we'll get to that in a moment. kevin joining us now with the latest on that. it is starting to bear down on florida; right? kevin: it looks that way. we're going to continue to see the eye of the storm just off of the shore at the present time. that sets up what should be a track of the system off of the coast of the carolinas which could mean heavy rain for them. around here we have clearer skies this morning. more fog playing out which will take a few hours to burn off. temperatures this afternoon about as warm as we'll be w for the rest of the calendar year. we're talking mid to upper 70's. up north, we're talking lower 70's later on today. big changes for the holiday weekend. all of the details on that with your forecast coming up in just a few minutes. erin: all right. thank you. hundreds of thousands of people are without power in florida as hurricane matthew lashes the sunshine states, major hurricane in florida, georgia, and south carolina are all under the federal state of emergency with

the national weather service issued a warning similar to the message before katrina. the death toll in haiti has climbed to 283. they expect that number to climb significantly because they are still trying to reach some of the hardest hit areas and the waters are just starting to recede now. abc's lauren lister is in florida this morning where some of the strongest effects are possible. >> hurne barreling toward florida. the brutal conditions intensifying as the eye of the storm taunting postal cities. over night violent winds along the beaches. gusts in some places clocking in above 70 miles per hour. the storm bringing the look and sound of fireworks in the form of downed powerlines. thousands facing outages. officials fearing up to

end up in the dark. matthew will be devastating. florida's governor making the entire warning. >> unfortunately this is going to kill people. reporter: already it has. matthew taking the lives of more than 100 people as it swept through haiti. the death toll skyrocketing as the flood waters recede. matthew bathering before heading to florida. residents thursday preparing, filling up the final sandbags, stores are boarded up, their selfs b people urged to evacuate here and in the carolinas. some are refusing to go. >> everything is left and boarded up. i'm just waiting. >> the many getting out clogging the highways for miles. nearly 4,000 flights have been canceled. a major concern here now the storm surge. along the coast of florida it is expected to be six to ten feet or more. residents fearing this water way could rise. you could see the dock

i'm abc news. erin: several local red cross volunteers are deployed to help communities repair for and recover from hurricane matthew. a woman from new hampshire is also in florida right now pursuing a license to work as a chef on private yachts. katherine krauss is riding out the storm. >> i don't have anywhere else to go right now. i'm staying at the -- i don't know a lot of people in the area. erin: krauss says her brother lives in west palm beach. things are worse there. she says that stores and gas stations ran out of supplies before the storm arrives. you can get the latest track on hurricane matthew on the web site at wmur.com and also watch live coverage from the sister stations in florida as the storm moves through. of course we'll have more throughout the morning. two large new hotels could be coming to downtown manchester. the first proposal was submitted in august and

last night. wmur's ray brewer is live in manchester with a look at plans. good morning, ray. ray: good evening. we're in the bed. this is the parking lot where they want to build a new hotel. the 63,000 square foot hotel could be aimed at millennials and high-tech guests, features a lobby and dead. now the planning board got to review the plans. last month we told you about the extended stay residents in that's been proposed for central street. developers describing that as upscale. now the company hopes to open that 145 room in 2018. the plans board could decide on approval and both projects as early as next month. ground breaking wouldn't be until 2018 at the

that year. erin: all right. thank you. a middleton woman accused of hitting a 12-year-old relative has been found not guilty. jurors deliberated for about an hour yesterday before acquitting 35-year-old erica hunt. the state alleges that hunt grabbed a metal bat while the kids were arguing. the defense argued that the boy hurt himself during their struggle. in northern massachusetts after an elderly man was killed during what police call a home invasion. a man in his 90's was killed and his wife who was in her 70's and confined to a wheelchair was seriously hurt. an autopsy is planned. no arrests have been made. they are following several leads this morning. a state trooper

in a construction zone along the everett turnpike and tried to get a car to stop. the driver accelerated up the ramp. 57-year-old john hunt was cited for negligent operation and disobeying a police officer. 100 drivers were stranded after the car everyone was headed down. fortunately no one was hurt. two people face drug charges after police found more than 20 pounds of marijuana hidden in the trunk of a car. state police stopped a car on 95 in portsmouth in week. the drugs were found after the canine alerted the trooper to the odor of the drugs. still ahead on "news 9 daybreak" friday morning, a leader on the field and off. a star field hockey

duck boat tour companies in philadelphia has suddenly shut down due to rising costs. he says the biggest problem is insurance premiums have gone up 330%. duck boat safety has come underfire. the company is still operating in boston as well as seattle and missouri. the drought is still causing big problems for a lot it is good news for local vineyards. growers say the dry weather cuts down on fungus and crop diseases. some vineyards are reporting smaller harvest. the quality of the grape is a lot better. local businesses and colleges are launching a new effort to build the granite state's economy. the goal is to have colleges and businesses work together to make sure students get the right training to be productive members of the work force.

temperatures in the 40's. visibility generally northern and western half of the state. there's the warmth here and the front and the big change that comes behind it. that's the progression for us. temperatures today will get up into the 70's. maybe as high as 77 or 78 in a few interior sections of the state. we'll have a sea breeze develop at the coastline again this afternoon. fair skies into this evening. 's the 50's. any sort of early sunshine or patchy fog tomorrow will give way to clouds. you notice most of the shower activity holds off until late in the day and into tomorrow evening. it will be a quick line of showers making its way through tomorrow night. clouds early sunday giving way to partial sunshine on asore northerly breeze. that sets up cooler air for the first half of next week. there's hurricane matthew, category three. eye of the storm itself

coast right now. the general motion of this is to the north, northwest. we will continue to see a turn to the north and then eventually a turn around and looping backward as a tropical storm by the time we get there. they are not going to likely by hit twice. the heaviest of the rain will be in the carolina. the strongest of the options. most of the tracks keep it suppressed to south. patchy fog early. dropping into the 40's to lower 50's later on tonight. sparse the extended forecast, clearing skies and cooler on sunday. we're looking at cool sunshine continues thereafter. i want you to notice the overnight lows, not only monday morning but certainly tuesday morning. there are a lot of south eastern areas that haven't had the first frost of the season. i think that's in play for tuesday morning before we start warming

>> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now wmur "news 9 daybreak." erin: good morning to you on friday, october 7th. we're headed into the long holiday weekend for many folks. it looks like our weather here is going to be just beautiful, of course, elsewhere around the country a bit of a different story. we want to get to the top stories right now. all eyes are on florida this morning as hurricane matthew approaches the state. president obama has declared emergencies for also south carolina. officials in manchester are considering plans for a pair of new hotels in the queen city. one of them is geared toward millennials. and they are trying to figure out what destroyed a home in a fire. for us, it is looking nice. kevin: we continue to watch matthew to the south. the center of

95.7 wzid. erin: all right. thank you. people in florida are hunkering down this morning as hurricane matthew bears down on the state. right now matthew is a category 3 storm. powerful winds have knocked out power to more than 200,000 homes and businesses. disney world decided to shut down today due to the hurricane. this is the first time in 11 years the amusement park has closed. matthew is the most powerful storm to coast in more than a decade. president obama has declared emergencies for florida, georgia, and south carolina. the hurricane has caused more than 280 deaths in haiti. the death toll is expected to rise there. meantime the red cross of new hampshire and vermont is deploying workers to the south. one woman is riding out the storm in fort lauderdale, florida. katherine krauss from

a man from maine reported it was used in merrimack without his approval. surveillance video shows another man using the card. he may be part of the larger group. >> what we know they are doing now is they are buying compact items that are valuable, returning the items, getting cashback, or a gift card. erin: the criminals obtain the credit card information and make a counterfeit card to use. claremont police are suspects in a pair of burglaries that are connected. the first one happened wednesday morning at the t-bird mini mart. officers say someone broke in and stole cigarettes. later that same morning, police responded to a burglary at the head start. if you are looking for something fun to do this weekend, there are a lot of events taking place. the town of warner kicks off the fall foilage festival.

could be a couple of degrees warmer than we were yesterday. of course, cooler air wins out over the course of the holiday weekend. we'll tell you the system that eventually arrives coming up. erin: we continue to follow the track of hurricane matthew. right now the category 3 storm is moving in on florida. tens of thousands of people have lost power. this is the strongest storm to threaten the atlantic coast in more than a decade. shawn from the sister station is happening there. >> reporter: this morning the national weather service saying hurricane matthew is 50 miles off shore of where we are in melbourne, florida. the winds are starting to pick up. now we're seeing some peak wind gusts after 90 to 100 miles per hour as those outer eye walls start to come in through the area. you can see the wind is blowing the tree limbs. the rain is going horizontally as well. at 3:00 a.m., the

force wind gust 74 mile per hour in barefoot bay, florida. that's the strongest national weather service has seen yet. power outages in the tens of thousands. we're seeing lights on now. there have been flickering throughout the morning. transformers have also been blowing the lights in rooms that we are in right now. they are continuing to flicker through the morning. also we're seeing a really big change in the ra big, thick drops of rain in sheets. you get soaked the moment you step outside. the national weather service has flood warnings in many parts of the central florida through 5:45 today. two or three inches of rain from come down. they are expecting another two or three inches to come down in the coming hours. the big question is what this is going to look like when daylight breaks. in melbourne, florida, i'm sharon. erin: the cost of the storm are

a slide show of the most expensive hurricanes to date. the costliest storm was hurricane katrina. $49 billion was paid out. the second most expensive hurricane was andrew in 1992, hurricane sandy, which was 2012, was the third costliest hurricane. a man is facing criminal charges after he followed a school bus while d on its facebook page. he is the parent of one of the kids on the bus. they say he will be charged with disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace. two major retail stores are pulling a controversial hall low wean costume. many people say it is offensive to the transgender community. both walmart and amazon has decided to stop selling it.

success. a school teacher in missouri is gaining national attention for what's become known as the positivity project. the teacher only needed a camera and some kind worlds to make students feel really special. >> i'm doing a positive oak park project. >> it all started. >> i wanted to let you know you inspire me to be a better teacher and make me want to come to school every day. reporter: she recruited more teachers to pick a other people. >> we are, you. yes, you. >> i feel special. >> you should. you are special. reporter: there was a common theme. >> every single kid thought they were trouble. >> well, except chad. >> i didn't say i was in trouble. what did he get me on. >> it was nice to be told i was valued for the things that are just my characteristics. the things that i am anyway. >> it was just really powerful to watch the kids their eyes, the smile on their faces.

fairly mild day tomorrow with temperatures in the 60's. we'll run the risk of a shower. from there, we should see it give way to sunshine and lead us to the warm day. this is the front that starts to move its way in here with an increase in clouds with a few showers late tomorrow and into tomorrow night. 50 degrees. there are a couple of spots like the marlborough of the world that are in the lower-lying valleys that see the thick fog. they have temperatures cooler down only not only into the upper 40's but 30's. all in all, 40's. visibility down to less than a half a mile. that should burn off by 9:00 this morning. it set up temperatures in the 70's.
