emergency. abc's marci gonzalez is in new smurna beach with the latest on the storm. marci: good afternoon. we are feeling the effects of hurricane matthew. the choppy water you see behind me is not the ocean, it is the indian river. you can see how it is already flooding over the street. the wind has been intense through the night and into the morning, strong enoughbr and it is not letting up just yet. hurricane matthew's eye brushing and battering florida's east coast. wind gusts surpassing 100 miles an hour, bringing down trees and power lines, leaving hundreds of thousands of people in the dark. but the major concern, flooding, starting in central florida already. with forecasters saying the

president obama: i just want to emphasize to everybody that this is still a really dangerous hurricane. marci: already at least one hurricane-related death reported in port saint lucie, florida. and the death toll climbing in haiti. nearly 300 killed, entire communities leveled. matthew now moving north towards jacksonville. governor scott: there's potential for significant flooding there. marci: as officials urge evacuations in parts of georgia and the carolinas -- we needed to be safe and get out carolinas -- we needed to be safe and get out for the destructive effects of matthew next. >> that's a lot of water, a lot of dangerous water. >> i am begging you at this point to understand the seriousness of this storm. marci: and we are seeing just how serious this storm is, though the extent of the impact still really isn't clear because of all of this win and flooding, still too dangerous for anyone to come out to assess the

erin: for the very latest path of this powerful storm, let's we want to send it over to kevin skarupa in the storm watch 9 weather center. kevin: the eye of the storm in the strongest of the winds have stayed offshore but it has kept up the intensity instead of weakening it. it is continuing to move at a fairly stable rate northwest, at 12 miles an hour. the hurricane center has been steadfast in the forecast with this being near the shoreline of florida and continuing to parallel for quite a while and eventually paralleling the georgia shoreline. what this is going to go as it gradually weakens eventually is spread quite a bit of rainfall and while there will be strong winds and storm surge at the coast line, we could be looking at a foot of rain fall and

it weakens going back over a similar area it past five before. you can see on most all the tracks keep it suppressed to our south. here skies for a good part of the holiday weekend. we will have all the details coming of it -- coming up. erin: many are predicting that matthew could become one of the most expensive storms in u.s. history. already on the list, hurricane katrina in 2005. it's the costliest hurricane so far, with $153 billion worthf the second most expensive hurricane was andrew back in 1992. hurricane sandy, which hit in 2012, was the third costliest. for the latest track on matthew, you can head to our website at wmur.com. you can also watch live coverage from our sister stations in florida as the storm continues to pound parts of that state. here at home, the man charged after leading police on a

recorded on the officer's dashca m. wmur's ray brewer is live at salem circuit court. ray: justin soeum was accompanied to court by his mother with of the car that according to police he stole. the prosecution telling the court that there may be charges from a domestic incident in a nashua prior to the height-speed -- high-speed chase. with the public side, the 22-year-old was charged with misdemeanors and violations stemming from the high-speed chase early wednesday morning. a pelham police officer captured the incident on the cruiser's d ashcam. the charges included driving while intoxicated. the defense told the court that this is the reason he has gotten into trouble. the prosecution noted that for someone who is only 22, he has a long criminal history and is a

necessary. >> he has demonstrated he has wanton and willful disregard for public safety and the way he engaged the officer could he fled the scene at speeds over 80 miles an hour. >> these charges and his prior history is all a result of his alcohol use. he recognizes that he does have a problem with alcohol. ray: the judge set bail to the jail. his trial is set for october 28. reporting live in salem, ray brewer, wmur news 9. erin: an investigation is underway into what sparked a fire at a home in new durham. the 3-alarm fire started around 7:15 last night at a log home on berry road. no injuries were reported. donald trump and hillary clinton are steering clear of the battleground state of

session with republican candidate for congress jim lawrence. you ask the questions as he makes his bid for the second district in new hampshire. that is at the wmur facebook page at 1:00 today. nearly 75 years later, officials have identified the remains of a u.s. serviceman as a man from keene. edwin hopkins was 19 years old when he was assigned to the uss oklahoma in pearl harbor. hopkins was one of 429 people killed when the japanese attacked on december 7, 1941. over the past year, scientists used dna records to identify hopkins. he will be buried next saturday in keene with full military honors. turning now to sports, big papi and the sox take on the cleveland indians in game two of the alds today. cleveland leads the series 1-0. first pitch is at 4:38 in

a search is underway in northern massachusetts after an elderly man was killed during what police are calling a home invasion. a man in his 90's was killed and his wife, who is in her 70's and confined to a wheelchair, was seriously hurt in the town of orange. an autopsy is planned and while no arrests have been made, investigators say they are following several leads. a bay state man is facing criminal charges after police say he followed a school bus while dressed as a clown. department posted this picture on its facebook page. officers say he is the parent of one of the kids on the bus. they say he will be charged with disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace. dozens of people across the northeast say they spotted a meteor streaking across the sky last night. it happened around 9:45. this image was captured over akers pond in errol. people also reported seeing it in massachusetts, maine, canada, vermont, and rhode island.

almost a perfect warm mid autumn day. we are not expecting much in the way of cloudiness until more fog forms it won't be quite as cool later tonight. not a lot of upper 30's out there as the next front slowly approaches. increasing clouds tomorrow afternoon. eventually the chance of a couple of showers. very northern extent of some the shower activity from hurricane front slowly edges towards us the moisture will get caught up in this front. we are looking at tropical downpours out of this. if anything, a quarter of an inch of rain in some spots later tomorrow evening. temperatures in the 60's to near 70's. temperatures are running 1, 3, even four degrees warmer than we were yesterday at lunchtime.

60's tomorrow with increasing clouds, that is the change in him will be around on sunday. for the time being we will have a fairly nice and quiet evening commute. if you're traveling to your holiday weekend destination, just have the sunglasses with you. patchy fog starting tomorrow with a little bit of sunshine. as we go through the afternoon to clouds increasing and thickening. late in the day we cannot rule out the shower but most of them will be saturday evening as the moisture lifts north it may slow down the front a little bit. extra clouds still around sunday morning. those may be a bit stubborn sunday. that is the trick is part of the forecast. not necessarily the timing of the rainbow when the clouds are released. milder sunday night, but i suspect the time we get into complete clearing skies, which should be tuesday morning, we could be looking at the coldest
