the center of the strongest wind -- they will be deadealing with the eyewall outr edge of the center of the strongest wind. approaching savannah, georgia by early tomorrow evening. a big trough in the atmosphere kicking off a cold front to the west helps steer the storm to east, away from the carolinas

after that. the jet stream will help steer this thing down to the south and then it wobbles in place, possibly back through the northern bahamas and even back through seven florida. the by then, notice the wind, down to 45 miles per hour. so if that does happen, not newly the effects we could see with a purple -- a possible hurricane. hurricane force winds are just off shore with a track just east of the coast. beaches, 74 miles an hour or stronger. gusts close to 100 early tomorrow morning into the early evening across the northern part of the is coast of florida. realtor to wind stayed just off shore with a track about 20 miles east of the coast. eventually, the wind will diminish. and still tropical storm conditions. but offshore later saturday into

today. more fair skies out there. it's fairly mild upstairs in the app -- the atmosphere. we call that a classic temperature inversion when it is actually warmer upstairs. overnight tonight, nice little warm-up, maybe upper 70's, couple of spots may come close to 80 degrees. but look at the big change off to the west. will help drive matthew well south of the mid-atlantic states in the northeast good instead of getting a hurricane, all we get is the actual cold front actually beginning to show up with a couple of clouds and widely scattered showers. they will move in here during saturday afternoon. after that, it is mainly dry for quite some time.
